Sombra has a very sharp playstyle and it's important that you employ these 'rules of engagement' when playing in a Sombra comp! Many of you requested this one so I hope it helps! Let us know any other strategies that are giving you trouble or you'd like to know how to execute! -F
Your Overwatch I've pulled in about 150 hrs on Sombra and I could tell you from experience that what you've just described is that Sombra is a little too ultimate reliant. I agree with you in that Sombra needs to coordinate with what her team is doing but playing her over and over again revealed a pattern that her true value doesn't come about until her EMP at the beginning or the end of a fight where ultimate and ability availability truly matters. She's not mid fight capable or, at least it's really difficult to pull off. Master and Grandmaster play is where Sombra really shines because she depends on high coordination. And most people in those tiers know what EMP really means when it's activated. So often I go in and when my teammates need someone hacked or killed, there's like this weird 50/50 chance of me hacking them and my hack being interrupted. And I used 15 seconds worth of resources to accomplish nothing. That's where the perception of Sombra being a bad hero or a troll pic in the lower ranks comes from. You don't see any immediate value when switching or picking Sombra. You have to wait until her EMP, then she becomes valuable. She loses a lot of 1v1s because her damage doesn't cut it and hack becomes useless when the targets are looking at you. She seems OP on paper but there are certain situations that are perfect for her that make it seem that way. She only works on a very few certain maps, on certain heroes, for certain comps, in certain situations. Temple of Anubis just happens to be a perfect situation for her. I still want to see some more minor tweaks and changes for her to make her less ult dependent and more mid-fight capable.
Skye , I hear you. That's why Sombra really should be considered in the "not a stable hero" category, or "complicated" not "DPS" as the rest of them are mostly plug and play. -F
But TBH, on console 90% of playing is people NOT talking to each other, and everyone having to work with others without saying shit. It's literally not hard. But since doomfist you have one every game, and at least one Genji and Hanzo, with ZERO healer, and that's on 3000 sr.
Out Of Controllers Podcast but Rinehart and winter in can still shield a whole team from the dva ult but if u EMP its just an inescapable, uncounterable combo. EMP charges so fast that it is really worth it
Glad this is finally a video, because people don't understand how to work with me and refuse to listen to me when I say we can do certain things; certain health packs (such as temple of anubis point A, to the right of choke, the mini is very useful) are great for winstons or dvas to sit on and give her emp almost instantly. If people make a distraction, Sombra can get behind the enemy easily and hack a main tank, making an easy team fight for picks for her team. Also, sombra can fight a dva she's hacked solo, especially if shes near a hacked mini. ;) Today, had a game, for example, where I was told sombra is useless so someone decided to troll. I ignore them, and work around, talking to another and get my emp really quick while poking and getting the odd kill; we have a dva and they say bomb's coming up. I let THEM count down to when their bomb is, knowing I'm ready to translocate in any time, and that ult was game winning, because I let someone else time it, as, as you say at the beginning - sometimes it's hard to time it right when you're at the front. Also, If you have a grav, just use emp with it and let your entire team attack - emp charges so quickly it'll be ready 3 times over at least before the next grav is, and it means you have other ults saved for the next team fight. the enemies in the grav are just easy kills once emp'd. Also, defensive ults when you emp, if you're going to translocate in, are completely vital. Or you could invis behind them, then emp from behind, and translocate out if need be to begin on the next emp.
1.) Profusely say you're a support class. 2.) Start arguments in the team chat. 3.) Eventually get mad, then block everyone. 4.) "Coordinate" your ult with yourself, and get one kill. Maybe an assist.
Why are we under this false idea that sombra can't do proper damage? Her damage isn't as reliable as say a soldiers, due to spread, but if you play her properly you'll see the damage she can do
ALL DAMAGE in the game is relevant all the time, even low dps like Lucio and Dva (Sombra) are "proper damage" it all matters, but that's not the point at all. _Comparatively_ it is low objectively speaking due to a lower skill cap. Harder heroes have 2x-3x more dps. -F
Compare sombra to say, tracer (also a short ranged hero), damage output wise tracer has much higher damage. Sombra has decent damage but is outclassed by other dps characters. That's why she's a hybrid; where she doesn't do damage she brings utility. That's what makes her quite confusing to most people. Her damage is somewhat low compared to dps, but she's not made to heal. So to get value, you need to balance these and coordinate with your team.
+Bowen Wang If you have good tracking, she can do some potent DPS. It is not a joke. Just look at Codey when he mained Sombra in comp. Top 500 I believe.
This was eye opening, as support main I've been training that solo support/sombra style for a while, but It's difficult to get your teammates to agree to it, most of it because people still trapped in that infinite poking style from season 3. But this video really showed how to coordinate better with the Winston player! Thanks dude!
I bought Overwatch a few weeks ago and play mostly Sombra and the support characters; I think this guide will help, seems like mostly you need communicate with others players.
If anyone is wondering how to beat a Sombra healthpack comp, the way my team deals with it is to dive and fight on their health pack with high damage characters (Reaper, Junk, ect). Stops the tanks from fleeing for pit-stops in the way Freedo described. They cant actually stand their ground since the mega just cant outheal the damage coming in like an actual healer might.
So this is the channel that classified my babe as a healer... She's a huge flanker with healing capabilities. I don't care how pros play her, she's a high skill dps that can also bust some tanks while simultaneously disabling enemy abilities.
Best way I've found is to not bother being elaborate for a team, if they're in a good position to initiate or a team fight has just started, emp. Anything else gets too busy and confusing for solo queue. Basically expect nothing from teams because that's what you get playing Sombra most of the time. I use the same principle with Anna's nano, if someone is in a good position and jumped in I'll give it. No point debating in voice, just make the decision for the team
"Sombra is a support. Sombra is a dps. But I'm not wrong. So it depends on what slot you occupy in a team. Half support\half dps or half dps\half support."
Two things I'd like to add that I'm a bit surprised weren't in the video: don't solo EMP/EMP when your team can't take advantage, and if your Sombra has EMP ready to go coordinate with them to use it. Those are the two biggest things I've noticed playing Sombra, having an ally Sombra, and watching enemy Sombra. While EMP is great, the Sombra player can't get much value out of it by themselves because of the mentioned low DPS output. By the time it might take you to kill someone the EMP has either run out or the enemy has focused you. But if your team is behind you/with you, they can take advantage of it via ults or focusing. Sombra EMP is GREAT right now because it goes through and disables shields. But I also can't tell you how many times I've watched ally Sombras and enemy Sombras use their EMP alone when their teammates are miles away. On the flip side of this is the frustration when your team almost seems to refuse to coordinate with you (I've both experienced as well as seen). Getting on mic or using the ping wheel (group up, ult is ready) but your team never arrives, they go a different direction, etc. Even when I've gone back to rejoin the team and/or stayed with them the whole time to make sure they get to the engagement, I can't tell you how many times I've EMP'd/ally EMP and ally teammates don't do anything. Things like having a D.Va or Pharah or Junkrat ult, EMPing, taking down all the shields, and said teammate doesn't use their ult. Or don't even focus fire.
A really convincing way to play sombra is have an ana player hanging near the health pack and constantly commanding tanks to dip in and out of a max health pack (like first point attack on Horizon)
Reaper is good against Sombra. Even if you get EMP'd, yes you lose your Wraith Form, but you deal enough bulk damage in a team fight to still clutch it out. Just requires good aim and focus fire from your teammates to clutch out elims.
I'm a sombra main myself and it sucks that the community thinks that sombra is a throw character. I get a lot of hate when I use her simply because the team wants more damage. Coordinating with sombra is one of the best tools. Coordinating her ult with anyone that can do multikill is always dangerous.
I swear their view on Sombra changes every other week, but at least they are heading in the right direction. Now we just have to get FREEDO to realise that her name is pronounced 'Sombra' and not 'Soombra'.
Just remember, Sombra is NOT a support. It doesn't matter how much she heals, she is NOT a support. It gives the wrong idea of her, and changes the thoughts of how people perceive her. She's meant for the sneaky backline
sombra is op. I hope they repaired her SR issue. I mained her in season 5 and I was only able to win like 5 sr with her when winning matches for some reason
I'd like to play more sombra but when can I justify to my team that she's a good pick when I'm playing with gold and silver MM players who don't know how to play with one? Also are there times where you should just pick the hero you want to play (Sombra) against the wishes of your team and play them anyway?
don't forget to report your fellow Sombra one trick for abusive chat because she won't switch. Don't worry, blizzard doesn't check whether she actually said anything or not, they'll just ban her
Anybody else placed drasticly different than other seasons? I normally float around 2300, but after having a 4/6 W/L ratio, I finished placements at 2800! :D
Certainly the play style I do but teams lacking mechanically, refuse to and throwing because you go sombra rather prevents it flourishing in solo q. People moan about doomfist but he so straightforward unlike sombra who I think can be way more devastating. My favourite wipe with sombra when I play with my friends is emp, then earth shatter and then dva bomb. Hilarious hacking tracer harassing your team and watching her obliterated
Knucklepsy this is the problem with the community you cant tell someone to switch u can ask someone to switch if it's not working out or being countered
I dunno. I mean I'm at a shit rank anyway, but I could imagine that if you were in a diamond or higher game and just said; "Guys farm health packs" it would probably work out.
You guys do not understand. Console, in high elos is not the same on pc. Pharmercy is meta since triple tank meta. Is very strong. I play on pc and xbox. More than 800 hours I'm master in pc and master on console. And it's not the same game. On console, pharmercy is very op. Hitscan, dva, zeny... you can pick this things and you can't counter the Pharmercy on High elo
Um... as far as I know there aren't many heroes who are good against a skilled sombra player. Only junkrat, mei and possibly soldier can be good against her. Besides them she is at least a soft counter to all other heroes.
Why isn't there more Sombra and widow because Sombra hard counters everyone that counters widow and Sombra's ult is perfect for widow and widows ult seems pretty good for Sombra
1. Sombra and widow have a horrible reputation due to poor players, steep skill requirements, and Sombra's rough start. Having both on a team is pretty much going to make someone throw before they see if it's effective or not. 2. Widow's ult isn't that great for sombra. It's nice, helps her get into position, but she already has a little of it in that she can see low health targets. 3. Somewhat harder to coordinate, even though it's effective. 4. Damage can be a bit inconsistent. Widow has some problems with being dived or finding decent spots to fire from, while sombra has some DPS issues due to her spread, and generally has to get out of fights before her DPS starts to really add up. 5. To counter the people who counter widow, sombra has to keep in the general area of widow, which can be awkward due to her short range and widow's usual spots. If you want to defend the widow, you've got other options that will often be less awkward to use. TL:DR, it's not a bad combination, but has some holes, and will probably be far better with teammates who you know.

Your Overwatch i feel like im often distracted from what you're saying because of the gameplay. Could just be me though.
You could have just called the video "Why Sombra isn't viable in bronze"
You don't need to coordinate when ur hacking
Jeff Kaplan 😂
But TBH, on console 90% of playing is people NOT talking to each other, and everyone having to work with others without saying shit. It's literally not hard. But since doomfist you have one every game, and at least one Genji and Hanzo, with ZERO healer, and that's on 3000 sr.
How tf are you everywhere at once
lol
KimbitCake ikr
sombra+d.va+zarya ults at once
either the dream or the nightmare, *depending on which team it happens*
Mad Soldier XD I DONT GIVE A FUCK ABOUT YOUR TOP COMMENT this is funny
Mad Soldier there's no need for a sombra ult when u have a DVA and Zarya ult
Mad Soldier why are you every where?!?!! I have started too look under my bed before i sleep to make sure that you are not there!!!!
Out Of Controllers Podcast but Rinehart and winter in can still shield a whole team from the dva ult but if u EMP its just an inescapable, uncounterable combo. EMP charges so fast that it is really worth it
Nice ult economy
Like if you’re a Sombra main
As a Sombra main it's the best feeling when you have a dva ult go off and you ult to destroy barriers at the last second
Zach Crompton England is my city Me too! I love watching Reinhardt suffer
Glad this is finally a video, because people don't understand how to work with me and refuse to listen to me when I say we can do certain things; certain health packs (such as temple of anubis point A, to the right of choke, the mini is very useful) are great for winstons or dvas to sit on and give her emp almost instantly. Michael Wilkinson what rank are you i cant judge im gold now xdd
I'm plat, but for the period in which I was literally only sombra on attack last season, I got to diamond!
Thank you for this video! now I finally feel confident to try Sombra in my competitive games!
Me too man, I've also been watching this guy called Kyaami on twitch, super great Sombra gameplay!
AHAHAHAHA I DONT THINK PEOPLE GET IT AHAHAHAHAHA
Lol Kamii, you're already one of the better Sombra players out there, you're up there with Fitzy, Kataphrakt, Codey, Mightyy and Gray
LOL Kamii
Yea you should try out Sombra - she's great and im sure one day you'll be good with her
1.) Profusely say you're a support class.
2.) Start arguments in the team chat.
3.) Eventually get mad, then block everyone.
4.) "Coordinate" your ult with yourself, and get one kill. Maybe an assist.
Also the part where you blame other people for the fact your team lost and say it wasn't your fault since you had bronze healing
Why are we under this false idea that sombra can't do proper damage? Her damage isn't as reliable as say a soldiers, due to spread, but if you play her properly you'll see the damage she can do

Sombra and tracer do the same amount of damage in 3 seconds By the way, she doesn't have low damage
+Bowen Wang If you have good tracking, she can do some potent DPS. It is not a joke. Just look at Codey when he mained Sombra in comp. Top 500 I believe.
Daddypickle If you think Tracer and Sombra have even close to the same burst damage output then you must be silver
This was eye opening, as support main I've been training that solo support/sombra style for a while, but It's difficult to get your teammates to agree to it, most of it because people still trapped in that infinite poking style from season 3. can anyone let me know if my new stuff is any good/funny? :)
The short of the video, get her damn hacked Health Packs, and she should wait for her team.

Omg when he teleported to the dva ult going off and the video skipped. lol You know they didn't want to show what happened. :P

A positive Sombra vid from Your Overwatch. Hell has frozen over.
Great video! For my money, the shape hovering above teammates is closer to a chevron than a triangle.
i mean.... the EMP at the first clip was absolutely useless
"Sombra is a support. Sombra is a dps. But I'm not wrong. So it depends on what slot you occupy in a team. Half support\half dps or half dps\half support."
Thank you for making this, haven't watched it fully but I appreciate it.
seeing all of that grandmaster footage really convinces me i could play grandmaster as sombra.

Just lost a game of comp because of sombra than this video went up. Your Overwatch throwing confirmed?
Blazing Gamer trust me there's games like that you just gotta move on
OGsinatra Gaming or move down 200 elo
Blazing Gamer just a bad sombra that doesn't know how to play
I get the feeling that it wasn't just because of sombra.
A really convincing way to play sombra is have an ana player hanging near the health pack and constantly commanding tanks to dip in and out of a max health pack (like first point attack on Horizon)
I really wanted this guide cus i have been playing her so much
8:52 "good winston's don't need healing" *winston gets healed*
Sam Saraswat Yeah he contradicts himself like an idiot
THIS IS SO IMPORTANT NON SOMBRA MAINS PLEASE TAKE THIS INTO CONSIDERATION
It amazes me how after all this time, people still think Sombra is a troll character.
It's about time your overwatch covered symmetra
Reaper is good against Sombra. Even if you get EMP'd, yes you lose your Wraith Form, but you deal enough bulk damage in a team fight to still clutch it out. Just requires good aim and focus fire from your teammates to clutch out elims.
good timing on this considering rogue did a pretty good sombra strat against faze on volskaya today
How to coordinate with sombra: talk on the mic ;)
A D.Va got a 6 man kill with her ultimate in a grav and we would of survived with rein but sombra ulted
I'm a sombra main myself and it sucks that the community thinks that sombra is a throw character. I get a lot of hate when I use her simply because the team wants more damage. Coordinating with sombra is one of the best tools. Coordinating her ult with anyone that can do multikill is always dangerous.
I like that you pronounce it soombrah.
1. Tell people which health packs are hacked.
2. Use said health packs.
3. Call out when you're gonna EMP.
4.???
5. Profit.
Does anyone else think there should be a hybrid class rather than a debate between a character being a different class.
Mistake number 1, EMP didn't go off just before detonation.
I love teabagging agressive Sombras.
Force Gaming has gone mad with power.
Dear Blizzard, please give Hacked targets proper visuals, it's hard enough to see as Sombra, much less her teammates.
Seen title, guessed Freedo, now it's confirmed. Freedo the only one in the world who runs Sombra 😂😂🤣🤣🤣
*s* o *m* b *r* a
Can't wait for Mightyy to make a video on this 😊
stuff like this is why I sub
8:10 winston god carry during that whole game
S *oh* mbra
• Orphic • 😂
Just match Sombra's EMP wth Genju and 76's ult lol
Got so many team kills / quad kill with that
Nick Wong I've EMPed with Graviton and Nanoblade, but I think that is a bit overkill lmao
its so good because you can prevent lucio/zen/mercy from ulting, but even better nullify lucio's ult
Coordinate with my team? My team doesn't even allow me to use Sombra without saying I'm throwing
sombra can really punish poor communication and team awareness, more so than any other hero.
How to communicate with Sombra, advanced guide...
#1 Communicate
That is all
I can't trust these guys when it comes to sombra
I swear their view on Sombra changes every other week, but at least they are heading in the right direction. Now we just have to get FREEDO to realise that her name is pronounced 'Sombra' and not 'Soombra'.
Kirito.Roronoa 😂😂
Can u elaborate on that? what don't u agree with?
A few months ago, Freedo said that Sombra is a support, and it angered a lot of us Sombra mains.
Frostbite Gaming he said sombra can be used in the support slot as many pro players were doing at the time
I feel WoW raid team spells have a lot of meaning and are very tactful. Now does everybody do that, no.
Just remember, Sombra is NOT a support. It doesn't matter how much she heals, she is NOT a support. It gives the wrong idea of her, and changes the thoughts of how people perceive her. She's meant for the sneaky backline
And a clean engagement to you too, Freedo. :D
Stop throwing when you guys get a sombra on your team. She's so good. Just grab the hacked health packs constantly and follow up on her EMPs, free win
9:05 no no, Winston doesn't need healing at all xD
sombra is op. I hope they repaired her SR issue. I mained her in season 5 and I was only able to win like 5 sr with her when winning matches for some reason
I ❤️ Your OVERWATCH
Ah another vid on my favorite support
I'd like to play more sombra but when can I justify to my team that she's a good pick when I'm playing with gold and silver MM players who don't know how to play with one? Also are there times where you should just pick the hero you want to play (Sombra) against the wishes of your team and play them anyway?
Mighty is going to make a video about this
I really dont agree with how people look at sombra, i main her and she's just as good as anyother bps characters, you just have to be good with her
Junkrat = Sombra's #1 counter
don't forget to report your fellow Sombra one trick for abusive chat because she won't switch. Don't worry, blizzard doesn't check whether she actually said anything or not, they'll just ban her
Im def a healer main, lucio ftw, i def have fun healing n causing havoc for the team dps too mop up when i do play sombra
But how do you coordinate with the team when they start raging on the hero select screen for me to get off sombra before he game even starts?
808jayhawk you kill your own team. Who needs teamm8s anyways.
Basically: Play Sombra like you should have been doing for months.
...So what hero arent you guys good with..
Boss Floss Gaming every hero expect genji
Phara :v
Symmettra
Boss Floss Gaming hanzo
Anas normal aiming throws me the fuck off lmao, I'd say she's my worst hero
She counters the cheese comp
Great vid you did great, can I request an orisa guide next plz
For everyone saying the "sombra is/isn't a support" meme, the game devs themselves made, *S Y M M E T R A A S U P P O R T H E R O*
Anybody else placed drasticly different than other seasons? I normally float around 2300, but after having a 4/6 W/L ratio, I finished placements at 2800! :D
Rasmus Juul Svendsen Same here. Usually placed 2400. This season placed 2834 with an 8-2 record
Either you have less damage or less healing... or you just don't play sombra..
Atleast we haven't reclassified her as a support again...
I love sombra 😁
I always try to coordinate with Sombra but they just never switch off like I tell them. They're lost causes.
Knucklepsy this is the problem with the community you cant tell someone to switch u can ask someone to switch if it's not working out or being countered
Hey Your Overwatch, is sombra still a support?
enochh never was, never will be
Danky The Meme Lol Sombra is a support. Her kit is exactly like Zen, sets up oppurtunities for her team and heals while doing dps
+Ethyynol
you really need some help
remember sym? she's a support. i end my case
Sombra is really good when playing with a 6 stack that you actually trust. Soloq? Yeah I don't recommend doing that.
Amanda Santana I could agree with that. but when solo queuing a mic is absolutely necessary since Sombra is all about communication
I dunno. I mean I'm at a shit rank anyway, but I could imagine that if you were in a diamond or higher game and just said; "Guys farm health packs" it would probably work out.
Lukas Perveneckas Except Sombra has low DPS and no good abilities to help with fighting.
AV C i have been in Diamond so long but half games i pick sombra they dont even cordinate and or throw
Amanda Santana lol I have a 68% win rate on sombra and I only play solo q
Every time i pick her i get yelled at
They're not triangles. They're called chevrons.
Can you help me with a reaper positioning guide (post-changes in his passive) ?
I honestly think Sombra needs a nerf on her ult charge. She literally gets it like every 15 seconds and it's so annoying lol 😂
I'm sorry, but you don't say sombra sombruh, SOM-BR-A
'sombra switch'
I wouldnt pick her in comp but shes extremely fun in tdm
Where is the video of counter pharmercy on console? Where are still waiting. It's very op on console
freedom182 Widow and Soldier can shut it down if they've got decent accuracy. Also it can't do much if you win the land battle.
Dope intro!
So, Sombra is a Support? I mean, I don't know everything, but I just don't see it.
I made it to 3933 from 3534 in 2 days ;)
can u make a video about a Rein + Winston comp? I know it's rare to see but for some reason whenever the enemy team plays it, My team gets rolled
I'm early let me make a joke...
Eddy's Winston Aim
