My main concern with the Quest 3 is being able to fully push the display. You have to run a Quest 2 at 5400x2700 to get 1:1 pixel for pixel and the Quest 3 pushes that up to like 7000x3700 which is a pretty tall order even for a 4090, which I do not have unfortunately lol.

Yes a huge upgrade from the Quest 2! If you are a Quest Pro owner...for PCVR don't bother. The Pro and 3 look about identical even though the 3 has about 1 million more pixels it's not enough to make a noticeable difference if anyone is curious.
I came here wondering about the latency difference between wireless and linked, and you gave me exactly the info I needed, thanks! I am going to do some test of my own using the router which my ISP gave me. It has wifi 6, but it isn't a dedicated router like you have. I hope to get similar results regarding latency, which is my biggest concern.
@@SteveKnows Hey thanks for the recognition, it's a good feeling ☺️ I've been watching your stuff for quite a while now and love the content buddy, keep it up!
I honestly can't find the sweetspot on the quest 3, by which i mean it's all sweetspot I keep moving it between the smallest ipd to the widest and i don't see a difference in clarity. Not sure what that means about my eyesight really but it was annoying finding the sweetspot with the quest 2 but it's hard to not find it on the 3
Has anyone done a comparison with mere mortal hardware? Like a 2080 to 3080TI system? I'm pretty sure having a RTX-4090 makes the biggest difference lol. I mean if your PC can only push like 1600x1600 pixels, the higher resolution isn't helping you nearly as much as it could be, kinda like replacing your 27in 720p monitor with a 32in 1080p while still running it at the same old 720p resolution. The pancake lenses alone might be making a bigger difference as far as visuals, or they could let you see more perceived SDE due to better clarity? Anyway, I'm still hoping that the WiFi 6E's extra bandwidth can be leveraged through future updates, for better latency.
Any chance we could get a video of your pc set up for playing with the quest(2 or 3) on the pc? Would be really helpful! Unless there is a video I missed!? I have a 3070 and have to go into alot of setting and change stuff just to get it to play certain games
Sheesh thanks & ive used quest 3 ive never had any problems with link cable , but on Quest 2 ive had SO MANY LAG SPIKES & the wire coming out. So Quest 3 is so good
compared to what, the quest 2? i hearing different storys about the image quality, especially, that theres still screendoor effect due to the tilted displays and aliasing
@@dharkbizkit I was referring to what @SteveKnows said in his video when he said that inside the headset being night and day difference with its visuals. It can be confusing as there will be people that actually have tried it and those that haven't but are just saying things in this world. And on top of that, people physically see things differently. In a group that I hang out with in VR, people that got the Quest 3 from Quest 2 are very happy with it.
thing is, i dont have much experience in vr. none of my friends have any hardware of that sort and living coutryside means, no big place with good vr to tryout around here. the only thing i ever used and tried, was ps5vr2, so thats the only reference i have. and even there, i was able to spot screendoor effects on bright objects (although the owner insited that its impossible and what iam seeing is refraction from the fresnel lenses.. idk), but that level of the effect, is no dealbraker for me.. its more of the reference point in terms of "this should be the minimum iam looking for" so i cant say how the quest 3 compares to the ps5vr2, but getting a vr setup myself, would mean buying a bundle, that is, in every regard, at least the ps5vr2 but for pc, but from what reviews etc sound like its eighter: its worse then ps5vr, but cheaper, or its waaaaay better, but 3x-4x as expensive@@chatie888
I believe you can *only* use the AV1 codec if you have an RTX40xx series card. You might also need a high-end CPU. I think the WiFi 6e support is probably good enough for the rest of us.
yes that is correct, i have a 4090 so was able to use it. luckily i tried it before getting av1 and it didnt make a noticeable difference. so i think people without those cards will be impressed still.
I am not playing enough VR anymore past Pavlov to justify the purchase of this headset with its price tag. Still it looks like a real good device. I stay with my Pico Neo 3 for the time being, my 5700 works great with it even at 90Hz and it has DP too 🙂
Thoughts on Wifi 6 vs Wifi 6E? Im updating my router and getting fiber. Its 80€ for Wifi 6 or 280€ for 6€ ITs a steep cost, but probably an investment. Thoughts?
Great technical review. Do you plan to test the latency again with a wifi 7 adapter connected to your PC? The snapdragon chip in the Quest 3 is supposed to have w7 support, not sure if it's enabled yet.
I have the same tv lg wall paper it's very good just got q3 today and all I can say a very big jump from the q2 and first time useing it on my gaming pc with link cable so lots to look forward to and as for the ar demonstration i was very Impressive looking forward to ghostbusters later on in the year i'm happy with price the sweet spot is huge the let down is the battery life in my opinion I'm a fan of the channel your videos are really informal thank you for all your hard work.
What kind of performance overhead is there from encoding? I have a 4060 and I worry I will not have a good experience in PC VR due to the overhead from having to encode to video. I honestly wish there was just DP I don't want the headset for mobile I just want a good PCVR headset that doesn't cost 1k I was really excited to experience the new lenses and increased resolution but I saw in another video that there was so much overhead in terms of processing and memory usage that it was eating like 40% of the GPU in games like HLA
Using my Q2, Virtual Desktop never worked well enough for me to use it over a wired connection. And that's with a dedicated wifi 6 router sitting just a few feet away from my play space. Performance wasn't terrible, but it was never buttery smooth; it always broke immersion. I am SO STOKED to hear you say the Q3 is way better than the Q2 in this regard. Trying it tonight!
Hey Steve, how are you getting +1.000mbps? The ethernet on that router is only 1Gbps (1.000mbps). What am i missing? Some high end ones have ethernet with 2.5 and 10Gbps. How is the PC not bottlenecked?
im not even hitting anywhere near the 1000 limit of lower specs. so i don't thinks its having an impact. the value shown is the connection to my router not the wired Gbps
Im on the wireless side and if wireless can be like a on pcvr eventually pc vr might not be needed in the future but wireless headheats are just still beginning so quest 3 is really good for wireless and stuff what it can do and experience
i was thinking of giving my quest 2 to my brother since he uses oculus rift S and that's a hella problematic devices like the amount of problems it runs into sometimes is just irritating, and since i have my quest 2 and was thinking about upgrading to quest 3 i might aswell just give it to him with all my accessories XD
sorry that was deliberate as its a setting many with lower spec systems would use. but with my 4090 it was chill with 90hz and 120hz (it had more stutter at 120 for higher spec games. but 90 was smoooooooooth). the room got hot though
I just got my Quest 3 and I was hoping to use it with PCVR. Sadly, I cant get the link cable to work at ALL! My PC oculus app shows there are no issues and the device is working perfectly, but when i try to launch quest link it just gets stuck staring at 3 dots loading. The 1 time i did manage to get it loaded, it was frozen with a bunch of glitches and bugs. I tested my cable out with my quest 2 right after and it worked just fine. Im hoping this is just a software bug. I cant use airlink or virtual desktop (my internet is terrible) so link cable is my only valid option. I really hope this gets fixed soon or someone finds a solution. My specs: Ryzen 7 7800X3D RX 7900XT (updated to latest drivers 10/11) 32GB DDR5 5600 3TB m.2 ssd P.S.: I also tried using different ports, but same story. Quest 2 works, Quest 3 doesnt. I also tried reinstalling the oculus pc app. Didnt work. Tried restarting PC and headset. Nothing.
I’ve been trying to use av1 encoding and it’s not working well. I have a 7900xtx and wifi 6 router in my room connected to Ethernet. When using av1 I have 90 ping and virtual desktop said 60 ping is coming from the encoding. When using other encodings I have 30-40 ping. Anyone know a fix?
I would say I'm a casual PCVR usually bought a VR ready PC have no idea how to change or fix anything lol it eather works or it dont for me no tinkering lol
Could someone help me with this? This may just be a dumb mistake, so basically when try to link to my computer it just puts me in a black abyss with 3 dots loading, i only got it to link once and once only.
All good and dandy but us with 30 series graphics cards.... what would that be like? That would be more interesting than you using it on a high end PC.
@@SteveKnows Yeah yeah I got that :) let me elaborate. I need to know if the Quest 3 would be harder to run for my PC and my graphics card. I'd rather not have my setup burn up because the Quest 3 sucks the juice and power out of it :) I can't afford a new VR headset AND a new hardware for my PC
@@R83TV I don't have a Q3, but my Pico 4 is more or less the same resolution. I'd suggest the minimum you need is a 3080/4070 to get it running on Godlike in VD with reasonable frame rates. Having that many pixels and then compressing the image for wireless certainly pushes your hardware when compared to a display port headset.

Grate vid... but... I'm having some major issues getting full speed on my Quest 3 using wifi6 network. I'm hoping it's an issue with the firmware. On my Quest 3 the WIFI signal is hopping from 720 - 864 - 960, but my Quest 2 Is stable at 1200 Mbps. I am sitting 1 m (3 feet) from the Ruter
thats interesting, the hopping could be that someone is sharing your router? maybe it has automatic channel adjustment as a setting? i couldnt really say. as long as the signal isnt dropping below what you need, dont stress =]
I have a dedicated Access point wifi6 for my headset. Nothing else is connect and it's wired into my network. This setup gives me perfect preformence on Quest 2. Even on AirLink (and VD)
I have seen similar issues with my setup. It runs smooth though, but it annoys me.. I also seem to have less range with q3 before it degrades to unusable 😢
@SteveKnows Watching your footage i can see that your wifi coverage is fluxing to. But on 6e its lowest signal is 1700 mbps so won't be noticable. But this is a firmware bug essentially for AX ruters like yours and mine. On 5Ghz it's almost useless. The MAIN issue seems to stem from WiFi AC Bands (WiFi 5) vs. WiFi AX and AXe bands (WiFi 6 and 6e) There seems to be an issue with all AC bands with the stuttering and issues overall. This issue has been reported to META by Virtual Desktop Hopefully, Meta will have an update on this soon.

45 ms sounds like a whole year of waiting for the image... Thats over 5 times slower than native PCVR. How is this even playable without vomiting non stop?
I'm getting some connection issues with a cheap Amazon cable. Restarting the quest 3 seems to fix the issues. I also have tried airlink and it starts stuttering. I reset the Quest 3 and it fixed the issue. Definitely needs a software update
Yeah Facebooks link (wired and airlink) is broken right now. alot of issues with stutters and even being able to connect. VD is far superior to either if you have a good router.
I am having a hard time deciding if I want to focus my VR library on the device or on Steam. I feel obligated to buy my VR titles on Steam when it is an option as my PC is far more powerful. What do you do? Buy games on device or PC?
Definitely steam. Any game that you see you might like that is both on meta quest store and on steam, definitely buy the game off of steam because using a computer and the quest 3 at the same time, you get both the leverage of the strong specs of your computer and the specs of the quest 3 which will make the game look much better, perform better, and overall be funner. Unless there is a game exclusive to the meta store, focusing on pcvr would be much smarter to improve QOL
I have a GTX 1080 and Ryzen 5 2600X. I also have a Quest 2 and recently upgraded Quest 3. It handles it just fine. For some reason Virtual Desktop is also much faster/smoother than when I used my Oculus Link Cable. The quality is impressive for WiFi connection to Virtual Desktop and SteamVR. I think you would be fine.
New Q3 user … is it normal to see a “glare” for bright sources almost between my eyes and the lenses? (Not wearing glasses) Any large white/bright object produces this glare affect. Also I was surprised how many jaggies there are on lines in games like BoneLab. It looks and feels like I’m in a theme park ride wearing 3d goggles. Didn’t know if that was cause those games aren’t pushing higher resolutions?
Nice video, thanks. I think the display port vs wireless (or wired via USB) debate has now shifted from 'is it as good' to 'do you have a good enough GPU'. You can make it look similar, but to do it you need a fair bit more GPU power to push enough pixels to get the wireless looking as good as the DP equivalent. Probably not an issue on your 4090!
Getting back into VR with a Q3 order. What is the game on the cruise ship in this video? Looks like a team combat gun game but can't find it on the store.
What is the battery life like when using the quest 3 as a PCVR headset. I also use Virtual desktop to connect back to my pc over 5Gz wireless. I stream and my streams go 4 hours easy so a headset that only lasts an hour our two would be an issue. I’ve heard that the battery technology that worked for quest 2 does not work for quest 3 correctly.
I do enjoy your videos, but the company that you’re featuring in the beginning does not respond any problems i have purchased them right away because I really liked having the straps for my hands and they are very good but they sent me two left-handed knuckle holders and they have not responded to me in 3 days
Does anyone have any recommendations for Quest 3 headphones. The ones I used for quest 2 don’t work with 3 plus the Jack is on the right side of some reason??? Not to mention everything I connect Bluetooth as a solid second to 2 seconds of delay

@@JimmiZero nah wifi. Wifi 6 router. Basically everything on its max settings just testing it out and worked great
Would so notice better performance in vr going from a i7 9700 k to a i9 9900k?
@thegarch3293 I doubt you'd notice much difference honestly. If you moved up to a 13th gen then yeah probably.
This is exactly what information I was looking for. Thanks for the great video!
Thank you so much bro!!!
Hey bro! I’ve seen you around the VR scene so I am happy to help!
@@SteveKnows Hey thanks for the recognition, it's a good feeling ☺️ I've been watching your stuff for quite a while now and love the content buddy, keep it up!
Been looking for a video like this. Thank you
I honestly can't find the sweetspot on the quest 3, by which i mean it's all sweetspot
I keep moving it between the smallest ipd to the widest and i don't see a difference in clarity. Not sure what that means about my eyesight really but it was annoying finding the sweetspot with the quest 2 but it's hard to not find it on the 3
Now im even more excited for my q3 to arrive. On Q2, even highest ipd setting was blurry for me
Has anyone done a comparison with mere mortal hardware?
So Quest 3 is so good
Nice! I like to use Virtual Desktop, so this makes me happy. These videos are great and very informative.
Can you check if the latency is different between wifi 5, wifi 6 and wifi 6E?
Perhaps cable-free PCVR will finally work for me with this headset 😮
With Virtual desktop and wifi 6e router Q3 is a big improvement in wireless PCVR compared to Q2.
Those battery cover grips look very seamless! 🔥
With the Quest 3 inside the headset being night and day difference with its visual, it's clearly a winning VR headset. 👍
compared to what, the quest 2? i hearing different storys about the image quality, especially, that theres still screendoor effect due to the tilted displays and aliasing
But would adding a displayport over usbc be such a big deal for the cost? I would still want that option for fast peace games.
Was that a shiba I saw in the video!!!!! Love the content as always steve, waiting for my Q3 to arrive rn🎉
haha yes the dog made an appearance. I have 2 of them! boy & a girl THEYRE AMAZING!
I am not playing enough VR anymore past Pavlov to justify the purchase of this headset with its price tag.
Still it looks like a real good device.
I stay with my Pico Neo 3 for the time being, my 5700 works great with it even at 90Hz and it has DP too 🙂
Sounds fair tbh. That's a setup that can make a lot of things play/work just fine. having direct DP is nice too imho
NewRetroArcade: Neon is never mentioned for PC VR. It is EXCELLENT 😎👍
Great video! Could you do a Airlink vs Virtual Desktop video?
Thoughts on Wifi 6 vs Wifi 6E?
Im updating my router and getting fiber. Its 80€ for Wifi 6 or 280€ for 6€
ITs a steep cost, but probably an investment. Thoughts?
It’s not worth $200. Bandwidth isn’t the issue once you get up to wifi6, your hardware is. We’re a long way from needing wifi6e latency/bandwidth.
Does anyone know how to get 120hz on quest 3 link? Even with a link cable I don’t get the option to do 120hz it only goes up to 90
What kind of performance overhead is there from encoding? I have a 4060 and I worry I will not have a good experience in PC VR due to the overhead from having to encode to video. I honestly wish there was just DP I don't want the headset for mobile I just want a good PCVR headset that doesn't cost 1k I was really excited to experience the new lenses and increased resolution but I saw in another video that there was so much overhead in terms of processing and memory usage that it was eating like 40% of the GPU in games like HLA
Gonna be a few weeks before I buy mine. Coming up just a bit too short on the ol’ greenbacks at the moment.
the day will come and it will be glorious
gonna wait for some info about valve index 2
Very informative, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I have a 1660ti, and I'm impressed! It will be a while before I can upgrade my vdeo ard in addition to everything I had to get this week!
Video starts at 1:30
thanks man, i do have timestamps on the video for that, did they not show?
I'm getting the exact same router and quest 3 today, can't wait to try! I'm still on the fence on 100 or 500 gb
The prices on the quest 3 accessories are HORRIBLE
Right!
Your problem was with the router not the Q2. You need to change the channel width to 160mhz in the router settings.
This is what I needes to head. I have 7900XTX. Thanks!
thanks for video! I love how you review this headset. one question: does the field of view wider ? or same as Quest 2 ?
slightly wider. 15% wider but you dont notice much difference haha
I feel the same. I love the cabel free gaming
Hi I see you used only 72 fps setting. Do you have any info how it works on 90 or 120 fps?
sorry that was deliberate as its a setting many with lower spec systems would use. but with my 4090 it was chill with 90hz and 120hz (it had more stutter at 120 for higher spec games. but 90 was smoooooooooth). the room got hot though
fourth. waiting on the delivery guy for the q3. hoping its zuck himself, like gabe when he was delivering the deck personally.
they will take their sweet time while you are waiting haha
Thanks Steve.
Thanks great info here.
My specs:
Ryzen 7 7800X3D
RX 7900XT (updated to latest drivers 10/11)
32GB DDR5 5600
3TB m.2 ssd
P.S.: I also tried using different ports, but same story. Quest 2 works, Quest 3 doesnt. I also tried reinstalling the oculus pc app. Didnt work. Tried restarting PC and headset. Nothing.
Sounds like the PC port you’re using isn’t setup properly and is choking bandwidth.
Well tried playing sniper on quest 3 having trouble calculating it!! Still learning!!
Anyone know a fix?
i agree im seeing far less (well, none) stutter for pcvr. also the controller tracking is night and day better
@steveknows, awesome video ! I have the same router as you but i keep getting lags n stutters. Latency is 80 ms +. What are your router settings ?
Cool. Things are just getting better!
I would say I'm a casual PCVR usually bought a VR ready PC have no idea how to change or fix anything lol it eather works or it dont for me no tinkering lol
I'm pretty sure the video from compression will still have artifacting that you don't get with DisplayPort. But I'll probably be getting one anyway.
Great video, but I love to seen the ms when at 120hz.
same setup here but I can't get it to work. Does the pc must connect to modem through Ethernet?
I love the quest 3 so much tha I might try sleeping in vr with it
Could someone help me with this? This may just be a dumb mistake, so basically when try to link to my computer it just puts me in a black abyss with 3 dots loading, i only got it to link once and once only.
All good and dandy but us with 30 series graphics cards.... what would that be like? That would be more interesting than you using it on a high end PC.
that was the first point i made, i got to try it on a codec you guys would use that wasnt AV1 and i didnt notice any difference haha. it was great!
@@justpostedagain that was exactly my concern. Thanks for the reply bro.
Im using quest 3 with a 2080ti,ryzan 7 5700x and through virtual desktop its running smooth with high graphics setting and at 90fps on most games.i got a real performance jump from quest 2
i dont have a router with wifi 6e. and this thing doesnt have a DP port. bad combination right?
Im confused, didnt they add AV1 encoding to Nvidia drivers 4 years ago?
Why do you need a router? My pc is plugged into my modem is there a difference?
Even on AirLink (and VD)
th-cam.com/video/RFGjCXDRasM/w-d-xo.html
I have seen similar issues with my setup. It runs smooth though, but it annoys me.. I also seem to have less range with q3 before it degrades to unusable 😢
@SteveKnows Watching your footage i can see that your wifi coverage is fluxing to. But on 6e its lowest signal is 1700 mbps so won't be noticable. But this is a firmware bug essentially for AX ruters like yours and mine.
On 5Ghz it's almost useless.
The MAIN issue seems to stem from WiFi AC Bands (WiFi 5) vs. WiFi AX and AXe bands (WiFi 6 and 6e)
There seems to be an issue with all AC bands with the stuttering and issues overall. This issue has been reported to META by Virtual Desktop
Hopefully, Meta will have an update on this soon.
The passthrough is soooo grainy even in the daytime. Did you find this as well????
You need better lighting.
No better lighting then sunlight@@Spiriax
@@Spiriax No better lighting then sunlight
@@jerrycaddie838 No, sunlight is too strong. And be careful so the sunlight don't hit the lenses.
I can't say what perfect lighting is, but I've heard reports of people saying it looks grainy and then they tried it in a different environment and it looked way better. I'm sure videos about optimal passthrough conditions will be out soon.
At 4:57 what games is it where he puts the lance through the guys head?
I have a PSVR 2 and a Quest 3 and I’ve been spoiled by the PS5s graphics and would love to experience PCVR and never have. I don’t know how to build or want to learn so would buying a pre built 4090 setup be beneficial?
Hey can someone help me, just got the quest 3 (first headset). I can't connect my pc with ethernet cable (the freaking router is in the wall) and air link and steam link won't work. Does someone know a way around?
Thx !
Have you messed around with the OculusDebugTool for performance?
I'm curious the latency difference between VD and airlink
“Roo-ter”. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
For some i do get god rays on my quest 3 ive checked my lenses no residue or condensation i can see but i have such a good time with it i dont really mind all that much
did I just see Jeff, I can't get past him..... terrifying.
I made lots of mistakes like that and I have almost 20 same games on both Steam and Oculus Store.
Thinking about upgrading from the HTC vive, would a pc with a GTX 1070 Ti and i7 9600k handle this headset wired?
I have a GTX 1080 and Ryzen 5 2600X. I also have a Quest 2 and recently upgraded Quest 3. It handles it just fine. For some reason Virtual Desktop is also much faster/smoother than when I used my Oculus Link Cable. The quality is impressive for WiFi connection to Virtual Desktop and SteamVR. I think you would be fine.
New Q3 user … is it normal to see a “glare” for bright sources almost between my eyes and the lenses? (Not wearing glasses)
Any large white/bright object produces this glare affect.
Looks like a team combat gun game but can't find it on the store.
that is Contractors but I got call of duty mod on. this is a black ops 2 map!
I love mine, but I have a friend that can't get his to pair...
This review is for those that have been using the Q3 for a minute.
Does anyone have any recommendations for Quest 3 headphones. The ones I used for quest 2 don’t work with 3 plus the Jack is on the right side of some reason??? Not to mention everything I connect Bluetooth as a solid second to 2 seconds of delay
Is your router the following? I had a hard time hearing which you referenced. Thanks. (AXE5400 Tri-Band Gigabit Wi-Fi 6E Router)
The wireless option is healthy?
Steve you don't see a visual difference because you are running a 4090 at a low 72 target framerate. 🤣Try digging out an old 3060 Ti next time.
Whats the point of 120hz if youre just going to use 60
What's the name of the game in the video with castles and skeletons? It's looks good.
How is your router connected to your pc?
Better than pico 4 on godmod in Virtual desktop ?
