    ____
"Kissing a Fool" is a song written and performed by George Michael and released by Columbia Records in 1988.
A ballad with minimal instrumentation and a jazz feel, the song was written about Michael's insecurities as a soulmate and partner because of the baggage and reputation with which he came. According to Michael, the vocals were recorded in a cappella in one take. "Kissing a Fool" was the working-title for the album, which later was renamed to Faith.
Aside from Michael's vocals, the song employs piano, guitar, bass, drums, and a brass section. It was the seventh and final single to be released from the album Faith. It was also the least successful, making number 18 on the UK Singles Chart and becoming the first single in five not to make number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. However, it reached number one on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks and became a number 5 hit on the Billboard Hot 100,[2] remaining a fan favourite and being regarded critically as one of his most accessible and honest recordings.[citation needed]
"Kissing a Fool" was Michael's last single for almost two years in the United Kingdom. It was later covered by Michael Bublé on his self-titled album and released as a single in the United States and reached number 29 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

Gorgeous song. When I was a kid, circa 1988, this was my mother's favorite George song, and I didn't get it. As an adult, I absolutely love it.

Fun Fact about this song. George write this song in 1984 during his years of Wham. He write most of this song during theses years, but stopped and never used, because he think it's didn't fit with the lighthing image of Wham. After Wham ending in 1986, when he starting to recording ''Faith'', he return with how he started with this song to finish to writing this song. He recording the vocals in one take and wanted to sound raw in his vocals. He cited this song has his most personal song of the ''Faith'' album (with ''One more Try'').
This song was not only the last single of the ''Faith'' album, but also the ending track of the ''Faith'' album. It's a perfect single to ending the era and also a perfect track to ending the album. This song was the jazzy moment of the ''Faith'' album. The single did very well when it's was released in single, hugely success in adult contempory format. In US, ''Kissing a Fool'' peaked n.1 in Adult contempory format, but it's was also the sixth top 5 single of the ''Faith'' album in the Billboard Hot 100 (reaching n.5 in november 1988), becoming ''Faith'' the first album of history to produced six top 5 singles in US.
And yes, it's sound very 40's and 50's like Sinatra or Brenda Lee in this song and this song sound timeless many years later.
Because this song was so personal, he didn't sing this song live until 2006 who he started to singing live. He cited to this song was relevant for his life to when he wriiting and recording this song. His live version in his last years of his life was so beautiful and so much raw and touching.
Michael Buble covered this song in his first album, because he loved this song since very young.

One of my fav George Michael songs. Damn he could write. Deon Estes playing the stand up instrument with the dread locks was with Wham. He stayed with George for so long too. I don’t know what that instrument is called. I always called him the third Wham member. He passed away a few months ago. George wrote Deon a great song called “heaven help me”. It’s great. George sang background vocals on it.

....Let's show Miss Empress the scope of how HUGE the "Faith" era was, for Georgie Boy, Kids...this, was the DAMAGE he created, at the time....starting, Summer 1987...(cont.)
"I Want Your Sex / Hard Day" - ...used in the HUGE summer flick "Beverly Hills Cop 2", the VERY controversial tune created a line as to what can be said on the Radio, and how it could be presented...a MASSIVE crossover hit, on the Pop (#2), Soul, & Dance charts...
"Faith" (Nov. 1987) - ...THE #1 Song of 1988, a HUGE, HUGE hit, with a much parodied Video, created the template of George's ICONIC look, and changed the game of 'Metrosexuality', in Men...
"Father Figure" (Mar. 1988) - ...UH-OH, Black People jump on board! ..ha-HAA!! ...a HUGE R&B hit, and of course, Pop (#1); White (AND Black) People RAN to the Record Stores to buy the LP, with 4 hits, by now.....
"One More Try" (June 1988) - ...ba-BOOM!! ...#1 Soul, #1 Pop, #1 AC, a WORLDWIDE smash.... and, the cherry on top..Georgie becomes the FIRST White Male to have a #1 R&B Album, on the Billboard chart!!
"Monkey" (Sept. 1988) - ...Georgie gets FUNKAY, and hires Janet's producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis to remix this tune, and ba-BOOM, AGAIN! ...#1 Pop, Top 10 R&B, #1 Dance....and, "Hard Day" gets remixed by Shep Pettibone, and hits #1 on the Club charts, on it's OWN!
"Kissing A Fool" (Nov. 1988) - ...Georgie cools it down....but the sales of the "Faith" LP, are still heating UP! ..The last single from the LP goes Top 5 Pop, #1 AC, and George goes on a SELLOUT World Tour!!
...I have ALL the singles, the CD's, the Posters, the Tour Programs, the Magazines....DAMN, did you Kids MISS it! ...ha-HAAAA!!

I agree, BUT black people didn't just jump aboard. George had a soul voice and soul tinged songs. Black people had been there. Faith moved more to the r&b side from the pop of Wham. So of course it would appeal move to black radio.

    • @RBS_
      @RBS_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@darnell49 ....SEE, I KNEW that phrase would come out wrong! ...I meant Blacks were READY to 'buy' George, his SINGLES did well in the R&B market ("Everything She Wants" was a HUGE R&B hit), and George's Apollo performances solidified that....
...but, 'Father Figure' got them to BUY the "Faith" LP...believe me, me & Cedric the Entertainer had a huge argument over that one! ...ha-HAAA!!

🎙💋 This is from Faith, the same album as I Want Your Sex, Faith, Father Figure, One More Try and Monkey. You can tell the Faith songs in videos because he’s wearing the iconic cross earring he only wore for that album. He looks so damn hot in this video.
And the song is soooo smooth, that reverb echo on his voice makes it feel almost like a memory of a song. The clever flip of the title too. We expect it to be a song about him feeling his lover has been foolish, but he flips it to say they must have been kissing a fool when they kissed him. I’ve always thought this song might be a little coded. George had dated women as a closeted bi/gay man, and that line about how the lover “listened to people who scared you to death…” It could be about the challenge for people being with him in the bubble of his fame, but it sounds like an allusion to a a situation with a girl who had heard he was gay and questioned their love. I’m obviously reading into it, but as much as George was brilliant at writing pure pop, he always wrote from the heart too.

Do you realized how the ''Faith'' album was so huge and how this album was so iconic and excellent. in the Rolling Stone magazine of 2020, the ''Faith'' album was listed in the list of the 500 best albums of all time in the industry of music.
Six of the nine songs of the album was released in single and all was successful. The tracklisting of the ''Faith'' album (his debut solo album): 1. Faith / 2. Father Figure / 3. I Want Your Sex (part 1 and 2) / 4. One more Try / 5. Hard Day / 6. Hand to Mouth / 7. Look At Your Hands / 8. Monkey / 9. Kissing a Fool
I didn't count the part 3 of ''I Want Your Sex''' because it's was a bonus track of the cassette and CD when it's came out (in october 1987) and the vinyl not included this part of this song.
I suggest for the George ''Hard Day'', my favorite non single of the ''Faith'' album. This song was very funky and catchy and so good. You hear a extract in this song when you react for Madonna to presenting George in the MTV in 1989 (the line ''Don't Bring me Down'' was this song)
