You got the thing about framerates wrong. The animations are done at 24fps, but the sprites just move around the screen at 60. Nobody other than Glen Keane would be masochistic enough to animate at true 60fps.
I would love to see an option to actually play the game at 24fps... I understand from a gameplay perspective why it's better that it runs at 60fps, but it all looks a little disjointed by mashing different framerates together.
Unfortunately to view the 60fps version you gotta actually have the interactive mobile version that it was made for. The version you probably watched online was the non-interactive, 30fps version.
About the thing you said about the coins, there are enough coins to get everything in the shop, but not all of them are in the run-and-gun stages. You only get about 15 in the stages, and the rest you find by looking around the 4 islands. There is one you'll find simply hidden in the maps, and some are gotten by talking to certain people.
Well yeah its 3. I counted the Devil's casino as an entire island for some reason. Probably should have said areas rather than islands, but still, the casino area has a coin hidden there too.
Geez... Journalists think everything is Dark Souls. Crash N.Sane is Dark Souls of platformers. Cuphead is the Dark Souls of the run and gun genre. My interest is the Dark Souls of wanting to work.
2:33 Just want to make a slight correction. The game runs at 60, but the animations are still done at 24 fps. Basically, when stuff is panning around the screen, it's at 60, but the actual animations of the sprites are done at only 24, which is why they look so accurate to old cartoons. If they were actually animated at 60, they'd really lose their authenticity.
Josephman900 so breath of the wild is the dark souls of open world games? Mgsv is the dark souls of stealth games? Castlevania is the dark souls of 2d platformers?
I know, it's so irritating. It devalues the Souls series by reducing them to nothing but a measurement of difficulty. Those games have so much going for them, but all anyone sees is how hard they are.
IDK why, but that portrait of Caddy Daddy is all types of smug looking, I feel dirty. Heh. Im so glad Cuphead is a huge success and it shows even with all the delays and pushed dates, these guys show so much love and dedication that they wanted it to be ABSOLUTELY Polished like Ivory.
No, Youngstars are too used to games with hand holders. this is classic arcade difficulty, and btw dark souls it is not that difficult it is just like a puzzle game, shit even speedrunners don't get entertained just rolling and doing nothing.
literally nothing about this game appeals to me but I wanted to leave this down here in case someone's interested: The couple who made it took 5 years, and in that time they had to offer up everything they owned including their house as collateral in case it failed. That's some inspiring dedication, glad it succeeded for them. (Even though it is like, the literal exact opposite of everything that I like...)
I also hate how Dark Souls has become the go to comparison for anything that is incredibly hard nowadays. Like, just say the game is hard like a normal person would and move on; no need to display your pop culture influenced myopia, journalists.
I swear to god, like 90 percent of the people who give the game its reputation have 1. Never played it 2. Only played the tutorial or 3. Are very inexperienced in retro gaming usually a combination of two of those things
Well Caddy, you actually can buy every item in the game. In addition to getting every coin in the run and guns, you can also find coins in the overworld. They're really hidden, and a couple of them are bullshut but there are little tiny yellow ovals in every overworld that will get you coins. There are 40 coins in the whole game, enough to buy every item from the shop.
This game almost seems like a spiritual successor to one of my all time favourites - Alien Soldier on the Mega Drive. From the tough as nails but totally fair difficulty, to the fact that it's basically 90% boss fights with short but sweet run and gun segments sprinkled throughout, to the experimental mix-and-match weapon system that makes you learn the ins and outs of the weapons and which ones work best in which scenarios...
There is always a refreshing feeling coming back to a quick Caddy Review after Cuphead's Mii Costume became available in Smash today. Feeling uber nostalgic, was not disappointed... and then I watch you and TomSka playing on the 2nd channel and that was just icing on the cake.
2:29 Caddy, I know my animations well and I have to tell you that animations in Cuphead are not made in 60 fps. These hand drawn animations are only 24 or 30fps and some maybe even 12 (i'm too lazy to count frames in the footage). While game itself can run at 60, 144 or higher fps, animations stay at the same framerate. Please, take a look at all projectiles and notice that they are moving much smoother (60/144fps). I'm glad that you liked the game and that you had a swell time playing it :)
I've been playing for 7 hours and still on the second island. I wonder if I'm just that bad or I picked the wrong weapons from the store. Fantastic video Caddy!
You actually can get everything in one playthrough. The last coins are hidden in the overworld, and a few are obtained by talking to NPCs. I didn't know this either until I looked it up. There's 8 hidden, I think.
Great review Caddy!.. But there's something wrong with your review. You CAN buy every single item on the game, besides the coins you get on the Run 'n' Gun there are a few hidden around the overworld, and finding these coins alongside buying every single item is necessary to get 100% completion of the game (Which I've done). Stay beautiful Caddy!
I think you are the FIRST reviewer of this game who shows gameplay of someone COMPETENT playing. I see parries, switching weapons, damage avoidance and all the good stuff. Obviously a man who learned the game and beat it before putting up a review. Kudos to you, sir.
Saying this game doesn't use trial and error alot is objectively wrong. Like, I could go through the game and give many conrete examples of times where you are supposed to fail and learn from it, because you were supposed not to know how to react correctly the first time. It is in the very core of the game. And just to be clear, I fucking love this game.
"Trial and error" is another way to say "I'm bad at games and have to play the same boss 26 times to learn how to dodge a basic attack that has been in a million different video games by this point
Uh, there are 40 gold coins in the entire game--exactly enough to buy every single item in the shop. You get most of them from the run-n-gun levels, yes, but there are a couple hidden in the overworld and a couple more given to you by the NPCs if you do specific things like parrying 4 times in a row or finding hidden pathways around the islands. The rest of the video I agreed with. Also, the Pink Sugar and Whetstone charms affect the first parry of your JUMP, not the first parry of the STAGE. They worded it really poorly. Both are extremely useful because one lets you parry things instantly upon jumping without having to double tap jump, and the other lets you parry all damageable projectiles/enemies (not just pink things).
Dark Souls is really hard but fair, Dark Souls 2 is really hard, but in a bullshit way (although it does have it's moments), I haven't played 3, and Bloodborne is probably the easiest of the games, even though it takes place in a separate universe and is not a part of Dark Souls. Its still great though. Probably my favorite.
Challenging, but if you know what your doing and how things work, Youll be siting proud and having fun. I REEEEEALLY wanna get into the 1st game in November, but IDK which release of it I should go for. (Also getting it on PS3.)
Thank you so much for someone actually saying something about the difficulty. It looks like it isn't THAT hard. I've seen some stuff that looks difficult but not so difficult that you don't want to try it
I'm gonna be honest and say that I would buy an x box one just for this game (unless it gets ported to other consoles). This game looks so beautiful and I just have to play it no matter how mad or frustrated I get. Great review Caddy can't wait for the next one.
Actually, you CAN buy everything from the shop in one playthrough. Some NPC's give you coins for doing various tasks, and each of the 4 worlds has one hidden coin in it, so you'll have just enough to buy everything at the end.
Caddy, the coins aren't limited. You can actually buy everything in the shop throughout one playthrough. There are coins hidden in the overworld map. Theyre impossible to find unless you actually look for them, but they are there. I'd suggest finding a guide.
even the "boss gauntlet" isn't simply reused bosses boss rush style either, but 8 completely unique Minibosses where you don't even need to fight all of them depending on how you play, that level of detail is just outstanding.
I know it's a joke, but seriously, journalists comparing every slightly hard game to Dark Souls are really starting to grate on me. Newsflash: Dark Souls isn't the first hard video game ever made.
GREAT REVIEW! It's worth a 9/10 and I agree with a whole lot of your points, Caddy! It's charming with the old cartoon style and animation is so fluid. The only thing I didn't like much about this game is indeed the shopping system, I wish that one was improved... hopefully they'll make it better and enjoyable in the next Cuphead game. I will definitely buy this game on Steam one day!
Dind't he just watch the remastered Story cutscenes?. Also, I know he has talked about games on Nintendo consoles, but I think the las time was 2 years ago.
just a side note - there is exactly enough coins to buy everything on your first playthrough, but it takes finding all the secret coins (some of them are hidden on the map and some require talking to NPCs in a certain order or at certain times)
You've probably already heard about this, but you are able to get all of the items. There are secret coins hidden around the islands alongside in the levels. 5 coins in all 6 levels is 30 of them, 3 of them can be found in the overworld in hidden spots, 3 of them are given by the apple at the beginning of the game, and 1 can be found in the tutorial. with 37 coins you should be able to get everything.
But wait I managed to buy everything in my first playtrough maybe you didnt help the npc in the hub World because you can get everything in one playtrough
What a coincidence, I just so happened to buy Cuphead to see what the hype is all about and just about everything you said in this video sums up my feelings towards this game.
You actually can avoid Cala Maria's giant petrifying lasers in phase 3. All you have to do is stay close to her, stay in your small form, keep shooting at her, make sure to see the spike pillars behind her head so you can avoid those, and you'll get that "KNOCKOUT!!" in no time.
I have somehow avoided the Medusa gaze in the 3rd fase just once. It is possible but it depends on the position of the gaze as well. Also you can buy everything from the shop, you can collect 3 coins that are spread throughout the overworld and I think you can get 2 coins (excluding the red guy) from NPCs when you help them or perform a certain task.
You're able to buy everything in the shop. There are hidden coins in the overworld that are required to get if you want the rest of the items. There's an achievement for it, too.
Cuphead has become Crash Bandicoot, whuch has become Dark Souls, which has become a term for games that don't hold your hand and make everything conveniently easy for you.
Just a note, you can absolutely buy everything from Porkrind. Some NPCs have coins to give you after certain bosses are defeated and secrets are found. Those should give you enough coins to grab everything. Just in case anyone was worried.
But you actually can buy everything in the shop.
There are hidden coins throughout the overworlds and some npcs give you coins as rewards.
dingdong caddy isn't a completionist, therefore his whole review is all unjustified and wrong!
Byron Slowe what
dingdong I was making fun of the whole "one fact is wrong, therefore the whole review is wrong" type of people
dingdong So its possible to have exact amount of coins you need in the shop?
VinKe ST yep. there are just enough
Wait a minute, this isn't 2D Dark Souls...
THIS IS 1930'S CONTRA
Matthew Fleenor that actually the first time some one said that
Matthew Fleenor hell yeah
Well I would like to add contra 3 without any of the horrendous top down levels😜
@Dragon Kirby No it wasn't, Pre-Rec (RedLetterMedia) made that point already ;)
More like Gunstar Heroes,
1930's Megaman
"Journalists are calling a lot of it cheap trial and error"
But at the same time one journalist took 27 minutes to get past the *tutorial* ,sooo....
SoundwaveScizor actually most of that time was on the first level
Are you serious? Did they base their review on that?
That journalist just sounds like he's bad at games.
OckhamAsylum it was a journalist not a critic
WonderCreek he took like 3 mins but 1.30 mins (I think) on the fucking jump and dash section is unacceptable
“I’m thinking toys shirts a whole tv show”
Caddie predicted the future.
You got the thing about framerates wrong. The animations are done at 24fps, but the sprites just move around the screen at 60. Nobody other than Glen Keane would be masochistic enough to animate at true 60fps.
I only brought up Glen Keane because he actually animated that way for Duet.
I would love to see an option to actually play the game at 24fps... I understand from a gameplay perspective why it's better that it runs at 60fps, but it all looks a little disjointed by mashing different framerates together.
Or Minus8
Having never heard of it and just now looked it up.......HOLYFUCKINGSHITTHATWASART!!!!!! I probably wouldn't believe that to be 60 frames per second.
I was about to say the same thing.
Edit: My math is wrong, there's 6 Run-N-Gun stages. 30 coins is more accurate.
There are 3 islands right?
Well yeah its 3. I counted the Devil's casino as an entire island for some reason. Probably should have said areas rather than islands, but still, the casino area has a coin hidden there too.
Geez... Journalists think everything is Dark Souls.

what this guy said
13:23 You can actualy find 4 secret coins that are hidden in the map so that you wont miss any item Caddy
Soon, Cuphead will take over the world and consume us all.
There's a starman waiting in the sky sure it will.
Why are you everywhere?
Even Speedwagon is Afraid of that
Pssh. Nah. Mario and Mickey already have that market cornered. =Y
Well then...
....Someone has to go down with the ship.
*Takes of cap and puts it over heart*
Every game with any shred of difficulty is now dark souls
Josephman900 so breath of the wild is the dark souls of open world games? Mgsv is the dark souls of stealth games? Castlevania is the dark souls of 2d platformers?
lee gaming
According to some people, yes.
Josephman900 Remember when it used to be "as hard as ninja gaiden"? Yeah, i do too.
I know, it's so irritating. It devalues the Souls series by reducing them to nothing but a measurement of difficulty. Those games have so much going for them, but all anyone sees is how hard they are.
lee gaming I would actually say that Dark Souls is the Castlevania of action rpgs. Similar amounts of difficulty and same type of exploration
glad that this actually lived up to the hype since such few games do
TheCreepypro can we include Shovel Knight on that list?
IDK why, but that portrait of Caddy Daddy is all types of smug looking, I feel dirty. Heh.
Im so glad Cuphead is a huge success and it shows even with all the delays and pushed dates, these guys show so much love and dedication that they wanted it to be ABSOLUTELY Polished like Ivory.
Cuphead is what Mighty No.9 should've been
You know, good
yes
the dark souls comparison from journalist is so damn annoying. Least caddi made a disclaimer ;)
0:43 he predicted The Cuphead Show
Huh, caddy predicted the cuphead show years before it was announced! Good on you caddy!
Cuphead is the Dark Souls of Bloodborne
guts is the darksouls of protagonists
No, Youngstars are too used to games with hand holders. this is classic arcade difficulty, and btw dark souls it is not that difficult it is just like a puzzle game, shit even speedrunners don't get entertained just rolling and doing nothing.

GoodMachines dark souls aignt even hard unless if its played by a bunch of childern which i belive was the case around that time.
this comment is the darksouls of comments.

TexasReppin210 Indeed.

Just asking.
the closest thing i have seen is the caretaker for cuphead, a kettle guy
Marcus Peters Well I guess it's close enough got to wonder if he smokin some of that dank kush in that kettle body of his
There is an upcoming sequel called Jarhead
Cu Phead is looking great.

Oh man 2017 has been an amazing year for all different kinds of games!
0:43 Well Cuphead is getting his own Netflix show.
Don't want to be that guy but you can buy every item in the shop theirs 4 hidden coins in the game and the three coins you get from the apple

Have you tried ghost pepper chicken wings? They're the Dark Souls of appetizers!
Working on my review of Cuphead now, BUT I MUST WATCH.
Klay-Kremling ditto
Literally no one cares you literally who.
Same holy shit im in love with this game
You are making one? OMG so excited! I just finished the game yesterday, it's amazing
f f go back to undertale kid
Great review caddy. Plus thanks for the chat and photo at norcon it was a pleasure to meet you and your family.
What I love about that game is that even tho I watched a full play through, I was still able to play it myself and have as much fun if I went blind.
0:42 literally all those things have happened now.
Caddy! It's the month of terrarrrr.... Arrr!
Dylan Clarke his theme should be "Pirate Ghosts", because then it would be the Month of Terrarrr....Arrr: ARRRR
Edition!
Well this game does have quite a bit nightmare fuel in it :3
When you feel your pocket, and you can't feel your phone.
I've been playing for 7 hours and still on the second island. I wonder if I'm just that bad or I picked the wrong weapons from the store.
Fantastic video Caddy!

And just to be clear, I fucking love this game.
nigga please
Freshest woomy, if that was directed at me, don't worry, I'm agreeing with you, my comment was directed at the OP
Freshest woomy probably cuz there actually aren't any examples to give
"Trial and error" is another way to say "I'm bad at games and have to play the same boss 26 times to learn how to dodge a basic attack that has been in a million different video games by this point
You have many concrete examples eh? So why aren't you giving us any of them?
You can buy everything in the shop with the hidden coins, side quests from the characters you talk to around the map, and run and guns
13:50 - Congradulations, you can now get Rare Replay (30 GAMES FOR 30 DOLLARS) and Killer Instinct. Enjoy :3
Now go and rest our heroes.
We don't know if Jason died.....
I think the best compliment for a hard game is "Every time I died, I thought that it was my fault" and I think CupHead makes you say that
Uh, there are 40 gold coins in the entire game--exactly enough to buy every single item in the shop. For the first time watching caddy in 3 years or so, it is actually my birthday. Thanks caddy
there ARE enough coins to buy everything in the game. they're just hidden in the overworld
3:00 So Cuphead is like Shadow of the Colossus; collecting souls from bosses.
LOL it was my birthday when you published the video, thank you!
Is Dark Souls really even that hard?
TheGoldenFreezer yes especially 2 its bullshit hard

Thank you so much for someone actually saying something about the difficulty. It looks like it isn't THAT hard. I've seen some stuff that looks difficult but not so difficult that you don't want to try it
2 girls one cuphead
That... sounds like the title to a very bad fanfic.
I wouldn't be surprised if that was a thing already...
AAAAAAAAAAAANONONONONO
Xayte so just a regular fanfic then.
... Yes.
I'm gonna be honest and say that I would buy an x box one just for this game (unless it gets ported to other consoles). This game looks so beautiful and I just have to play it no matter how mad or frustrated I get. Great review Caddy can't wait for the next one.
Give a couple of years and 1 death will trigger the Dark Souls comparisons

The coins ARE limited. You simply get enough in a single playtrough to get them all
Great in-depth review for an incredible game
Since you haz an Xbone now, get Rare Replay. A ton of games for less than the price of one.
Did you know Solitaire is THE DARK SOULS of FREE PC GAMES
Cuphead is the new Metalslug
Trakezward Ward lol yeah except you don't die in one hit
even the "boss gauntlet" isn't simply reused bosses boss rush style either, but 8 completely unique Minibosses where you don't even need to fight all of them depending on how you play, that level of detail is just outstanding.

So f*cking beautiful :,)
Nice review man! You can buy everything in one playthrough, there are hidden coins in the overview map!
This game is absolutely astounding, I can't say the same for it's fandom.
Actually the fandom isn't too bad, compared to stuff like mlp, sonic, or Steven Universe.
Why is this a Caddy episode? Wait...
DON'T TELL ME YOU'RE CANCELLING THE CADDICAROUS SHOW TOO!
Cause Cuphead has the power to bring gamers all around together.
A much better tittle is "ITS 80'S CONTRA LOLOLOLOLOL"
Uh... Contra is 80s Contra
Majed Zmezm you mean 30s?
Sir, you meant 30s.

A Caddy episode on a Sunday? What madness is this?
So you got an XBONE? WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! DO A KILLER INSTINCT EPISODE!
Patricio Borquez It's also on PC. That's what he's probably playing it on.
Excellent review cadd.
Caddy playing a non Playstation (and non mobile) game?. YOU FOOLS, YOU HAVE MESSED WITH THE NARURAL ORDER!!!!.
oscarzx n He did play Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days on the DS.
Dind't he just watch the remastered Story cutscenes?. Also, I know he has talked about games on Nintendo consoles, but I think the las time was 2 years ago.
Last time was actually weeks ago, with one of the Crash games on the GBA.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. Well, first time in 2 years he talks about a non retro game that's not on mobile or Playstation.
If that's the case, he's messed with the Natural Order before. He's reviewed several Nintendo games.
just a side note - there is exactly enough coins to buy everything on your first playthrough, but it takes finding all the secret coins (some of them are hidden on the map and some require talking to NPCs in a certain order or at certain times)
I can't wait to get a copy of this and A Hat in Time. Platformers are fun again!
Jasmine Browneyes same here I'm excited to play cuphead and a hat in time
2:23 i feel like that wasn’t intentional but it’s still really cool LOL
You said that you couldn't buy all of the items, but the game has exactly enough coins to buy every single item.
You might have missed the hidden coins in the hub world.
It was my birthday yesterday, so happy freaking late birthday to me.
Cuphead is the crash bandicoot of dark souls
Cuphead is the Cuphead of Dark Souls games
Hardest run n gun game ever
Contra doesn't exist
OMG!! look this game what?!?!
You beat the dark souls of tutorial stages?
Caddy! You'll never be the same after you played Cuphead
It's basically a 1930's Alien Hominid on steroids
Best comparison. I forgot how hard that game was.
Caddy is my daddy...
