HI Merle! I'd look into a crow or a raven for your mystery bird noise, they can make some unexpected clucking-type noises. Also yes, goddamn Morningstar. I wish they had different colored packaging for vegan/vegetarian.
Morning Star... Loved their sausage. Did not realize it had dairy in it until well after giving up dairy. 😪 Thankfully, their Buffalo Chik Patties are safe because they are sooooo good!!
I tried the beleaf backn at a spot in Huntington Beach, CA that used to be called Vegan Nirvana. They had it in a blt 🤤 amazing! Almost creepy how baconey it tasted 🥓 lol
I live on the East Coast of Canada, and here we have these huge black birds called ravens that make a knocking wood sound sometimes. I'm not sure if there are Ravens where you live though.
Morning Star Farms - Irking vegans for a millennium! LOL They can't seem to remove the egg & milk from a lot of their products! If you can find the Thrilling Foods Vegan Bacon, it's really good. We haven't been able to find the Hooray one so far, but it looks really convincing! Love your Smelly Cat ending! 🤣
If you ever come back to this, the seitan bacon that you gave a D to, it looked actually a lot like Gyro meat. So that's something it could be used for in the future.
It's my favorite. There was a woman in my vegan group who would order large amounts every few months and we'd buy from her. I can't find it anywhere locally. It's amazing
I was just looking for Morningstar Farms Buffalo Wings, because I had them in the recent past and liked them. Haven't been able to find them in stores but saw them online just now in new packaging. It clearly says Vegan on the front of the package, but the ingredient lists shows butter, nonfat milk, and egg whites!! Now I don't know if that's what I was eating before, or they've changed the ingredients. Wow.
Update: Now I've found some online with different packaging that does NOT list those ingredients, so I don't know which version is currently available. This definitely reinforces being vigilant about ingredient lists.
I went to look for the Horray bacon, that looks so good. It looks like they may have just shut down a couple weeks ago? They did post a reciepe to make the product yourself at home though. That could be fund for you to try. :)
I also live in LA. The sound you are hearing is probably a crow. It doesn't seem like a sound that a crow would make, but it is. They make a weird knocking noise, especially in the spring. Also -- 1.) an easy way to find products locally, is to just do a Google search (i.e. benevolent bacon) then click the "images" tab. It'll usually show you the stores that have the product. For example, my search showed this product available at Vons, Ralphs, Whole Foods and several others. 2.) If you live in LA I'm not sure how you didn't know Tofurky was a brand...their products are available in literally every store, all the ones listed above, plus Sprouts, Gelsons and so many others. It's often at the end of the produce dept with the store's selection of vegan stuff. Anyway, hopefully this is helpful!
@Merle O'Neal, honestly, the first one, Light Life regular, is my current favourite, but you HAVE to either cook it in a pan, or the microwave. If you do it in the microwave, it WILL have the chewy texture you wanted. Both my late and current husbands (Omnis) loved/love it as authentic, and both were/are the "I've got to have my meat" kind of guys. (Don't @ me...) BTW, TVP IS texturised soy protein. If you buy plain tvp, it has one main ingredient, soy. For the without maple syrup people like me, Kroger's Bac'n Buds and McCormick's bacon bits are also Vegan TVP. Kroger's is the cheapest (in spite of the bastards going up in price 50% post-Covid... grrrr), at about $1.50 per seasoning-sized shaker. I used to buy their giant sized containers, but they stopped carrying that. It was an amazing time and money saving thing to use for a bacon/ham salad kind of thing for sandwiches. Morningstar bacon is the ONE thing they have yet to make Vegan (after promising all their products would be so by '22). It looks like play-dough, and gets crispy-burnt too easily. It is best microwaved, for sandwiches (but not till they veganise it). It has authentic smell and taste, tho. The SweetEarth I found to be cloyingly sweet. If one didn't care as a kid that one couldn't taste the bacon after the maple syrup hit it, one might like it. It is chewy, and doesn't really crisp up till almost burnt (and the sugars want to burn). As expensive as it is, I will NOT be buying it again. You made me think, during the seitan one, since I had not made seitan in a while. I thought, "What about adding Bac'n Buds to the dough?" Then I thought, "WAIT! Food-process them first to a powder to add to it, to both boost the protein, AND give the authentic flavour, without all the fuss of the weird marinades!" P.S. I hate the marinades with maple syrup. My savoury foods need to be savoury, unless it's Chinese crispy fried tofu, in a sweet and sour sauce, brown sugar based, with mushrooms, onions, and sliced carrots. I miss Mandarin House, in Knoxville! I am excited now to try Hooray! brand! OMG, that looks good! THANKS for being you, being here, and doing all this.
The first one, Lightlife, is the best for BLTs. Oh yeah, and not all Morningstar Farms stuff is vegan. They've been saying for 5+ years that they're working to make the whole line vegan but it hasn't happened. Tofurky is a brand that's been around forever. They also have lunch meat and sausages
Thank you for bravely trying all the different options. In My experience they can be absolutely amazing or 1,000% shoe leather.. Not a whole lot in between. You're doing God's work. 😅💕😘
Not vegan or vegetarian but I am trying to eat less meat, particularly processed meat. In the UK, I have yet to find a decent vegan bacon that I can eat (I am intolerant of both gluten and soy). There's Quorn bacon (which I think might be veggie rather than vegan), but that tastes exactly like Quorn chicken or Quorn steak - just a bit pinker.
I passed up horray thinking there’s no way they are vegan, gluten free, and soy free but they are! So expensive, but I gotta try it. They announced in September that they will be closing their doors so it won’t be around much longer.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Hooray Foods vegan bacon, but it requires special handling. Firstly, separate slices with a knife to prevent the pieces from coming apart when removing from the package. Secondly, use a toothpick to flip each piece because it'll stick to utensils and itself, and don't flip until it's firmed up a bit.
So Morningstar was the only thing I use to have access to...then litelife came along. I also remember when I first learned Morningstar wasn't Vegan and was PISSED I hadn't read the ingredients before.
I haven’t had it in so long but when i used to work in a vegetarian health food store, the sweet earth was my absolute favorite. I wonder if I could find that beleaf bacon I’m Hawaii it looked really good
I'm neither vegan nor vegetarian but I don't eat bacon for religious purposes. I'm so glad you did this video. I would definitely try some of the higher rating ones.
You should definitely try the MorningStar Farms one that she didn’t try - it has been my vegetarian staple for decades and it is easily found in grocery stores. It really is fabulous! I microwave it as the best way to prepare it (just be careful to not over cook it). I also recommend their breakfast sausage patties/sausage links. They are also fabulous and honestly it’s hard to tell the difference from real meat and those sausages! I imagine since you don’t eat pork, that you also don’t eat breakfast sausage patties/links, so these will be awesome for you too. :)

BTW, TVP IS texturised soy protein.
I audibly gasped
The first one, Lightlife, is the best for BLTs.
Oh yeah, and not all Morningstar Farms stuff is vegan. They've been saying for 5+ years that they're working to make the whole line vegan but it hasn't happened.
Tofurky is a brand that's been around forever. They also have lunch meat and sausages
Thank you for bravely trying all the different options. In My experience they can be absolutely amazing or 1,000% shoe leather.. Not a whole lot in between. You're doing God's work. 😅💕😘
yeahhh that's a good way to describe it hahaha- glad you enjoyed
THRILLING FOODS!!!!!!!!!!! The best bacon!
im so sad i missed that one
If you enjoy listening to bird songs, may i recommend the Australian Magpie. It has such a pretty warble.
Where are these tank tops from though??? 🔥
I passed up horray thinking there’s no way they are vegan, gluten free, and soy free but they are! So expensive, but I gotta try it. They announced in September that they will be closing their doors so it won’t be around much longer.
I think the bird you might be hearing is a raven, they make a lot of really cool gutteral noises.
that would make a lot of sense. I see them everywhere
Arent regular bacon bits usually just TVP?
I'm a wildlife biologist (originally from LA) and the bird sound you're describing makes me think raven or crow.
I wish you had the ‘This Isn’t’ vegan range in the US! They have two different kinds of bacon and they’re both delicious
So Morningstar was the only thing I use to have access to...then litelife came along. I also remember when I first learned Morningstar wasn't Vegan and was PISSED I hadn't read the ingredients before.
You have to try ranking different vegan breakfast sausage ❤
I haven’t had it in so long but when i used to work in a vegetarian health food store, the sweet earth was my absolute favorite. I wonder if I could find that beleaf bacon I’m Hawaii it looked really good
Not a bacon lover just a Merle lover.
light life smart bacon work great in wedge salads or bacon egg n cheeses
i hate how benevolent bacon was discontinued. why??
Where did u get the belief bacon : )
I’m so so late but have you seen people using avocado to make pasta dough?!?
TVP is the same as TSP 💖
i didn't know that!
if you do vegan jerky please make sure to include unisoy (teriyaki is my fave)...not the easieast to find tho
benevolent bacon is at sprouts i think
which one had the lowest sodium?
Because of this video I checked the label on my Morning Star Spicy Black Bean burgers and realized they weren’t vegan. Been eating them since I can’t find the Gardein Chipotle ones anymore. Trying not to beat myself up for not checking before! 😢 At least now I know!
Don't beat youorself up! It was an honest mistake!
@@MerleONealThank you for taking the time to reply. I cried for a bit just because I was disappointed in myself for not reading the label. I usually am SO GOOD about checking the labels! But life goes on and I learned a lesson that I needed to learn. 😊
Please do lunch meat and dairy, like milk and yogurt!
No Thrilling Foods bakon? :(
I didnt know it existeddddd!!
where did you find the be leaf vegan bacon??? i haven’t been able find it in yearsss
It was through Whole Foods I think!
