I'm Persian and deeply in love with Russian culture.❤I can't find enough words to explain my love for this heavenly song .Next to admiring Russian music and culture in general,I also had the honor to meet many many Russians for the last 2 years and can't tell how nice and lovely people they are ..just one of the coolest nations I've ever met at my job.❤my comment is taking too long, but I must mention all my childhood is tied to so many beautiful Russian animations ,Persians version of this song in kids' story tapes and so on ...My never ending love for all Russians ❤❤

The best thing about Kharitonov is that his performance isn't all about him as a performer, rather he strives to embody the spirit of the song because he's singing it in honor of all the burlaks who suffered and died in the barge-haulings of Tsarist Russia. He lives the song, he becomes it.

I first heard this song when I was a child in the 60s. My mother had this big box set of "music from around the world" and I'd play them routinely. I've been singing "Volga Boatmen" since then.
