    Tip of the hat mister! It's the second restoration video that comes in handy as i owned and old Tyco F7 and a Shark Nose and now i know how to restore them. Those locos were bought by my grand father and never run. Unfortunatelly he was unable to finish his layout as he passed away six months ago. So now it's me who is working on the layout and bringing these locos back to life and giving them the place they deserve. Again thanks for this restoration videos. Cheers my friend

    Great to see SMT Mainline developing an understanding for yourself and viewers that things break for a reason and can often be simply fixed. A great life skill that everyone can benefit by. Recommend you get some crocodile clips to help make a reliable test electrical connection. Does this Model Power loco have any Roco markings on it? Roco made many high standard models for Model Power and Atlas back in the 70s. Although this vid is titled Canadian National Shark Restoration, the important fact is that you are repairing a Model Power / Roco mechanism. Colour scheme is irrelevant to searches. A Tyco Shark would be a different kettle of fish and would give no where near the great result you achieved. There are sharks and sharks, some very good makes some not so good. In the 80s I assisted with a four day model railway exhibition where a 10 year old Model Power/ Roco Shark ran so well for all 4 days and some nights yet at the end showed no signs of wear and still ran great. A quality product.

    Sometimes it can be as simple as old lubricants, Harrison. One still needs to know how to take the loco apart, relubricate it, and put it back together properly, and you are doing an awesome job sharing your expertise with all the "Folks" out there. 🌟 🌟 🌟 I haven't even attempted to run the Tyco 🦈 Nose Burlington Northern I picked up (new in box), but I imagine it may have the same issue. Nice CN 🦈 Nose by the way, and Bravo on another success! 👍👍👍

    Plenty of nice weight, nice pickup mechanism, solid wires to take the current straight to the motor... That would make a good DCC/sound convert. It would do pretty well on grades too, I bet.

    Not surprised about the condition of the old grease. All the modern stuff is synthetic while the older oils and grease was not and would end up just like what you found. Just a suggestion though. I would have greased the gears because with out lubricant they will ware faster when they mesh. Other than that it was a cool restoration.

    • @SMTMainline
      @SMTMainline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I put a fair amount of synthetic oil so the gears are not completely lubricated, I might add some more if it shows signs of poor performance.

    • @captainbill12
      @captainbill12 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SMTMainline it isn't poor performance I am thinking about. Those gears will wear out fast if they are not greased up properly. I have seen that before.

      It generally depends on the manufacturer.
      Some outfits such as Athearn would use the same frame as a powered A or B and just use plastic wheelsets while some of the " toy" outfits might use a glorified freight car chassis.
      If it's some of the transition era ( about 25 30 years ago as Athearn transitioned from family ownership after Irv passed)blue box loco with a little work cleaning flash from gears and some simple tuning I was able to get those 30 40 dollar blue box locos running as quiet and with a creep speed on par with those 120 150 Stewart and Atlas locos
