    This 1 hour intermediate yoga class will show you 20 ways to use your yoga strap in a yoga class. Yoga props like the yoga strap allow you to receive the benefit of the yoga pose without overextending yourselves, thus experiencing greater ease and stability and more connection with your breath in the pose. And yet, a lot of times people hold back from using props such as yoga straps. Perhaps people feel like they are cheating in their yoga practice if they use a prop. It is important to look at the life connection here, because it may just be that you are less likely to receive support in other areas in your life as well, if you are not willing to take it on your yoga mat. I have found yoga props, such as the yoga strap to be another tool to explore my creative expression as yoga teacher and yoga student. Today you will explore the yoga strap as a tool to soften edges both on and off your yoga mat.
    In this yoga class with a strap you will learn to use the strap in these 20 yoga poses: Supta Padangusthasana/Hand to Big Toe Pose, Setu Bandhasana/Bridge Pose, Uttihita Chaturanga Dandasana/Plank Pose, Ardha Navāsana/Boat Pose, Chest and Shoulder Opener, Prasarita Padottanasana/Wide Legged Standing Forward Fold, Back-pack set up, Trikonasana/Triangle Pose, Natarajasana/Dancer, Hasta Padangustasana/Standing Hand to Big Toe Pose, Vṛkṣāsana/Tree Pose, Parsvakonasana/Side Angle Pose, Sasankasana/Rabbit, Makarasana/Dolphin, Sarvāṅgāsana/Shoulderstand, Bhujangasana/Cobra, Ardha Dhanurasana/Half Bow Pose, Eka Pada Raja Kapotasana/King Pigeon , Janu Sirsasana/Head Beyond Knee Pose, Paschimottanasana/Seated Forward Fold, Gomukhasana/Cow’s Face, and Supta Baddha Konasana/Reclined Bound Angle.
    Props Needed: 8 or 10 foot yoga strap

    Dr. Melissa West, so so good to see you again after a decade of not being able to remember your name (besides other obstacles that I have been breaking thru) but hoping to see you again. This video is absolutely the best that I could have hoped for as using the strap support for getting my foot to reach the back of my head is a goal that I’m trying to achieve. Even at 65 years old I’m amazed at what my body can do now that I couldn’t ever even get close to when I was younger. So glad to be able to practice yoga at least twice a day every day.I have subscribed what a great day today is!

    I've been teaching yoga for a little more than two years, and I am still amazed that I find myself in this role. I stumbled upon yoga after the birth of my daughter because my body was BEGGING me to do something, (anything!) and so I surprisingly found myself on a yoga mat in the middle of the gym one day. I had no idea that yoga would begin to change my life in huge, dramatic ways- all of which have been such a blessing- and I knew I had to share this gift with others. As a newer yoga teacher, I am constantly researching and studying yoga- through the ancient teachings, through different teachers, and through videos like this one. This was my first master's class to see of yours and I plan on becoming a member tonight to learn more along these lines. I have been searching for this information at a painstakingly slow rate, and I am ecstatic to learn that you have done all of this research already. What an incredible blessing- one that will not only benefit me but my students as well. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    Thank you for yet another "change my life" video, Melissa. What would I do without you? Seriously. Something about the asanas in this video has helped me develop muscles in places I don't have them and helped to strengthen my weaker left side. I have done this video at least once a week since it came out and it has been tremendously helpful and for that I'm tremendously grateful! :)

    Love, love, love this video. Was not even aware that I have a difficult time accepting support from others, (well, maybe a little aware) and do sometimes think of the strap as a cheat. This was a wonderful class to help us understand the connection we all have and how to get more out of some of the yoga poses that may be difficult to accomplish. As always, Melissa and Tim, thank you so much for your work and dedication to those of us aspiring to become better individuals and better citizens of this earth. My days are so much more blessed, or rather, suppose I am more aware of the blessings when I begin the day with your classes.

    Can you believe that in 8 years of practice I've been putting the strap on the arch of my foot all along? Thanks for clarifying that it should go on the ball. Wish I had a longer strap for some of these! One "kooky" variation I like is lying on back, make a big loop with strap, wrap one end around ball of foot and other behind occipital bones of skull (not neck!) with other leg extended to stretch neck & hamstring simultaneously.

    • @drmelissawest
      @drmelissawest  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dear Bianca, I can believe it Bianca, I knew to do it and I forget sometimes too, it was something that I remembered when planning this class. I saw that variation that you were talking about when I was planning this class, sounds like a neat stretch! :) Namaste, Melissa

  • @kellysavvides2078
    @kellysavvides2078 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Melissa, this class was interesting. Some of the poses even with the strap were too advanced for me - dancers and pigeon poses - whereas others I didn't need the strap at all. I like the way you give permission to use the strap as an aid rather than a cheats tool, it encourages responsible practice especially when doing it online like this at home. I feel like I need to do another class though after this one, as the class was more of a 'how to' / educational rather than a practice in itself if that makes sense. However, I'm glad I've done it as it makes me feel like a more responsible and informed practicer, especially given that I'm a newbie to yoga. Thank you xo
