I’ve been painting for 36 years and gotta say bottom to top is the way to go. When you go bottom to top you see your overlap way better than top to bottom cause top to bottom you will lose your pattern by the cup somewhat . Meaning less likely to run and get a better even pattern overlap
Bottom to top has helped me so much on doors when painting in my at home booth. I lack lighting and it has been a task trying to find my wet edge from top to bottom. This is the truth.
I've been painting on cars ..and industrial stuff for over 30 years..I was aviation certified for Bell helicopter ..Boeing and Bombardier..I also done powder coating for about 4 years ..I mostly used Devilbiss guns and for the past 8 been using a teknaprolite ..don't like it ..but couldn't afford better until recently when I bought a Sata x5500..but im restoring a 67 plymouth gtx and saving the new gun for it . I have been following you for a while now and you seem to have the same style as o do paint from bottom ..heavy on clear ..high pressures ..but man you can paint ..im having troubles with paint match and cloudiness in silvers ..but our v.o.c crap is different here in Canada ..that coupled with my old gun and getting older ..now 51..eye sight diminishing and painting in an old garage are not helping ..keep your videos coming ..im learning a lot ..you are awesome 👌 👏
Im in Canada aswell...I use a Tekna Prolite every day! What do you mean by cloudiness? Try tightening up your overlap and drop coat/orientation coat is important. This will get your metallics to layout properly. On the Prolite i spray coverage coats at 20psi and about 17psi for drop coat. Thats with a 1.3 tip and i believe im running the TE20 air cap.
Hey man I just want to say thank you for all the work you put into these videos. I had a furniture business and have now transitioned into construction and homebuilding, but learned a lot here about finishing conditions and surface preparation. Be well!

My teacher always trained me to start at the bottom just so you know your covered but I have been starting up top so I can see how things are going then when I get to the middle of the panel where it’s harder to I have already learned how things are going and it helps me finish everything good even thought I have trouble seeing
I started spraying in the furniture restoration world. Kinda fell in love with it. Now moving towards automotive spraying particularly motorcycles. Thanks for the info. Keep it up.

I would love to see you demo a Devilbiss Plus Gun. I have 3 of those and I switched to an Iwata lph400 with the orange cap for clear. But I remember you could get a Glass finish with the Devilbiss. It just used more paint. Im painting my 1955 Belair soon and I can't decide which gun I want to use. Old Skool or New Skool.
Thanks for the videos Brian, I really appreciate them. They help a beginner like me stay motivated until spring time when the weather returns to a reasonable temperature. I think as a beginner and watching your videos probably one of the best instructional items I’ve learned is what not to do. Lolol…. Actually that’s a complement and the truth. I hope you have a great weekend.
Beat me to it. Was going to say this. The Kiwami 4 is the successor for the W400. The Wider4L is the successor to the LPH400 LV4. These guns were only released for the Japanese/Russian market. Thats it you sold me a decent gun at a good price I already ordered it off amazon im a beginner an didn’t know absolutely nothing about guns an which one to go with but you definitely help my choice out 🙏🏾🙏🏾 i appreciate your videos thank you
Love your videos, and really appreciate what you’re doing here! Planning to paint my ‘73 Bronco this spring, so watching your videos is like a course for me!
I love this gun, my favorite clear coat gun. It matches any gun out there if you're willing to learn it. I got mine for $150 from Japan with cup. It is the same gun as Bellaria. Full name is KIWAMI4-BA4J. If your cap don't say that, you have a different gun. Stunning gun.
Awesome gun...and the width is much larger then my old hte3 ( which will now become a primer gun ) . I wouldn't want the patter any larger. No Tiger stripping at all and feels as large a spray pattern as I can happily manage. Best gun I've used and the price is amazing.
The more I watch these the more I want to get into painting. I have a 1986 Cressida and a 1986 Corolla in need of paint. I might have to invest the money and give it a try.
I work in a factory that builds presses from the ground up...and I'm their finish painter and I was told to start from the top when you spray if you paint from the bottom it can Lead to runs.
I think spraying bottom to top is easier to see the dry line because you're eyes are looking down on the spray. If I'm painting the whole car on the last coat I would finish on top to minimize the overspray from the sides. I thinking of doing an extra last coat just on top because I like to start from the top and there is less chance of a run on the horizontal surfaces.
Thoroughly enjoy your craft. Value all of the descriptions, discussions and best advice. Such an intriguing discipline. Simply lovely results. Admire the true pros 🏆👌
I only spray from bottom to top if I have to so that I can keep my wet edge. I find it easier to watch reflection of my lights (to see if I'm spraying wet or dry) if I start at top and work my way down.
I just bought the air gunsa, it arrived yesterday and cant wait to use it. It is my first paint gun. I know i will love painting so im adding this one to my wish list so i keep growing
@@philtucker1224 not yet. Im going to buy a used one from a friend It is a 150lt, 2hp 3450rpm with doble pistons. I dont know the cfm but i think it is suficient for DIY. Here, new ones are around 800$-1200$, he is selling it to me for 550$
I was lucky to pick up two Bellarias second hand from two different pawn shops. One clean and the other caked in candy and glitter, but cleaned up perfectly. I also picked up a Kiwami but it's a siphon feed gun. I couldn't find much info on it but assumed as it was physically smaller that it was going to be a smaller fan and a slower gun. Perhaps better for stuff like motor cycles, bikes and odd jobs where you don't want to smash on the paint. Haven't used it yet as I'm not up to that point in the project but might have to find something else to paint just to have a play with it!
I love my Bellaria, had it for about 8 years. I just painted Mazda Soul Red Crystal 46V on my sons Subaru GC8, it did the black wet on wet primer, ground, mid coat and HS clear all through a 1.3 tip absolutely perfectly. I think the newer gun you are using is a bit lighter and saves a little bit of materials and uses a bit more air. I'll probably keep using what I've got but might get another Iwata if I need a second gun. Love the Bellaria though..
differences between the new and old model is the overall weight, a redesigned air valve, and supposedly they reduced the pressure at the cap by 0.5-1.5bar. from the data sheet perspective they're both the same gun
The Kiwami4 is made in japan. I have one. It is just an ergonomically updated gun. The fluid tips even are the same.. I've swapped them just to see@mitchellferre1652
Brian the iwata spray pattern size look similar to the devilbiss gti pro lite.thanks for video and spending your hard earned money to make these videos for other people 👍
Hey Brian, awesome video. I think you really explained and showed the vital points very well. I have to agree with you, I've been doing this job since sep 2010, and I love it. When I paint, I like to start from the top, simply because I'm already standing up most of the time. But to be honest, I never saw any difference in starting positions. What does make sense, and I know you mentioned it before, but I think you could emphasise even more, is starting from away of your filters, moving towards them. Even if you are doing some DIY, without any filters, or real ventilation. Open a door or window, move from furthest to closest. You have to let some ventilation in though, let the fumes get out. Having the biggest fan is really worth it, so be wise, follow Brians advise. Invest in your tools. Paying "a lot" once is usually cheaper than paying "less over and over". A question back at you Brian: In Germany, we are really car crazy. We like our rides to look good. So painting ANY edges is vital. Colour and clear. I paint edges from 3 sides basically - front, edge, back. I never really see you emphasise that too much, how do you handle that with like a dismounted front bumper, or a round fender edge ?
dude i couldnt agree more with your statement about painting very well said. I bought a sata 5000 very good gun and went the cheap route with some backups in case i had a seal rupture or failure on my main setup. went with the black widows cheapy's from harbor freight and was forced to use them a couple weeks ago and i was pleasantly surprised they worked very well and have come a long way since the first versions. I'm definitely gonna try this one out thgh
Brian is speedy. It's like movin your pc mouse, you don't look at your hand, then screen, then hand again, and so forth. Your hand and arm just move, your eyes on the prize, always follow close behind, where the paint hits the area. Look ->with
Great video its always nice to see reviews of spray guns since there are so many options to choose from it would be nice to see more videos on the fuji or apollo turbine sprayers
How does this one compare to the Astro EURO HE 103, with exception to price. "Thank You" for the outstanding content !! Now get them shirts back in stock !!
Actually, there's quite a bit of FLG5 videos from various users. It's probably a more versatile gun than others in its class, but I can tell you now that its best application tip size is 1.4 vs 1.3. The fan is wider with the 1.4 and lower pressure is needed to wet the panel.
Great video! But I can't find this Kiwami 4 available now. There is a 'Kiwami' on amazon that looks the same but without the '4' on the body. Is this the same, or is there a newer variant of this I could look for? Thx!
Top vs bottom depends on the booth, if you have a downdraft and start at the bottom overspray will always be sucking down over your passes. Using slow reducer like you it probably wouldnt be a issue but in my busy shop we are forced to used fast and might cause a problem. I guess in your booth it dont matter. I like the bottom more because if you dont like your peal early you can correct as you get higher to the more visible areas. Whats your thoughts?
I spray in a down draft and still prefer bottom to top. It just feels more comfortable to me, even though i was taught to spray top to bottom... We use a medium activator
Hi Brian, I noticed you didn't mix any clear base with the black before the orientation coat? so all you do for the orientation coat is what? drop the pressure a bit and be further away? doesn't that mean it will land dry? Thank you. Bob
Depends if your garage is cold or if humidity levels are high... Im assuming your using solvent base coat? I spray in both conditions, except at work we use waterborne paint. I wouldnt recomend that outside of a booth... Give yourself 10-12 mins flash time between coats. If you think your garage is a bit on the cool side, do a 15 min flash. The booth is just a more controlled environment compared to a garage.
Man I feel a lot better about having bought this when they first showed up on eBay 😂. I wanted a Bellaria but prices had started going up even then. I haven't had a chance to use it and got it way back in May for around $260 shipped and it looks like pri es are even less now. I may grab another one. Thanks for all these awesome vids!
Killer video again! Hey Brian could you make a video specifically on technique? I've been told that once I make a pass I should be releasing the trigger from material back to air move towards the overlap and going to material. So air, material, air, material. I believe I noticed you do this accouple times in this video but not sure. THANKS 👍
@@PaintSociety Thank you for the clarification. I'm having trouble to adapt to the technique I mentioned. I do see it possibly being beneficial spraying primer or blending within a panel for small repairs and save on material and to keep it as small as possible. I'm glad you mention it's more of a preference thing rather than right or wrong. 🙌
@@fvalle90 Basically there's 3 techniques: Carefully let go of the trigger, as you described, so you get: paint, air, paint, air... Turn your wrist out. So you never let go of the trigger, just turn your wrist to the right or left. Do a combination of the above. In my opinion, I have to agree with Brian, it's pure preference. Try out the techniques if you like, see what feels best, and what gives you the best results. Try out with "easier colours" like black or white, and work towards silver and 3-coats.
Love the videos, you have taught me so much, Keep them coming. I painted right out of high school about 25 years ago. I am starting again because I have missed it; I was looking at the east wood P500 Primer gun and the lph400-lvx extreme basecoat orange cap. I have an 80 Gallon compressor 7.5 hp air is not a problem. What are your thoughts on those two are would you recommend something else.
I've been painting for 40 years i spray from bottom to top just like you and make sure to stop at a different place on the second coat so I don't put 4 coats of clear in one spot if someone wants to spray top to bottom i don't think it matters
I paid just under $200 for the HF Black Widow (Sata knockoff). It has a little bit bigger fan than this Iwata but the Iwata quality is probably better.
Hey Brian! How it compares to the FLG5 ? I have to say I was amazed how wet you did the first clear coat. I just make a quick pass to make it tack and then I make it wet thats all. The finish is as always flawless. Great job! Greetings from Hungary.
The Kiwami4 chews through more paint than the FLG5. Atomization is very close with the Iwata nudging it slightly. Keep in mind the FLG5 was designed to run at 35 psi, though most don't use it at that pressure.
spraying with a smaller fan is always better. i’m impressed with the kiwami update from w400. it definitely looks more cheaply made especially the nozzle snd cap. sprays the same but i would bet my last dollar it won’t be as durable over time
I would be way more interested in the air supply side of things.. the gun at the end is just the tail of the big dog that is upfront, especially for DIY'ers. Dry+clean air at high volume for a pro/amateur gun in the HVHP/HVLP range is hard to achieve for someone who doesn't have a professional booth to spray in.. Personally I live in the Tropics, so dry air at high volume is especially hard to come by for me here.
Great job on this one!! I have all of the old w400 and lph400 air caps minus the purple and the bellaria fan is between the lv2 and wbx caps in size. This new gun seems to be the same as the old bellaria.
You were saying top->bottom or vice versa? The fact that you went bottom to top at the back, top to bottom in the middle.... and it all looks perfect... proves that it really doesn't matter! :D
it sprayed really nice im thinking of buying this gun also its $250 in canada ....what are your thoughts or is there a better gun for that price or not much more..?..at the moment im just spraying my dodge charger with it..
Thanks for the awesome videos! Starting my research for a paint job in a few months. So do you need a gun for base/clear and one for prime/sealer? Also, if you prime and sand w 400 is it still a good idea to seal after? Thanks!
I’ve been painting for 36 years and gotta say bottom to top is the way to go. When you go bottom to top you see your overlap way better than top to bottom cause top to bottom you will lose your pattern by the cup somewhat . Meaning less likely to run and get a better even pattern overlap

Your hand and arm just move, your eyes on the prize, always follow close behind, where the paint hits the area.

Hi brian..gti prolite or iwata bellaria classic plus w400,which one the best..i want to buy it
Both are great !
I have a down draft booth, so I spray clear from the top then downwards to put the over spray into the filter
If you get the chance please do a full review of the FLG5, for base and clear. I've been loving it. And it's only about $150
And ANI 160 at same price.
Good ideas flg5 not à lot of vidéos, can you please do à full review and gîte your opinions ? Thanks u very much
The gunman did a review for the ANI F160, FLG5 and the Iwata AZ3 HTE2. FLG5 and F160 are both very good for their prices, F160 has a bigger fan.
Actually, there's quite a bit of FLG5 videos from various users. It's probably a more versatile gun than others in its class, but I can tell you now that its best application tip size is 1.4 vs 1.3. The fan is wider with the 1.4 and lower pressure is needed to wet the panel.
I got the Wider with a 2.5mm setup and am loving it!
Thanks for the review Brian and a nice job
Great work as always. How do you feel this compares to the ASTRO you used a while back? Thanks again.
Brian as I watched you spray the clear, the fan looked very uniform
I couldn't find one on Amazon. They have a LPH80. THANKS for sharing all of your knowledge. I really appreciate it 🙏
Only eBay has it. Amazon may have copies.
Nice one Brian be honest im not a sprayer I just enjoy watching
looks great I'm going to be painting a service body I've ordered
Preach! Good reputable companies make cheaper guns that do work!
You sir are giving me the confidence to paint me and my homies shitboxes to get them lookin crispy.
I’m just now starting out this is the gun i spray with. It’s not to bad hopefully I can upgrade soon.
Great video! But I can't find this Kiwami 4 available now. There is a 'Kiwami' on amazon that looks the same but without the '4' on the body. Is this the same, or is there a newer variant of this I could look for? Thx!
I like starting bottom too, I feel I can see what I’m doing much better because I can hold my gun lower than my eyes and look down on my pattern
Thank you for the video Brian. I'm just getting into painting as a hobby, I have some experience, but not a lot. I think I'll invest in this gun.
Great video brother! It produce a great finish for sure. Turn up the beats lets paint!
Haha thanks for watching !!
You do beautiful work !
Hi Brian, I noticed you didn't mix any clear base with the black before the orientation coat? so all you do for the orientation coat is what? drop the pressure a bit and be further away? doesn't that mean it will land dry? Thank you. Bob
Just brought this gun, l haven’t regretted my decision.
Is flash time affected from being in a both vs garage? Since the airflow is better in a booth should we wait longer in our garage?
Good question.
@@splash5974 thank you, it's been around 60 to 65 in my garage recently
Hi Brian, I placed my order for Monday delivery. Looking forward to trying out this new gun! Thanks, John
Good luck John!
Nicely done....
Watching you lay on paint is like watching Bob Ross relaxing and you make it look easy like hey I could do that. LOL
Nice job again! Cheers! 👍🏴😎
THANKS 👍
It’s really personal preference but I prefer to keep it moving so there aren’t any changes in the air. Notice how I never really stop the whole time
@@PaintSociety Thank you for the clarification. I'm having trouble to adapt to the technique I mentioned. I do see it possibly being beneficial spraying primer or blending within a panel for small repairs and save on material and to keep it as small as possible. I'm glad you mention it's more of a preference thing rather than right or wrong. 🙌
@@fvalle90 Basically there's 3 techniques:
Carefully let go of the trigger, as you described, so you get: paint, air, paint, air...
@@MrDuLukes Thank you for great insight! 🙌
What are your thoughts on those two are would you recommend something else.
my friend , do you recomend on iwata kiwami ?
I've been painting for 40 years i spray from bottom to top just like you and make sure to stop at a different place on the second coat so I don't put 4 coats of clear in one spot if someone wants to spray top to bottom i don't think it matters
What is your recommendation for the an air compressor specs to use the spray gun in a garage painting setup? PSI? CFM? Minimum tank capacity…60 gal?
This is all on the internet, 60+ gallons but the more important part is cfm matched to your gun, probably 12-13+ cfm @90 psi
Hi, what nozzle tip were you using and which would tip would you recommend for versatile use of fluids?
Great job on this one!! I have all of the old w400 and lph400 air caps minus the purple and the bellaria fan is between the lv2 and wbx caps in size. This new gun seems to be the same as the old bellaria.
Nice music 👍 always great advice on painting
Do you prefer this gun or the harbor freight black widow?
The first pattern was perfect 🤩 man. Beautiful fan of paint. Not a bad wee spray gun guys
You were saying top->bottom or vice versa?
The fact that you went bottom to top at the back, top to bottom in the middle.... and it all looks perfect... proves that it really doesn't matter! :D
I’ll start bottom to too and while I’m painting I just keep it moving. Makes no difference to me
it sprayed really nice im thinking of buying this gun also its $250 in canada ....what are your thoughts or is there a better gun for that price or not much more..?..at the moment im just spraying my dodge charger with it..
Thanks for the quality Brian God bless
Brian would u recommend a devilbiss gti pro lite for a diy first gun??👍
very nice finish, but whats the CFM needed? ...
I'm currently using the 3m performance and was looking to get something else to dedicate for clear that won't break the bank
Are they legal to use here in the U.S. though? I dont think the bellaria or regular w400(non Lv) are.
Great videos !
Thanks for the awesome videos! Starting my research for a paint job in a few months. So do you need a gun for base/clear and one for prime/sealer? Also, if you prime and sand w 400 is it still a good idea to seal after? Thanks!
I'm looking for a third gun just for base i have a sata jet 5000 for my clear when you sprayed the base it looked like it sprayed nice
