17:33 that is called ‘dark mast’ it’s a dark but definitely orange color. just a heads up, the masts are to be painted this color as well. Amazing model so far, I excitedly anticipate every post!

I know right! I was quite surprised by that figure in the kit. I’m deliberately putting them on the harder to see areas. No short skits on the boat beck!

Hi, yeah deffo need to start doing that. To be fair I’ve been having way better results with the airbrush than with the cans, but to be expected i guess!
@@TheModelBoatGuy thats to be expected. the atomization of an airbrush is way better than that out of a can. though there are a lot of other differences, a lot of ppl spray with way to high of a pressure and way to thick of a paint. if you feel the paint isn't silky smooth once painted, you are probably not thinning it enough. and if your having issues with overspray and bounce back, or orange peeling, then you have your pressure to high (there was a lot of paint mist flying around when you sprayed the inner brown line) so try experimenting on some scrap plastic and build up the layers. It will be an interesting build to follow for sure.
You are probably aware but I didn’t see it but you should put some microsol onto those decals. Makes the decal really conform to the plastic and gives a really good “painted on” appearance

@@TheModelBoatGuy I think it’s definitely much better than nothing. The decals will definitely come off when they become wet without any sort of protection. For my titanic, the microsol plus a matte varnish to seal it has made it inseparable.
@@mtshnitzel yeah deffo. Righto I have a bottle on order. I shall hold you personally responsible if it goes wrong! Jokes! As you say though, microsol and a good coat of matt varnish will give them a fighting chance.
I see many painting the tannish/gold color below the white on say the poop deck infrastructure/houses etc... But looking at photos of the poop deck of the Titanic it looks like a very dark tone (of course we only have b/w photos), but it looks much darker in real photos than a tan/gold would be. The Brittanic had that color later on in her career. Possibly some confusion there. Also there is a time period video of Captain Smith doing his last checks before getting under way. He had an all white uniform on with white cap. Love the figures though.

I quite like the colour I have gone with but it’s probably a bit too light! Re the captain Smith video I was under the impression that was recorded on Olympic? I didn’t think there was any footage of titanic other than the images at dockside in Belfast shortly after her funnels were fitted? Happy to be told otherwise though 🙂
@@TheModelBoatGuy Good article here on the color. It matches the color of the masts. www.titanic-cad-plans.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Dark-Mast-Article.pdf Captain colors, I was just going by what the so called expert was saying about the video. That it was the Titanic before it's maiden voyage. But is an expert of the Titanic really an expert? Heh. Some of the details are just a cloud in history. No big deal though, as he wore both. Just doing my own research currently before I start on my own.
Aah cheers for that, I’ll have a read. I’ve read some of this persons stuff before. He’s really thorough. I know re the crew and officers uniforms it’s hard to know for sure. I try and do as much research as I reasonably can but as you say at some point it does just come down to making an educated guess! No way to know these things for sure, what evidence there is has been at the bottom for over 100 years!
Hi, hope you had a good mini Christmas and New Year! The decks were definitely the right option and will look great with all the refined detail. Crew colours: Much the same as the Royal Navy at that time. Officers had gold buttons.....yeah OK skip that one in this scale! Able seaman wore black hats. Stewards wore white short jackets. Officers wore seasonal uniforms. In the winter peaked caps were worn with the white cover removed. However there could be a cross over with some wearing the white cover. Evidence suggests that the orders for the Titanic's maiden voyage a strict dress code was mandatory. In summer months officers would wear white uniforms on a given day much the same as they are today. I would leave well alone now that you have painted the caps white as it does indicate crew better. Some photo evidence can be misleading too as some photographs show named officers in caps with the white cover but they were probably taken out of context, who can tell! Most pictures are from the Olympic showing officers etc. Before you ask, no I am still waiting for some Scale the Titanic parts before I can even think about initial construction! Anyway great job so far, its starting to pop now, take your time with the tiny details! Regards and stay safe. JH :-)
Happy new year. Thanks for the info on the crew and officers. It’s been a bit of a minefield picking out what sources to trust and which to disregard because as you say, so many of the pictures are staged or taken out of true context. Yeah I’ll leave out the buttons! I have dozens of officer figures so I might paint a few stewards in white. It’s just occurred to me actually, as I have the KA set I have a bunch of spare lifeboats from the trumpeter kit. Do you want them / do you have need of them? It’s always a challenge for me as I get closer to the end to not start to rush! Once I’m back at work I’ll have far less time on my hands so less chance of rushing then!
@@TheModelBoatGuy Hi Rob, that's very kind of you but I am now in the same... err boat as you! I bought the KA too and kept the Pontos so I have enough of the 30 foot boats. I had to make a few of the smaller nested boats to fit inside the larger boats. Now with the KA as well I find myself rather flushed with boats! Thank you very much for your kind offer though. On further research (it never ends) I found that in the very late years of the Olympic's history not so many boats were carried due to the fall in anticipated passengers. So the boats carried in davits all became a bit random. Anyway you take your time with the details and stay safe at work too now what with this thing is becoming even more annoying. Luckily I live out in the middle of nowhere and at leisure so I see very few people by choice at the moment. Take care out there tomorrow! Regards JH :-)
Hi. I'm also using the fine detail scale decks and ka. Can I ask. Why use black spray paint before glueing down the decks? Simply for the light spread escaping under decks/bulkheads etc? I was concerned about any edges that may be showing after installing the scale decks and final fitting but it looks a nice snug fit. Any advice would be most appreciated. Cheers.
Hello, basically it is because the scaledecks are very very thin meaning they show whatever is under them. Some of the decks in the trumpeter kit are quite thick with is good for light bleed, but some are much thinner. Painting everything black first essentially removes any doubt in the issue.
