Nice to finally hear from others outside the US to give a review of this gun. I bought one, the last year that Remington owned them before they went bankrupt. I have not had any problems with this Gun. Last year deer 🦌 hunting I shot a scruffy ( basket rack) 6pt buck at 300 yards open sights. Absolutely recommend this .45-70 Gov't.
I recently purchased a Henry lever action chambered in .45-70. Having a ball shooting it. Actually quite a bit funner than my AR-15s. Ammo is very expensive though.
Reload
Do u know how much that brass is worth reload my friend
Well, I do fancy one. So I’ll be picking mine up next Saturday. Cheers.
Stunning gun. Would love one.. Never noticed Dinosaur hunting on the variation form for my fac tho so will have to come up with another reason and probably a small overdraft for the ammo.
When you see guns like this you can see why our cousins across the pond end up with huge gun collection s. I wouldn't be able to resist 🙄
Great review
Thanks for this 👍❕️
Thanks Chris, this was a great review on a beautiful rifle. I live in Australia, these new Ruger Marlins are very hard to get. Thanks for making these videos, I have always found your reviews to be really helpful. 👍🇦🇺
Thank you, please share them around, more views equals more reviews!
A 400 grain flat point for a classic wild boar drive hunt would be my first choice 100%
Love it although I've ordered the blued version the Guide gun. It's basically the same rifle overall just blued without the rail. Nice shooting, Thanks for the nice review. 👍
Excellent video. Glad Ruger saved Marlin. I have several actual Marlin rifles. All great guns. The ones made by Remington were not that great. I do want one of the new Ruger made Marlins. Thanks for the review.
When that statement is made that means you never shot a Remington made Marlin 1895. The only less than perfect lever guns with the Remington stamp on them were the ones made using J.M. Parts Remington inherited from J.M. from the buy. This was between 2010 and 2015. Starting in 2016 Remington no longer was using J.M. Marlin parts they re engineered all the Marlin lever gun parts to be made on new close tolerance CNC machines. This Remlin baloney needs to stop. Because it’s J.M. Marlin parts that Remington got thy were left over from the buyout and J.M. Workers assembled them. In 2016 everything Remington Marlin was all Remington. And Marlin made by Remington starting in 2016 we’re the best made Marlins ever!! Look into the major problems Ruger 1895 Marlins have had already. Bolts riding on top of hammer all the way through the whole lever gun racking cycle? Bad!! Fluted bolts, Bad!! Enlarged iron sights Bad!!
@@kevinrollman3101you have no clue what you’re talking about 😂 and it shows. Remi Marlins were trash. I had two and both were duds, one had finish issues brand new out of box, stock had scratches, the other the stock was off from the actual frame of the firearm and was jagged. They were thrown together with absolutely no regards to quality assurance. Remington was just pumping them out to make money without a care in the world.
The new marlins by ruger are leaps and bounds better. Smooth, nice finish, definitely smoother lever action, it’s almost like glass, straight shooter.
Stop being silly because you bought a remi Marlin and wanna hype it up 😂
@@The_PaleHorseman I sympathize with you about your experience. Between the years 2010 when Remington assumed J.M.Marlin and till about the end of 2015, the Marlin lever gun parts were all J.M. Marlin, and assembled by disgruntled former J.M. Marlin workers. This was because they were losing their jobs!! They destroyed some of the production machines and trashed schematics of the lever guns. In 2016 Remington started making their own Marlin lever guns and the years after that were Remington produced Marlin lever guns. This is after Remington moved to Illion, New York,
Re engineered all the lever gun parts and manufactured them on brand new CNC machines capable of very close tolerances. So if your Marlin lever guns were dated before 2016, this is why you had a problem. J.M. Marlin’s quality was way down before they sold the Company to Remington. From 2010 to midway through 2015 Remington was selling the J.M. Product they inherited from J.M. Marlin Company. The Remlins were all J.M. Marlin. I got my info from Rifle Magazine, and Shooter Magazine. Because the author of one of the articles tries out J.M., Remington, and Ruger lever guns. And wrote a lengthy write up on this subject. He did not shoot any of the Remington made one’s before 2016. Because he knew they were J.M. He did say that the quality of J.M. Marlins were going down hill when they sold to Remington. He said the bores on the J.M. Models were poor quality, deep tool marking on the lands. He said that Remington made barrels were the best of all three Companies. The blueing on the Remington barrels and sides of the chambers were the same as Ruger and both were better than Marlin J.M.
He said out of all the ones he tried, Remington and Ruger were the most accurate. Also the trigger pull weight was best on the Remington made models. Remington on the 30-30’s 4.25 lbs.trigger pull. Ruger 7.25. Ruger 1895’s 6.25, Remington 4.25. I am not being silly, my 2016 Remington made 1895 CB 45-70 is an excellent lever gun. Again I don’t know if the ones you bought were before 2016, it would be worth checking out. Sorry that happened to you, seriously.
That’s a nice rifle. Nothing wrong with the grouping either. Might see you at the show. Going Saturday
Great review. I’ve just bought a Remington made Marlin 1895 Dark series in 45-70. I was reluctant due to the reputation regarding quality of some of the early Remlins. Mine is perfectly fine. The later made ones are fine, but unfortunately the brand was already tarnished where hysteria took over about any Remington made Marlins.
Great review!
Hi Chris, really enjoyed your video review of the Marlin. Can you tell me what brand & height of quick release rings are being used with the Leupold scope? Asking because I plan to pickup one of these soon only difference is I plan to go with the 1-6 Leupold VX-6HD.
Thanks for any info you can provide--cheers!

I have the pre Reminington 45-70 SBL . Great to shoot and very well made . Would like to try the new ones just to compare .
My son has a pre Remington SBL too and I have just ordered a new Ruger manufactured one. I also have an early 80’s 1895s as well.
Awesome video mate. Very nice rifle.
Great review, and nice shooting. What make and model is your scope?
Those are some big pills. I would appreciate that big rubber butt pad. The wood stock looks good and I really like Leupold glass. I didnt know Ruger had aquired Marlin. Kudos.
Damn that’s one good looking smoothe action gun right there!!!! Imagine how smoothe everything gone be after a couple hundred rounds a clean and good oil whether it’s car oil synthetic or gun oil and she’ll be ready to go!!! I prefer running engine oil synthetic oil in my firearms but i was using frog lube prior which seemed to be good stuff n itt lasted awhile and created a permanent slippery feeling like it said it would
Nice review, super interesting to see the uk perspective on this so very American gun. One thing to note is since you guys are going lead free is that the loads you were shooting are on the mildest end of the scale (they are close to the original loading from 1873 in performance). Common leadfree loads are 250gr going ~2000 fps, the recoil and muzzle energy on these goes up a lot. They expand very well though, even at low velocities.
Definitely something that benefits from hand loading, not only for the price ($3.5-4 a round here for the better ammo as opposed to less than $1 for a hand load ) but also because you can dial in the exact performance you want. The case is enormous as it was a black powder round originally, I have a box of 225gr lead free that advertises 2800 fps on the box. They hit hard on both ends of the rifle lol.
$4/round? I’m seeing 2.15-2.50 online
@@joenoonan762 sadly I am in California, so online is not an option for me. The only lead free I have seen in stores in months (when it is rarely available) is Buffalo bore, which hurts your shoulder and wallet simultaneously. I had picked up two boxes of hornady sub x right before writing this comment 6 months ago, and those were $70 a box. Since then almost no 45-70 in stores here except an occasional box of leverevolution which I dislike because the difference of brass length. Fortunately I roll my own mostly. 🤷♂️
@@ericc3327o wow I didn’t realize California can’t order online
If you reload with Barnes 250 grain copper bullets the maximum Barnes data says the velocity that can be attained is 2,600 fps! I hunt with that bullet at 2,500 fps. Thor's Hammer.
I want one for elk hunting, but the SS finish looks like there is too much glare?
I plan on buying this in the future.
I don’t trust ruger’s webpage to purchase this new relic.
But, you guys should have a webpage where we can purchase one of these weapons without getting robbed.
Tell ruger, i don't work for them
Want one 🤤
I’m buying one this year
SBL stand for Stainless Big Loop!
Not Stainless Big lever Laminate
Crikey Chris that kicks like a mule 😂. Great grouping. With a LPVO could it be a wild Boar gun ?
You could but it wouldn't be my personal choice, too limited given the likely quarry quantities, multiple species and range variation
DEFINITELY Appreciate the way you hold a Lever Rifle correctly on a bag/bench/rest,....or any wat for that matter.....just about could use a leather cheek riser it appears. You handle the recoil well, imo, for what it's worth, you are a good shooter behind some recoil - good to see,....some gootoobers are are horrendous to say the least.
Thank you
Debating between this or a Henry only problem is I cant find 45-70 ammo anywhere
How do you removed the rear sight?
The "L" in sbl isn't laminate it's stainless big loop
It looks like the 1.5x5x20 leupold vx3hd. Question is what height rings are u using here and does the rear sight have to be removed. I am wanting to do the same set up. Thanks and great review
Long gone
Understand. Was hoping I might now. Thanks and all the best
Hard hitting..
What scope is that ?
What a rich men😀 he shot a complet box empty😂
Personally, I’d rather loved to have one like this, practically the ammo price is heavily reduced my will..😂😂
Serious combination looking at those groups
Only 50 metres norris!
@@chrisparkin431it’s not a PRS rifle, it’s a woodland rifle so 50m is perfect.
I want one so bad! They are hard to find though.
I got both the SBL and the Dark series
Just picked this up yesterday in Florida $1922.00 after tax ammo is everywhere
What do you think about it ?
My hand loaded 400 grains are 1800 fps
What ammo are you shooting
I just saw what it was sorry
Nice video. My Marlin arrives in few days, can't wait for that. A question regarding S&B ammo - how does it work for hunting? My Marlin is going to be dedicated for hogs hunting, and I do not have the best experience with Sellier and Bellot in .308. Is it OK in 45-70?
i have looked it up a ton and it is fine for big game up to 200 yards
These are popular in the US. What would it be used for in the UK?
Target mainly but I'm sure a few people desire them just because they are perceived as large, powerful and unusual.
do you not have big game to hunt there?
@@Fastdonkeynads maybe big stags in the uk but it would not be my choice anyway and if I went to Africa, there are better options. It's a 'historic' cartridge in my opinion
What kind of hammer is that on your 45-70?
It's not mine
Model of scope please?
A Leupold VX3 of some variant if memory serves but I cant remember specifically, it's months ago, sorry.
Collect that brass
It's huge and not hard to see on the ground
405 grain bullet in 1400 feet is a very slow load. Fabric ammo producers need to hold the speed back because they never know what type of rifle the customer will use the ammo for. When you reload yourself these kind of 405 grain bullets travels out of the 1895 barrel in approx. 2000 feet per second. Then you understand Newtons law :) I have the original Marlin 1895 SBL, with JM stamped barrel and I love it. But you have to reloade yourself ...
.....shoots like a target rifle !!!
It's only 50 metres remember!
What’s the longest you can shoot with that rifle
@@DarkSideOfTheGame22 3-5 miles is the usual safety estimate but id err shorter on this one
@@Learning5515 for practical purposes 200 yards. Even at that range you’re looking at ~8 inches or 25cm of drop for a typical load. There are people who take these out farther for sure, but it becomes a very specialized skill very quickly.
Only thing wrong with that gun is that they put a picatinny rail on it
need to trim your nose hair
😂
