Yep. Same thing happened with '06. I believe the original level designers helped make Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8. In essence, Super Mario Odyssey was the best 3D sonic game of last year, =Y
They didn't "Frankenstein the Lost World engine into a new boost game engine." They created an entirely new engine that has so far ONLY been used in Sonic Forces. It doesn't even use any of the mechanics that were introduced in Lost World, like the flying kick, multi-homing attack, the run button, or the more robust parkour system.

Man, it took me awhile to get he hang of these as I avoided these levels in the old games. I do wish that bonus levels from other games were included as well. I think that rotating through the various bonus levels from the past games would have been great. I also hope that Mystic Cave Zone is in Mania 2.
Personally, I think they should try to just stick to 1 or 2 solid formulas. I mean, the Classic Sonic style works well, and Boost is decent enough. If experimenting needs to take place, then it should be something less drastic (like say, a 3D sonic without boost gameplay and relying on momentum and a few "nonscripted racing" physics).

Luis Andion well Sonic Team Japan has on record stated that they’re going to throughly exam Sonic Mania and try to apply its design philosophy into 3D because of how well the game impressed them. Iizuka was also the one who allowed the project to be made in the first place. Given that Mania was the first game under Iizuka’s making LA the development hub for Sonic statement (since he served as producer and level design supervisor for Mania), one can only hope for good things to come. Like maybe keeping the Mania team around to handle 2D games and maybe having a circle of devs make games instead of cramming it on just Sonic Team. Seriously Sega, you own Atlus, a studio known for making critically acclaimed jrpgs. Since a Chronicles sequel is dead make an original Sonic rpg.

The frustrating part in chemical plant is taken from the real chemical plant zone in sonic 2. It was put in the game because it's such an iconic section, for better or for worse.
5:49 Uh, Caddy, you can literally see which platforms the boss grabs before those platforms fall. So the answer to how you do that boss properly is, "jump onto a different platform." *facepalm*
Honestly, I think that point was more subjective than anything else. I know that this is primarily about his experiences with the game, but still. I had issues with that boss my first couple times through, but now I can plow through it pretty quickly.
That boss gave me trouble when I first played the game but after that the patterns became fairly obvious and I usually don't take a hit when I fight him nowadays.

It is like a lost timeline Classic Sonic game, from either the end of the Genesis era or the beginning of the Saturn. What would've happened if we didn't go 'modern'. At least that's how it feels to me.

Absolutely love this game. Although I still prefer Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Sonic 3 and Knuckles had a better story, better atmosphere, and just has a special place in my heart.
As much as I love S3&K, the refined gameplay and level design, qol improvements, along with the amazing soundtrack and overall presentation are so GODDAMN STRONG in this game I had knock it down a spot.
Same fam. The only reasons why Mania hasn't replaced S3&K in my heart is that it isn't entirely comprised of original stages, no special stage grinding for hyper sonic, and no Mecha Sonic appearance (the reference during the red beetlebot boss fight in Knuckles story was neat though). =Y

There's a reason why we Sonic fans are so die-hard despite Sega being asshats with the games they make. Growing up Classic sonic games were so great, so different from any other games at the time. Yeah, sure they're flawed in a lot of ways but I chalk that down to it being the 90's and game design wasn't as much of a science as it is today. I feel hurt, betrayed even by Sonic Forces because I feel like it was designed solely for the sake of marketing and accessibility. they just threw together everything they THINK Sonic fans want like Classic Sonic, Shadow, Edgy story and music, and for some reason they think we don't want to actually PLAY the game. Lord knows we don't buy games to PLAY them! we just wanna look at the pretty graphics and hear the sounds and feel good about doing things that are all automatic anyway!! AND you have to BUY super Sonic! Fuck you Sega! ...but Sonic Mania kind of makes up for it. I mean it KNOWS what makes a Sonic game good. Forces THINKS it knows but it's like a marketing robot made it!
Then again, between Sonic Team trying so many things over the years (including trying to please the fans, only to fail repeatedly) and the fans not really knowing what they want (they tend to fall into multiple categories, some of which are *really* outlandish), trying to take Sonic anywhere is a minefield. I have to agree with sonicboy678 on this...SEGA literally try and try to give the fans what they want but because the fundamentals of both 2D and 3D Sonic games aren't exactly alike for example one may prefer the Sonic Adventure games over the Classic games, I think it's not that SEGA doesn't care it's that they try and please everyone

Forces was just average. Not the best, but definitely not the worst. Sonic's controls seem sluggish compared to the fluidity and responsiveness of Mania and even Sonic Adventure.

Since we had a 2D game it was pointless to make the 3D one with 2.5D and Classic Sonic as one of the playable characters. I hope they split both characters.
The best part about Sonic Mania was the bonus stages that actually rewarded you with unlockables. I loved Sonic Mania so much I had to do a review on it.
Well, this is why I fell in love with the Sonic games back in 91/92/94 when Sonic 1,2,3&k was released on the Mega Drive and I was a little 10 year old
He does, he likes it, Sam I Am! All joking aside, if it's of any consolation; I at least get the WHY of the disliking Sonic. His games ARE kinda hit-and-miss, and while Sonic doesn't annoy ME, I'll admit his older appearances can be a little hard to stomach. Furthermore, Knuckles is actually my favorite too, but not for the same reasons you like him. If anything, I owe it to the great Dan Green, whose skill with making Knuckles sound badass and kinda goofy won me over.
watcher guy anyone involved in Sonic Mania should be head of Sonic Team now. The current developers seem to fail time and time again. There are situations where they did good. Like Sonic Unleashed day time levels as well as sonic heroes and the adventure games. But when the the last great Sonic Team game was practically best of collection of all the good levels in its history (sonic generations) there’s something wrong with that..

I think Sonic Forces could have worked if they doubled down on the OC. You know, considering that was the big draw to the game but you either play half the game as Sonic or as a tag team with Sonic ( and no, Im not counting Classic Sonic in this). At that point, why even bother with allowing anyone to make an OC in the first place?

I’ve always liked the 3D games more. Generations being my favorite and I really enjoyed what I’ve played of colors. But for a game targeting the Genesis crowd, this is a damn good game.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles has been my favorite Sonic game since my childhood, and probably in my top 10 favorite games of all time, but now I think Mania has it beat. It's just too good.
Loved the review Caddy! Sonic Mania was an awesome return to form for the series. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I guess you have played Sonic 3 considering you spoke about Hydrocity Zone/Blue Sphere but my personal favorite in the series is Sonic 3 & Knuckles. If for some reason I misunderstood and you haven't played Sonic 3 & Knuckles I highly recommend it!
for oil ocean boss the best way to beat it is to keep a fire shield, because it'll deflect the bullets that the boss shoots, for the platform insta death tho, just avoid going in the oil
Yeah, but if you're not skilled enough to bring a Fire Shield or Super Sonic to the battle, or if you die to the boss once, there's not much else you can do.
As for the Oil Ocean boss, it's actually not that hard to avoid the projectiles and you can make life easier for yourself by directly attacking the tentacle gun things (four hits destroys each and then the boss is a harmless pussycat), but the elemental shields also deflect projectiles: so if you have a Fire, Water, or Electric Shield going into that boss, you can mostly ignore the projectiles and just concentrate on hitting the boss's main body.

I'll admit, Mania was probably my favorite game from last year, but that boss is the worst part of it
Honestly, I think that point was more subjective than anything else. I know that this is primarily about his experiences with the game, but still. I had issues with that boss my first couple times through, but now I can plow through it pretty quickly.
Easier said than done. Especially when you're playing as knuckles...
That boss gave me trouble when I first played the game but after that the patterns became fairly obvious and I usually don't take a hit when I fight him nowadays.

This has to be my favorite Classic Sonic game, despite the fact that it wasn’t made during the Classic Sonic Era.

It is like a lost timeline Classic Sonic game, from either the end of the Genesis era or the beginning of the Saturn. What would've happened if we didn't go 'modern'. At least that's how it feels to me.

Absolutely love this game. Although I still prefer Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Sonic 3 and Knuckles had a better story, better atmosphere, and just has a special place in my heart.
As much as I love S3&K, the refined gameplay and level design, qol improvements, along with the amazing soundtrack and overall presentation are so GODDAMN STRONG in this game I had knock it down a spot.
Same fam. The only reasons why Mania hasn't replaced S3&K in my heart is that it isn't entirely comprised of original stages, no special stage grinding for hyper sonic, and no Mecha Sonic appearance (the reference during the red beetlebot boss fight in Knuckles story was neat though). =Y

Sonic 3 & Knuckles was just so perfect of an experience still til this day, it's just hard to top, now that being said i felt like a damn child playing Mania, even collecting the emeralds were just as good as S3&K and CD, Years later i somehow love Cds special stages 😂

There's a reason why we Sonic fans are so die-hard despite Sega being asshats with the games they make. Growing up Classic sonic games were so great, so different from any other games at the time. Yeah, sure they're flawed in a lot of ways but I chalk that down to it being the 90's and game design wasn't as much of a science as it is today. I feel hurt, betrayed even by Sonic Forces because I feel like it was designed solely for the sake of marketing and accessibility. they just threw together everything they THINK Sonic fans want like Classic Sonic, Shadow, Edgy story and music, and for some reason they think we don't want to actually PLAY the game. Lord knows we don't buy games to PLAY them! we just wanna look at the pretty graphics and hear the sounds and feel good about doing things that are all automatic anyway!! AND you have to BUY super Sonic! Fuck you Sega!
...but Sonic Mania kind of makes up for it. I mean it KNOWS what makes a Sonic game good. Forces THINKS it knows but it's like a marketing robot made it!
Then again, between Sonic Team trying so many things over the years (including trying to please the fans, only to fail repeatedly) and the fans not really knowing what they want (they tend to fall into multiple categories, some of which are *really* outlandish), trying to take Sonic anywhere is a minefield.
If anything, I'd consider Sonic Forces Sega's way of telling people to *make up their fucking minds.*

I have to agree with sonicboy678 on this...SEGA literally try and try to give the fans what they want but because the fundamentals of both 2D and 3D Sonic games aren't exactly alike for example one may prefer the Sonic Adventure games over the Classic games, I think it's not that SEGA doesn't care it's that they try and please everyone
I think Sonic Team should just do an entirely 3D Sonic game since we didnt have one in a long time. Also with some playable characters that play like Sonic but with some different abilities.

Forces was just average. Not the best, but definitely not the worst. Sonic's controls seem sluggish compared to the fluidity and responsiveness of Mania and even Sonic Adventure.
Fittingly enough, an AD showed before the video for Sonic's 25th Anniversary Artbook, with Sonic Mania music. Thanks, TH-cam for actually not recommending me trash for once.

Classic Sonic had no reason to be in Forces though, he was only brought in to tie in to Mania, and that's it. He just felt like a broken burden to me.
Since we had a 2D game it was pointless to make the 3D one with 2.5D and Classic Sonic as one of the playable characters. I hope they split both characters.

Well, this is why I fell in love with the Sonic games back in 91/92/94 when Sonic 1,2,3&k was released on the Mega Drive and I was a little 10 year old
I really like Sonic Forces (Classic Sonic not-withstanding) but I will agree that Sonic Mania is the superior of the two games.

All joking aside, if it's of any consolation; I at least get the WHY of the disliking Sonic. His games ARE kinda hit-and-miss, and while Sonic doesn't annoy ME, I'll admit his older appearances can be a little hard to stomach. Furthermore, Knuckles is actually my favorite too, but not for the same reasons you like him. If anything, I owe it to the great Dan Green, whose skill with making Knuckles sound badass and kinda goofy won me over.

watcher guy anyone involved in Sonic Mania should be head of Sonic Team now. The current developers seem to fail time and time again.
There are situations where they did good. Like Sonic Unleashed day time levels as well as sonic heroes and the adventure games.
But when the the last great Sonic Team game was practically best of collection of all the good levels in its history (sonic generations) there’s something wrong with that..

I think Sonic Forces could have worked if they doubled down on the OC. You know, considering that was the big draw to the game but you either play half the game as Sonic or as a tag team with Sonic ( and no, Im not counting Classic Sonic in this). At that point, why even bother with allowing anyone to make an OC in the first place?

I guess you have played Sonic 3 considering you spoke about Hydrocity Zone/Blue Sphere but my personal favorite in the series is Sonic 3 & Knuckles. If for some reason I misunderstood and you haven't played Sonic 3 & Knuckles I highly recommend it!

for oil ocean boss the best way to beat it is to keep a fire shield, because it'll deflect the bullets that the boss shoots, for the platform insta death tho, just avoid going in the oil
Yeah, but if you're not skilled enough to bring a Fire Shield or Super Sonic to the battle, or if you die to the boss once, there's not much else you can do.

As for the Oil Ocean boss, it's actually not that hard to avoid the projectiles and you can make life easier for yourself by directly attacking the tentacle gun things (four hits destroys each and then the boss is a harmless pussycat), but the elemental shields also deflect projectiles: so if you have a Fire, Water, or Electric Shield going into that boss, you can mostly ignore the projectiles and just concentrate on hitting the boss's main body.
Yeah. Before, i played the sonic games, didnt think much of them, then i loved sonic mania, and gained much appreciation for the blue blur.
