Hi, Chloe! School counselor here-if it’s ok with you, I’d love to add a few points in the comment section-I don’t want to offer advice/insight if it’s unwanted.

Excellent! Thanks for letting me use your platform! I was so excited to watch this and look forward to your posts. Your insight has helped me with some of my kiddos at work.
1: it might not be a bad idea to research different theoretical orientations-most of us are eclectic and use a little bit of everything. Your counselor/therapist will probably tell you a bit about this during your intake (first session) but they may also allude to it if they have an “about me” section on their page. This will save you time and will probably help you find someone you “click with.” Examples of theoretical orientation might be DBT, CBT, yada yada yada.
2: The relationship you have with your counselor/therapist is IMPORTANT!!! Trust is a sacred space. Take your time-because I know that when I see a counselor (gasp-yes, even mental health professionals see mental health professionals!!) if I’m feeling more pushed to share than encouraged to share-there’s a good chance I won’t come back. Intake sessions are there to gather background information-if there is something you aren’t comfortable discussing just yet, we’ll get there, together when trust has been established. My hope is that anyone going into an intake session wouldn’t be intimidated into sharing something they aren’t ready for.
3: Many mental health professionals use a sliding scale, meaning you pay what you can afford. My experience is that this is generally offered when receiving services from the county. Not sure what these are called in other countries 😅
4: Students, please utilize your school counselors and school social workers. We also provide counseling. Its not meant to be long term but we can help you find resources and make referrals. College students: there are likely counselors on your campus and there is a good chance their services are already included in your tuition or use a sliding scale.

I give therapy online and in my office, and I find that the patients that I treat online are more open in sharing because they dont feel the anxiety of being in an office and of sharing their deepest thoughts.

i think finding a specialist therapist is a really good if you can afford it. i remember when i would go completely nonverbal with my last therapist and she didn’t know how to engage with me properly and she signed me off early because she got frustrated with me not being able to engage. but once i started seeing a therapist that specialises in autistic people, she knew how to engage with me properly and how to make me feel comfortable enough to talk to her. i also think writing down stuff as it happens is important because i often can’t remember stuff that happened or how i felt earlier in the week.

    • @savannam.7048

I couldn't agree more with you. Even on a general level, if a person is not clicking and comfortable with the therapist they're seeing, and the dynamic is not conducive to facilitating communication, honesty and working towards a healing goal, absolutely they should find another therapist. Sometimes the wrong therapist is not only uncomfortable for the patient, but also can sometimes do more harm than good.
After my first consult with my therapist, she asked me to keep two types of journaling: one traditional, full of my thoughts, experiences and what I do day to day; the other I wrote down three times a day what I was feeling at that moment (for example, anxious, worried, angry about X, could and often was multiple feelings,) to rate any pain I had and where, and any other symptoms, such as tiredness or fatigue, my alternating stomach upsets, migraines or headaches, etc. Lastly, she asked me to detail my sleep patterns in the journal with symptoms.
These journals when kept up, in addition to what we would talk about, gave her a much wider picture than just what I thought of during the sessions. It was integral to getting diagnosed with IBS-A, Generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder and PTSD. Part of the reason they led to a PTSD diagnosis is because I journaled flashbacks in great detail, but I thought they were just normal memories or remembering something in the moment that made me feel bad, and I was having nightmares and night terrors.
Journaling can be extremely important as a tool during therapy, in addition to be cathartic for the patient. All in all, I agree 100% with your comment. The only thing I'd add is: You are your own most important and most powerful advocate. If you're uncomfortable with your therapist, speak up and find a new one. If you're having new symptoms, tell them honestly. If their methods are making you feel worse, speak up. If you genuinely feel that medicine they're giving you isn't right or helping, say something. Stand up for yourself. Only you KNOW you. Only you know how you feel, what's affecting you. You have a voice. Use it. Be the advocate you need for the care you need.

  • @FlailTV

Funnily enough, my problem is that I DON'T know what's troubling me. I can't see it. I just feel the...trouble. So...that's fun!
And quite frankly I'm finding that therapy makes things worse before it gets better. Like...when your teabag turns out to be broken and your mug is full of tea bits that have settled to the bottom, and then you stir it. Oops. Like. Those bits of tea were FINE when they were at the bottom of the mug where I probably wouldn't have to worry about them. Now they're everywhere. Blech! But it's the only way to get to the bottom of the mug. You can't pick out the bits while the tea is still hot unless they're closer to the surface. I was going to say that the analogy sort of falls apart at this point because you could just use a spoon...but I think maybe the therapy is the spoon. Or the therapist. Or both. I didn't think this through. :D The point is that you can't deal with things while they're buried, but digging them up is hard, and will mess with you, but that just means it's working. So if anyone is just starting therapy, don't be surprised if you find yourself feeling more unsettled or off or whatever for a while. Stick with it.

I use Betterhelp.com myself and strongly recommend it! I will say the 24/7 thing isn't necessarily true, it depends on the counselor you are paired with on how much they respond. My current counselor checks his messages twice a day - in the morning and in the evening. He's only human. He can't wake up from dead sleep at 3:00 in the morning just because I sent him a message lol :D

+Mariana, make sure to look up what is prescribed to you to make sure you're okay with the possible side effects. Both my mother and sister had a hard time getting off of certain ones that now have black box warnings on them regarding addiction. Also don't be afraid to tell your doctor if you don't think it's working for you, because some people need different medication since it's all messing with neurotransmitters in the brain. (And they don't necessarily know how the meds work.) Best wishes!

Hope you are going well now Mariana 🤗 Anti depressants are great if they suit you, I was on Zoloft first and didnt go well with me I was very numb emotionally but it kept me safe in the meantime, now I am on Lexipro and it is amazing, I ran out over the holidays and can really tell the difference now I am back on them. Less panic attacks, anxiety is low, depression is stable, ptsd triggers have lesser of an impact and my ocd is less annoying lol
Hope they are going okay for you and hope all is going okay 😊

Hi Chloe & the rest of Dissociadid!! My name's Brigitte. I deal with Anxiety and Depression on a daily basis. The way you approach both DID and mental illness in general is so kind and generous and graceful, thank you so much. I found you on TH-cam last week, have been getting to know the whole system and so much about DID, and I'm so glad to see your journey unfold on here, and that you seem happy and healthy at this stage in your life. I'm preparing to go back to school, [I am 25 living in Springfield, Illinois USA] and mental illness is something I've always wanted to learn more about. I'm going for Physical Therapy, but also want a degree in psychology. Sending love and best wishes in life and on your channel! Can't wait to learn more, I appreciate so you very much!

what you said about making sure your therapist understand what you mean and don't brush over some things is really important! i have severe anxiety with occasional panic attacks and my old therapist just wouldn't get that my anxiety wasn't limited to the panic attacks, and that miscommunication/misunderstanding really disrupted the progress i could have made there.

Thank you for making this. I've been out of therapy for several years, I stopped going because my depression prevented me from having the energy/motivation keep going. I'm also I bit of a compulsive people pleaser, so it was hard for me to be really honest with my therapist. I've since started taking notes and have enlisted my mom's help on looking for a therapist. What you guys are doing, what you're choosing to share with us, is helping people. As a person without DID, this already helped me become a more empathetic person, and showed me that you don't always know what's going on with people behind the scenes, so you should always be respectful. But this video was the first one that inspired me to take positive action in my own life. Thank you. Thank you so so much. You are doing beautiful things in the world.

This was so helpful! it's something I wish i'd had when i first went to therapy since i had NO IDEA what to expect. thankfully my experience was great and although i only went for around 10 weeks it helped a lot and taught me stuff i still use today. also just a lil' thing for anyone who might be reading this if you're under 18 i'd recommend you find someone who's dealt with people of you age if not younger. It might sound kinda unimportant but i know for me, seeing someone who had experience with people a lot younger than me was a lot less daunting. (also Chloe or whoever may be reading this hi! i think you have to put in the title or description of the video that the video is sponsored. I have been in therapy for 15+ years. I had to go through anger management along with PTSD therapy. It has CHANGED MY LIFE for the better. It gave me the tools to deal with things that pop up in life. I didn’t learn good coping skills so really needed that guidance. This video is BRILLIANT. This video sends such a great message. Everyone, I believe, should be in therapy. THANK YOU for posting this. I talk about therapy a lot on IG. I feel like there is this negative stigma with therapy and the more we talk about it the more we normalize it.
I have also been to many therapists before I fount one I loved. It’s important to be open to the process and have patience.

I've learned so much about mental health in general, but you've also helped me put to words the things I've been feeling but couldn't explain. I was ready to quit on therapy because I felt like I wasn't getting my feelings out there properly but since watching your video explaining depersonalization and derealization (which is something I've really been struggling with lately) I feel like I better understand how to explain what I'm feeling to my therapist and I feel like we've made a lot of progress since.

I've been going to CAMHS for over a year. I see a psychologist, psychiatrist, and a family therapy team. Nothing is working. I am on a load of meds (they do nothing ) and it's not like it try to be awkward, but I can't connect with my psychologist (I see her most) and when ever I said I wanted to swap therapists (as politely as possible) she dismissed it. Last week, she finallaly said I didn't have to see her for a while. Then I might get a new therapist. I couldn't just leave CAMHS cos it's payed for by the NHS and without it I wouldn't of got my EHCP. But it's still anoying. Thank you for sharing this with us ❤ I'm so glad you have a nice Therapist. I use to go to one therapy place and it helped with my depression but I was lying to my therapist all the time because I felt so uncomfortable with them. I was able to get what I needed too across and symptoms but I was not really able to go to them with my actual issues and emotions. I stopped therapy and medication after I felt more and more capable of coping on my own (I went for depression and anxiety which was mainly situational at the time although I was diagnosed as it not being always situational). I’m now returning back to therapy after having some dissociative issues. (Not DID but Derealization). And having a video like this helps me to know what to expect again and feel more comfortable going into it. Something to note is to always be honest and make sure you’re comfortable with your therapist. If you’re not, you won’t be receiving the help you need. I was very nervous to tell my mom and my therapist that I didn’t feel comfortable with them and to try another one but switching therapist did help me get through what I needed too.

I've been in and out of therapy for 9 years. This information is still relevant! I also would love to consider online therapy, but the financial side is an issue because most don't take insurance. I found a therapist a couple of towns over that also has Fibromyalgia, though. I feel so incredibly lucky to have found her. It wasn't even done on purpose! Anyway, I ramble.
Emotional support pets are also amazing, and help more than therapy most of the time. Bandersnatch also lays on my chest when I have anxiety pain in my chest. He's such a good furchild. ❤️

Aloha DissociaDID! Initially, I started watching your videos out of curiosity. I believe the human brain is capable of anything when protecting yourself or others. I really don't know what else to say, but thank you. Although I may not understand the situations you have faced, I'm grateful for your strength to help others learn about their issues. It's a little embarrassing as I'm older, but thanks to you, I finally inquired about therapy. I've been bottling up all kinds of things for years and it's getting worse. Thank you again and take care!

Thanks Chloe, this really helps! I've been thinking about therapy, and trying to research different options and therapists but it all still seems a bit overwhelming. I will definitely try to write the main points down and also not expect to have everything figured out after one session! Thanks again for doing this (video and channel in general), it's been really eye-opening and educational :)

    Happy Birthday!! 🌈
You are so great at these educational videos, super friendly and explain everything well and very informative.
I haven't gone to therapy since December. My therapist left the practice and I've booked with the new one a few times but chicken out and fake sickness. It's hard starting over! Atleast this one will have notes hopefully, seen they took over in the same practice, but they'll still want a run down and it'll rehash everything.
One thing I feel like you missed, but maybe this didn't happen to you? I feel like people should be aware that when you start therapy you can get worse before you start to feel better. You're diving into your anxieties and traumas, you may find you have nightmares and flash backs in the coming days after a therapy session. But don't run away from therapy(like I have many times), because the therapist has the tools to help teach you how to handle these dark times better.
I would love to check out the link, I hope it's world wide. We have new crisis contacts popping up in Australia now that you can text instead of ringing. Such good news! I haaaate phone calls, I avoid them as much as I can, so the last thing I wana do when feeling vulnerable is speak on the phone

Sadly the last time I tried to see a Counselor (here in Australia) She listened to me for an hour and then said "Well There is not much we can do about any of those things and you just need to suck it up and deal. It's your life so you need to deal with it yourself. "
I asked about booking another appointment and She said " No point".
I did not return and am unlikely to try again.

Lovely video :) I’m on a waiting list for free therapy, which is awesome, but I’m very nervous to meet the therapist. I was forced to see a counselor during childhood, and she spent the entire sessions just filling her paperwork. For most sessions, I didn’t even talked at all. For 30min. I went there for three years. Now I just wish to meet a good therapist!!

This is a great video ❤ definitely one of the best betterhelp sponsored videos I've seen, and you've focussed on a lot of really important ideas ❤ they are all things that I know but it's so easy to forget these things when the anxiety builds before the sessions xx
I can't even afford the weekly fee for betterhelp because I have to support myself financially on the very small income I can make while studying full-time at university, however last week I did finally make the step of getting a referral to a psychiatrist at a different campus of my uni that I don't have to pay for! My appointment isn't until November and I'm very anxious but I know it's a great step in the right direction 😊😊
I have seen a lot of counsellors etc in the past and psychologists but decided it was finally time to step it up because I haven't been getting the full help that I need

i just finished 3 years of therapy, because i moved out to a different city... currently looking for a new therapist. it’s scary and hard to think about having to share my struggles from the beginning all over again BUT therapy is worth it; it has been my best tool fighting through my mental health struggles. i have been medicated once over 5 years of diagnosed depression, because i found that therapy was working unexpectedly well for me (there’s absolutely nothing wrong with medication though!!! different tools for different people!)
therapy is scary, it’s a progress and it. takes. time. you need to be patient with yourself and forgive yourself and give yourself space and time, but it’s rewarding as a whole. there’s nothing better than being told by your therapist that they are proud of the progress you’ve made during the time they’ve seen you... or maybe there is, when YOU are able to see the progress!
i seriously hope anyone struggling out there gives therapy a chance. if you are in a stable enough situation to afford it, it will help. maybe not on its own, maybe not in the same way as others, but it will give you some answers, it will guide you at least a little, and honestly when you’re in such darkness, even the tiniest light can help you find your way out.
best of luck to all of you struggling. you’re loved and cherished and i hope you find your way.

I've done BetterHelp counselling.. From there I discovered I have social anxiety. Everything fell in place, it all made sense to me for 21 years why I act the way I do.
I really want to do in office counselling but I feel like because of the anxiety, that i wont commit to it like i should be. There's more of myself that I really need answers to but this is the only thing guarding my courage... sigh

It took me sooooo many counsellors and therapists to find the right one for us. We've been going for the longest with him now and Im so glad that I found the right one who we've been sticking to. They were times some of us found it so hard to go and didn't want to go, but my therapist feels it's extremely important to tell him what we didn't like in therapy, so he can work it around us.
We have some therapy diaries so we can write our thoughts and not having to remember to say it in the session - especially somebody else was out in the session and doesn't connect to what's its been written, we simply had the notebook and let our therapist read it. I even do that the times I wrote something but don't actually say it out loud.
Many therapists in UK do online/phone counselling (video chat, phone, or email) and they also do face to face. So if you are anxious meeting in person first, you can have email sessions then if you felt you are ready to meet them in person, simply ask for face to face sessions.
Im sorry for the long a** comment. I love your videos and thank you very much for talking about therapy - it was one of my request. I would like to hear more about it - your personal experiences and types of therapies perhaps? Thank you xx
