    I just want to say THANK YOU! Your such an awesome teacher. I love love love how you dumb-it down so regular people who don’t have the experience yet can understand thoroughly. It’s like as if your in my brain answering every question as soon as I think of it. It’s amazing!! I wish you were local so I can pay you rather than going to college or trade school!! I've used Photoshop for years and I just discovered your tutorials yesterday. I am learning a lot! Little things like the way you use filters and in this one, the creation and use of the depth map. So helpful! Thank you so much!

    Really nice tutorial, Jesús. I didn't know that the lens blur filter was that sophisticated, at least for non-smart objects. Your method could save some time in some important cases. However, this overall method cannot compensate completely for some basic physics: A lens with a shallow depth of field is large in diameter, so part of that big lens is "looking" behind a sharp object. One way to think of this is that a blur filter generates each blurred pixel by combining nearby pixels, but cannot include pixels from a sharp object. So, pixels right next to, say, a person's sharp face cannot be properly blurred. Generally this would produce the bright artifacts you see with the smart-object cases.
    There is one general way to fix this, even for harder cases like simulating motion blur. You generate two copies of the base image. On one, select out everything but the sharp objects. On the other, replace the same sharp objects by cloning or content-aware fill, or whatever your favorite method is. You don't have to do that good of a job, except just inside the areas where the sharp objects were. Then, blur this "background-only" layer and put the "people" layer on top of it. You can extend this to cases where there are foreground objects that must be blurred also, but you need three layers.
    I would suggest that people use Jesús' method when it works, unless you're really good at removing trashcans and old boyfriends from images. If you can't make it work, perhaps because of in-focus hair obscuring out-of-focus background or something tricky, then try the more general method.

    Before finalizing your image if you decided you needed to apply subtle sharpening to the forward subject would you do that after the lens blur filter? Then maybe use a brush & mask to apply selective sharpening?

    One of the best explainations ever..
    Also, when you use the lens blur, how do you deal with things which even though are behind the subject, but at the same depth? (For example, the red phone booth type thing in the pic, is getting blurred gradually, although it shouldn't). Thanks in advance

    Holy macaroni dude... The second method is nuts... This is gonna help so much... Thank you so much. I used to follow this bullshit method of first blurring the whole background with lens blur and then erasing em with either gradient mask or a hige soft brush... I'm forget all of that....

    Hello Jesus. Thank you for all these tutorials. They have been a great help. However in the second video here, building the depth map, I encountered a problem. I got as far as applying the black to white gradient overlay/modified to reflected and my screen looked identical to yours. However I was unable to move it up or down no matter what I tried. Any idea what I may be doing incorrectly. Thank you so much.

    Nice tutorial, and may indeed use the second technique some day. Just a thought though. For the second technique when changing the blur for the person in the background. Wouldn't it be potential more realistic to use a gradient filter applied only to the subjects going from 0 to 17 adjusted to blur accordingly. To kinda mimic the blur changing gradually over a given distance in the image much like it's done with the rest of the image.

    As usual you do an excellent job with your videos. I really like your style, you don't try to be funny all the time like some instructors. You don't add a lot of extra off subject comments like for example you mentioned it wasn't a video on selecting but you provide a link if that is what is needed. Great job.

  • @jjaylad
    @jjaylad 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks Jesus! This is an awesome educational tool to help one understand color values, channels and the science of blurring backgrounds. I did it for years shooting sports with a bridge cam, which had no DOF in comparison to the good DSLR equipment I have now. In earlier versions of PS this was challenging.
    What really fries me is that my LG G7 THINQ phone now has dial in DOF which generates even more realistic DOF than these Photoshop techniques produce. In your first example the depth map doesn't consider the top portion of the tree just behind the subject whereas when I shoot something like that with the G7 ...the camera does that just fine ...even for an extended arm or a long branch of a tree jutting into the foreground. The phone is creating the depth map on the fly and allowing the shooter to dial in whatever level of blur is desired!
    I got so tired of all the work I now carry a 50 1.4 and an 85 1.8 in addition to my 2.8 zooms. But of course what is happening is if I'm just casually taking photos ...I leave that 20 pounds of gear at home because the phone with its 'selectable' DOF ...on demand, is such a treat! Meanwhile for portraits the skin tones and fine detail are as good as what I get from my Sigma 17-50 2.8. or Nikon 50mm 1.4 etc, which for my D7200 ...are all I'd 'walk around' with. I backpack a fair amount and the phone covers most everything including macro down to a cm ...so again ...a real treat leaving the DSLR bag at home.
    Bottom line to me, is that it is time for Adobe to pony up with a filter or add-on that will do what the phones do now ...automatically. To have to spend 30 minutes or more to get a photo from 3 or 4 thousand dollars worth of DLSR and lens to look as good as one from a phone ...is ridiculous. Sure ...we can't do BIF or high speed sports with phones (yet) but for most portraits for social media etc. and even up to 8x10, many of the new phones are fine, and their 16mp images often need less LR editing than those from our cameras set to neutral tone and sharpening. If Sony, Nikon, Canon etc. could adopt that dial in DOF technology that would be even better but then we'd all need to invest in new cameras ...whereas with phones, we're updating to the latest technology every 2 years. So to me ...we need Adobe to the rescue here.! Too bad one can't attach photos here or I'd include a normal and adjusted shot as examples.

    7:00 the ghosting effect is because the tilt-shift is applied to the whole layer, and then masked. The whole image of course includes the couple. So the couple are also blurred. When you tilt-shift with a selection, on a non-smart object you do not provide any information about the couple to the tilt-shift effect. Really glad you showed both ways as I actually was not waste of this. Great video!

    What an amazing tutorial! I came here via the older video on the same subject from 3 or 4 years ago which flummoxed me a bit but things have obviously come on a bit since in Photoshop. The way it's explained here is so clear. Even using the first method described here I improved a photo that I took at a cricket match by blurring the background so that the crowd behind the batsman were more out of focus and it looks like I've used a £1000 lens instead of the £150 that I have. Thanks!
