Great video! Thanks again for restoring it, yeah it doesn’t sound too good but at least it runs for now

I started on Tyco with the Rock Island 4301 just like that engine in a road and rail set. A slot car set came with the train set. The train crossed the racetrack. Hours of fun back then! I still have it from 1978, 1979 or so. It’s nice to see how to service these engines the way you do

Hello beautiful tyco you should clean the wheel contacts and check the cables and the motor where the coals are, clean it with the pencil eraser. I restored trains for years. Greetings we could be in touch

You make it look so easy Harrison. As soon as you put the wheels back on, I thought they were on wrong. But you got it right eventually. So as I said before, pick up parts locomotives for cheap when you see them, so you have parts if need be. Keep track of what you paid, and if you scavange a part for the repair add it to the shipping cost to send back to the subscriber. Tycos are a dime a dozen. Hope you get it running better before sending it back. Another cool Canadiana, but the 🦈 nose has it beat. Nice video and like that you took the time to share a subscriber's letter. Ah, the lost art of letter writing via 🐌 mail.
    👍👍👍

SMT - Be sure to also check the metal gear to make sure that no solder has gotten onto the gear teeth, or between them. You can use a bare piece of wire, dipped in flux, to " wick away " excess solder by placing the wire between the gear & the tip of your soldering gun. The solder would be drawn away from the gear & coat the wire.

You should get a smaller iron for more precise jobs.
When you solder, if you are concerned about heat melting plastic, take something metal (like a small screwdriver) and touch it to the metal shaft near the gear you want to protect. -- The metal in the screwdriver will bleed the excess heat away before it gets to the gear.

I got a Tyco SD40 once off eBay, and it didn't run at all. Motor and bogie swap later, and it's a sweet little runner.

SMT - I wonder when the previous owner soldered the metal gear onto the armature shaft, the plastic gear's teeth that contact the metal gear got hot? This could cause those gear teeth to melt & deform. That might explain the stalls & " ticking " sound. You may want to try putting another gear from a Power Torque motor in your parts' drawer in its place & test it again. Maybe needle files & an X-acto knife would be useful for reshaping any deformed gear teeth?

I had a Rock Island version of this. Never ran and oddly enough, the powered truck couldn't even pivot! I tried filing and everything to get the truck to pivot freely enough to at least make a dummy out of it but nope. Just couldn't do anything about it.

That’s one for the trophy case. Years later children will ask if she ever ran and they’ll be told “yes, in her prime, but now we don’t touch her, we just admire from afar”

Have you thought about replacing that armature with a spare from another Tyco loco? I would THINK that with Tyco's mass production, that there has GOT to be another armature around that would work. Other than that - another great job!
