Fluid drag (try a bike with a dry clutch and it wont do it)..... but a clutch dragging badly can be a sign of a notched basket, not allowing the clutch plates to release properly.
Yeah my bike drags with no oil in the clutch and gearbox side. The clutch basket looks slightly notched. Reckon it’s time to buy new clutch plates and file the basket?
Pretty new to bikes a really appreciate content like this! Making things a lot more comfortable! My mind always goes worst case scenario anytime I think something could be wrong with the bike
I really appreciated this video! My fiancé has a 98 rm 125, and I fully rebuilt the whole bike, without replacing the clutch. On the third heat cycle of breaking it in, when the clutch was in the bike moved in gear on the ground. I filed grooves in the basket and on the stand the wheel still moved. I did not test it on the ground again. If that happens again, what should I be looking into? The grooves are taken care of and the plates are in good condition.
OK, now my mind is at ease. Picked up a Beta 300 2T trials bike recently and thought the clutch was buggered as it drags a bit when the clutch is in. Thanks for the great content.
Anecdotally, I noticed on my '21 Husq TE300i that the drag was significantly worse if the oil was over-filled even a small amount so I'm more careful not to do that anymore.

@@dutchwindmillsvids hey mate. So 9/10 I’d say your clutch basket is worn. You can get a new one or file the old one down so the plates don’t get caught. I filed them down and it helped.

My husqvarna that I bought used was doing that, I fiddled with the clutch, and it made no difference, but then I changed the oil, and it stopped stalling when shifting to 1st, try an oil change, and possibly bleed or rebuild clutch cylinders. It may help or completely solve the issue.
MMKnight, on a bike that old it’s very possible that your clutch basket and inner hub are notched and worn out. I helped a buddy replace his inner hub, clutch basket and plates and it made a huge difference.
What about if a bike has excessive clutch drag. Like when you are on the bike and it starts to move fairly quickly and you need to use the brake or neutral to stop
you mean with the manual clutch lever held in right? simple answer is the clutch cable needs the slack taken out of it for the proper lever freeplay. but if that's not the issue... the oil could be too thick. the clutch is worn too far for the cable adjustment to make up for it. the clutch basket sides are worn out so the plates don't want to move due to the notches in the basket. sometimes the internal linkages wear down and loose travel of motion to move the clutch. could also be too thick of clutch plates or discs for another model bike.
I have a rmx450 has clutch drag but when it goes into gear it revs up high and really pushes back wheel badly with clutch in and then as soon as it goes back to neutral the revs go back down to idle any ideas on why that is
Hey have you ever experienced on your dirt bike that when you're traveling at any speed and in gear but when I pull in the clutch to come to a stop the dirt bike stalls. I can't figure it out.
I literally came to the comments for a similar issue, hadn’t started my ktm for a few weeks, started it up, went to put it in gear and kept stalling. I didn’t have time to let it get real hor or have a look I’m hoping someone can answer this question
is it normal that while the bike is off (also so can hear it better) and it is in gear with the clutch pulled in that it makes a click sound at first when rolling the bike forward or backward? Also seems like there is still some resistance when spinning the rear wheel with it off of the ground, with the clutch pulled in while in gear?
appreciate you for this. I thought something was wrong with my clutch. I used to use maxima 80wt for my xc300 tpi tranny oil now I moved to 85wt, I burnt my clutch at 35hrs. Do any of you think clutch dragging could be the reason my clutch burnt ?

When I put my 2018wr250 into gear it stalls out unless you rev it, on flat ground in first gear it also moves with the clutch fully pulled in. Any quick fixes or do I need to replace the clutch?
is it possible that there is a reasonable amount of clutch drag and an unreasonable amount? I never used to notice this when loading my bike onto hitch carrier but ever since my buddy crashed my brand new TBI pro, bending the clutch lever, I suddenly notice it being way harder to push around while in gear. I also recently changed the gear oil so I dont know if that is adding to the problem. anyways I never used to notice this when pushing bike around but now it is literally 5 times harder to push around compared to it being in neutral and sometimes it doesn't want to click down into 1st as well.... I dunno it bothers me that it wasn't like that before and I never noticed it but maybe im just tripping lol also I should mention my clutch lever seems to have almost no free play. I cant seem to find a spec in the manual for this how much freeplay is normal?
I understand clutch drag is normal but what if when i pull in the clutch the bike will roll forward unless i hold the brake. This is to much drag or is the clutch is not fully engaged? How do i adjust this?
That is too much drag. Typically the weight of the bike should be sufficient to stop the wheel from spinning. Check for clutch free play at the lever. And check for thrust washers in clutch basket. They can wear out so much that when the clutch nut is tightened, it can bind and drag as soon as you get out of neutral.

the reason why i came here is because my motorcycle wont go in neutral because of that clutch drag. so theres different level of severity of this clutch drag.
Just got this guys email.. I dont watch the channel all the time, but like the channel and love dirt bikes and off roading. So I enter your contest but cant win a bike cuz i dont watch all the time and cant answer your questions.. Winning a dirtbike could help someone get into the sport easier, or start a passion for it. But it seems like only hardcore fans have chance. Unsub'd.
