In 1999, George Michael and Mary J. Blige covered the song for Michael's greatest hits album Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best of George Michael (1998). Released outside the United States on March 1, 1999, as the second single from the album, "As" became a top-10 hit in Michael's home country, reaching number four on the UK Singles Chart, and also charted within the top 10 in Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain.
"As" was not released on the US version of Ladies & Gentlemen or as a single in the US. Michael cited Blige's record company president, Jay Boberg, for pulling the track after Michael's arrest for committing a lewd act in a public restroom.[4] In 2019, Kirk Burrowes, who executive produced Blige's fourth album Mary, told Rated R&B that it was indeed Boberg's decision not to release "As" in the US: "[Boberg] did not want to let George Michael, who initiated that original production, use it as a single in the U.S. to launch his greatest hits album. It pissed everyone off at Sony. It pissed George Michael off. It pissed everyone off, but we couldn't make Jay Boberg bend. He should have put it on the Mary album, but we couldn't put it on the album in the states because he wouldn't let George Michael put it on the Ladies & Gentlemen [album] in the states."[5 - เพลง
Man, who do you know today that could cover Stevie, Freddie, Marvin Gaye, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, and do them justice? I can't think of anyone. Who do you know that could collab with Mary J, Whitney, Aretha, Elton, and make sound so good? On top of all of that have his own catalog of great music. George was one of a kind and underrated. @@bk4062 Yes, BK I do. I agree there is no one like him and never will be. Sometimes I think he never got over losing Anselmo and his mother, the 2 people he loved most in the world. I think he tried to move on but just couldn't replicate those relationships. Even though I miss him I hope he is with them now. I know that would make him happy. I am grateful for what he left us. I just wish more people appreciated his talent. He is so much more than Wake Me Up Before You Go Go and Careless Whisper. I know reactors probably get tired of my requests for his songs but, oh well. The younger generation deserves to know him!
He wasn't underrated when he was alive. Glad you all are discovering his talent

💖 Stevie has never written a dud melody in his life, and this one is so smooth and soulful. A classic classy cover that still gets played on radio and in supermarkets.

this collab was just a rumor in the states as Mary's record label did not allow George to add it to the American release of his album. They sited contractual concerns but he had come out that year so it was a bit suspect that only Europeans got to hear the album version with this song. (This was before the internet, of course)
What a shame. It's annoying how his career died in the US after him coming out.

They liked the money too much, When George wouldn't play their game, they were going to destroy him. That's why the court case with sony. He didn't give a Damn about the money he lost, just that It was a big waste of time. Well, who came out on top. The good guys do win in the end. However, there were many other media Suits, constantly causing Shit, for the money. Boy, when that money bites, It's relentless, YA! You probably know this already but, listen to STAR PEOPLE, & FAST LOVE ( the headphones that say PONY INSTEAD OF SONY! George wasn't vindictive but there were a few messages, in a conning way! The song was originally going to be Lauryn Hill and George Michael but, Lauryn had just had a baby so he decided on Mary either way the song would have been bomb

This song was not in the american released of the ''Mary'' album neither the north American released of the greatest hits of George (but included everywhere). The label of Mary Blige, MCA Records, refused to included this song in the american released because of the bathroom scandal of George. THe song was huge in 1999 in the rest of the world when it's came out in single outside the US. SOny (who released the greatest hits of George, dep) battled with the president of MCA Records to included the song in the US released of his first greatest Hits (the album who ending the contract of Sony after George quit Sony in 1995 after George lost the lawsuit), but the boss of MCA didn't wanted anything about and Sony decided to not made the oil of the rage. George himself condamning the boss of MMCA Records because of his unrespected for his work with Mary J. Blige In US. But later, this song was included in his second Greatest hits (Twenty-Five) american released.

This version never did it for me. I dislike the Babyface production here, odd because I usually like his stuff and I feel the same about George’s vocals here. I agree with most critics at the time, that this was playing it safe for him. Coasting. It never got a chance to flop here tho because Marys Recording co refused to release it after his arrest.
