Pros come up with some crazy strats and today we talk about how you can swap out heroes with different utility to the support slot. Thinking of spots being the way to pick instead of 2-2-2 is likely the way the game will develop in the pro scene and matchmaking in the future! Let us know what you guys think!
You guys really love to make these claims for the sake of making them do you? You realize now that people playing comp are just going to take your words as gospel and give the excuse that soldier is a support? What a way to help the community...
"Memes. Salty players. Mad soldier. Pro genji's. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the Mad soldier attacked. Only the TH-camr, master of all four elements, could stop them, but when the overwatch community needed him most, he vanished. A hundred days passed and my brother Sokka and I discovered the new Overwatch youtubers, and Pro genji named Lone hawk. Although his Coaching skills were okay, he had a lot to learn before he was ready to coach anyone. But I believe Lone Hawk can save the overwatch community"

If you focus only on the _identity_ of individual heroes you'll never understand the game. The identity's of individuals do not matter. Harry isn't on "DPS" he's on "Ranged hero with team healing" hybrid. He's not playing Tracer, Hanzo, Reaper ... he's playing one of the _few_ heroes that can fit into this comp, a hybrid every-man hero, Soldier. To call that '3dps one heal' is ignoring the point of WHY it works. It works because it adds healing, not _because_ it''s 3DPS, the healing is the crucial element.
Yes, the composition is a "single support" one, not a "soldier as a support" one.... Same with Sombra, she isn't used as a support, she DOES provide support with the hacked healthpacks, but the composition is still a "single support".
I'm glad you mentioned Orisa, she's ones of my favorite heroes to play Attack on this map (along with Reaper). She's great at breaking chokes and opposing Deathballs, like a Bastion with more utility.
Since I'm not a very skilled player, mechanically, these kind of tactical and strategic guides are more interesting to me. Thank you. Keep up the awesome work you do. This video will start a chain reaction that will result in people telling me to swap off Soldier because "we don't need another support, we need a real DPS".
The Lachesis and Atropos abilities are references to the Fates from Greek mythology (or Moirae - Moira get it?). Clotho spins the thread of fate, Lachesis measures it and Atropos cuts it.
I think you forgot to point out that giving heal with Soldier76 gives himself a shitload of ult charge. If you heal your team in a massive engage. You can charge your ult almost fully when you shoot at stuff. Thats pretty strong to have tacvisor almost every engage.
I've used soldier as a support before. It's really good when you're healers down or if your healers can't heal the tanks fast enough and he does good damage
this is weird but hear me out. A widow situates herself in the back to shoot the soldier and ana. A Reinhardt and a Torbjorn go to cart and set up a turret. a roadhog hangs back with an ana in between the widow and the Torbjorn/Reinhardt. The cart will provide crossfire to everyone but especially the tracer trying to attack the backlines (if you've ever played flank Torbjorn can be extremely annoying). The tracer then has to decide whether to put herself in danger and go after the rein/turret, face the roadhog and go after the ana, or most likely go after the widow. But because the roadhog is situated somewhat close to the widow, he can peel and hook the tracer if she goes for the widow, or if she goes for the turret he can do the same. Once the cart gets further along and the roadhog is keeping his eye out for the tracer, the soldier and the rest of the enemy team will most likely try to burn the rein sheild in order to get to ana and torbjorn. While that is happening (rather quickly most likely), the turret will hopefully be shooting the soldier or ana (if not it doesn't really matter). either way, the focus will be on the shield and the turret. This gives at least 4-5 seconds for the widow to land a nice headshot on the soldier or ana. and after that, the rest of the team can follow up, and a hook or two and the fight should be won. if not you can always wait for torb ult which is pretty good at dealing damage and cutting off sight lines. as for the sixth character it can be a support or even a pharah who can spam damge from a far, or when the time is right she can dive bomb the ana soldier and distract them for a second while the widow kills one or hopefully both. let me know what u guys think
Mr. Instakill No, as he doesnt have the reliable dmg like Soldier. Hitscan is way easier to hit consistent oer large distances than a projectile. But healwise, yes, agreed
+Your Overwatch Sorry if my first comment sounded rude but If you are serious then i might be interested, if you can link me a video or something to explain more about it i would be thankful
Yaziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii im pretty sure they themselves made a video on the subject. :)
Healing Soldier seems pretty cool, but it does have the problem of the frequency of the healing. You would have to wait for the cooldown of Soldier's ability.
Interesting video. I'm going to need to watch this through again and digest some of the ideas. It jives with what Harry Hook was saying about how he works with Ana as Soldier 76. The question is how (or if) this can be made to work with less coordinated teams.
If you're lacking consistent ranged dps, yes. Otherwise, probably not. Soldier was used because he makes up for the flaws of running Junkrat/Pharah or Junkrat/Tracer. They're too inconsistent and lack real range. This isn't so much a 2-2-2 comp, but a triple dps comp with tons of damage. Soldier does synegize really well with Ana though in both surviving a dive and combining ults. Hope that makes sense. :)
Jeez you peeps are on fire this week! Beautifully broken down, Freedo, I wonder if we'll see any of this on the ladder if not somewhere in Contenders next year. Keep crankin' out dis dank knowledge, fam!
If someone decides to go solo Zen as a healer or something, I like to pick Soldier and use his beacon to help out with the team's healing. It actually goes really well in some scenarios.
What people don't understand about ALL of your videos is that you are talking about team overwatch. Not solo queue overwatch. So when you say sombra can be used as a support people think you're stupid. Just want to say that there are some of us team overwatch players who appreciate your videos. Keep up the good work 😊
puppiez should have used bastion + duel barriers. Insta-wipes the enemies shields and anyone behind it, with enough barriers to protect him as long as needed from the pharah and junkrat.
I know it has nothing to do with the video, but since Blizzard is replacing Scatter Arrow I thought adding a Net arrow would be great. It would work by shooting a net arrow first, which opens like a parachute at a certain travel distance, like Roadhog's right click, and when the character is netted you shoot a second arrow where you want to fling the victim. So for example you net Mercy and send her flying off the cliff so she can be picked off easily.
Nicholas Rodriguez true, but Blizzard said they want a grabbing hero that was different than Roadhog so I thought it would be cool to have a Just Cause 3 hook styled grabber.
my favorite person to put in support that isn't typical is roadhog. typically if I don't feel like healing because my team sucks or deyre throwing or get picked too much or my team is desparate I just swap to hog and usually it works pretty well. a lot of times discord orb and reaper are the only hard counters to playing hog as a support
Pros only use Mcree in a "protect the president" type of team comp, therefore Mcree doesn't use any health packs which *basically* makes him a support. I can already see it happening guys.
Just a heads up to all the platinum and below's that will take this out of context: Envyus and EUnited are professional teams, HarryHook and boombox are professional players. Soldier 76 is not a DPS, pro players can sometimes use him as a support with the correct composition and strategy surrounding him, you, being a gold rank or something cannot use soldier as a support, and anyway you will almost never see 5 strangers willing to run that exact comp and strat. ill say it again, do NOT USE SOLDIER AS A SUPPORT UNLESS YOU ARE AT LEAST MASTER.
Trashy youtube hate aside, i really liked this video. It continued to explore the avenue opened by triple dps compositions other than the standard winston/tracer/genji + ranged dps
As much as I would love to see you break down Chips Ana play style on defense if you ever had the chance to, I dont think it would be useful. Not saying you would do a bad job of it, it's because new mercy is so god damn good and can heal so much now that Ana isnt as useful anymore. Whats good a nano or sleep dart when the thing that gets killed off those abilites can just be denied by the press of a button verses, building up nano or hitting the sleep dart. maybe im just skeptical but ana is being seen less the more i play comp and it saddens me since she was the only healer I had a lot of fun with.
Personally, I doubt it. Hanzo is very inconsistent especially in very coordinated play like this where he can't get the openings to get picks. Hanzo brings damage to a team, and that's about it. Honestly it's better to have a Soldier or as stated in the video Widowmaker. Hanzo is rarely seen in pro play, save a few maps. Granted if Zarya becomes meta Hanzo may see a bit more play. I hope that makes some sense.
5:18 he puts a trap and a mine above it , two seconds later his screen says TRIGGERED in a big red line, he decides to throw another mine near him not detonating the old one and getting a kill -_-
When ever i get to pay DPS in Comp i pick solider because of this! Sometimes i see teammates with low health and i just heal then while my healer is healing someone else.
Of course Soldier can be used as a Support. Eveytime I get him in Mystery Heroes, and there's no healer, we all cuddle up around that station like it's a fire in a cold, cold night.
I'll just link this when my teammates start telling me that soldier isn't a support and his heal is a joke. I hold no responsibility over what happens.
You can't really compare them... Korea played 2 dps on the defense you mentioned it is really solid and vs Envyus they were 3ple tank so it is not that the pick there was really great. Just the meta at the moment can allow triple dps or triple tank atm
Mei can and will support her team as well by walling them. She's simply flexing a support-role and keeping fellow team members in their spawn where they get constant area-healing.
Been dropping bio-nades every time they're available on a constant rinse n repeat since day 1 in competitive. If you have a Soldier you have to ask for healing from they're trash or noobs. Just run, gun, drop dem nades = Gold Medals For Soldier.
Well, you did day Sombra is a Support once before. Both Soldier and Sombra can heal, but the difference is that Sombra requires the team to take the initiative to get healed, while 76 has to be the one to take the intuitive to heal someone. It's too bad that most people will NEVER heal anyone but themselves as 76, because they need their comfort zone for themselves. And it's a bigger shame that people these days don't understand context or subtext.
Honestly, Sombra is a stronger support than Soldier. She has consistent healing and a powerful utility ultimate. Granted this is mostly viable on defense in a few given maps (namely assault and hybrid). When she is ran on attack she fills a dps role. Soldier, on the other hand, is not a valid "support." It's not the job of a Soldier to run to the point to heal teammates. These team comps are not a standard 2-2-2 with Soldier as a support, but a 2-3-1 utilizing triple dps. Sure the teams support player is flexing, but it's because those team comps don't require a secondary support. For example, with the EUnited comp in this video, Soldier was positioned away from his team on the high ground. He is not supporting any of his teammates in this instance. He was picked for consistent ranged dps which their team was severely lacking. They didn't require Lucio because they were playing a poke style team comp. Shoot tons of damage until they cripple! They managed to get the pick on the Ana which was the breaking point for Bazooka Puppiez. It's a really cool idea. In the case of EnVyUs using Soldier and Ana, yes the heal field benefits them both, but only because it's combined with biotic nade. It does add to the sustain, but this doesn't change Soldier's role, it's an additional synergy. It's Ana who is honestly doing the supporting, sustaining them enough to withstand a dive from the enemy. Yes, Soldier has a healing ability, but his positioning means it's rarely going to be used by the full team. This is a useful tool, but once again they picked him for consistent ranged dps, not specifically for the additional healing. Context does matter and although the support players flexed to Soldier in these examples, that doesn't necessarily equate to "Soldier is support." In my opinion this is a niche use and should be taken with a grain of salt.
Sombra is a healer, soldier is a healer, and with the upcoming patch all dps abilities will be removed from the game and be replaced with rez, nade, and transcendence.
If your team in matchmaking communicates and you ain't hard countered, it's quite a viable strat. Unfortunately the useless Genjis don't want to talk and try to 1v1 Winstons.
I feel like your overall analysis of what is taking place in the case of EUnited is a little off. Rather than saying Solder 76 is being used as a support I think its a better analysis to say that they wanted to run an aggro "Spam Comp" that runs 2 tanks with solo mercy. Understanding that the strength of the comp comes from heavy projectile spam, consistent dps from Soldier, solid solo healing potential from mercy with slight spam and increased health pool from Rein/Zarya....also spam comp with Grav is a guaranteed team kill. My point being, even if the support player is on Soldier i dont think its a fair assessment to say that a team is using him as a support....more of an aggro alternative spam comp. As for NV, honestly Harryhook is probably just most comfortable playing Soldier for when they want to run a solo healer comp as well. This allows Taimou to play anything the team decides they want to run. My $0.02.
Ask yourself this, why Soldier but not... Hanzo? There's a reason and it's because Soldier has _some_ utility besides DPS. Soldier > Hanzo because Soldier provides more to the team than just spam. Mei has been used 'as a support' too btw, already been done. Healing =/= support anyway.
FREEDO honest, why soldier? He's the single most versatile hero in the entire roster. Mobility, consistent damage, burst, self sustain. I think it's safe to say any 3dps comp SHOULD have a soldier. Whether it be dive, spam, etc etc.
The pinned tweet makes sense, the video title does not. Should have played the, "lets break down the advantage of running solo healer and using a 3rd dps(Soldier) in that "support" slot." angle. Its an oversimplification to say they use him as a support and undercuts your skills as an analyst. Trust me I understand what you mean, the delivery just didnt land for me.
You've defined support as meaning something less than it means. Also, NO OTHER non-Hybrid DPS picks can fit in that slot. What makes a hero hybrid? The fact they can fit in the support slot... The title doesn't make sense to you, because you have a rigid understanding of the game, aka an incorrect one. My explanation is the oppose of an 'oversimplification,' rather, to assume that solo heal mercy 3dps works at the pro level is a gross misunderstanding, no - you NEED a hybrid in the support slot for it to ever work. I could've called it 'solo healing' if I wanted to -- but that'd be wrong, even if you'd find it more palatable. Soldier is one of the acceptable swaps for a healer... It works, for the reasons described, try it next time your backline dies too easily. I don't like to mix my ftg with pros or else I'd show it, but I do this _often_ to great effect. Not swapping to a DPS, distinctly swapping to a Hybrid. Ignore roles entirely. Focus on how the TEAM; engages, heals, deals damage etc and you won't get hung up on false assumptions about the game. Heroes are too flexible to put them into one box, when comps/maps/modes change all the context surrounding it. Soldier is picked for the elements he brings to the _team comp_ here, not because he's just 'good at everything' (he's NOT good vs spam btw, he's horrible against it).
FREEDO tad condescending and imo still wrong. I'd love a pro players input. I may ask some. Like i said, i agreed with the theme of the video just not calling soldier a support. I even understood why you would play soldier and the fact that he is a hybrid is 100% the reason it makes sense but he is NOT A SUPPORT. He is merely filling what could be called the support slot. However i could make an entire analysis video on how they used Zarya as a support, she has shields and increases the HP pool of the team, arguably if they didnt have Zarya the comp would be 1-3-2 right? Ie....SUPPORT ZARYA.

Were you making a destiny reference with phalanx deathball or have i just been playing to much trials...
how PROS use Genji as a SUPPORT!
that should be next
Just a heads up to all the platinum and below's that will take this out of context:
Envyus and EUnited are professional teams, HarryHook and boombox are professional players.
I mean...if someone asks for healing, I will pop the diet soda. They always says thanks.
I've used Soldier as a support before. It's actually really fun.
How did that Winston double jump without primal rage at 0:45
That's an old meme but it checks out
Episode 1: Sombra is a support
Episode 2: Winston doesn't need healing
Episode 3: Soldier 76 is a support
Episode 4: ???
Episode 5: Profit
Would Hanzo be any good against the pincer comp? I find that good Hanzos are surprisingly dangerous for Tracer.
Big fan
Soldier is literally THE disc priest of overwatch
Don’t give the “Refuse-To-Switchers” any more ideas.
I've found that Sombra is usually good against high damage comps
Soldier is support. You heard it here first, folks. No one else would suggested it, but YourOverwatch does. At least they're original!
Just the meta at the moment can allow triple dps or triple tank atm
btw who is seagull going to replace?
Next: why genji needs healing
Next video: How pros use Symetra as a support
brace for "we already have a lucio, soldier can be a healer too don't worry"
Mei can and will support her team as well by walling them. She's simply flexing a support-role and keeping fellow team members in their spawn where they get constant area-healing.
I counter widow with junkrat often enough... With pharah as well. When she's scoped she's not seeing what coming from above.
Can someone explain what a deathball is? I've heard it alot but I'm not sure what it really means
Next video : How pros use WINSTON as a SNIPER!
Oh no first sombra now soldier
can you do a video on the 5 tanks 1 lucio strategy that some team ran not too long ago?
next video can you explain how mercy is the best dps in the game? nano Valkyrie is nothing to scoff at
i really don’t need a video explaining how to throw down a heal at the right time
Been dropping bio-nades every time they're available on a constant rinse n repeat since day 1 in competitive. If you have a Soldier you have to ask for healing from they're trash or noobs. Just run, gun, drop dem nades = Gold Medals For Soldier.
How PROS use Mcree as a HEALER next??
Viqtor no, genji as a healer because he can reflect ana's shots
When the game has so few healer supports that an offense hero is being used as a support, feels bad man.
"Team, heal up here."
Makes you wonder what everyone thinks of that.
I don't get how people say 76 is a noobish hero, he is easily the most tracking intensive hero in the game
Yay I finally get to comment and show my support to your channel! I finally have a YT account, just want to say keep up your work!
Next up: How PROs use Symmetra as a TANK!
For the record
It's Chips-high-yen. I'm not even Swedish and Chips-ha-jen hurts my soul every time I hear it.
So it's a 13 minute video where it could just be a 3 second video of him he can heal
Jury's still out on Soldier's tanking capabilities.
