Thank you man. You’ve helped me a lot on the bondo and paint situation. Not just this video. I’ve followed this whole section and started watching more once I hit the bondo stage of my car Just got fear struck and your helping me and a lot of others get past that I bet
I have viewed MANY MANY bodywork and painting tips on you tube, this particular video thus far is the only one that explained the different results you get painting the car take apart in pieces or painting the car assembled, you have answered many questions for me in this regard. I will be honest I was reluctant to watch your videos for awhile because of the unprofessional way you present yourself with the foul language and such, but I have realized some of your teachings are invaluable and Im willing to deal with your language..LOL I like the fact you point out mixing the two separate cans of paint to together so there will be no mismatch of color between the two, great tip
Same here, but Pete is a dedicated craftsman and I respect him. I have learned a lot from him. No BS, no scripted presentation. Just good sensible teaching after I learned to laugh at his language.
Hello Pete and Minny. Thank you very much for this series of videos. I have a 1966 Mustang and want to do the job right ! This series has been a real help in learning how to do the job right. Thank you both again. All my best Bobby
hey pete i have been painting since i was 14 im old school eye ball your mix im only 44 but i think you show the youngsers how it is really done in the real world thanks for that
Hey Pete, I like your straight talking no BS style of getting things done. Your wisdom and experience is priceless for DIY people. With that said how can viewers support you financially for the wealth of wisdom you you have in your cranium!
One of the best videos on you tube if not THE best. Thank you guys for your time and effort. People like me who are beginner's on this, videos like this are very very helpful, so thank you.
i like the way Pete teaches. He lays it out straight and simple with no BS, and the techniques he uses comes from years of experience. Thanks for sharing your wisdom with me and look forward to seeing more. Maybe like airbrushing and metal flaking tricks. I have sprayed many houses with an airless sprayer and gun control is the key to a great paint job. I also batch my paint too. My 71 AMX is going to be my first car paint job so these videos are giving me the tips needed to be confident about it. Thanks Pete and Minnie!
I’m guessing Minnie was narrating from outside the booth looking through a window maybe. It’s nice to see a video with people behaving like real people. Very refreshing. And funny.
12:42 "That's about a 3 to 4 second situation going on there" ……….. Classic . I learned as much as I got good honest laughs out of this video.. You two are a classic duo. Many Thanks Pete and Minnie. I will definitely be referencing your video when I actually get ready to start my first HVLP paint project. Props.
My Friend Pete! As a retired teacher (in an alternate school) I just gotta say you got it going on. I have learned so much and you have helped to boost my confidence. Restoration under way. Working on a VW Westy. First section complete with paint around the windshield area (after new metal. I farmed that out). Perfect place to play. Most of my fuck ups will be hidden under the luggage rack. The others? Proud moments of learning under the guidance of new Friend Pete. I will only keep getting better. Thanks eh?
They could call the show...Jackass garage or maybe...Fake it until you make it....or Angry guys garage. Hell it's too easy to slam this channel. I don't get what you guys see in it. Low quality at best.
@@lawncuttingplusdelta trust me when i say I'll never waste another second of my life on this angry hack, but you never know until you watch. Like I said in my post. I don't know what you see in this channel. Hell, some people even watch Scotty Kilmer and he's so unorganized and slobby that he can't even get a car into his garage. Why would anyone take auto advice from a guy who works in the mud because his shop in a dung pile. Either way that's the great thing with our country. You get to choose what is good for you.
Thanks Pete. Painting a boat with my son in the morning, and you answered all my paint gun set up questions. I especially like the finger to pinkie rule for the spray pattern and distance. Minnie, good narration job and camera work. I enjoyed watching you bust Pete's balls with the nodding, and back and forth on the camera. I hope Discovery Channel "discovers" you guys.
I think he should have talked about hose diameter 3/8 or 1/4 which he uses and paint viscosity for some one who has painted a lot is okay using a paint paddle . For a beginner they should use a viscosity cup.
Wanna say thanks brother. I watched 20 videos before yours and you by far explained it the best. I shot my camper this week and it was the first time using an HVLP gun and it looks like an amateur did it but lets say it looks like an amateurs 10th time doing it..not their first! Thanks again!
Pete you make it look so easy. I have used a HVLP gun to experiment with painting a bumper, I watched your videos on prepping and painting a bumper and it turned out great. I'm next going to paint a 1971 Opel GT being a small car I hope I'll have less chance to mess it up.
Hi my friend pete, love your work and i have been watching all your you tube videos, I'm from Australia and doing a car from scratch, so keep up the good work your doing and love the way your say it as it is when you explain how to do the job right.
Great job on this video, I learned a lot, Now I'm finally going to break out my HVLP sprayer that I've had for over 20 years and never used, and start practicing. Thanks
keep up the great videos! you have helped me get to the painting stages of my project. i am prepping for paint now and refreshing on your teachings. Thanks man!
Great tips and Thanks Again Pete! Now i know why my primer coat is rough; I was spraying too far away from the panels. And, I didn't have a gauge on the gun! I'm glad I saw this before I got to the painting stage of my project a few weeks from now hopefully.
Man this is the first time I watched your videos but I gotta say I love you guys! I learned more from you than anyone else really! Thank you so much for your videos they are great!
Great video guys ! Always learning. I especially like the part of using the hand spread for gauging distance and pattern.....will have to try that. Thanks for your efforts !!!!
$25 1.4 gun is what I used for the paint 50/50 metallic on my boot lid and a $50 2.0 gun for the 2K clear 2:1 with fast hardener and a splash or reducer..Both HVLP...Result was pretty good considering it was my first real try at it...One guess where I got the info to pull it off....Yep...SWRNC and DIY Autoschool...I found 22-28 lbs worked for me in the middle of winter..15cels...I'm going to pull the rear door off to repair it this summer so I'll see if there is a difference when it comes to paint time...35cels or hotter...I may use no hardener or slow when the time comes..And yes Minnie did a great job with the commentary.
Thanks again Pete for the important lesson you taught this video. I have used a ”JG7” gun for ever. A “HVLP” gun has it’s place and if that is what you use, fine. Remember, their are generations born and no nothing but fuel injection. Give them a carburetor or 2-Stroke fuel pump and they have no clue how they work. Much less a 4-gas analyzer and know what they are seeing. Thanks Pete!
Devilbiss Starting Line... Not a bad set for the DIY guy or maybe and apprentice, but not built for longevity... I still use my old Devilbiss GTI and it still preforms well after years of use... Love your vids! Been watching for ever...
cool stuff I like this guy he doesn't cut corners does absolutely awesome work goes the extra mile and has a great name for himself I'm in the flooring business and do the exact same so many hacks out there good quality work few and far between redoing an 87 mustang so watching alot of videos this shit is gold! rock on Pete cheers from Canada
I got the same set of guns, not bad for $150-180 range...I use the little touch up one for spot repairs, works great. I use the big one for 2k primers with the large tip, it also works great...Keep em clean and lubed, I use Sata gun grease for the moving parts, keeps triggers from sticking...
Wish I could've watched this video before I tried to paint my truck a few years ago with my new HVLP gun. It's perfectly clear to me where I f'ed up my gun's adjustments now.
And thank you minnie the body shop girl for asking the right questions to pete ,' to spit out the right answers to mixing paint,' and getting the right volume on mixing the paint.
Great Video!! A couple of things though. Atomization is what the gun does to break the liquid paint into micro sized drops that you spray onto the surface. I think what you were talking about was flow out, where after the paint is on the car, it flows out creating a more glassy surface. I use a viscosity cup to measure the paint before I spray it, that way, the viscosity is the same no matter what the temperature is. Having too thick a viscosity will give you orange peel (because the drops you are spraying are heavy and when they hit your already applied paint, it makes craters and never flows out consistantly), too thin, you get runs galore, just right gives you an even coat. I don't have an HVLP gun. I have an old Sharp gun for primers, I have a Binks No. 7 for single stage paint, and I use a DeVilbiss BBR for urethane basecoats and clear coat. Your explanation for the set up is the same for any gun (HVLP or regular). I think the biggest difference between gun quality is the evenness if the fan and the atomization. I can get a good spray job with a spray can, the key is the overlap. I have had a few guns that spray lopsided, tossed them. My BBR will spray glass without needing color sanding, unless dust or bugs get in it.
garry7263 when he says "automize" he doesn't mean atomize I don't think. When he says "automize" I think he's using a custom vernacular term that encompasses coalescence and to some degree, finish leveling of the properly thinned finish on the wet painted surface.
It's your friend paul from Canada !!!! Hello again to Pete and Minnie.....nice to see people that get it!!! Pete and Minnie entertain and share their world..... Pete I have watched all his videos 2-10 x over!!! This video confirms that if u follow Pete and his thorough videos. Ie. Big paws red chevelle , this blue beauty and his rustang " anthology". Lol, there is simply no better guide, or means of learning Petes the man. I have a buddy who is a top finisher locally in delta bc Canada where we live, and he knows all the tricks and worked in body shop for 10 years etc etc and bottom line is he doesn't cut corners and he respects paint and supplies and conditions and so f- en forth ..... It's uncanny how my friend showed me over and over to set up gun myself , the paint running of stick ..... Nice clean bench!!! Notice Pete has a clean piece of paper on the bench..... I can tell u once I started doing that I felt professional and it REMINDS u, why not be hospital clean when u are painting a car. Every step taken is less Trash in paint!!!! Pete once again I can't tell u and the followers enough, and hopefully "I" motivate one new person old or young to say " I can do it". Or maybe someone u know is doing it and u can join or help them save a classic car and change or improve your life!!! I Love My Friend Pete and of course Minnie too, she really is special and reminds me of my wife, cool, non prissy but respectfully hot , smart, great devils advocate, confidence to be independent , funny and grounded and most of all in my opinion as a huge compliment to Pete, Minnie clearly gets that Pete owns himself and he appreciates her like only a good man in love can know!! ..... There simply could be no greener grass for those two . Pete works his ass off but I believe their way of life is still living the dream so thanks again you 2 and all the best to your family and all the military people !!! CHECK out petes older vids of visiting his son and the " wedding". Pete is a gem and shows his pride, and knows when to be serious but most of all he is seriously funny and brilliant and connecting with outside box thinkers who I believe are the creative types drawn to restoring cats etc. It's art !!! It's passion. .... It's skill .... It's. A lot of little pieces and Pete covers it all Including Great life lessons. Even if your young kids watch. Hell every kid by 5 these days know adults can swear and they can't , until they " like Pete" can own themselves to say " What The Fuck " ....... Ps. Anyone who says I talked to long " fuck off !" U don't have read lol.... If anyone liked my drift and feels my energy reply :) and also share thumbs up and love to Pete!!! He never says. Hey click the link or give us a thumbs up!!!!! Why , He does vids for his joy and the results follow by his generic effort since 2004 I believe of making vids !!! Pete even has a lesson where he shares his camera tricks etc.... Everyone learn one lesson from your friend paul, it's never too late, u can start over, u can try again, u can make boo boos. Just seek the truth and do your best to do it right and support your family first then neighbours and community and follow petes lead on getting back to supporting the little guy and screw the big man and companies!!! The End lol..... Pete I am starting today " literally " my first paying customer to paint a little rice burner 95 civic ..... And please people I say rice burner affectionately, I live amongst a huge Asian community like Pete does with Latinos and Pete banters with all shapes colors and sizes, we are all one !!!! I'm half Dutch , " wooden head , wooden shoes, Wooden listen !!!! But since I started watching Pete over a year ago, I've come from being depressed and a bit lost at 49 years young to having a working shop and 3 good classic rollers lined up to restore and I've flipped 4 cats in the process in partnership with a neighbor who scraps cars. Relationships are key to leverage production anfliw and opportunities!!!!! Look at Pete , he has special cats and people shipping their car to him cause he is like a friend and neighbor via his vids!!!! Yikes ..... Ok .... The end
What an excellent and informative video! I watch all your vids and want to thankyou for sharing the trade secrets to us so that we can have a try in our home shops. I have just purchased a big project and will no doubt be asking you some questions along the way although you videos to date have provided a lot of encouragement to for me to even take this project on. Anyway, thanks very much Pete for doing this and keep going !
AMEN. ..... Me three :) Great to see so many people compelled to reply. Pete personally replied to me in past and literally called me back !! On my phone, who does that! I reached out and Pete stepped .... I've done same in mentoring others in my business, but everyone needs support or a good perspective and petes the man !! He compassionately says " no matter what, get off your ass" and it's been life changing for me at 49 to shift my career to my passion to restore cars .....
I know it's a conflict with getting real time comments but Minnie you need a respirator eye protection too, You guys are nice folks & we want you to be around for a long time! Another good job you two!
I second the motion lol..... They are a great couple and are everything u can wanna be individually , cool, smart, real, bad ass and nothin but class!!
I get a fucking great laugh out of listening to this DYI automotive painting teacher give lessons on the trade ...u get it straight nothing watered down period...love the content and videos you do brother.
Love your work I'm about to paint my car I have only painted one other truck back about 20years ago and i thought i fucked it up but i just had Orange Peel in the clear coat that's when I was a teenager and I did a good job then so I'm hoping I can do it again watching your videos helping a lot thanks
These videos are very informative. Possibly the most informative on youtube. Your cast of characters including yourself are also top notch. If you simply added a high production value to these you would triple your revenue. Just like painting, filming has a fuckload of tiny factors than can add up or even just one which can ruin a video. Focus, framing, light and sound jump out right off the bat. Sound can be fixed by using a shotgun mic. Understanding how it works via the levels in your camera and distance performance is pretty easy. Next, focus. Are you cleaning your lenses? Are you using a decent dslr camera? Good cameras can be had for as little as 150 bucks used. D3100 and d3200 Nikon's are cheap right now. I shoot canon as once you pic a brand you are married to those lens mounts. Next framing, using a wide angle lenses such as a 10mm will open up a small space. Having your kit lens at its widest will also open up the frame. Then using a shoulder mount or steadicam gimbal along with tripod will dial back on the camera movement. Never use crap stabilizers in post production. And last light. Making sure your camera is set to manual and your big 3 settings are allowing the most light in while keeping the iso as low as possible. Next go buy some cheap t12 fixtures. Like 4 to start and get them set up to light up where you are shooting. Make sure you get white light color cast bulbs as they wont turn your footage blue, red or yellow. If you spend a few bucks and understand how to raise your production value this channel will be awesome. Since you are showing us amazing paint jobs you want us to be able to see how amazing they are with good quality videos. Bonus tip. Set up your shop so there is more space in the aisle areas that are conducive to having someone film using lights and tripods. Its impossible to get good footage if you cant step back and get a good shot without tripping and bumping into stuff. Cant wait to paint using your tips. Maybe take some of these that I offer and hit me up if you have any questions
Thanks very much for doing these no cut and wack video's, I get a lot of my questions answered since you don't hide the reality of the situation just so you can look to good. Damn, my hands get sore thinking about all that sanding and fingering that trigger. awesome video Sailor!
Thank you man. You’ve helped me a lot on the bondo and paint situation. Not just this video. I’ve followed this whole section and started watching more once I hit the bondo stage of my car Just got fear struck and your helping me and a lot of others get past that I bet

When the camera started moving to follow your hand, comedy gold!
Brilliant. I had a real good laugh at that.
Thanks for the upload.

Lots of people have knowledge, but this guy has _wisdom_
I have to say, that your language is enough to make a sailor blush, but your work ethic and quality of your work is just incredible.
Yeah but he is a Sailor. Hahaha
Thanks Minnie for asking all the questions. Good stuff to know.
Minnie does a great job of narrating. You should let her do that more often.
She supposed to read his reducer saturated mind.
Great video!! My husband left me a paint sprayer when he passed. I'm going to try this myself. Thank you so much for explaining this whole process!
Pure entertainment. Love this guy. Straight to the point, no bullshit. Proper old school.
Hello Pete and Minny. Thank you very much for this series of videos. I have a 1966 Mustang and want to do the job right ! This series has been a real help in learning how to do the job right.

Awesome technical video, great job explaining the procedure Pete. Minnie did an awesome job also. You two played pretty much nice this go round! haha
I'm half Dutch , " wooden head , wooden shoes,
Wooden listen !!!!
Yikes ..... Ok .... The end
I have to admit, this guy might be a grumpy wise ass, but he sure can handle a gun! Lots of knowledge too, thank you for doing what you do
What an excellent and informative video!
Great video Pete. You motivate me to get out there and get some work done. Also shop more a harbor freight. Thanks.

Thank you for taking the time to explain the situation in detail, very helpful video.
love this guy he's not fake
Great videos in general Pete. This one was very helpful for me......
Thx really enjoying this series of videos Pete.
Thanks very much for doing these no cut and wack video's, I get a lot of my questions answered since you don't hide the reality of the situation just so you can look to good.
