How to Test and Repalce an EVAP Canister HD

  • Today we remove and test an EVAP charcoal canister. The canister is designed to hold hydrocarbons from the fuel system when the vehicle is not running. Under normal operation, the vapor is sent to the intake manifold when the engine is operating. This was performed on a 1997 Nissan Maxima. Check with your vehicle's repair manual for testing parameters.

      Probably want to get a code reader first. Code readers aren't that expensive. If CEL came on for something else, messing with gas cap is already a waste of time/money.
      For example I'm getting intermittent code for "oxygen bank1 sensor1 slow response"... Damn code comes & goes; I probably just need to clean the O2 sensor.

    The flow of air from one port to another just means the air can still pass thru. The carbon has to still be activated to do its job. Once the carbon is no longer activated you have to replace it.

    Hey there, I am having a hell of a time trying to figure out my 2001 5.3L Silverado issue. It has been throwing a p0440 code ever since I replaced the knock sensors a month ago. I checked the purge solenoid that is on top of the intake manifold and it is working properly, or I at least tried blowing into it and it was shut. I feel like its something i did when putting the intake back in that made the code pop up because I didnt have the code before, just the p0330 code for the knock sensor. Can you point me in the right direction at least, so i dont have to go get a smoke test to figure this out? Any help would be appreciated!

    Man! I have a 2008 impreza 2.5i. Today i noticed cuel dripping from a hole in the center of the right fuel tank plastic protector cover. At first I thought it could be coming from around the fuel canister or one of it's hoses. But I think the fuel tank protector cover is not covering that fuel canister (not likely the canister). But now I think it's either than my fuel tank is rusted through (salt from winters), or the fuel pump assy is leaking (cracked plastic connector ?). Changing the tank is 1800 USD, so I will definitely going to check my fuel pump assy first (I recon the whole unit is around 400$). The thing is I see dripping and smell gas only just after filling up or when the tank is near full. Today I noticed that reving the engine cause the leak to manifest, becoming more visible, whereas when I cut off the engine, I'm having a hard time seeing any dripping at all. That leads me to believe my leak is fuel pressure-realted (hence more likely a pump leak than a tank leak). Man I really hope it's the pump assy and not a rusted tank !!! BUT for diagnostic purposes, IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, Is the fuel canister covered by the right fuel tank plastic cover protector ???? If not, it's not the canister leaking for sure.

      That's indicative of a bad evap canister. Have you replaced the canister? Scotty Kilmer has an older video regarding the exact same problem you're having. Just search his channel.

    thanks, I just went to a auto yards where you pull your own parts. took pictures of how everything is hooked up, pulled the part and replaced it on mine. still didn't take care of my problem. I've had the car for a month and replaced many parts, car still won't start. I'm about to push it in the river.

    It’s sounds asinine but try using spray olive oil (for cooking). I used it once because i was in a pinch about 15 years ago and won’t use anything else now.

    Before removing the canister ( disconnecting hoses/lines ) do you have to depressurize the fuel system first and if so, how? Is it as simple as removing the gas cap? Does the battery need also to be disconnected before you start removal of the canister?

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For most vehicles you do not have to depressurize the fuel system. It's a good idea to disconnect the battery whenever you work on any vehicle. Here's how to depressurize the system (watch the first minute): th-cam.com/video/kSXQJja8AVI/w-d-xo.html

      Any time you remove a wire harness, shop manuals advise disconnecting the ground wire on the battery. If you are working near the gas tank, it's always a good idea in case of an electrical short. BOOM!!!

    The mechanic that checked mine he left it on the vehicle all he did was remove a hose when he did a smoke test and you could see the white smoke coming out of the hose is this the correct way to check a cars charcoal canister?
    I mean obviously if you were move a hose it's going to be coming out of the hose I don't know I'm a little confused about it. I didn't see any white smoke at all coming out of the canister or anything like that until he removed one hose

    Good info. Unfortunately, I already assumed that at 150k, the canister was plugged. Now that I find its working ok, guess I'll just return it to Amazon... Probly not the only time this has happened. Or should I just replace it anyway??? Or will in never go bad??? Its doing a slow fill at the gas tank...Just started with this tank of gas, perfectly normal fill on the previous tank.

    Would a gas cap cause this problem

    • @skratchmyass

      Joseph Marrs it can... Tho I've replaced mine.. The purge valve, vent solenoid, checked the evap canister, replaced all the vent lines when replacing the fuel pump a year ago... Time to get it smoked i guess. Part of being a happy gm truck owner... Hope your gas cap worked out.

    2002 Tacoma v6 with gas smell after shutoff. Already replaced cap, no issues at pump. CEL codes P00440, P00441 & P00446. Tech thinks a bad vapor canister?

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's certainly a possibility. Another sign of a bad canister is constant shut off from a gas pump as you try to fill the tank with fuel.

      Nope and in that case only if you turn it on for a while, if you do it off then you don't need it.

    I have a car puzzle mystery if any mechanics want to give me your input. There is a 2011 KIA Soul throwing a P0455 (large evap leak) code. We replaced the gas cap with an OEM KIA cap. I replaced the Canister Purge Valve solenoid. We ran smoke though it and saw no leaks anywhere. Took it to a Kia Dealership. They tested everything , bench tested the Evap canister , evap vent valve, gas cap , tested fuel pressure sensor and everything is checking out OK. But the P0455 code keeps coming back? The dealership said the Evap canister looks a little swollen but didn't show any signs of visible leakage. They said they could put a new Evap canister and evap canister filter on (which is 800 bucks) but cant guarantee that this will fix the problem. I was hoping that one of you on my friends list has gone through this or a mechanic might have a suggestion. Thanks
