Dell U3415W vs U3417W Ultrawide Monitor Comparison - Best Productivity Ultrawide?

  • I think the Dell U3415 is still one of the best ultrawide monitors today for productivity purposes but I was curious to see how it compares with the newer U3417 and if it was worth the price premium. The quick answer: I'd probably stick to the older version given the price discount but there are some minor reasons that some people might want to opt for the newer model.

    Thank you for your clear and to-the-point video. You helped me decide on getting the 15 since the main differences are cosmetic. I just received the monitor in the mail yesterday and I'm super happy with how it looks, thanks for helping me save a few bucks! I also prefer the curve to be less pronounced since I do some Lightroom work every now and then.

    Thanks for the excellent review it totally steered me back to the older monitor. My Dell U3415W arrived today and just got it setup. Will primarily be using it for business productivity purposes. So much screen real estate, I am a little giddy. Any tips for me to do some additional tweaks to the settings where I will notice a difference?

    I initially bought the U3415W mostly to save some money, and was reluctant to go with the higher curvature of the 3417. After using the 3415 for a week I discovered all the extra features the 3417 had under the hood over the 3415 that might not have been mentioned in this video. I saw these features in the menu of a review for the 3417 that are not present in the 3415:
    Extra options of the 3417 (to my knowledge):
    * it looks like you can switch between two HDMI inputs, whereas the 3415 has to switch between an HDMI and display port
    * inputs have auto-select
    * you can set the time in in which the monitor will go to sleep, which you cant with the 3415
    * you can use keyboard shortcuts to KVM switch between two computers, the 3415 has to be switched via the buttons on the front
    * you can set how long the menu will stay on before it turns itself off (on the 3415 I have to back out of the menu to get rid of it)
    * picture in picture options have small and large options
    * buttons on the 3417 are tactile, the buttons on the 3415 are electrostatic and are hard to find in low light
    * LED is under the monitor which can be less distracting, there is also the option to turn it off
    * a shortcut can be set to toggle between two machines (primary and secondary)
    * the 3417 can have 4 useful input sources while the 3415 has 3 plus MHL which most of use probably woudn't use
    When I get my 3417 in a week or so I'll be able to confirm these points.

    Thanks for much for this comparison. Well presented. I bought the older U3415W (October 2018) because of the price and like it very much, but was wondering if the U3417W might be worth paying extra for. You've persuaded me that for me personally at least the 3415 is fine and I probably wouldn't notice the differences. (I also bought the 38" display but it doesn't look any better to my eyes than the 34" display and I've decided for myself anyway that the 38" is TOO wide and 34" is just about perfect. I'm a developer, not a gamer.)

    So just a refinement for a price bump? It'd be impressive if Dell could bring infinity edge displays to their ultrawide line. That would look killer!

    • @HelloDavid
      @HelloDavid  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's getting pretty close! the U3417 has about 11mm borders, infinity edge on some of their displays is about 8mm?? Would definitely be nice but I think most people are waiting for HDR, OLED, 1440@144Hz panels as the next big thing. Until then these older ultrawides will have to do.

    Great video.
    How would you compare the HP Envy 34 ultrawide versus the Dell u3417w? (With regards to quality of display picture).
    I use my computer for work - reading documents, surging the web, etc. Are either of these displays’ pictures superior to the other, or are they relatively equal?
    I recently purchased the HP Envy 34 and the brightness of the screen appeared to be lacking and colors don’t really pop. I used to have a 4k monitor so Im wondering if this is simply the standard quality one can expect from a 1440 ultrawide or whether HP is just inferior in this regard.
    Is it worth returning the HP to get the Dell, or will it not be much of a difference?
    Thank to anyone willing to dispense advice in this regard!

    Hey David! Thx for the Review. As you have obviously tested at least a couple of Dell 34" UWQHD Monitors, could you please let me know about Color uniformity across your screens? I just purchased a Dell U3417W manufactured September 2017. I notice slight color uniformity differences across the panel. This can only be seen on plain White or light Grey plane color surfaces. The left part of the Screen seems to have a slightly more Magenta look and the absolute center of the screen seems to have a slightly colder bluish area. The rest of the monitor is uniform. It's not THAT bad - but I do notice it mostly when viewing plane web pages or have grey background software in full-screen. I have also compared the LG 34UC98 right next to the Dell and this one also has some uneven color uniformity. The LG has a slightly Magenta area on the right and slight green on the top left. The panels are the same in these monitors - even though I have to say the Dell seems to be slightly sharper when displaying Text. I prefer the Dell, but would like to know if others are also experiencing slight color differences across the screen. Looking forward to an answer or comments from other Users? Cheers!

    • @damac78
      @damac78 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Couldn’t live with the bad color uniformity. Much too distracting even during daily work and on Webpages. I have moved away from Ultrawide Monitors because both Panel und build quality are just subpar. Even after 3 replacements I can confirm the Dell u3417w st just not worth the money. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find an Ultrawide Monitor without an LG Panel inside. I gave LG one last chance with the 34uc98-w and learned my lesson once again: steer clear from anything made by LG. Especially TV‘s and Monitor-Panels.
      Moving away from Ultrawide gave me a much larger selection of options. Very happy with my decision of two Dell u2717d Monitors. Even more screen real estate than one ultra wide and a very slim infinity edge bezel all around makes them look very nice. The Panel is a SAMSUNG PLS and has beautiful uniformity and contrast.
      To anybody else going through this decision: make sure to stay clear from LG Panels. Aim for Samsung or AUO Panels. Forget VA or TN: PLS (IPS) is the way to go. As for faulty pixels; Dell has a 0-bright pixel warranty on their ultrasharp series. Which is what made me decide to go with them, although the u3417w was terrible in both build quality and color uniformity.

    So I just returned the U3415 and bought the U3417. Although I didn't have the luxury of comparing side by side, I would strongly recommend the U3417. The speakers are much better - I couldn't stand the 3415 speakers so I didn't use them. I like the tactile buttons underneath rather than the electrostatic ones on front of the 3415 as you can actually feel them before pressing. In general I think the picture was better although it's hard to say without them side by side. I thought the extra curve would bother me, but I sit pretty close to it so it wasn't an issue. The bezels are smaller and coming from an LG, the 3415 seemed a little chunky. Overall I really like this monitor and it's great from productivity. If you're gaming, I'd suggest going for something simpler with more gaming features although I have been gaming fine on it.

    You are stating they use the same panel technology and I think this is correct. According to displayspecifications.com, the U3415W has an LG LM340UW2-SSA1 panel, and the U3417W has an LG LM340UW3-SSA1 panel. There is only 1 digit difference, and that digit (2 vs 3) indicates the curve. 1 = flat, 2 = R3800, 3-6 = R1900. The rest of the panel is the same.

    • @HelloDavid
      @HelloDavid  6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Good question! I'm surprised this doesn't get asked more. It's a personal preference. 40" feels too big and can give me headaches with a giant screen burning my eyes all day long. While yes, a 40" 16:9 is just about as wide as a 34" 21:9, the shorter height gives my eyes more breathing room (if that makes any sense) without a huge loss in overall immersion and usable screen space. I could sit further away from a 40" but then it kind of defeats the point of having a large screen.

      I have BOTH on my table right now.. Tough choice!! Two things make the Dell my choice: I noticed the Dell seems to have sharper Text. My eyes don't have to focus as much on small text as they do on the LG (strangely as these models have the exact same LG Panels inside). Also, I prefer the menus and the very handy KV option for attaching 2 separate PC's to the USB-Hub. This is a Dell exclusive for sure. I am not going to be gaming. If I where doing some gaming and had an AMD Graphics-Card, I'd go with the LG cause of the FreeSync option at 75Hz.Another note on LG quality control: I had to send the first LG back due to a dead pixel and bad light bleeding. Second one seems fine, but I still think the Dell has the edge. Let me know if you have any other questions.

      not 60 herz in 2018 guys, go for something higher. I got the u3415w, it's great... but fps games sux:)))

      I don't play games. Ever. So 60Hz is absolutely fine for productivity/working. And if you are a very casual gamer, 60Hz is also fine.

    Are curved screens really worth it? Does it feel more immersive?

    • @HelloDavid
      @HelloDavid  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In my opinion it's not worth a huge price premium. For these large desktop monitor It is nicer to have since it's a little more immersive and improves the viewing angles on the edges but I can easily live without the curve and save some money.

    Lg 34um88 VS Dell U3415W ?
    I need a new monitor for professional use and I end up with these two.
    Now I'm wondering which one would works better for occasional game time.
    LG has free sync but only 60hz
    Dell has no sync but 85hz
    What's best for gaming ?

    • @YourCRTube

      The LG is 75Hz when used under FreeSync. The Dell is 60Hz, looking at the Dell page now.

      but from my understanding you can overclock it to 80-85hz

      This monitor is 60hz. I think that LG might actually be 75hz. Either way, LG would be better for gaming.

    Man I want a curved monitor so bad, but I can't justify the cost of the purchase for a little extra screen real estate. Sticking with my Asus 24" 4K IPS for now until costs come down on these bad boys.

    What about contrast? I heard a lot of negative comments on the newer one

    • @HelloDavid
      @HelloDavid  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not super scientific but with the white brightness level set to approximately the same on both displays, as I showed in the video the IPS glow makes the blacks brighter on the newer one. So overall I assume the contrast is a bit worse on the newer monitor due to the brighter blacks. In practice I don't really see a difference in contrast between the monitors but I am also part of the population that believes out of the box, monitors are set too bright so I lower the brightness on all my displays, which effectively reduces contrast anyways.

      The contrast is fine. About the same as the last model. There are many users out there that got scared off by that stupid false review from Digital Trends. They measured the monitor with uniformity compensation turned on within the menu. This is turned on out of the box and I would recommend disabling it. Takes too much contrast and brightness away from the screen. Check out the new "rtings" review - they did it right! Measured once with this option enabled and once without.

      +Chillhoof NOT to mention that ASUS makes you pay a fortune for freaking TN panels and that "1ms" is BS, most of their monitor models run at between 2-5ms, this is meaningless to the consumer, unless you take into a count they are making you pay even more for that...

      It has KVM switching which I think is great added value - plus the only monitor I've seen that does PiP AND PbP (LGs can do PbP but not PiP).

  • @damac78

    Couldn’t live with the bad color uniformity. Much too distracting even during daily work and on Webpages. I have moved away from Ultrawide Monitors because both Panel und build quality are just subpar. Even after 3 replacements I can confirm the Dell u3417w is just not worth the money. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find an Ultrawide IPS-Type Monitor without an LG Panel inside. I gave LG one last chance with the 34uc98-w and learned my lesson once again: steer clear from anything made by LG. Especially TV‘s and Monitor-Panels!
    Moving away from Ultrawide gave me a much larger selection of options. Very happy with my final decision of two Dell u2717d Monitors.
