great chose longer barrel is what the 45 70 needs. faster bullet speed, less recoil, and much better for open sights. Nice to see some goes for what counts instead of the Cool factor. of having a Guide Gun. I also looked up the bullet drop for the barrel lengths and the difference in drop makes me wonder why any one other than a guide would want the short barrels.
I bought my “G” after reading the full page ad in Outdoor Life. Still in very fine like new condition and is in hand when I go into the woods and swamps. This rifle inspired me to handload 16 years ago.
Happy to report that Remington got it's act together by 2018. My rifle has very nice fit and finish and after a little deburring of the action, it's as slick as butter
2015 Marlin 1895 sitting on my bench looks terrific. Has nicely figured walnut, laser crisp checkering, nice blueing and overall fit and finish is superb. Haven't torn it down yet to inspect inside but the action is slick. Absolutely no complaints but haven't fired it yet. I think bashing the Remington era Marlins is likely deserved but much overblown. The good news is they still fetch a premium these days.
I once read that a ported rifle gets the guy next to you at the range more interested in your shooting than he wants to be. That being said, I bought my ported GG in 2003. Bears and deer have succumbed to its bang! Love it!

I worked at the Cabelas Gun Counter for several months in Barrie, ON. That’s back in 2014. Many Remlins passed s through my hands while setting up displays and helping customers. There were a few goofy ones. When it came time for me to buy my own Remlin 1895 GG, my mates over the counter handed me the first out of a stack of boxes. I was pleased with the fit and finish and alignment of sights. I shot it many times but really wanted a big loop upgrade. I should have done more research. The BL version of the Guide Gun was coming out around that time. So I sold my Guide Gun and bought a GBL. I was pleased with that. Then I wanted a Stainless GG BL. Ha ha ha the journey down the rabbit hole began. 7 years later now... I have an August 2018 made 336 BL with Laminated stock and a most beloved 1895 GSBL in OD Green painted Birch wood. This GSBL is a December 2017 made Remlin and it’s absolutely perfect. Thanks Marlington. Hahahaha I am loving the FNC (Ferric Nitro Carburizing) treatment on the stainless steel. It sure beats the blueing for more outdoor adventure abuse. Oh BTW, both these rifles were bought online from stores far away from me (a good day’s drive) and were sight unseen. I took my chances since many Remlin owners were agreeing that recent production rifles were better made these days. And I have to agree with them since I have NO JM Marlins in my collection; just the 2 Remlins that I’m loving reloading and shooting. Life is good. Stay safe and stay strong, my lever gun fan boys!! Tip: When loading the magazine tube, Don't push the round in past the loading gate. Stop with the cartridge rim holding the gate open, then use the next round to push the previous round into the mag, leaving that round to hold the gate open for the next round. KISS...
It would be cool if you could do a picture in a picture; mainframe of you and the rifle and small frame of the target. All I can really see in the background is the dust rising and don't necessarily know what the intended target is or where your shot landed. Congrats on owning a JM!
Yeah man...saw Hickock having so much fun with his Guidegun that when I got the chance to pick one up at a good price I had to go for it. Min e is a newer model (2017?) But fit and finish is spot on and it's a great shooter. Be careful with those HSM bear loads...guy at Marlin said it's a no go on plus p ammo in these 1895s.The finish on your cannon looks amazing btw...
This may not be a JM Marlin after all!! It has a cross bolt safety and the Remlins started putting cross bolt safety’s on their rifles in 2015!! It is a JM stamped barrel assembled to a Remlin lever gun!! They sell these lever guns as used because they have the JM barrels instead of being a full Remlin with the Illion, New York stamped barrel!! Remington took over Marlin in 2007!! So his rifle was made by the Remington people!! I have a so called Remlin! A 2019 1895 CBA 45-70 18.5” barrel 6+1 and it is beautiful!! and wonderful rifle in every way!! The fit, finish, lever action smooth, and function is excellent!!
I have two Marlin Guide guns in two different calibers. One that is stainless, ported barrel in .45-70, . The other one is blued ported barrel in .444 Marlin and both are original Marlins. I am looking for one in .35 Remington next. They are great rifles. I like them better than the other brands out there.
My first lever action so can you tell me the reason for half cocking the trigger before firing please? I have mine hot with the trigger pulled all the way back. New to this rifle.
Ported barrels aren't really loud compared to a muzzle brake. My thompson pistol is ported in the .45-70 and is a lot quieter than my Ruger made Trapper that has a muzzle brake on it.
I've had the same weapon since it came out in 1998, grabbed the 1st one I could. I dig it. Try the PMC (if you can still find them) 350 gr semi-jacketed flat point +P+. Accurate. Within its range limitations. Aaand... You want recoil? Muzzle blast? Recoil & muzzle blast ye shall have! Listed on the box that they are SPECIFICALLY designed for this weapon. No Trapdoors. Have to put a slip-on recoil pad on her for those, that also helps lengthen the somewhat short buttstock if you have long arms (like me). Fun, & effective gun.

If you don't mind me asking I'd sure like to know how much it cost used? Just ball park cost, I'm not trying to get in your business. I had a Marlin 336, over 20 years ago, bought used in a Texas gun show. Had some land in central Texas back then and killed a whitetail with it. One shot center of chest from the front 80-90 yards off hand and it dropped out of sight too quick to see. The 30 caliber with that flat front end really smacked hard. Eventually sold it to upgrade to a 308 Rem 700 with a Leopold gold ring 3-9 scope. Anyway I always looked back at the blued/walnut 336 in 30-30 and thought, that was a nice gun it's just done right. The 700 was nice too but in a different way. The 336 had a 4 power scope on it when bought and I used it as it was. . Now for a while I've got a desire for a 45-70 Marlin. Texas has a hog problem and some of those hogs are big! The Marlin''s a fine looking rifle, I had a Winchester 30-30 also but the Marlin is better for a number of reasons. roaddogrichard No worries and thank you for commenting....I think I paid $500 or $550 for it. I remember paying about as much for this one as a new one off the shelf cost at that time, but I wanted a pre-Remington JM stamped rifle.
The original recoil pad is usually pretty hard (called the "brick"), I have one and put a Decelerator on it (Pachmeyer) and you can shoot it all day...soft. Mine is old enough that it is NOT a Remlin!....Told my wife to bury it with me...with open sights get 1 1/2" groups.....

I have owned many guns, from 200 to 2000$. All needed some work or surface polishing to make them really smooth. To me, that is part of the fun. 45-70 is a very effective and powerful cartridge but not painfully powerful. If you think about it, a 45 cal muzzleloader can be loaded as heavy as 45/70 but most muzzleloaders are 50 cal. and can be loaded very hot. Your video was Ok, but mostly focused about RECOIL! You look like you should be able to handle that?? It's about like a 20 ga. shotgun.
My 1895 Cowboy is a JM but my 1895 Guide Gun is a Remlin. The Remlin's wood to metal fit and finish is not as good as the JM! Safe shooting and I do love the old 45-70!
why a guide gun other than the cool factor, the 45 70 should have a longer barrel to burn all the powder the case holds and get max from the round. Guide guns were used for back up or close range bear attacks not general hunting, as the longer barrels will give faster bullet speeds and flatter shooting witch is needed for the heavy bullets of the 45 70.
idk about you guys and gals. but once i get the mods i want on 1895G i will make it my E.D Cary rifle. instead of my AKM or AR LE6920. Guide Gun too 3 favorites from my collection. im confident in my rifle. Enough for a fight if it came down to it.
The JM models have weaker chambers so you may have to watch out what ammo you shoot! The newer Remington made Marlin’s can handle anything you load it with because the steel in the receiver chamber is much stronger than the JM models!!
Ummmmmmm, that's simply not true .... that's urban myth. That's an attempt by Remlin owners and Cerebus promo scam artists (now extinct thankfully) to up the perceived value of their Remlins. Here are the facts. The Marlin leverguns, ALL of them, are rated to 40,000 C.U.P. maximum pressure units. The Ruger #1, Browning 78s, Wickliffe etc are rated for 50k c.u.p. .... +P doesn't mean jack squat. What matters is that that C.U.P. rating when it comes to 45-70 .... like the trapdoor, it's only rated for 25k c.u.p.

This rifle made by Remington is wonderful in the metal to wood fitting, the function beautiful and also the walnut butt stock and forearm is spectacular!! Stop the non sense with the JM Marlin fanboy stuff!! The newer Marlin’s can shoot the more higher pressure loads that the JM model Marlin’s can’t!!
hi y'all, I had a marlin for bout 2 month's, a 45/70 GBL, must have been a Monday morning put together, whatta piece of crap!! an the ammo ran from 55-65 an up from there for a box of 20, that went the way of the dodo bird , now I'm shooting a cz527, an it only cost bout .40 cents or less per shot, I had my share of problems with marlins, no more for me,shakyjake out!

Had 2 of each in both blue steel & stainless. The "Guide" SUX!! Get the regular 1895, smoother, shoots furthur, faster & more accurately. Thoes extra few inches of bbl makes ALL the difference. The "porting" on the guide makes it earsplitting louder to w no real advantage. The guide was designed to fit under the seat in small bush aircraft in case of crash. As an EMERGENCY bear rifle. Only thing worse is the Marlin 450. The redesign of the cases make it have ejection problems. Just a failed marketing ploy. The ORIGINAL 1895 Marlin is time proved & an outstanding rifle. Can easily handle "hot" loads. I know, lived Alaskan bush for 27 years & my regular everything gun was the 1895. Sold BOTH my guides to suckers.
I had..noticed I said "had" this same gun. New off the shelf last year it was the worse gun Ive bought yet. Jammed, failure to feed, failure to eject, crappy tooling and fit of the stock..a very poorly made gun from Marlin. I sent it back 3 times and each time it came back more messed up. Needless to say Marlin has lost their integrity and it is a known fact. I gave it another chance and I now have an 1895 GBL- The loop is larger and it holds an extra round. Same receiver--It is a little better although the screw that holds the barrel/magazine tube together is the thickness of half a toothpick. It snapped needless to say after shooting the monsterous 45/70 Gov. round. Marlin...you suck.

And on that short carbine, the ported barrel really helps with felt recoil and re-aquiring your target.
Keep enjoying. Get into reloading and you'll bring your cost of shooting down by about 80%. That makes it even more fun to shoot.
Just picked up a remlin today for 399!! Best thing ever. It is as well made as my jm 30-30. Quality has gone waaaay up.
I shoot at a loud indoor range and always run foam plugs under my Howard Lieghts.

nice guide gun u have there. I just recently bought an 1895 abl. beautiful gun. only complaint I have is I wish the checkering was better. o well tho.

That's a nice rifle. Just the porting is not so great.. If you take it afield without ear protection you won't enjoy the porting long.

Im sorry you had a bad experience. It seems Marlin has taken a turn being owned now by Remington.......the quality is just not there....
