- Learn How to Blur the Background in Adobe Photoshop 2023 | Easy Step-by-Step Tutorial
Welcome to this comprehensive tutorial where I will guide you through the process of blurring the background in your photos using Adobe Photoshop 2023. This technique is not limited to the latest version; it also works seamlessly with any Photoshop version that has the Select Subject feature. To determine if your version has this, just navigate to the Select menu and look for the Subject option.
Achieving a beautifully blurred background in your photos is easier than you might think. By following these simple steps, you can add a professional touch to your images to focus attention on the main subject:
STEP 1: Separate the main subject
Isolating the main subject from the rest of the image on a new layer. This can be accomplished using the Select Subject feature to generate a Layer Mask. This ensures that only the subject remains visible while the background becomes transparent.
STEP 2: Create a new background layer
Next, create a separate layer for the new background. For this we use the Content-Aware Fill feature to remove the main subject automatically.
STEP 3: Apply the Gaussian Blur filter
Having removed the subject, we can now blur the background layer. For this, we use the Gaussian Blur filter, which allows you to control the intensity of the blur.
While this process may seem straightforward, I will also share some valuable tips and tricks to optimize your results. By implementing these techniques, you can further enhance the visual impact of your blurred backgrounds. You can also read the details in my article: lenscraft.co.uk/photo-editing...
So, whether you are a beginner or an experienced Adobe Photoshop user, this step-by-step tutorial will give you the skills to easily blur photo backgrounds.

Thank you for a detailed step by step explanation. You don't assume the viewer knows a lot about Photoshop. I love your informative video.

Out of all the tutorials on youtube that had me frying my eyes for hours, yours did it for me. Thank you🙌🏽
It's wonderful to hear that I've saved your eyes. Hopefully you didn'g get too frustrated before you found what you needed. Thank you.
Thank You! Very well explained and easy to follow.
You are welcome. Glad you found it helpful.
Thank you. In my Adobe Photoshop Elements 2023 I don't have part of options in the Edit menu (Content-aware fill) but still managed to do the blur (without gaussian correction)
When I did this video I never really considered Elements so it's great to hear that you've worked out how to do it. Thanks for letting me know.
Very detailed explanation, thank you 😊

Thanks. It's on the list but isn't easy to do. I don't want to publish something that's difficult to follow.
thx, it worked :)
Glad it helped.
Very helpful, thanks!😇

You're welcome!
Great one mate
Thank you! Cheers!
Great tutorial
Glad you think so. Thank you.
eccellente...
Thank you
Stuck with "Content-Aware Fill" option grayed out in Adobe Photoshop CC... any ideas?
Solved! :) the layer was a smart object so had to rasterize it to turn it back to normal layer and after that the issue was solved and could continue with your great tutorial! Thank you! keep it up!
How were you able to do that.
I also got stuck with “Content-aware Fill” option
I couldn't get this method to work after adding so many layers to do my retouching. I'm guessing this step has to be done first, then retouch after.
Do it first. If you want to do it later create a Stamp Layer that created all the other layers.
thank crazy :v
You're welcome
nice. but i think its geared towards advance people. need some explanation as to why you have to remove the man from duplicate layer and why the duplicate layer is in the middle stack. Glyn Dewis has more of an elementary explanation that makes slow learner or noob like people really gets it. but its good. i can follow it Verbatim but really not knowing the rationale behind blurring the background. cheers.
Did you read the tutorial that I linked to in the video description? You might find that helpful and explains more.
@@RobinWhalley thanks Robin. will do.
Pretty cool but I wouldn't say "easy". So many steps to remember. I would prefer a simpler way to get some background blur. Usually I'm looking to add just a little more to say mimic a faster lens.
Thanks. It may help if you check my written article as it breaks it down into tte hree stpes: lenscraft.co.uk/photo-editing-tutorials/blur-background-photoshop/
One you've done this a few times it can be accomplished really quickly. And you can create actions for some of the steps, too. I do this a lot and the whole process typically takes less than a minute.
@@quirkworks4076 Fantastic. I'm pleased that it's working well for you.
Why I have no Blur option in my Filter list?
I'm sorry, I have no idea. If you're using Photoshop you should have both a Blur and Blur Gallery in the Filters menu.
I followed it all until it got the adding the Gaussian layer...however often I replayed it, I just couldn't get it to work. Not helped that my 2024 version doesn't look exactly the same....😐😐
Have you found your way around it
@@yinusaabayomi6541 I did find another video that explained it very well- thank you.
too fast !!!!🙃
Sorry, but I do get people saying that I'm too slow and they need to watch the playback speeded up. Perhaps try slowing it down in the TH-cam player.
You can control speed on TH-cam window
I hate photoshop my head in getting fkked
