Quick Easy Test For Stuck Open Evap Purge Valve

  • In this video I show a quick and easy way to test to see if an evaporative emissions purge valve is stuck open due to an internal mechanical fault. (The evaporative emissions purge valve is also known as a vapor management valve.)
    Step 1: Disconnect the vapor tube going to the valve at the valve. The particular tube that is needed to be disconnected will be the one coming from the evap canister to the purge valve. Typically the evap canister is located near the fuel cell. So this tube will typically run to the rear of the vehicle.
    Step 2: Start the engine and allow it to idle. This is important so that vacuum can be applied to the valve. !!! WARNING: BE SURE THE VEHICLE IS IN PARK AND THE PARKING BRAKE IS ON. KEEP THE VEHICLE IN PARK WITH THE PARKING BRAKE APPLIED!!!
    Step 3: Disconnect the valve's electrical connector. It is important to do this because the PCM may cause the valve to come on allowing vacuum to pass 0through the valve giving inaccurate test results. It is normal to have the PCM command the valve on. Also, if there is an electrical fault it could cause the valve to stay on allowing vacuum to pass through the valve causing inaccurate test results. A mechanically sound valve should not allow vacuum to pass through it when the valve is not commanded on by the PCM. Disconnecting the valve electrically helps with getting accurate test results by isolating the valve.
    Step 4: Place a wet finger over the opening of evap purge valve nipple. No vacuum should be felt. If so, then the valve is stuck open and is faulty. (Do note: in the case of a very small leak, special leak detection equipment may be needed. It's been my experience however, that 99% of the time if the valve is stuck open a leak can be detected in the manner shown in the video.)
    Definition of "Normally closed solenoid/valve": A solenoid that is closed when no electrical current is supplied to the valve.
    Caution: Keep all ignition sources away from work area. Fuel vapor may be present in tube and valve. Fuel is very flammable. Even with all sources of ignition removed from the area fuel vapor can still ignite via other means. Use extreme caution. Keep a fire extinguisher handy. Work in a well ventilated area. Do test at your own risk!
    Caution: Use extreme caution when performing this test. Beware of moving parts that could potentially injure you. Keep your members clear of moving parts. Keep loose garments and jewelry away from moving parts.
    Caution: Be sure the vehicle is in park and that the parking brake is applied before performing this test!!

    This is an easy, straightforward way to do a quick test. And a ding of a lot less than a Ford dealer will "hose" (pun intended) me for. If it IS stuck open, is there a danger in essential driving until the new one arrives? (2 days) I heard somewhere that it could fill the canister with gas. And that begs the question, if I don't want vacuum to the canister, can I drive with the hose plugged until the new valve comes? Thanx much for this. Hopefully it saves a trip to a high priced shop.

    Truck doesn’t turn over after stopping to get gas after long (cross country) drives. (Only starts if truck is left to sit for 20-30 minutes)
    Good starter, good alternator, good battery, no leaky injectors, fuel pump fuse is good.

    • @BarboursAutoHelp
      @BarboursAutoHelp  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      So when you say that the vehicle doesn't turn over, to me that means that it's not cranking. Is this what you are saying? The engine is not cranking? That would be what we call a "no crank/ no start" scenario. Now if the vehicle cranks but doesn't start then that is a "crank/ no start" scenario. A stuck open purge valve will not cause a "no crank/ no start" scenario but could possibly cause a "crank/ no start" scenario. But, it's hard to believe that the purge valve could be causing this and not setting a check engine light to come on. That would be one heck of a leak to cause that symptom.

    Question. My 04 mustang gt been sputtering when I give it alot of gas. And when you fill up with gas it kicks pump off and you can hear air. So I went to check the purge valve first and the vacuum line to the intake from the purge valve is collapsed. Took it off and it was still sucking but not alot. Put it back on and checked the one to the tank and didn't feel no vacuum from it. Kept it off and it still sputters when hard excellerating. Could it just be the collapsed hose? It still sucks but prob not enough

      It did shut off with the connector plugged in and the truck running at an idle. It shut of completely when I turned the truck off and tried to blow air through the valve. It was closed. When I disconnected the power it closed everytime. I don’t know if it’s related but I have two issues I am trying to resolve. First the tank will not fill with gas except a tiny bit at a time. Second there is a P0171 lean bank 1 code. I plan to swap the o2 sensors to see if the code switches to the other bank. The fuel I think my be the ball valve at the tank. Just my best guess at this point but I wanted to check all the parts. Also looking at the charcoal canister and valve.

      @@rexluongo6470 I'd suspect a possible "bad" evap vent valve or a restriction causing the refueling issue. A stuck open purge valve will not cause the issue with filling the gas tank. Also, if the purge valve is opening and closing with the vehicle running and the valve plugged in electrically then I'd say it's doing what it's meant to do. It's supposed to do that as the PCM commands it on and off. When is the last time the MAF sensor was cleaned?

    Is this part the same as a egr vacuum solenoid?

      @BarboursAutoHelp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It may work similarly but the egr vacuum solenoid and the evap purge valve are not the same part.

    I know they are in 2 different locations but are the purge valve and vent control valve the same part?

    Hello, Do you know why my engine is not sucking in air? It turns on and runs just fine. I am not getting no air sucked in even when I removed the purge valve. I tested the purge valve by applying voltage and it opens and closes. Thats when I realized that engine is not sucking in air regardless.

    I followed the steps and there was no suction, i plugged the electrical back in while engine was running, and it began sucking air, not sure if that was the right way, but either way i suppose i need to replace it now

    • @BarboursAutoHelp
      @BarboursAutoHelp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It will suck when it is connected if the PCM commands it to come on. That's why you test for suction with it disconnected. It should have no suction with the electrical connector disconnected.
