    Dave, I wanted to thank you so much for being clear, especially for someone like me ,who started learning Photoshop when older, now at 61 I am still learning! Depth map is something I wanted to learn for my nature photographs, (usually taken with a 100-400 lens) but it's important for me to separate subject from background specially when it's small as a bird...The way you explain, is great. I saw 2 other people teaching, and it was sooo complicated that my brains gave overlow! LOL . Thank you again, best wishes from Uruguay.

    Excellent tutorial thanks Dave. What about the fringing around the main elephant’s left leg? Is it possible to blur the outline slightly to hide it?

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I didn’t notice it I will have to go back and look. I am sure it could be fixed easily with a bit of a clone stamp or a blur tool.

      I feathered the main selection by 3 ox, then shifted the edge slightly and eliminated the fringe. Thanks again for the inspiration Dave

    Very good Dave. I haven't seen this technique before. I looks very realistic. But I have a question: how did the lens blur filter pick up on the depth map that you created? I know you clicked on depth map in the filter but the depth map channel wasn't active nor highlighted.

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Keith. The Lens blur filter looks at all the channels and let’s you pick the Channel you want. When I selected Depth Map in the Lens Blur Filter it applied the depth map I created from the depth map channel.

    I used to do it this way. But find the Depth Blur neural filter saves time and works my many shots where you have objects at different depths. Sometime I do the blur in the filter. But often I just use it to output a depth map so I can refine the depth map if needed.

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find the neural filter is hit or miss and usually if it misses the depth map is also wrong and needs to be repaired. I show in this video how to deal with subjects at different depths.

      @@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly That is why I do a depth map. Some it is very good some need editing and I also like to feather the edges after edit it. It is often good on multiple subjects. I have some test photos every time they update it.

    Nice fallback if needed, but honestly, I'd be kicking myself for not doing it in-camera the entire time I was making the effect in post. 😅

      I'm an artist who paints pet portraits, and more often than not the reference images I get from clients are horrendous, and yet I have to somehow pull a masterpiece out of it?!? Lol! Tricks and tools like this in Photoshop are invaluable to me, helping me come up with a much more pleasing composition to work with!!! 😁

    • @ThatGuyInVegas
      @ThatGuyInVegas ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sandiegriffiths1469 Very good reason for using Photoshop!

    • @sandiegriffiths1469

      @@ThatGuyInVegasThanks ☺️ I'm still new to it but am enjoying the learning curve, and it's bringing so much value to my work! I actually have a new camera and lens coming today... Once I've got to grips with taking decent images, I'm hoping clients will let me give their pets a bit of a photo shoot so exactly as you say, I can do stuff like this in camera!!! 🤞
