im really happy with how they did this. In the manga it was a page turn, you would see makima sitting on the train and then turn the page and she was shot. I feel like this was the best possible translation of that to screen

Mappa has somehow figured out how to make a PERFECT translation from manga to anime. With a TATSUKI FUJIMOTO series. Absolutely incredible.
It's brutal because we were just about to, not only get to know Himeno better but experience a true friendship between Denji and her. This show is amazing.

I hope denji doesn't go soft and looses his edge but to keep being unhinged. Haven't read the manga but it seems in a world like this, you can't hesitate or get too attached to others, he needs to become a full on demon like Eren. (Based on slight spoilers)

@@krahser6914 he already had plot armor in the show. Them taking five hours to put him in the truck was dumb as hell and hes been saved two times now exactly before being fucked. That’s plot armor. In anime it’s normal but it’s still plot armor.

reminds me of Kusanagi sword from the darkness 2, Inugami had to feed that sword a wicked soul everyday or lose a year of his life, according to Inugami he has missed 17 days feeding it, so he is missing 17 years of his life.
I remember how crazy the pace of this story was when reading the manga as it came out. Now that it's being animated 3-4 issues per episode, this show's story just explodes and its going to keep exploding

Ok, Ive seen 8 reactions to this so far, and out of all of those, you guys are the FIRST ones to say "oh hes like Denji" thank you for somebody actually saying it.

Some interesting trivia, the kanji of Himeno's name means "princess" (姫 hime) and "field, wilderness, countryside" (野), i.e. "Field Princess", which explains/connects with a lot of the imagery featuring Himeno in this episode's ED, if anyone was curious.
(and for people who are extra interested in the symbolic details of the series, her relationship with Aki also partially connects back to the symbolism of the "The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse" storybook Aki's parents were reading to Aki's little brother in the flashback in episode 5)
Also the new bad guy is called Katana Man by the fandom IIRC. Also if it wasn’t clear, the Katana Man was actually “killed” by the Curse Devil, but since he’s a hybrid like Denji, and there’s enough blood around and he (or someone else) can activate his trigger (e.g. like Denji’s chest cord), which is presumably what the girl with the Snake Devil did, a hybrid like him can revive himself indefinitely.
For anyone curious about Himeno’s age, the exact number has never been given but the general minimum range can be estimated based on information we know about other characters. Since the drinking and smoking age in Japan is 20, and Aki has been smoking long enough to be addicted and has known beat cops long enough to be going drinking with them regularly, Aki is likely at least 21 years old.
And we can confidently say Himeno is at least 3 years older than Aki, so at minimum Himeno is in her mid 20s if not older.
And for anyone who is genuinely confused/curious, to understand the age of consent in Japan it’s like this: the National Age of Consent is 13 (though there are currently efforts to raise it to 16), but all 47 prefectures of Japan have passed ordinances that make the age of consent 18 (or more specifically ban sexual acts between adults and individuals under the age of 18). So it’s effectively 18 nation-wide.
So if Himeno did have sex with Denji, that would be illegal in Japan since every prefecture has those ordinances, and like she said in today’s episode could be arrested for that.

The overall ambiance of CSM is like a fusion between Tarantino's direction and the Constantine movie's setting and overall atmosphere. Can't wait for the next episodes!

the "Kon!" scenes strongly remind me of Angela getting dragged by someything invisible across the top of the bldg they're in.
The Special Division uniforms, as stylistically drawn as how John Constantine wore it, gives plus points to MAPPA.
The previous cigarette scenes from both Aki and Himeno... Makima's eyes like those of the movie's Half-Breeds' eyes. I really like it! Constantine was one of my fave movies that I grew up with.
i love how mappa animated the running of every character were not faster than a real human average. they run like normal people run, and adding the expression to trying hard to get faster is just a cool detailed that i loved.
"My grandpa only killed a handful of women and children" Casually leaves out the number of men he killed , made me laugh a lot.
What I found the most chilling was that on the train when they shot Makima, the rest of the passengers didn't even flinch or freak out, so there's either some paranormal thing at play or everyone on that train was in on it.
One cool thing to bare in mind is that whenever Makima talk to Denji, you would think she is uplifting him up with her kind words. If you think about what she say to Denji, theyre kinda romantic yet could also mean on complete different way. Like on the lollipop scene. She's so bold and could hint her plans for future while being calm and collected. Too bad it was cut out on here but for me it's the smartest move that the series had in this episode.

I believe the ending song's portrayal about how Aki is going to cemetery alone and leaving flower for Himeno and now he is inheriting the legacy of Himeno by being the one who have to see people off in cemetery or himself is pretty cool.
When I watched this episode I was literally speechless and couldn't move my face a little bit even tho I wanted to cry. There are rarely moments in anime tgat really shock me on that Level lile that episode did.
This episode felt like the red wedding.

The animation is so fluid that if u told me they Rotoscoped this I would believe you.
-Himeno doesnt have an eye, exchanged for the Ghost arm...and the Ghost is covered with the flowers people leave at graves
-Shes at least in her mid 20s because she's old enough to have lost at least 5 partners over the years and has been working with aki for 3 years and she's older than him and she called Arai a kid and he's 22
-Aki has a contract with The Curse Devil and and the nail sword(Nailed to the cross with three nails) reduces aki's lifespan by a lot
-And Pochita did ask for something and made two deals with denji. First deal, he agreed to help denji for denji saving his life. Second deal, he said I'll give you my heart in exchange to show me your dreams because I always loved hearing you talk about them. And it's been confirmed pochita is alive in denji's chest so when Denji is talking to him he is literally talking to him. It's unconventional but it is a contract devils make

MAPPA's really doing an outstanding job with Chainsaw Man, better than I think anyone would've expected. I just imagined if they'd did all of Berserk, that would be so awesome.
I agree. Berserk is my fav anime but the animation is so horrible after the very first one. I just stuck to manga after that.
Ufotable or MAPPA adapting the full story of Berzerk would be a dream

R.I.P Himeno 😭😭😭
Himeno is a long veteran of the devil hunting business and Aki became a veteran himself under her tutelage. During their long years of working together Himeno must have seen Aki use his cursed nail sword multiple times in life and death encounters with devils. The cost is real but the future is uncertain, Himeno knows this and doesn't want her time with Aki to shorten further. Though her logic is flawed since Aki is still determined to destroy the Gun devil, an ambition that surely lead to death and failure.

In order to make use of the Curse Devil's attack, Aki has to sacrifice some of his lifespan. 20 years I think. In order to activate it, he needs to hit his enemy with a nail first to paint the target.

God, Sweet Dreams is such a perfect track it ruins me. When I first heard it again after Pochita revived Denji all I could see was snow balls and birthday cake, and now I'm even more fucking destroyed.

After watching like tons of reaction videos on EP 8 I can say that the train scene where it's just silence and the gunmen just ducked at the same time made everyone say "wtf"
this episode to me is like what the eclipse was for berserk in terms of pacing and setting the story up. now with only 4 episodes left this season we get into the meat and potatoes of what the CM world is really about.

The devil with creepy head, flowers and multiple arms was the real form of Ghost devil. Himeno sacrificed her everything to summon Ghost's full power.

The Sword dude admitted to losing because he underestimated Aki is the contrast to Aki using the sword right away even though he knew it's gonna be a big drawback.

I've seen more than a couple reactions already and you guys are the first to understand how the sword guy could have possibly survived the Curse Devil. Denji did get his neck broken and got back up thanks to Himeno pulling his trigger last episode after all

1) those people weren’t possessed by the gun devil. They were carrying out a mass assignation using guns (presumably to empower the gun devil by increasing fear or something) plus the gun devil would appear in a place with mass gun crime (like how it appeared in America the first time). Guns aren’t meant to be accessible in Japan so they could be trying to summon it to Japan.
2) what did Aki have to give for using the sword? They said in one of the last episodes… he gives away years from his lifespan to use it.
So it finally begins. Y'all better saddle tf up because the next couple episodes are going to be crazy.

Aki's Nail: A contract with the Curse Devil that allows him to say the command, "shoot" and the devil will help flick the nail like a hammer into his opponents. After 3 stabs the Curse Devil can finish them off. The cost is taking years off Aki's life span.

Denji would be classified as hybrid, he did have a contract with pochita but it wasn’t anything for him to give up but rather to live a normal life and show pochita his dreams. It is a rare thing to see but nonetheless it’s still a contract (If I’m not mistaken). As for the normal devils hunters they make contracts with devils who they don’t bond with, just the more common type of devils: heartless, evil, pray for the downfall of humans type
Just want to make a note: in-universe, there’s no name for what Denji and Katana Man are, they’re only ever called “people who can turn into devils”. Hybrid is a word the fandom uses as shorthand.
