    A brilliant explanation of the how's and why's of VD, especially useful for us new Q3 owners who want to make the most of PCVR. Huge thanks.

    Huge thanks go out to someone who made me aware of a few things in relation to 160MHz bandwidths with Wi-Fi 6 5GHz bands - Thank you! Someone has also pointed out that lower frame rates also have less compression, as more of the bitrate can go into each frame, I totally forgot to mention that! These are great tips, keep them coming! I hope the video is of some help, PCVR is too good to be impacted by non fine tuned settings 👍

    • @jc74435
      @jc74435 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Didnt think about the framerate impact on the compression, that is a good point. But now that I'm thinking about it, AV1 should also have less compression than AV1 10bit (less colour information to encode). Or am I thinking wrong?

    Honestly, this has been the best, straight-to-the-point, no BS explanation of Virtual Desktop I've seen. My PC will be spoilt by my Quest 3 when it arrives, tomorrow. Thank you 👍
    I might try AV1, but I'm told my 7900XTX isn't as efficient at encoding as it's nVidia counterpart, so a little experimentation will be required. (I never went above 35ms latency with my Pico 4, and I don't intend to start now).

    I'm a sr. network engineer that specializes in wireless and I have a note on your WiFi segment. Moreso than just being on 5Ghz, the wireless protocol like 802.11ac(WiFi 5) or 802.11ax(WiFi 6) matters a lot. I have a WiFi 6E mesh wireless system that allows the Quest 3 to link at 2400Mbps. I'd highly recommend a WiFi 6 or 6E router for the Quest 3. Your stream will of course not use 2400Mbps of bandwidth, but the quality of the wireless connection will be higher at the end of the day. There are technologies in 802.11ax that improve everything.

      @@stachowi Well first we’d need to confirm where your bottleneck is. If you have a Wifi 6e and Virtual Desktop, and you’re getting choppy performance, then I think the bottleneck is with your PC. While playing a game thats stuttering i’d take off the headset and watch your PC monitor while moving the headset with your hands, and see if its choppy on your monitor. Once you identify the source of the problem we can go from there. My bottleneck was too much 5hz traffic where I live.

    I do have one tip. Customize your FOV setting in SteamVR. Try lowering it until you can actually notice a difference. I got to 90% before being able to see any difference.
    Just make sure you are adjusting the glasses spacer beforehand because maybe you aren't noticing the full FOV possible because the spacer is on a higher setting than needed.

    • @DayDreamerVR
      @DayDreamerVR  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Glad it was useful 👍 ODT only affects Oculus Link. The settings in Virtual Desktop change the settings in Steam VR, so if you change the graphical quality setting that will change the 100% resolution in steam vr. So if you then put 150% resolution in steam vr, you are doing 150% of the graphical setting/resolution set in virtual desktop. The other steam vr settings and virtual Desktop's are mostly separate. Hope that helps for the moment, and if I do a video at some point covering this area I'll cover this too 👍

    Great guide. A few questions: (1) what should Steam render resolution be for Q3 using Virtual Desktop? The recommendation used to be 100% but I have heard it should be higher for Q3. (2) does using my router’s 10Gb port make any difference to VD over a 1Gb port? (3) Does the Q3 image quality benefit from any settings in the Nvidia control panel? One of the VR tweaking difficulties is that there are settings in various places (control panel, streamer app., VD, Steam) and no good guide to get the best wireless streaming visual quality with a solid frame rate taking all settings into consideration.

      Keep render resolution it steam at 100% and change the vr graphical quality setting in VD as that does the same thing, if you do both then it doubles the effect of increasing the resolution. A 10GB port won't make any difference with the bitrate being used. I keep all other settings in Nvidia control panel etc as default, and just adjust VD 👍

      The graphics quality setting in virtual desktop sets the encode resolution. You need that as high as possible with steam vr at 100% for the best image. It is better to have ultra/Godlike in Virtual Desktop, and 100% in steam vr rather than high in virtual desktop and 150% in steam vr. Supersampling in steam vr (higher than 100%) when you have ultra/Godlike in Virtual Desktop will add almost no visible difference/minimal improvement but at a high performance cost. So stick to Ultra 👍 Hope that helps

    • @DayDreamerVR
      @DayDreamerVR  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Sorry to hear that. If you have a low powered system, and you want to reach a frame rate that you can't, then turn it on, but you will experience additional latency, ghosting and blurriness. Those issues go away, except for the latency if you have ssw on when set at 120fps. If you are playing a game which has very demanding scenes, and then easy ones, and you don't want ssw on all the time, then automatic will allow it to turn on in those demanding scenes and turn it off when the game is easier to run. If you have it on automatic though, you may experience stutters each time it turns on and off. It is difficult to recommend what to do, as everyone has different priorities. I personally would not use automatic, and would keep ssw always on with 120fps. With some devices though like the PICO 4 you don't have 120fps option, so I would keep it off for those devices. I luckily do have a 4090 though, but if I had a more entry level graphics card, then I would probably consider having ssw always on at lower frame rates. I hope this helps 👍

    What I am not clear on is:
    1) What is the difference between Virtual Desktop Streamer and Virtual Desktop Wireless version. What is the purpose of Virtual Desktop Streamer which seems to be free?

    • @DayDreamerVR

      You have to pay for the Virtual Desktop app on the headset, and it uses the Virtual Desktop software on the PC to work. Don't get Virtual Desktop on steam. You can get a usb c to ethernet adapter and connect the headset to your router with an ethernet cable, but with the PICO headsets this has been a bit unreliable, I haven't tried it with the Quest 3. You can use a usb c cable with Oculus Link with the Oculus PC software for a wired experience, and I actually think you can get a better image than with Virtual Desktop, especially with racing sims if you increase the bitrate to 960Mbps in the Oculus Debug tool (you have to copy and paste in 960 for that to work). Hopefully this will make more sense when you start to explore the headset 👍

    Hm, I have this weird thing where it seems opposite of what most people are experiencing, I have a quest 3 and wifi 6E, generally at about 2400Mbps, and ingame fps is in most games roundabout 90fps.. If I use virtual desktop to run something with steamvr, it will run very smoothly but the controllers don't show up.. If I on the other hand run them using oculus directly then everything works except the lag is absolutely horrendous, looking like maybe 10fps, even though according to the vds statistics I'm having below 50ms latency and over 90fps.. If on the other hand I use openvr yet I use opencomposite then most games just either instantly crash or sometimes extremely distort the image, as if I'm looking at a funhouse mirror. However, here's the weirdest part, if I use a steamvr game that is listed in steam, the controllers show up, however if I launch a game that uses steamvr but wasn't installed via steam, the controllers don't show up. Previously I had a Rift, and this was never an issue, the controllers always worked regardless

    Where im confused is > Why a resolution setting if the per eye is set in steam vr? Doesn't that cause a conflict?

    • @DayDreamerVR
      @DayDreamerVR  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When you change the resolution in Virtual Desktop, you will find that is the new 100% point in Steam. So it changes the steam per eye resolutions. If you were to put a higher super sampling, say 200% in steam, then it would double the resolution in Virtual Desktop. Changes in steam won't change the encode resolution, so super sampling that way has very minimal, if any, gain. So I would recommend keeping steam to 100%, and just change the resolution in virtual desktop. Hope that helps 👍

    Can’t get past 110 bit rate on AV1 10 bit Quest 3. (Even if you move the slider way more past 110 bit rate, the number doesn’t change) Have it in god mode 120FPS running on 4090 WiFi 6. Anyone knows why?

    • @DayDreamerVR
      @DayDreamerVR  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      On the computers tab, what GHz band does it show you as connected to, and what connection speed does it show? The reason why it won't go any further when you move the slider up is because your connection is too week/slow. So make sure you're on a 5GHz band, and that you are closer enough to your router. Also is your pc connected to your router with an ethernet cable? If not then that also could be why.

Or do i need to make changes in my router settings? I have a very top end PC with a RTX 4090. Do I need a wifi 6e router to get higher bandwidth than I'm getting with my wifi 6 router? In your routers settings check what bandwidth it is set on (options are usually 20, 40, 80, 160). If you do have 160, then try that 👍 The PICO 4 doesn't support Wi-Fi 6e, so still with Wi-Fi 6 for the moment. If you don't have a 160MHz bandwidth on your router then don't worry, you won't notice any real difference between up to 1200 or upto 2400, and the bitrate is at maximum 400Mbps in Virtual Desktop, hope that helps 👍

    I recently tested a less expensive 6E router (TP-Link AXE5400 - $180) against a way more expensive 6E router (ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AXE16000 - $550) and there was a big difference in connection speed and consistency. The TP-Link maxed at 1200 and fluctuated a lot while the Asus held a constant 2401. My setup has the router within 6 feet of my headset in the same room. What's the minimum router requirements for playing on godlike in VD ?
    Right now I'm having a Huawei WS7100 Dual band, but everytime I look down In Golf+ on the green for putting, I get a slowmotion lack effect, like the connection starts to be unstable. (Only when I'm looking down on the green)
    I can't use h264 or h264+ either, this setting makes the whole display lacking around every time a move my head and that's constantly.
    My PC should easily handle the high settings and I use 1000/1000 mbit cat6e cables.
    My router is like 2 meters from my play area and everything seems to be ok with my specs.
    No matter what codec I use, the green in Golf+ lack's.
    But when using Ultra mode instead, all the issues disappear.
    Problem is that I don't like playing in other modes that godlike, everything is so blurry and I feel like playing on a Oculus CV1.

    • @DayDreamerVR
      @DayDreamerVR  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What PC specs do you have? Have you checked the virtual desktop performance monitor of fpsvr? That should indicate whether it is a network issue or PC issue. By going down to ultra and it working, suggests your PC isn't quite managing the resolution and fps. I would recommend that if you want to use Godlike, then you need to turn other settings down if it is your pc struggling, so set the fps at 60 or 72, or set it at 90 or 120 with synchronous spacewarp on. If you already have it set to this then you might need to reduce other game settings, and make sure you are set to a resolution (if using steam vr) of 1.0 so it isn't supersampling above the Godlike resolution. It could be worth asking on the Virtual desktop discord channel about that router, and virtual desktop do recommend some themselves. Hope this helps 👍
