i didn't see this as a kid. we didn't have that fancy cable plan with much music until the nineties.
but madonna totally played a role in me smoking cigarettes. the "justify my love" cd single cover. the "bad girl" cd single cover. she just made it look so glamorous, and i wanted to be glamorous too... turns out smoking ain't that glamorous.

Yeah this is really my era, I was 4 but I remember Madonna, Michael, Whitney, George, Janet, New Kids On The Block, Paula, and Jodi Watley being huge larger than life. Even Kylie and Selena ( the real one not that disney chick) were making noise in other countries and you only knew because MTV was playing Euro dance music at 12 am and I only knew because I was sneaking around at that time watching TV because my mom was fast asleep. I remember my watching this for the first time with my mom and she was annoyed by Madonna but respected her hustle.

Madonna 83 vocals to Madonna’s Oscar 91 vocals are a huge change and that would only further change in 96 with vocal training from Evita . 90s Madonna is my absolute fav…starting with Vogue and Justify My Love the songs, Blond Ambition tour then Erotica, Bedtime Stories and Ray of Light all masterpiece albums you are about to start the best of the best.
Also want to point out this era is the true start of Madonna the gay icon/advocate. Like a Prayer had facts about HIV prevention. She was taking part in AIDS charity events and became the most prolific ally of the LGBT community. Keep in mind Elton and George were still closeted at this point. And she was demonized by the evangelical right….more to come in the 90s

Theses songs you hear in extract it's ''Father Figure'' (4:28, then you react recently), ''Kissing a Fool'' (4:46), ''Hard Day'' (5:10), ''Faith'' (5:29) and ''Monkey'' (6:05). The last was the remix by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (for the single version of this song) and not the album version (the album version became more funky to the single version). All the songs of the ''Faith'' album. A another song of the ''Faith'' album, ''Hand to Mouth'' (but you not heard) was mentionned by Madonna during his presentation to George. A masterpiece the album and was timeless.
Wow! This definitely take me back to those days watching the VMAs. I thought it was amazing seeing Madonna presenting the Video Vanguard Award to George Michael. But I was disappointed that they (meaning MTV) didn't mentioned his days of Wham! before he released his Faith album. But other than that, amazing reaction homie and congrats on hitting 7K subs.

This was the Video Vanguard Award, MTV's highest honor (Madonna won in 1986, Michael Jackson in 1988). In 1991, MTV changed the name to the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award....allegedly in an attempt to appease MJ who was supposedly upset that MTV had named Madonna "Artist of the Decade".
Madonna will make reference to this on the occasion of MTV's 10th anniversary in 1991.

The first time I saw this, I just managed to press record on my video recorder real quick. Watched it back loads and as usual copied everything she did. Me and my friends were always so obsessed with how ballsy she was and her FU attitude. You just couldn’t wait to see what she’d do next. Then came I’m Breathless & The Blond Ambition Tour… 1990 Madonna ruled the world!! (Watch the way Donna is “Smoking” in the background, Relatable!!) 💙

'Sooner or later' is from the 'I'm breathless' album, so that is the next one to react to, before she goes on tour. I wouldn't mind you react to it again, you see her evolution and maybe even understand better how she got there. Maybe first listen to 'I'm Breathless' and the actual song from the album, then the performance in Dick Tracy. (She sings some of the songs live in the movie, which is actually great). We had a lot of Madonna in 1990, she was a sensation, all the news was about her, at least in my life. I think that year she became the legendary Icon we all know now.

The ''Faith'' album was the first album of history to produced six top 5 singles in a same album of the Billboard Hot 100 aside to produced four n.1 singles in this same chart. Also, ''Kissing a Fool'' was since his released a iconic song for a jazz song.

2. Faith: n.1 for four weeks in december 1987 (aside of the best selling song of 1988)

M was hilarious… he does great videos… like ME… he’s avant garde… like ME. Too funny. Yes, GM was a total vintage snack. He had a lot of demons though and by the end of his life he was completely unrecognizable… it was so sad. I think M’s finger snap and Diva comment were subtle shade or at least a hint that she knew what was up with his sexuality. She clearly loved him and wouldn’t have meant anything by it… I think it was just a little inside joke.

As well as losing Video Of The Year to This Note's For You, which no shade, i have never heard of and no one seems to remember lol They did the same in 1989 that they did in 1984 when Michael's Thriller did not win Video Of The Year. At least the public voted Like A Prayer as their favorite video of 1989 though :) Express Yourself won 3 Awards that night as well.

Thriller is like the biggest most famous video and MTV did not give it Video Of The Year, just like they did not choose Like A Prayer or Vogue! for that award either. Excited to see your reaction. I have never heard the song or seen the video they picked for Video of The Year 1989. In 1984 they pciked The Cars with You Might Think which i don't know/ remember either over Thriller. Cyndi Laupers Girls Just Wanna Have Fun was up as well which is not quite as iconic as Thriller obviously imo but at least way more remembered than The Cars video. Going through the winners of Video OF The Year of the 1980s it becomes apparent that they ALL fit the white male rock category. Not a single female artist or POC winning...just saying -.-
Michael just like Madonna won Viewers Choice though thankfully so the public knew which videos would become iconic when MTV did not. HA! ;)
@@Marc-zi5cq probably record company interference. They didn't know what to do with their rock acts who were not video friendly and music was changing. So the innovative video artists were not rewarded but their legacy is still huge.
I do think even if it is a compilation you should repeat to the videos you've already reviewed in context with what you know about her career now.
Also, I believe George said that he wasn't offended by what she said because he was out to friends and not to the public so he brushed it off. Their body language here shows he was ok with it.
Also, he has some great songs like Father Figure, Faith, Monkey. But his best work to me is the Listen Without Predjudice album.

Empress, although it's short, I hope you'll watch or react to Madonna's acceptance speech for the MTV Artist of the Decade award in 1989. It was filmed in December of 1989, shortly after the "Oh Father" video and before "Keep It Together" was released as a single (in January, 1990).
(P.S. She was a dark brunette again for a minute, when the "Keep It Together" single cover was photographed; no videos though.)

I haven't watched the VMA's in at least 10 years. I refuse to now. But the last time I did they had stopped doing the video montage for the Video Vanguard recipients and instead were just having them perform and giving them the award after it was over. So boring. The montage segment was much better. They should bring that aspect back.
Only 10 years? I haven't watched any of these award shows for like 20 years. Just a reflection of the type of garbage mainsteam music that's been around since the turn of the century.

I would def like to see you react to your reactions of "Vogue" and the "Sooner or Later" performance again when we get to them. Madonna has used a cigarette as a prop many times. Madonna rarely shows this much love for another performer... you can tell she really likes him and respects him. It's such a shame they never collaborated.
