We didn’t deserve Ben Hurst. He has more passion for and understanding of the Sonic series than any of the game writers today. It makes me so unbelievably sad that we’ll never get a third SatAM season.
@@nellewoodruff6337 Hurst’s vision was incompatible but I do feel that he didn’t get justice (and likely never will). At least he tried when writing for Underground. All of this coming from someone who doesn’t understand the popularity of SatAM and is getting into Sonic.
Meh Sonic X is way better. This is just a bad fanfic that betrays Sonic, Robotnik and Tails characters. And even though this is Sonics "world" its not Mobius. No Green Hill Zone, Marble Zone ect. Ohh and no Badnicks :( Its obvious the people who made this never played Sonic 1 or read the manuel of it. I only liked the Bunny Cyborg, the rest of the cast is lame especially that Sally thot. She shouldve been Amy from the start. In Sonic the Comic she was awesome and blew Badnicks to bits with her crossbow. Why does she use that silly hammer in the games. Her modern look also sucks :(
@@KillyRR Amy didn't exist yet when this was made though, she didn't show up (in the games atleast) for a couple years and even then she was orginally a kid closer to Tails than to Sally and thus not directly comparable untill mutch later. literally the only characters that existed were sonic, tales and Robotnic (and knuckles was added during development, which is why he shows up later). also the comics (and pilot episode) that preceded this series did have badniks but reviews found them too silly which is why they were removed. American and italian test audiences (which this show was made for) aparently didn't like badniks at the time. edit: as for 'betraying' sonic, it has the approval of Naoto Ohshima, the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, so i would say it betrayed nothing.
@@KillyRR sonic satam is a thousand times better then sonic which is x is a pice of garbage and a disgrace to the sonic franchise. sonic x is an anime which is not what the sonic franchise is supposed to be and it dose not focus a lot on sonic or tails or the others instead it focuses on this random kid named chris who we will not see again also i don't like that series represents some of the characters. if you ask me characters like sally bunnie and rotor should be in sonic media today instead of amy or shadow silver and knuckles
Approval of God: Naoto Ohshima, the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, has said in Twitter posts that he enjoys Sonic SatAM. The DiC staff gave him a poster of the show's characters, which he keeps framed in glass: "Sonic was born in the image of the United States. I love American Sonic. Thank you." - Naoto Ohshima
Japanese Sonic channeled a more interesting and unorthodox (for a video game) part of American pop culture than Classic American Sonic did, imo. Japanese Sonic was extremely influenced by music and American pop culture in the way American Classic Sonic was not, which had more similarities within its same media and commerical marketing for kids at the time. I enjoy the Americanness of Classic JP Sonic than I do Classic US Sonic.
I think when Japan saw Sonic, they saw the cool and rebel aspects of the culture, with the legendary pop musicians and urban musical movements, while Americans sought to fix Sonic into a more run of the mill vibe that every 90s cartoon/comic targeted towards boys had back then
Urgh dont thank those yankees. You, a japanese created him. Hes a japanese creation. The US never couldve created him. The japanese Art of Sonic is way better than the ugly style the US and EU gave him. Sonic X > SonicSatam
@@KillyRR This argument isn't worth it, but your logic is flawed. Sonic was created in the image of AMERICA and his design was catered to AMERICANS, and tweaked by Americans, and given success thanks to those changes in design this is a fact. Prefer sonic X all you want, but it doesn't mean what Naoto said is wrong.

It genuinely saddens me knowing how SATAM, Archie Sonic, and this era of Sonic no longer gets the love like it used to. Even though Sonic X (Japanese dub ONLY) will always be my favorite Sonic show, Sally and the gang deserved better...
That's why I say Fleetway, OVA and Sonic Underground should also get more love. Work SU to better fit with SatAM or just work better, make the rest of the OVA episodes, etc.
I grew up with the early Genesis games, Sonic SatAM, and the Archie comics that used the same designs, characters, and story as the show. Every time a new game would drop there would be a comic miniseries or 48-page special that adapted it, so it all felt pretty tightly knit to me as a kid. Even though most fans now want to disown all that, I will always think of SatAM as "my" Sonic.
What Could Have Been: The show's third season was completely laid out and prepared, and then ABC cancelled it: The Freedom Fighters (now called "Freedom Builders") would have begun the process of rebuilding Mobotropolis, Rotor spearheading the transformation, and Sonic finding that Victory Is Boring. Unbeknown to them, Snively would be sneaking about Robotropolis, gathering intel on the Freedom Fighters and plotting to attack them outright. For a time, Snively is able to place himself in a position of power, proving himself as formidable a foe as Robotnik, if not more so. However, his time as head villain would prove short lived thanks to the efforts of the Freedom Fighters, and in a moment of desperation would free Naugus, Robotnik, and King Acorn from the void. Naugus immediately takes on the title of main villain, using the King as bait to lure Sally in, and making Snively nothing. Robotnik's nephew was slated to defect to the Freedom Fighters in retaliation, although he would secretly plan to betray them at some point, Antoine being the only one to notice - and ultimately stop - Snively's plans. The show apparently would have eventually confirmed, as some fans had already speculated, that Mobius was Earth All Along, with the story set millennia after a world-purging nuclear war that wiped out humans and caused animals to become sapient. Robotnik and Snively were to be the last humans alive and had been off-planet on a space colonization mission when the war struck. After betraying and killing the rest of their crew, they returned to Earth and, due to relativity, landed after the animals had already assumed control of the planet. Tails would have matured and played a much larger role as an official member of the Freedom Fighters, even showing a bit of a rebellious side and would save Knothole Village from a major disaster. Furthermore, his relationship with Sonic would have been closer to the games. Dulcy would have come into her full powers. All Ben Hurst said about that was, “You don’t want to see a dragon when she gets mad.” Sally would be romanced by someone other than Sonic, though in the end Sonic would eventually come out on top. Sonic would also undergo a major personality change. Nicole's backstory would be told, revealing that she was once a Mobian child that was brainwashed into a computer program by Robotnik. At some point NICOLE would be restored to her former self, becoming a part of the Freedom Fighters. At some point, Knothole would *"get crunched".* Knuckles was supposed to appear at the end of the season and was going to be more of a main character for an also never made fourth season.
Exactly what I read over the years, I was thinking of making a fanfiction based off this, two actually where one takes place during the season three we never got and another that shows a very interesting point of view from a third human, particularly a young female, that awakens from cryosleep some time after Robotnik's return from the Void but just before Knothole gets destroyed and tries to assist the Mobians from the sidelines. Although given how I'm not as active on fanfiction.net aside from reading other people's stories and making comments, I just don't have much time to maintain two stories of such quality right now.
@@HaloisTight IKR. So much about Sonic Underground was basically just taken from SatAM. And there was absolutely nothing wrong with SatAM, it was actually a very good example of a more serious kid's cartoon done right. When it was decided to go forward with another Sonic Cartoon, seems they were using so much SatAM material anyway, they should have just picked up where the story left off. There's certainly ways to do that for a brand new audience without requiring them to watch the previous seasons to know what is going on.
No matter how many times I hear it, it always sort of surprises me to hear Ken Pender's idea for a skunk to deflower a chipmunk in this comic for children.
Damn right, and the worst part is that Takeshi Lizuka, the man who won't let Ian Flynn fix what Forces did wrong in the IDW Sonic Comics and prevents Shadow from having any personality or using his Chaos Powers for the sake of meaningless legal restrictions, has shown interest in "his" app proposal for the Lara-Mary-Sue Shitstorm-Chronicles just recently or so I've heard.
@@EnclaveSOC-102 Ian Flynn did fix Forces...or at least a lot of it...I know the issue with Shadow is still there but he fixed Tails from being a wimpy baby and fixed why Knuckles didn't even seem to care about the Master Emerald anymore.
if sega can pour money into sonic boom, surely they could pour money into something like this, that people actually want, people, and kids need smart, darker stories than what we have right now, there is a reason why shows like sonic satam, avatar the last airbender, and starwars clonewars are so beloved and for the most part timeless (sonic is the embodiment of the 90s afterall), there is a reason why adventure 2 is more often than not on the top of peoples lists of best story in the games, because it treated itself seriously and their audience, who are 85% kids, with respect, I can only hope that someone out there gives sega a pitch for a smart, fun, creative show that takes itself seriously like satam again, and sega accepts

Thank you for putting into words how much SatAM has resonated with its dedicated fans, I truly hope it gets the season 3 it deserves. I remember when the DVD set kit the shelves in the UK I've never made a grab for a series so fast. And also thank you for reigniting a small ray of hope in me, after the results of the recent UK general election I was despairing and in a very dark place mentally but this, the messages in this have given me hope (even if only a little) to keep going.
I've definitely fallen down a SatAM rabbit hole on TH-cam of late, and it does my 35-year old nostalgic heart well. This is definitely one of the more thorough looks back I've seen, great to see, and glad you shouted out the folks at Fans United for SatAM at the end! Wish I could try out for their voice cast again...also appreciate you making the connection between a story of collective resistance and the circumstances we all find ourselves living through today, made all the more clear as 2020 has worn on. The show really did mean a lot when it came out; you're not wrong to point out that its general air of there being stakes involved, a truly scary villain, a sense that something *bad* could happen to the main characters (roboticization scared the hell out of 8 year old me), the depth of the artwork behind the show, and even the practice of doing a Saturday morning cartoon with serialized story telling...a lot about the show was pretty revolutionary for its time, which is nuts when you consider it was a vehicle for a video game IP with little more to its lore besides "90s dude with an attitude". It was never flawless, but so many of its flaws feel like they were products of the era and circumstances under which the show was made; makes me really wonder what a modern SatAM, made in a post-Avatar the Last Airbender world, could look like and the stories/character arcs it could develop. Hope the team at FUSatAM gets to show us!
The series is as fun and silly but took itself seriously Like with all the tech Eggman has itd make sense that he could take over world, I wish we could’ve seen satam in the modern era
@Blackie I blame that bastard Ken Penders, since SEGA and Sonic SatAM writers were all on board with releasing a third season, up until he screwed it all up with his crazy bullshit.
I almost cried several times and I'm so glad someone could speak so beautifully on the this thing I've become deeply invested in. I learned so much and was reminded of all the powerful feelings this show has gave me. These are the kind of moments that makes me want to write stories and cartoons in the first place.
The best episode in my opinion is Sonic's Nightmare because it reveals another dimension to the character. Sonic is always portrayed as the one dimensional teenager with an attitude so it was refreshing to see him plagued by self doubt for once.
I adore how much love and care was poured out into making this. This show wasn't part of my childhood but now I really feel like I missed out. The writing, the character chemistry and the overall plot is just so immersive! Good writing like that is so hard to find nowadays. A heartfelt message that resonated through and touched everyone that felt what it's like to fight even when it's tough. Never giving up, knowing that what they're fighting for is right. Hope that being unified has a power stronger than anything. Loved ones all working together to make a better world. A more just world! I want to believe in that, now more than ever! SatAM and its steadfast fandom make me believe we can make it real. Thank you for making this video!

I have always been an absolute fan of Sonic the hedgehog SatAm since I was a little kid I just love everything thare is about it is also my favorite version of Sonic the hedgehog out of everyone of the others and I sincerely hope that season 3 kicks off.
Sonic SatAM was the single most influential piece of media in my entire 40-year life and it deserved far more than two seasons. Almost 27 years later and I'm still upset that the shlock known as Power Rangers took over its time spot. SatAM was just too experimental, too revolutionary for its own good. There's no way anything like that could be made nowadays. And no I didn't forget about the awful few episodes it had. But it was a once-in-a-lifetime alignment of the stars and planets that we'll unfortunately never see again.
Not to say SatAM sucks, but we did get gems like In Space, Lost Galaxy Lightspeed Rescue, Time Force, Dino Thunder, SPD, Jungle Fury, RPM, Dino Charge, and Beast Morphers.
Power Rangers is a show with absolute highs and god awful lows. But trust me when I say that the best seasons of it a truely a masterpiece of children's media, looking specifically at the era between In Space and SPD with a couple of great season following as well. Though if I could trade the existence for Turbo, Overdrive and Megaforce for Season 3 of SatAM I would
SATAM wasnt original or experimental in the slightest... run of the mill American show with Duck Tales esque adventures and several of the cyberpunk aesthetics you can see in even some sega original games like Vectorman or the Ooze. In fact, its entire atmosphere is nothing standout as far as 90s grim dark shows are concerned... If SATAM is the most influential media in all 40 years of your existence I think you need to consume non children's media.
What I love is that the comics explore Robotnik's past, yet not entirely. Yes he is an Overlander and yes he once fought on the side of King Acorn, but he had his own path of domination. Because what are we as humans, if not individuals who reap the benefits of nature to their fullest extent? This commentary can be profound yet subtle, if done properly. This show did it perfectly. In the original backstory of Robotnik, he did fight to protect King Acorn, yet this turn of his was never fully explored. We get hints of it in this show and in the comics, but it's nothing really extensive. I would like to see THIS the focus of a major tentpole game. But we're never going to get that because SEGA thinks they need to reinvent the wheel every time they release a new game. You have this incredible established and iconic villain that you can do so much more with. Fuckin use him properly like the show and comics did, but go further. Make him a Thanos, make him a Darth Vader, make him a Joker, make him a Tyler Durden. Do something with him. For frig's sake. And I doubt that this new Sonic movie is going to do anywhere near the ranks of this show or the Endgame Series because it was just too good.
I never saw this cartoon at 10 or 11 years old when it first came out and I just recently watched all 26 episodes online. I really miss the Sally character and the chemistry she and Sonic shared.
It is very sad we never got to see Ben Hurst's vision come to play. There are currently a team of hard working animators called Team Sea3on who are working on bringing Ben's concept to life. Hopefully it will come to be one day.
It's amazing how much time you put into analyzing this show and explaining why it remains incomplete. I've been keeping track of Team Sea3on's efforts to give it closure and I for one am happy about it. It's quite apparent that in the cutthroat world of television production, the supposedly promising concept of a season's worth of stories to tie all loose ends is almost always wasted on the higher-up executives (and also most fans of more popular shows). It's foolish to give up hope, though. If you're familiar with Craig McCracken's heartwarming cartoon, Wander Over Yonder, you'd know that, like SatAM Sonic, there's still more to tell after two seasons - there's even a cliffhanger in the second season finale's end tag. For that reason, SaveWOY continues. As of today, we still don't know who or what the "Naugus" of Wander's currently shelved third season is, but we're doing what we can to change the Disney executives' minds. Anyway, best of luck to Team Sea3on!
37:16 Small correction: SatAM was indeed a serialized cartoon but it wasn't the first or especially revolutionary (one of the best early attempts, for sure), X-Men had tackled it a year beforehand and there were some shows such as the Sunbow Transformers cartoon that did attempt this in the 80s as well (at least in its third season).
The Clone Wars and Sonic SatAM were the only shows that could pull of the loaded stories they did. Dystopian future where the heroes fight a tyrannical government in a 1984/Holocaust struggle? Done. Showing the lives of civilians in the midst of a political-based galaxy-wide conflict? Portrayed effortlessly. Both showing the evil in their respective universes, just as our own. And to manage to pack all that into cartoons that kids can watch, enjoy, and look back on later in life with renewed understanding? There will never be anything like them again. I wasn’t even born until the early 2000’s, but I was lucky enough to basically live the childhood of someone born in the 80’s-90’s. No internet, everything was either cable or VCR, and I got to catch these cartoons as reruns on Saturdays and early weekday mornings before leaving for school. I don’t want to imagine my life without growing up with these gems.
AMAZING video; I’ve never heard such a perfect articulation of what made this show great, and I had no idea about so many of these behind-the-scenes details, including the attempt to revive Season 3.

We might not ever got a season 3. But we did get Mania Adventures and although not the same, shows fans still love animated sonic series. It gives hope for the future. Never isn't forever and I believe that is something we should hold dear! Fans keep it alive and well; the fans are doing a great job with sonic, aren't they?

2 years ago i watched Sonic SatAM for the very first time and yes it was in fact a masterpiece , its not something that only 90s kids like because of nostalgia NO it still holds up after all this time , it is not afraid of telling children that sometimes life is not the way we want , but it doesnt tell it in a disappointing way NO it tells it in a hopeful way , it says sometimes life becomes dark but there is always a ray of light in that darkness and despite how dark it can get... finally you will see the light again, and that is something that people ( even children ) has to learn . and after watching SatAM i checked out the Ian Flynn era of Archie Sonic and it was amazing as well just a few years ago i wasnt aware of the existence of Sally and the Freedom Fighters but now not only i know them but im also a fan of them , i even like SatAM/Archie side of sonic more than the sonic games , they show that this franchise isnt just the stupid stories of a stupid fast blue hedgehog NO it can be realistic and you can learn real life lessons from it i did watch a few episodes of other sonic shows as a kid and i did play 2 or 3 sonic games for a short while as a kid but overall i cant really say i grew up with sonic but since 2 years ago thanks to TH-cam videos done by sonic fans i got curious to check out all different parts of the sonic multi media and fell in love with the franchise and now thanks to all the good stuff in sonic franchise ( and specially SatAM and now dead Archie sonic ) i will always be a sonic fan rest in piece Freedom Fighters #Rally4Sally
With Ben Hurst gone, there is not much reason left to try to bring back SatAm. Not to mention they would have to recast Sonic; considering Jaleel White's voice for Sonic hasn't aged well if you heard him in the BlueCore Sonic fanfilm.
Incredible to know the mind behind the best version of Sonic in animation I was inspired back in 1995 to right a screenplay based on his vision. I remember thinking after playing the game, had imagined the world of Sonic as such. This was my vision for how a feature film for Sonic would be, not what came out in Jan. RIP Ben.
The fatal flaw of Penders is that, while he has some decent ideas sometimes, he never goes anywhere with them - instead favoring endless meandering and self-indulgence that's less about the characters and more about his ego.

A wonderful review on one of my favorite childhood shows! This is defiantly a gem! Ben Hurst didn't make a Sonic show that we deserved, he made one we needed!!! ;)
There will never be another cartoon like SatAM. I really hope Sonic Prime will take inspiration from SatAM rather than the Sonic Boom cartoon (I like Sonic Boom, but I personally prefer the darker and more experimental storylines).
This brings me back fond memories. Kinda wish they made a crossover of SatAM and modern day Sonic I would love to see Robotniks reaction when encountering Eggman.
I want this to happen! A season 3 of This show I'll watch the entire show if this happens. I know I'm late watching this and the show (born in 95') gosh darn it. Oh I noticed a Tracy Yardley work in the beginning. Yes, another chance to revive the freedom fighters! Love the video. Ben, r.i.p
You know, I never grew up with the show. I was born about a year after it ended, it wasn’t until about 2008 I discovered SatAM and it’s honestly the greatest Sonic series there is. Adventures was fun for what it was, X was okay in small doses, Boom at least had the self-aware humor angle and the less said about Underground, the better. But SatAM had everything, it had action, it had tragedy, it had (for the most part) great characters. Sonic and Sally are the perfect pairing, he’s hotheaded and she never looses her cool, he’s a rambunctious teen while she mature beyond her years. They just work well if each other. This Robotnik is definitely the most menacing interpretation of the character, and having the voice of Jim Cummings helps. So yeah, in short, SatAM is great.
I loved the SatAM series. I feel like the only Sonic-related TV show that I can compare in greatness is Sonic X. Sonic X got the modern-Sonic character perfect, and it had the best voice acting of any of the animations by a hair over the satAM. Sure, the human characters (excluding Dr. Eggman) were somewhat obnoxious, but aside from that, it was just a solid show. If I had to choose between Sonic X and the satAM as to which I liked better, I couldn't tell you. They are equal in my eyes. I know I'm in the minority when I say that I thoroughly enjoyed X, but I enjoyed it nonetheless, and I hope that y'all will respect my opinion as I will respect yours.
Sonic X okay in “small doses”? Are you kidding, it’s the best! Though the Japanese version had more scenes that were cut from the English version. I like Boom too though, which entertained me during the pandemic last year, and Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
@@jackiethecartoonfan2300 I was referring to the 4kids dub only because it’s got too much cheesy comedy for my taste, if you’re into X sub or dub, go crazy.

But I am happy to see that some of the fans that still like these Sonic shows and the Sonic comics but it is kind of sad to see that some of the other fans that doesn't like these shows and the comic books as well as the characters with it I don't like seeing how fans treat these characters from the Sonic franchise I don't like that not one bit. But I am happy to see that Team Sea3on is bringing back the Sonic the Hedgehog Satam show but as much as I'm happy to see it coming back I would rather prefer to see it on TV with the same voice actors that we know. I hope you understand that what I'm trying to say.

Hey Nezumi. Your videos always turn out great from what I've seen so far, but this one really did it. You put into words what few others can manage to and brought out the ultimate wave of nostalgic inspiration and remembrance for surviving gems like Sonic SATAM. I remember I watched the series on Netflix when I was a younger teenager and though the details faded on me over time, I always had a soft spot for this old dog. Seeing the ending was amazing as so many possibilities existed for the follow-up that never came. But if things like this show and Danganronpa have taught me anything, it's that even in the presence of despair and ambivalence, hope will always remain a shining weapon in the face of adversity. Hoping the fan-made Season 3 goes well! PS: I'm one of those kids who actually liked Sonic Underground, by the way. It is kind of insulting seeing how it took priority over SATAM though, which is probably a strong reason why people can't get behind that one. I found it charming, perhaps even underrated, but objectively SATAM was everything a Sonic show should've been. Overall the best video on this show I've ever seen.

One of my fave animated shows! this show balanced Sci-fi, fantasy, drama, action and some humor. It was like a cross between Star Wars, He-Man/She-Ra and MTV's Aeon Flux (who remembers that even on Liquid TV?). Not to mention Sally Acorn, Bunnie Rabbot and Lupe i dug when i was 11/12/13 as i found them foxy, LOL.
16:28 Jaleel White 100% succeeded in what he was going for here, at least for me. I didn't know about Family Matters as a kid, so the only place I ever heard his voice was as Sonic. In terms of the animation of other DiC cartoons, I think this is the only one with enough quality to compete with the more serious stuff at the time, and pretty much getting a lot of good talent for the time, I mean before and after I don't see too much quality that DiC put into their other animated efforts, and I kind of find it ironic that it's one of their video game adaptations that is the only show they put any effort into rather than anything that would be an original IP by them I mean especially considering their other adaptations of video games that came before like the various Nintendo games like Mario and Zelda or since even with the same IP if Sonic Underground is anything to go by, I'm not saying that it's a bad thing but it's just ironic that of all the Cartoons that DiC ever put any serious effort into that it would be one of their video game adaptations, I mean especially when comparing it to the quality of not just their other game adaptations but other DiC shows in general.
At 6:25 in the archie comics in the 30 years later arc they made a joke about it in the second part which is amazing. Satam is still my favourite sonic show and I love all the freedom fighters (maybe not antoine I prefer the comic version) I just wish they could be in a game because they would fit right in
Gotta love executive decisions. Despite the popularity. Funny I was thinking how this show couldn't hold up to the likes of adventure time, regular show, etc. But this kind of makes me rediscover my enjoyment of the show I grew up with since I was 5. And now we got a group making a third season a reality it's pretty surreal
Executive Meddling: Sega Enterprises was known to make frustrating and seemingly-arbitrary demands. For example, like many American cartoons, the characters were all originally designed with four fingers instead of five. The designs were approved by Sega of America, but were rejected by Sega Enterprises, who were reportedly afraid that it would be associated with the Yakuza's tendency to chop off victims' fingers. This resulted in DiC having to reanimate a number of already-completed scenes to include additional fingers. Almost all of the writing staff who worked on Season 1 were removed sometime before development of Season 2 began, leaving Ben Hurst as essentially the sole writer for the series going forward. The remaining staff were pushed to create Dulcy to balance out the gender ratio of the Freedom Fighters. The four Antoine shorts were also a request of executives, as a part of their demand to lighten up the series by adding more comedy.
SatAM might not be my thing, or what I personally am looking for in Sonic. But I can respect what it was, snd the amount of passion and effort that went into it.
I grew up owning Sonic SATam on disc and has always loved the show! Now that I'm older I now see the odd pacing and as a kid I always thought I was missing some episodes but when I got older it turned out that's how it was designed.

We didn’t deserve Ben Hurst. He has more passion for and understanding of the Sonic series than any of the game writers today. It makes me so unbelievably sad that we’ll never get a third SatAM season.
What about Ian Flynn? He probably knows more about Sonic than Ben Hurst or the modern writers.
@@GIJOEFAN-ys8gp I like Ian but I feel Ben was robbed and deserved to have shared his vision. May he rest in peace
@@nellewoodruff6337 Hurst’s vision was incompatible but I do feel that he didn’t get justice (and likely never will). At least he tried when writing for Underground. All of this coming from someone who doesn’t understand the popularity of SatAM and is getting into Sonic.

The 90s was a time for epic cartoons like Sonic SatAM.
Sonic SatAM was this perfect blend of Drama, Comedy, Action, Heart and Thematic relevance it was so memorable thanks for this video...
A perfect summary!
Meh Sonic X is way better. This is just a bad fanfic that betrays Sonic, Robotnik and Tails characters. And even though this is Sonics "world" its not Mobius. No Green Hill Zone, Marble Zone ect. Ohh and no Badnicks :(
Its obvious the people who made this never played Sonic 1 or read the manuel of it.
True
The DiC staff gave him a poster of the show's characters, which he keeps framed in glass:
"Sonic was born in the image of the United States. I love American Sonic. Thank you." - Naoto Ohshima
😥🔫
Meanwhile underground
I really wish they would reunite the cast of x and redub it with the Japanese dialogue. I would love to hear that cast with Japans version.
What Could Have Been:
The show's third season was completely laid out and prepared, and then ABC cancelled it:
The Freedom Fighters (now called "Freedom Builders") would have begun the process of rebuilding Mobotropolis, Rotor spearheading the transformation, and Sonic finding that Victory Is Boring.
All Ben Hurst said about that was, “You don’t want to see a dragon when she gets mad.”
Sally would be romanced by someone other than Sonic, though in the end Sonic would eventually come out on top. Sonic would also undergo a major personality change.
Nicole's backstory would be told, revealing that she was once a Mobian child that was brainwashed into a computer program by Robotnik. At some point NICOLE would be restored to her former self, becoming a part of the Freedom Fighters.
At some point, Knothole would *"get crunched".*
Knuckles was supposed to appear at the end of the season and was going to be more of a main character for an also never made fourth season.
I mean that’s pretty close to how the comic continued it
That would be awesome!
Why couldn't we be living in a universe where we had Satam season 3 and 4 instead of Underground?
@@HaloisTight IKR. So much about Sonic Underground was basically just taken from SatAM. And there was absolutely nothing wrong with SatAM, it was actually a very good example of a more serious kid's cartoon done right. When it was decided to go forward with another Sonic Cartoon, seems they were using so much SatAM material anyway, they should have just picked up where the story left off. There's certainly ways to do that for a brand new audience without requiring them to watch the previous seasons to know what is going on.

if sega can pour money into sonic boom, surely they could pour money into something like this, that people actually want, people, and kids need smart, darker stories than what we have right now, there is a reason why shows like sonic satam, avatar the last airbender, and starwars clonewars are so beloved and for the most part timeless (sonic is the embodiment of the 90s afterall), there is a reason why adventure 2 is more often than not on the top of peoples lists of best story in the games, because it treated itself seriously and their audience, who are 85% kids, with respect, I can only hope that someone out there gives sega a pitch for a smart, fun, creative show that takes itself seriously like satam again, and sega accepts
@@robianknight4001 Exactly, that's why the Freedom Fighters are seemingly gone forever following SEGA's fallout with Archie.

Did you hear about the sonic season 3 fan made project?
The new season 3 is not gonna live up to expectations (but won't necessarily be bad), I'm calling it.
The series is as fun and silly but took itself seriously

Wow, I utterly relate to the anger I had for Power Rangers taking the spot! That brought back memories, lol. 😭
Not to say SatAM sucks, but we did get gems like In Space, Lost Galaxy Lightspeed Rescue, Time Force, Dino Thunder, SPD, Jungle Fury, RPM, Dino Charge, and Beast Morphers.
@@SteveCrafts2k And honestly, I never watched any of that.
I honestly hope the Netflix series takes inspiration from SatAM.
I agreed
It is very sad we never got to see Ben Hurst's vision come to play. There are currently a team of hard working animators called Team Sea3on who are working on bringing Ben's concept to life. Hopefully it will come to be one day.
Found this after seeing their promo and updated opening with the lead vocalist from Crush40. Looking good so far!
"Got a call from Ken Penders.."

Loved the video! Even got me a little teary towards the end. And LOVE the shoutout to Team Sea3on, so so so excited about that! :D
This is an amazingly comprehensive take. Seriously.
Julian Robotnik in the series is terrifying because, as the Protomen so aptly put it, "The man in the tower controls it all!"
I don’t want to imagine my life without growing up with these gems.

and yes it was in fact a masterpiece , its not something that only 90s kids like because of nostalgia NO it still holds up after all this time , it is not afraid of telling children that sometimes life is not the way we want , but it doesnt tell it in a disappointing way NO it tells it in a hopeful way , it says sometimes life becomes dark but there is always a ray of light in that darkness and despite how dark it can get... finally you will see the light again, and that is something that people ( even children ) has to learn .
and after watching SatAM i checked out the Ian Flynn era of Archie Sonic and it was amazing as well
just a few years ago i wasnt aware of the existence of Sally and the Freedom Fighters but now not only i know them but im also a fan of them , i even like SatAM/Archie side of sonic more than the sonic games , they show that this franchise isnt just the stupid stories of a stupid fast blue hedgehog NO it can be realistic and you can learn real life lessons from it
i did watch a few episodes of other sonic shows as a kid and i did play 2 or 3 sonic games for a short while as a kid but overall i cant really say i grew up with sonic but since 2 years ago thanks to TH-cam videos done by sonic fans i got curious to check out all different parts of the sonic multi media and fell in love with the franchise
and now thanks to all the good stuff in sonic franchise ( and specially SatAM and now dead Archie sonic ) i will always be a sonic fan
rest in piece Freedom Fighters

With Ben Hurst gone, there is not much reason left to try to bring back SatAm.
Not to mention they would have to recast Sonic; considering Jaleel White's voice for Sonic hasn't aged well if you heard him in the BlueCore Sonic fanfilm.
Incredible to know the mind behind the best version of Sonic in animation I was inspired back in 1995 to right a screenplay based on his vision. I remember thinking after playing the game, had imagined the world of Sonic as such. This was my vision for how a feature film for Sonic would be, not what came out in Jan. RIP Ben.
I cried when Tails said "I miss my mom too." 😭😭😭😭😭
He's also my favorite character so why wouldn't we cry?
i grew up with the show, id love too see the 3rd season come to be the kid in me would be happy.
Rip Ben
i really don't get how penders has accumulated a fanbase.
The fatal flaw of Penders is that, while he has some decent ideas sometimes, he never goes anywhere with them - instead favoring endless meandering and self-indulgence that's less about the characters and more about his ego.
@@NezumiVA he's also a dick.
@@NezumiVA sounds like Ian Flynn....clash of egos and jonathan gray sonamy obsession, their fanbases tend to be like them, toxic only way for them to have one to begin with
@@alwaysangry2232 Grabage take. Ian Flynn made the Sonic Comic something incredible
@@drekiskrek5008 calling it a garbage take is pretty immature thing to do just because of your bias , heh just like Ian *lets doxx c a cancer survivor* flynn but in serious note i dont hate it and i admit of his quality
Great video! Miss that show so much. When Ben Hurst died, I pretty much gave up on seeing the show revived. I am happy to hear about Fans United for Sat AM!
Thanks for this!
Man I didn’t think I’d be crying after watching a video about Sonic Satam
*BUT I WAS WRONG*
Maybe just maybe one day somebody will be hired by Sega who believes in Ben's story. There is always the maybe and in that maybe there is hope. Keep on juicin' Ben Hurst!!!!!
A wonderful review on one of my favorite childhood shows! This is defiantly a gem! Ben Hurst didn't make a Sonic show that we deserved, he made one we needed!!! ;)
Can’t think of a better time than now for people to look to this show for guidance on fighting for freedom...
I grew up playing the Genesis Sonic games but SatAM was what made me LOVE Sonic, this video made me want to cry.
this is very underrated, and needs more views. I never realized how amazing this series really was
Let’s just HOPE to god whatever the sonic Netflix show is, is some kind of spiritual successor to sonic SATAM, because it would be amazing.
There will never be another cartoon like SatAM. I really hope Sonic Prime will take inspiration from SatAM rather than the Sonic Boom cartoon (I like Sonic Boom, but I personally prefer the darker and more experimental storylines).
Seeing this it's great to see some form of Ben's dreaming coming true almost 30 years after his untimely demise
GO TEAM SE3SONS
Why does the creation of the robotisizor sound like a great cybermen episode of Doctor who

I agree this Eggman/Robotnik is the scariest one to come on screen, and to be honest, be the main villain in Sonic prime
This brings me back fond memories. Kinda wish they made a crossover of SatAM and modern day Sonic
I would love to see Robotniks reaction when encountering Eggman.
Ben, r.i.p
I absolutely loved Sonic's voice in this show
Ikr! Jaleel White is one of, if not my favorite Sonic VA.
Sonic satam worshippers leave adventures of sonic sonic underground sonic x sonic boom alone
It is kind of sad to Sonic Satam, Sonic Underground and Archie Sonic comics are over and they're not coming back that makes me sad to see.
Wonderful video! Thank you for gathering all this information. This show found me at the perfect age and I have so much nostalgia for those early mornings, sitting in my PJs, chowing down an big bowl of dry cereal, wating to see my favorite show. My little sister and i reinacted the stories with our toys and figurines, developing characters and storylines of our own... and just wishing to visit Mobias more than once every saturday morning.
Thank you for your words at the end. Conclusive and ambitious. Revitalized me quite like I needed today.
this is still my number 1 favorite sonic video to go back for a rewatch
Check out Sea3on’s work, looks like we are finally getting the season 3 we deserved
Sonic's really adorable in this cartoon (well he always is ofc but I really like his look in this)
Quit insulting sonic underground
@@tabletaussendienst2721 Hmm? I wasn't insulting it at all, I love Sonic Underground. Was just saying how I can understand why people wouldn't like how it took priority over SATAM.
@@FantasyJared ok
Love this show since i was 11 years old when it debuted as i've been a fan of Sonic since i played sample Genesis at the Sears stores in Albuquerque malls and i did got my SNES for my birthday in 92 and i collected the comics since issue one then got my Genesis for Christmas at age 11 with Sonic 1 and 2.
Happy one year anniversary to this video!
Wow, a year already? Time flies.
@@NezumiVA Now it's two years.

Jaleel White 100% succeeded in what he was going for here, at least for me. I didn't know about Family Matters as a kid, so the only place I ever heard his voice was as Sonic. And I had no idea if the person doing the voice was even male or female, let alone what ethnicity they might have been.
Imagine an anime based on SatAM
Great video dude! This show means a lot to me, I grew up with this and am now introducing it to my kids. They dig it, and are invested! Thanks for the education and perspective.
Ok big brained plan: we all storm segas HQ and demand a season three with all of it's ideas in mind (the good ones)
And then maximize season 3 to the fullest
I'm starting to realize based on the other cartoons done by them, but I think this is probably the only Cartoon DiC ever put any serious effort into.
No matter the reputation Sonic Fans have...There is no mistaking the fandom is alive & well given the reception to Sonic 1 & 2 movies.
Wow fantastic work on this! Thanks for doing this video!
At 6:25 in the archie comics in the 30 years later arc they made a joke about it in the second part which is amazing. Satam is still my favourite sonic show and I love all the freedom fighters (maybe not antoine I prefer the comic version) I just wish they could be in a game because they would fit right in
The moment I heard ken penders name is the moment I felt despair.
'Nasty as a one-eyed snake, tails' im done
Man, that speech in the end really got me. ^-^
My approach is as follows - Season 3 is REAL LIFE.
Executive Meddling:
Sega Enterprises was known to make frustrating and seemingly-arbitrary demands.
Imagine if this series got a reboot in a Sonic X art style.
I grew up owning Sonic SATam on disc and has always loved the show!
Now that I'm older I now see the odd pacing and as a kid I always thought I was missing some episodes but when I got older it turned out that's how it was designed.
