In the new book about the ''Faith'' era (written by Matthew Horton), Chris Cameron (who he played the keyboard in this song and in few tracks of that album) talk about how the song was written in studios. George working from a another song of the album this day in the studios and it's wasn't well this day. When george take a break this day, George and Chris heard few 70's souls songs and George have a idea for a song when he heard a soul song with organ like you hear in the final product. Chris recording a demo of the organ for george and starting to write while he listen the demo. Only eight hours later, he write the lyrics of ''One More Try'' and he asked his musicians to came in the studios to recording this song. When the instrumentation was recording, after the instrumentals was finished, he recording his voice in one take. The instrumentals was also in one take and he wanted to keep this song very minimalist and simple in the arrangements. It's a one take song and this is what you heard in the final product, in the album and the video. While in the others he take many months to write a song (for example, he write the essence of ''Kissing a Fool'' in japan in 1984, but finished to written the song during the sessions of the album), ''One more Try'' was very fast and easy to write for him compared to the others songs of the album.

I love Last Christmas my favorite Wham song. This is my favorite George Michael song. Teacher was someone that he loved and told him goodbye. He sings about being tired of strangers & people off the streets (one night stands). He is apprehensive about his current love working because past loves hurt him.

I’ve been DYING to see your reaction to this and you did not disappoint! ❤️ This is one of my favorite songs of all time. The “teacher” is a metaphor for a more experienced (and yes probably older) lover. The sparseness of the video matches the minimalist arrangement of the song so you can focus on the emotion on his gorgeous face and in his beautiful voice. BTW you sounded good singing that lyric! 😉

People probably don't remember this one as much as they do other George or Wham songs, but this DID go to #1 in 1988 for 3 weeks. It was the 4th single from the album Faith. I Want Your Sex was the first (#2), then Faith (classic, #1 for 4 weeks), then Father Figure (#1 for 2 weeks), and then this one. I actually don't remember this one as much as a kid, but it's great. He followed it with the awesome Monkey (his other forgotten #1 hit) and the jazz ballad Kissing A Fool (#5). He was so untouchable then!

In the 80s, he was definitely part of what I call the "Fantastic Four of Pop". Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince and George Michael. These four not only had enormous commercial success, but were also creatively on another level and thus had a great influence on subsequent generations and I dare say that the pop music scene will probably never see such mega stars again.

This song cibled more the adult public to the three first singles of the ''Faith'' album and was a intense ballad. Wait unti you heard ''Father Figure'' (My favorite song of the ''Faith'' album), you are hypnotised by her strange mood and her sensual vibe and vocal also.
THis song was the fourth single of the album and the third n.1 single in US of the ''Faith'' album. Because after he released the sexual funky ''I Want Your Sex'', the rock influenced ''Faith'' and the sensual ballad ''Father Figure'', this balad was a welcome peace for the radios for soul and pop music and attires more adult public to the three first singles.

I believe you asked this question in a previous George Michael you posted that I watched back to back this morning. Anyway, I'm sure you remember asking even if I posted under a different video. QUESTION: Why the loss of accents when singing: In a nutshell, it has a lot to do with phonetics, the pace at which they sing and speak, and the air pressure from one’s vocal chords. I often wondered why then does it end up sounding very "American". It’s simply because the generic “American” accent is fairly neutral. Even American singers, if they have, for instance, a strong “New Yorker” or perhaps a “Hillbilly” accent, will also tend to lose their specific accent, gravitating more towards neutral English, unless they are actively trying not to, as many country singers might.

Oh Empress... THANK YOU for this! This was my first Patreon pick and I am honored and overjoyed with the reaction! And so happy to be an official Empressionist! 🥰 While I love so many songs and artists for many different reasons, there are only a handful that stop me in me my tracks when I hear it, no matter where I'm at or what I'm doing. "One More Try" is one of those. I could hear it once in a day or one hundred times in a day and it would never get old. I was 13 years old when I first heard this song and it did something to me. When you're 13, you're in the midst of letting childhood interests go while collecting new interests that you may not even understand at the time. This was one of those songs that made me PAY ATTENTION. And I know you understand what I mean. His conviction as he delivers these lyrics with That. Voice. 🙌
I've inquired much research and have watched every vintage GM interview you could think of, and I have yet to find anything that confirms who this song is about, specifically. Who is "the teacher?" I can only echo the speculation of many fellow GM fans that this song was written to a prospective love interest that wanted to "teach" him things that he is not "willing to try." On the surface, this may appear to be sexual, though I interpret it as to be profoundly spiritual. Keep in mind he was still closeted and in a relationship with a woman during this "Faith" era, and in his later years had revealed that he had already been in love with a man years before "Faith." One More Try to fully realize his true self was his conclusion, thus sung as the final line of the song. Epic, timeless, and brilliant... While looking amazing in a suit, I agree. 😉 ❤

Teacher refers to the person that came into his life and taught him things about himself . This song is heart breaking, because this person really taught him how to love, but he was afraid to be vulnerable and give his heart for fear of being hurt. :(. George was a soul signer. He wrote and produced all of his music!

"He looks good in a suit." George *hated* the leather-jacket "bad boy" look, and he deeply resented the record company for forcing him to go with that look.
Later on when he got a new contract, the first music video he did ("Freedom '90") showed the jacket burning in a fire. And he didn't appear in the video at all...he was sick of his career being about his image rather than his performance.
"Freedom' 90" is my favorite George Michael song, but "One More Try" is my favorite ballad of his. So much feeling in this one.

He writing, recording and mixing this song in only eight hours and this was recording only in one take (instruments and voice). Crazy how so much fast this song was conceived.

I think I was probably one of the little kids in the back seat singing along. Looking back, it's not my favorite GM song ("Father Figure" is still my favorite from this album - talk about not knowing what you're singing along to as a kid haha). GM was very influenced by Motown and soul music in general. "Kissing a Fool" is even more retro and was apparently a big hit as well but I oddly don't remember hearing it on the radio at the time, only on my cassette tape which I played incessantly. Anyone here remember hearing "Kissing a Fool" on the radio?
