I love this video! I have 3 guns. A HVLP Black Widow I use for base, a HTE Black Widow for clear and a 1980's Binks Model7 for everything else. I Paint mostly motorcycles and vintage minibikes. Maybe I'm doing it wrong but so far it is working for me.
My dad was all binks 7 for painting I remember he painted lacquer we had to help him sand with 600 grit 600!!! And we had to make it shine lol we did too Polish by hand. I was 5 or 7 years old I was doing frame work at 7 years old. I'm 57 now.
Two spray guns here. Binks 7 and Devilbiss Mgb, since 1982. Either would do for everything but I have two in case I drop one in the middle of a paint job. It can happen. I think the key to success is recognizing changing conditions and making constant adjustments while spraying. I used one booth that had such a weird air flow speed deviation around the room that the gun had to be adjusted for each side of the car.
This is the first video I have seen from Pete. He is absolutely right on with gun choices and funny as shit! I bought my first Binks #7 in 1978 and have literally shot thousands of gallons of lacquers stains and every paint known to man with it. I still use it and it works as good as it did brand new. I have had to change the needle and nozzle several times just because of the volume of paint I spray with it but as long as you clean it when you're finished with it you can pick it up and it will work perfect every time.

Personally I do like to play around with different spray guns. I only owned 1 gun for almost 4 years and got great results with it. My first "Cadillac" was a Bink 7. I don't know of needles or cap, then I went to a Vocacional School. I have to set everything with that only gun, and a campbell 25 gallon compressor, with a toilet paper air filter. If you paint something with a spray can, you can Not adjust the pressure , or the fluid, you have to control, to achieve the results. You are right. Thanks: Pete for setting me straight. I had a retired aircraft re finisher friend give me a Devilbiss spray gun 40 years ago, he used to spray every finish in the aviation industry. I decided to put a new set of fenders on my 2004 dodge and paint them myself. I started to fall into the HVLP trap with the nozzles and cups, that I knew nothing about. I took a chance, and used the old gun I was taught with, and I could not believe the quality of the finish that gun laid down, in fact I think it was very forgiving in some cases. New is not always better. Only wish I could go back and buy a new truck of that era with the price tag to match. Cheer's Canada
Thanks Pete! "you don't need 7000 spray guns!" LOL. So true. I kind of figured this was the case, but it's nice to hear it from a true pro. Love your channel!
Thank you thank you thank you. My first gun was a devilbiss starting line. Cheap gun. I have a 1.3, 1.8, and a 2.0 tip for it. I've done everything with it. And all my jobs have come out great! Even did house furniture with it. Only issue with it was orange peel. But I did all primers, bases and clears with it.
I have a DeVilbiss JGA502 that must be 50 years old. LOL, well it looks like it. I spray everything with it, primer, paint, clear. I keep it very clean and watch closely what I am doing.
Perfect timing Pete. It just happen to see a 3M plastic reinforced super dupper paint spray pooper. The 30 year old #1 complained the Iwata was too heavy, 30 year old #2 said the other gave him a blister, manager said it saved them 20% in paint as they throw away the $38 tip, then finished by saying “After a couple of weeks, just throw away the gun and get another”. Now that is saving big money in paint buy throwing the gun away. That is smart! How come I never thought of that! Now, that is brain washed. Throw the gun away because we will sell you another 20-30 or more! 3M = Smarter.
This is the kind of dude I’d want to be my friend. Nice videos, I’m practicing my body work, sanding and painting on my gas saver so hopefully I’m decent when I get into restoring my old school trucks. Keep up the videos man!
I used a Snap-On spray gun that was made by Sharpe that I bought when I started going to tech school for auto-body back in 89 and it was still working like new when it was stolen 4 years ago. It just had a perfect feel to it for me and even one of my old bosses preferred how it felt and sprayed over his Binks guns. I only had that one gun for all those years and cleaned it inside and out every time I finished with it. Was it a better quality gun than all others? NO… it just felt it had better fit and balance to me. It’s an individuals personal preference what gun they use. Pete hit it right on the head. A cheap gun can work as well as an expensive one if adjusted right. Go with what feels right to you, and don’t fall into the false belief that each product needs to have a certain gun that is used only for that product.
Thanks for all the effort you put into showing everyone how things are done and being very blunt and true. I've been watching a lot of your vids and I have learnt a lot. Very Inspiring.
I’m a painter at a used car body shop. There’s times where I have to paint 4 cars at a time (no booth). I can definitely say for someone in my situation. Multiple guns is necessary. Ain’t got all day cleaning a gun in between cars
Yep same here.Especially when using blender for blending in light metallics .Ill have days where I have to paint 3 bumpers ,3 different colors in the same booth.Production is a whole different animal .I can see where Pete is coming from I’d use my LPH400 for everything if I could but 1 gun just wouldn’t work for me especially when I have 4-5 cars a day to paint .
I Love your agitator cup! Your's is only the second one I've ever seen, other than in catalogs. I don't remember the brand I have but it has a magnetic agitator in the bottom. I started out with a Sharpe in the late 70's and saved up for an MBC. Sharpe became my dedicated primer gun. Now I have a SuperNova and an LPH400. Thanks for all your hard work and advice.
Them old school spraygun does make alot of overspray god damn 😂😂...this man bought a sata 5000 rp & iwata and still goes back to them old school spraygun he have 😂😂😂😂
This dudes a trip I love it, I run 3 spray booths at work and am sometimes painting 6 or more jobs at the same time so I require multiple guns but for the home gamer you just need a primer gun and a topcoat gun
Right on Pete! I have one gun and I have used it for putting finishes on woodworking project and now 2k High Build primer, epoxy sealer, color coat and clear coat. The only thing that I have is a Teflon cup for water base finishes and another one for urethane finishes.
I settled on sata 4000b rp 1.3 does all I need to do. I have a cheap harbor freight purple gun with 2. Tip for high build. If I had started with the #7 I doubt I would change. 👍🏻
😂😂😂 I still watch your channel because you keep it real about the paint life! Honestly I have about 4 guns and that’s the SATA bf RP 2.5 for polyester primers, regular primer gun air gunza 1.8 and my base and clear gun…IWATA LPH400 and SATA 5500 HVLP 1.4. And you are right about being able to use one gun because I’ve used SATA for base and clear as well as the IWATA and the finish was great with both
I always say the best spray gun is the one that works for you.I don’t need multiple guns but many times I’m spraying multiple colors at the same time especially in a production setting
I have 35 spray guns & I love them, I don't have time to actually use them as i am too busy looking up the data sheets as to what adjustments & pressures & mixes to spray & paints to spray. But boy when i get through all this data I am going to be a good painter...
Glad to help out If your a beginner I suggest to look into purchasing the Devilbiss STARTER LINE kit which includes 2 guns -- Primer gun -- and a Base Clear Gun with interchangeable needle and nozzle included.. Good Price and great starter product. They also have a 3 gun set that includes the touch up gun!
I started with a Binks model 7, ever seen the one that heats enamel so it flows, drys as it hits, I have a gun for base coat and one for clear cause I'm lazy, each one set for what I like, and a cheap primer gun, Great video, tells it like it is.

Seems like all my old guns crapped out all at once....I think they all need new needles....I bought the Black Widow HTE from Harbor Freight with a coupon about a week ago...Could not be more happy...Serious a great gun for $189...Even feels good in your hand
Pete you need to make a video on how to clean a spray gun. What do you clean your gun with? And how to take the gun apart and how to put the gun together? Thank you
I have a Binks model 69 and a binks 2000 and a small gun for doing jams hard to reach areas and of course guilty have bought hvlp and Chinese kits 3 guns different tips sizes
@@Whitening98 ohh those packing seals; if u message ur seller he might send u new one for free. I had same problem where paint was leaking out when I cleaned and damaged packing
My grandad bought a Binks model 7 in 1946 after WWII, I still have it and have sprayed a lot of surfaces with it. I switched to SATA in 1994 and have not looked back I spray every day and buy a new gun every 4 or 5 years just to get the newest or latest I do like the gravity guns better than the siphon feed cause whatever you put in the cup will spray.
I have a black 62 vw sunroof, painted at a Ford dealership !! yea, painted over the weekend, 20+ years ago, Binks 7 by a friend of mine. Now it is time for me to get a gun, at school, we have SATA. But 700+ plus ??
Pete: "Who needs 14 different kinds of food in your refrigerator, I have one Giant hunk of Bologna and I can eat that fucker for every meal.... cuz I can" Don't be a fuckin showboat kids.
You are correct, if you know how to paint a car, you can make pretty much any gun work. Issue is that it depends on what type of shop you work at. Working for a high production shop, I absolutely need a shit load of guns. Not because I'm a greedy piece of shit, it's because I can be spraying up to 4-5 different colors at once. Always have separate clear guns, as well. Don't have time to break down my guns during the day. So basically I have 2 primer guys, one is a back up. 2 sealer guns, one is a back up, 4 base guns and 2 clear guns and yeah one is a back up. Not showing off, time is money. Guns need to work everytime I pick them up.
apricate this video alot, been doing research all day and was thinking damn i cant paint my project its going to be $800 for just the gun and attachments. going to pick up a decent $170 kit and just take my time and learn to do it properly wont be perfect but nothing is, Thanks!!
Awesome video not trying to bring any more confusion to the topic but what can you tell us about conventional spray guns and LVLP (not be confused with HVLP) guns. Maybe this could be a part two video on the subject. Thank you Pete
I came across someone else’s vid, an old one, where they’re showing a 50’s Buick century in dark green. And who’s dingy old shop is it sitting in? My friend Pete. He wasn’t around but they seemed real impressed
Pete - Thanks for great video! I'm new to this and just starting to paint with a gun. Could you please do a video on what size tips are preferable and why for different types of paint, epoxy primer, bases, clears? Or do you have to thin your materials to make them work with a particular tip?
I'm not Pete, but I'm sure he would say that the tip size is not as important as the knowledge of how to adjust the gun for the conditions you will be spraying under, and your willingness to adapt to those situations. I personally will tell you that these experts that show you how to open the fluid needle all the way to get the "correct" adjustment are "quacks". Wide open throttle is not the only way to operate a spray gun. Once in the nineties when my primary spray gun was down, I used my Nesco 868 lvlp primer gun with a 1.8 tip for everything. Did I have the fluid wide open? No. Did I run that lvlp gun at 40psi for clearcoat? Absolutely! You're the painter; you make the gun work for you.
@@ericmark472 you're certainly welcome. Practice makes perfect. Before you aim the gun at your actual project, make at least 4 passes on a test fender or something with your initial settings and technique to see if it's wet, but not too wet

My favorite part is your soft and gentle personality. 😂
Thanks for giving me the idea to build a paint booth filter with wheels on it for my garage door. Worked out beautifully, You are the man!
Binks 7 was my first paint gun, it could spray any paint perfect.
Thanks Pete for being real… enjoy your educational videos…just got out of service and time to live the dream
Back when i started in this trade there was one gun Binks#7 that's all you needed. I typed this in before you said that's what you used Amazing.
Here, here. I love my handme down gun. 30 sata. Love it.
The preacher and the teacher we love you Pete;)
God bless!!!
I’m a painter at a used car body shop. There’s times where I have to paint 4 cars at a time (no booth). I can definitely say for someone in my situation. Multiple guns is necessary. Ain’t got all day cleaning a gun in between cars
In that case you should try the PPS system. Cuts clean up time to a minimum.
@@PhillipHall01 PPS is a cup, not a gun. Still have to clean guns you muppet.
@@SOLDOZER
I never said other wise koo koo lol 😊
Yep same here.Especially when using blender for blending in light metallics .Ill have days where I have to paint 3 bumpers ,3 different colors in the same booth.Production is a whole different animal .I can see where Pete is coming from I’d use my LPH400 for everything if I could but 1 gun just wouldn’t work for me especially when I have 4-5 cars a day to paint .
This is the greatest video ever 😅😅 informative but yet honest n funny
I Love your agitator cup! Your's is only the second one I've ever seen, other than in catalogs. I don't remember the brand I have but it has a magnetic agitator in the bottom.
I started out with a Sharpe in the late 70's and saved up for an MBC. Sharpe became my dedicated primer gun. Now I have a SuperNova and an LPH400. Thanks for all your hard work and advice.
This is pure gold. I love people who don't buy and don't sell bullshit to others.
Sure as hell dont need multiple guns at home.
I use the spectrum hte from harbor freight has 1.3 and I love and it’s my go to gun put the psi on 28-30 and let it roll
yeah ive used that gun for clear coat before... not bad
Just stumbled across this channel and I enjoyed the honest talk, I have two guns a siphon and a backup gravity gun. I'd rather keep it simple.
Right on Pete! I have one gun and I have used it for putting finishes on woodworking project and now 2k High Build primer, epoxy sealer, color coat and clear coat. The only thing that I have is a Teflon cup for water base finishes and another one for urethane finishes.
My Binks Gun has been used for everything from house paint to wood deck sealer and it still WORKS LIKE A TANK!
I settled on sata 4000b rp 1.3 does all I need to do. I have a cheap harbor freight purple gun with 2. Tip for high build. If I had started with the #7 I doubt I would change. 👍🏻
yup with you on a Binks model 7 had one since 1984 and love it
😂😂😂 I still watch your channel because you keep it real about the paint life!
SATA Mini Jet - Owned it for 25 years and it's absolutely a little gem. You would have to pry it from my hands even after I'm dead.
I have 35 spray guns & I love them, I don't have time to actually use them as i am too busy looking up the data sheets as to what adjustments & pressures & mixes to spray & paints to spray. But boy when i get through all this data I am going to be a good painter...
I'm still using my Deviles starter gun kit I bought I think about 7 years ago I use that gun for everything from primer to clear 😎
Like Pete, he tells it like it is no BS,I got. Straight to the point. Love it 😍
Damn I got a sprayer to return now. Thank you for this honest review.
I had no clue what gun to even buy for my first gun or how many I needed. This was a big help.
Glad to help out
If your a beginner I suggest to look into purchasing the Devilbiss STARTER LINE kit which includes 2 guns -- Primer gun -- and a Base Clear Gun with interchangeable needle and nozzle included.. Good Price and great starter product. They also have a 3 gun set that includes the touch up gun!
@@diyautoschool thanks brother
I started with a Binks model 7, ever seen the one that heats enamel so it flows, drys as it hits, I have a gun for base coat and one for clear cause I'm lazy, each one set for what I like, and a cheap primer gun, Great video, tells it like it is.
St8 Facts...I've been subed for years and I've been painting for 20+ years. Thanks for always being honest ant str8 to the point💯 ...we prime with supernova at my shop🤷🏾♂️
Pete badass painting cribs and shit. You name it Pete will and have painted it. My man has taught me so much. Keep painting and talking the real sh*t that people need to hear.
I been watching you for a year I learn a lot thanks, I got my little shop and painted a few cars with just two guns 1,3 n 1,4 ur funny bro keep youtubing
I respect you Pete...I have a ton of guns though so I guess I'm the problem. I really like the Upol primers and Euro clears. I've followed you for years. You and my uncle are cut from the same cloth. That's where I learned the little I know.
Hilarious you whipped out my life's story... #7,Satamini Sata 1st version 2000 pretty much the same. Still use 7 . Never tried the Harbour Freight for liquid bondo going to try
...
Thank you
Thank you for the straight forward explanation!
I have a Binks model 69 and a binks 2000 and a small gun for doing jams hard to reach areas and of course guilty have bought hvlp and Chinese kits 3 guns different tips sizes
so true , i use $80 chinese DV1 clone and it worked great for full car (primer, base, clear) and as a beginner really liked the results.
Only issue ive run across is build quality. My dv1 messed up after like 6 months
@@Whitening98 u have genuine? What went wrong?
@@FPSAnarchy I have a genuine but my china one messed up. It started leaking air from the packing but where the needle goes in
@@Whitening98 ohh those packing seals; if u message ur seller he might send u new one for free. I had same problem where paint was leaking out when I cleaned and damaged packing
@@FPSAnarchy I'll give it a try thanks!
36 dollar jet tool gun 1.2 tip layed some nice material vrs a 150. Bought 700 what ever devilbis n love it!.
I agree experience is the best but as long as you learn from your mistakes
But 700+ plus ??
same here Pete one model 7 and a mpc. the mpc gun i bought 48 years ago model 7 about 40 years ago
PETE, you're right about everything, just remember keep it clean 💯 👌
Pete: "Who needs 14 different kinds of food in your refrigerator, I have one Giant hunk of Bologna and I can eat that fucker for every meal.... cuz I can" Don't be a fuckin showboat kids.
I would love to see you pick up a Binks 2001 and do a review/comparison to modern guns!
This is awesome!! Well said my friend Pete!!
That intro/rant was super funny 🤣🤣🤣
Love this guy he speaks the truth no bs in this channel 🤘
I appreciate the videos Pete👍
That is 🔥 I need my Q50 looking like that
apricate this video alot, been doing research all day and was thinking damn i cant paint my project its going to be $800 for just the gun and attachments. going to pick up a decent $170 kit and just take my time and learn to do it properly wont be perfect but nothing is, Thanks!!
I've been looking for you page for a min! Thought it disappeared. Thought I was subscribed smh
Awesome video not trying to bring any more confusion to the topic but what can you tell us about conventional spray guns and LVLP (not be confused with HVLP) guns. Maybe this could be a part two video on the subject.
Thank you Pete
I like my walcom 360 as it's by far the best clear gun I have used
WOW! Aint heard that name in many years -- WALCOM --- Didn't even know they where still around.. I had one many years ago and it was a work horse..
Thanks pete you always keep it real i learned alot thanks to you and your diy school
I wish my friend petes binks 7 could talk
Man your so true
I have two guns and different tips and Needles for both
Your Supernova is LS version. This is a base gun. The WS ir for clear. But of course you can spray all with this
Pete, what nozzle/tip set-up do you use in your Binks Model 7
@@karsbkool Thanks! Really appreciate your reply. I have plenty to learn.
@@ericmark472 you're certainly welcome. Practice makes perfect. Before you aim the gun at your actual project, make at least 4 passes on a test fender or something with your initial settings and technique to see if it's wet, but not too wet
I have my grandfathers binks #7. My dumbass let primer dry in it like 25 years ago. I need to dig it out and try to get it cleaned up and rebuilt.
You are a CLASSIC 👍Appreciate your advice..Rock On🔥
And once again- straight up TRUTH
