    You’re fortunate to have located TWO American Flyer 0-6-0 switchers, as I searched for months before purchasing one, which is my favorite steam locomotive in my fleet.
    I enjoy your videos very much! 🚂

    Finally a donor locomotive Harrison. Let the Train Boneyard begin. As a couple of the other viewers said, small hair rubberbands will work for traction tires on the larger wheels, and they do come in black and clear. Good job making one complete working locomotive from the pair! 🎄🎄🎄

    If you need traction tires the best thing I found to replace them are the rubber bands that are used for braces on your teeth, I used them on multiple engines, both diesel and steam, and they work great, are the perfect size and do not slip, I highly suggest using them

    Awesome, I fixed up my AF 0-6-0 awhile back. It was the type that came in a train set so no smoke unit. I used small hairbands for the traction tires and it works great. The motors are built to last so you just need to clean it and properly lube. Great job!

    2 locomotives in 1 being restored? I see this as a absolute win

    An added benefit of that type of smoke unit is that the smoke is always synchronized.

    Great 99% restoration SMT, small detail for a traction tire that is very important the main thing you gave life back to the American steam flyer, I haven't forgotten you soon you will get a wonderful package in your P.O box hope to see it run on your wonderful layout. P.S until you can get some plexiglass to protect engines from falling off layout you can use cardboard 3 inches high or 2 inches, I know it may look occurred and hide part of your trains but at least all will be protected until you can buy some plexiglass.

    Nice restoration! Some advice, I would look on HO Seeker for part diagrams for any locomotive you are not familiar with before tearing it apart. It just makes things a lot easier when you know what to do beforehand.

    Time To Eat a Late Night Grilled Cheese with Chicken Broth as a drink while watching SMT. I remember seeing this locomotive back when I first subscribed and I sorta thought at the back of my head what happened to this engine. Well during this late-night I finally get to know what happened.
    Good Work Harrison

    Hello SMT Mainline I have many of these American flyer HO locomotives, the AC Gilbert Company started making this loco in 1949 as Pennsylvania #155 in 1955 #433 & in 1958-1963 # 31004 they also the B&O #31019 with smoke & Choo Choo & a # 31031 B&O, 31036 Erie without smoke & Choo Choo The AC Gilbert American Flyer ended their HO in 1963 in 1967 the ac Gilbert Company went out of business ending their S gauge trains & erector sets. Today loinel is making American Flyer S gauge line. Hope this helps with the history of this locomotive

    Harrison made a remark along the lines of "it's a steam engine so it should have a smoke unit" - so should models of first generation Alco diesels

    So I’ve got a quick question. I have a few locomotive that need some minor repairs, broken draw bars and missing headlights and such. I don’t have the time, tools, skills or miscellanies parts to fix this minor repairs. Would you be interested I fixing them? I don’t have anything to pay you with, but I think it would be interesting to see a review and some live running of these locomotives on your channel. Kind of a temporary power lease. The locomotive I have in mind is somewhat rare and doesn’t get much screen time and I think it would be cool to see on a larger channel. I don’t know how we’d set up an arrangement like this but if your interested I’m sure we can figure it out.

    I have a late 40’s early 50’s American Flyer model 312
    My grandfather got it when he was around 10 I think and it stopped working when my dad was 11 I’m pretty sure
    Any idea’s about how me and my dad can restore it??
    Edit: also I think it’s a scale S, will that work with HO? And does that make a difference in restoring it?

    • @allendykstra9339
      @allendykstra9339 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I started restoring and collecting American flyer s gauge trains about 5 years ago and my best answer is to buy gilbert American flyer s gauge operating and repair guide volume 1 and 2 by thomas b. Barker plus he his TH-cam video called Gilbert American flyer repair clinic witch explains rebuild smoke units, reversing units moters in detail. and also his a TH-cam autobiography on A.C.Gilbert himself witch a found very interesting
      And s guage is a bit wider ho and also run ac current

    Hello everyone

  • @patrickwamsley3284
    @patrickwamsley3284 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why the five digest loco number though? I think I've seen these around but I can't wrap my head around why an American locomotive has a five digit number.

    • @allendykstra9339
      @allendykstra9339 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm an avid post war american flyer collector all though my collection is all s scale but the system is the same on the locomotive and the rolling stock the road/cab number doubles the model number not actual road or made up numbers and can be used as a reference point for getting parts specific to your locomotive. And from 1946 to 1957 they used a three-digit model number system then switched to five-digit from 1958 to 1966 when a.c. Gilbert toy company went under

    • @colbeausabre8842
      @colbeausabre8842 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The PRR used numbers in the 1XXXX series to indicate a locomotive living on borrowed time and due to be scrapped. No one else had anywhere close to 10,000 locomotives, so three and four digit numbers were used. PRR often reused numbers from scrapped locos - for many years a H6sb Consolidation bore Number 1.

    • @wheelhorseman2306
      @wheelhorseman2306 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gilbert computerized and they had too many parts for three digits so they went to five digits in S and HO gauge. Always amazing to see how much the value of a car can change based on the number, even when everything else stayed the same. Interestingly, in the S gauge version of this engine, the catalogue showed a three digit number but the company only produced it with a five digit number- if it says "263" it's a repaint/relettered that someone did based on the catalogued picture. This was a controversy for many years but senior employees finally set the record straight.

    If the smoke unit doesn't work spray a little wd40 down there and let it soak for 24 hours then turn it upside down for a hour or 2 and then put 5 to 6 drops of smoke fluid in it same goes for there s scale stuff

    WRONG!!! Never melt heat-shrink tubing with a direct flame. It will melt it, but also weaken it by making it brittle at the same time. Use the heat from a soldering gun or iron.
