Have you got any epic stories with your 4WD? Share 'em in the comments and we'll have a read!
Sooty rebuild!!!!!! use everything you can no chopping but its the most signature wagon in Aus
Sooty is the only vehicle you blokes have left that’s relatable to the average 4x4 enthusiast. Even Daryl and the pony aren’t as relatable, as they were purposely bought for smash and bash. Most people wouldn’t do that to their vehicle. Unfortunately, Idk anyone who can drop a years wages on chops and aftermarket parts or new vehicles to thrash the bush with. I think most buy a second hand quality 4x4 and work their way up over time whilst building respect and admiration for their vehicle, which in my opinion is relatable with you and sooty. Don’t change a thing…
Couldn’t have said it better. Sooty is a grassroots 4x4 and we love it
I reckon you should keep driving old sooty until the wheels fall off
Keep wheeling it and when it’s old enough like milo it’ll get sent to a museum
Agreed
The only plan, should be this.
Was there the day Roothy dropped the truck off was a good send off.
Put her next to milo 😁
Best reason for a mod:
"... because I stuffed up."
She's a legend - keep her maintained as befits her mileage. The 80-series are hard to beat and getting harder to find.
"This rear bar, it's buggered." Shauno just has a way with words
Just a standard Aussie saying really
Shauno as long as you keep the content relatable your channel will continue to stay strong forever.
Don't make decisions that are too far beyond the reach for the average punter. The reason we all watch your videos is because we can realistically dream about doing what you guys do (even though we're kidding ourselves).
You shouldn't change Sooty. Keep wheeling her till you can't. You can't do a Sooty Mk2, Sooty is the one and only.
especially after seeing Dirty 30 Mark 2, we really don't want another sooty built with heaps of other cruiser parts
Dont get me wrong tho!, the dirty 30 is one hell of a 4x4 but lacks the spirit of the old one.
Bloody oath!!
@@leonclement3080 true! It doesn’t feel like the Dirty 30 and with the older headlights it takes away of the look, in my opinion...
Agreed
Shauno; You and Sooty were the inspiration to build my own 80 series here in the US!! 14 months ago I bought a 1996 triple locked 80 with 302,000 miles on it. I've bacically rebuilt it and slightly modded it into a great daily driver and trail machine. Thanks!!
It's a pretty standard Toyota...that is bush proof as you can get 💪😎 - Shauno 2021
Another note: Sooty is me fav rig 🍻👍🤙
Cheers mate! - Shauno
Sooty is iconic as this show is around the world. It's like a star leaving the series. Please do everything you can to keep it going in this show without any changes. Love this show watched all episodes' waiting for the new ones. Thank you.
Absolutely Shawno, Sooty must keep going! I bought a brand new 80 in 1997 and I’ve still got her, she is twin locked and still very capable, I love watching you enjoy your old girl so much and it makes me jealous whilst I’m stuck overseas and unable to do the same. Your keeping me well entertained and I thank you for that, long live Sooty!
I love that old girl. Nothing is better than a vehicle that you trust. The memories you share with a trusted 4 wheeler are something special.
Good on ya.
No BS, no hype, no exaggeration.
Just honest, straightforward, answers.
Always liked the fact that as successful as y’all are most of y’all’s videos have 4WD’s that most regular working people can afford. Sooty has been one of my favorites! She has been a star ⭐️ of this channel!! Much love from USA! ❤️🐞
Got my first panel damage few weeks ago doing hardest trail I had done. Trail called the Compressor in Mullan, Idaho. Video will be out tomorrow.
Saw your damage on Instagram. At least it wasn’t too bad. First is the hardest! Was that the Grouse Creek trail at Jeep Jamboree?
Great stuff Shaun. Don't change Sooty. Just keep fixing until she can't go any more or you get too old. I remember when Sooty needed the engine rebuild as my 80 was going in for the chop at CRVR&M and Darren put my 80 off while your 80 got the heart repair done. I have the Red twin cab that I am sure you will remember
Always loved Toyotas but after watching so many episodes it's the reason I finally got myself a 80! It's a gas motor but I still love it. From the US love the show keep up the awesome content!
Keep Sooty as is! She’s a beast and the soul of sooty will stay strong.
I think you should build up the new 80 as the new addition to the family, a close child of Sooty that’s built from the ground up of what you could of done to Sooty when you had more time than two weeks, make sure it’s everything you ever wanted, and then by then Sooty can rest easy
What an amazing 4wd. Love seeing this with all the "behind the scenes" feedback and challenges you have run into.
The Only reason i watch 4wd action is because of Sooty ❤️❤️. bloody legend of a car right there
Gotta agree with you shauno, if you can get all that 12v gear down in your rear seat storage setup that’d create so much space for you. Love sooty for its simplicity and reliability, up the Toyota’s!!!
Sooty is the best vehicle on the channel, what a rig!
Couldn't agree more! - Shauno
Love your honesty and humility with this video Shauno :) And amen to the bonds we build with vehicles... it truly is their imperfections that give them such character
Sooty a fantastic beast, so the Dmax following behind on most of those hard tracks, well done, cheers.
Love big soot ! Keep the clean 80 around ready for when sooty MK2 is required
Geez I like the honest you show Shauno! Not many would admit mistakes like that, that shows your integrity mate and probably the very reason why you're so successful 🍺
Best thing you could with shutty is bring her to the US and go wheeling with me. Love the Channel!
Thanks to you and the gang for providing us with such quality entertainment. It’s thoroughly enjoyable and provides hours of laughs…. And ideas! Cheers from Canada!
Keep sooty as is
Ute chop the other one with a v8 or Barra conversion, get some petty trucks on the channel
Ok sooty don’t keep up with the best of em she sets the bar she’s leading the pack most of the time lol love that rig just keeps goin
New custom rear bar with wheel carrier, jerry can holder and a drop down table behind it. A set of emu wings would be a treat aswel!
Next thing for soot or the other 80 is a set of Rhino racks and an awning, very simple bit super handy
Great chat about Sooty Shauno, I bought my 80 series last year and have built it up to a weapon thanks to watching you punt yours around, keep the old girl going mate, we love the Dirty 30 but Sooty is a legend too
Custom rear bar with Jacko, and would be good to see it on a long km trip, like the simmo or get it over to WA do some filming up the west coast
I wheel my daily driver and it's been a blast! You have to be a bit reserved on the trails but you're still out there enjoying the back country! Point of this being I would daily ol Sooty with pride! 🍻
Keep the sooty monster! Take the best of both vehicles and make the ultimate 80 cause you know she deserves some love.
Been waiting for this for so long I have watched the last rundown about 30 times I love it !!
Should keep Sooty over at Graham's place that way you can have a WA rig to do some mad trips over in the west.
I agree with Matthew, sooty needs a birthday! Aussie legends deserves it.
What a rig 🔥 such a workhorse. You could always turn the new one into a one of a kind 6x6 👍😁 keep sooty as is and enjoy wheeling it 👍
As a GU owner i have respect for the old sooty she keeps on going. If you ask me i LOVE live axle 4wds.
Arguably the best 4wd toyota ever made.
Did my alot of my learners in one of those when i was working with a mates Dad many yrs ago it was nearly new back then. I loved it had so much grunt for the size of it. Now I have a son ready for a car next year cant believe how expesnive the old beast still are. Be fun to build one up with him though. I reckon just keep driving the old girl, prob will never stop.!!!
I always wanted an 80 series diesel.
Factory turbo only and was willing to wait, which I did, for 3 years.
Ended up with a 1 owner factory turbo that had been babied by its owner.
Old bloke, retired, folder with every receipt etc.
Little did I know that I'd actually bought the FT engine, didn't know there was a difference.
Spent $5k over my budget but that car will last me forever.
Up the 80s
I really love these up close look around videos of the lads trucks, cheers Shauno 🍻
Hay Shauno, have you had a look at the area on the chassis where the steering box mounts? They are prone to cracking the chassis after heavy flexing because they were not fully welded from the factory. Easy weld repair if you know what your doing.
Just bought a triple locked fzj80 with all the fixin's. So stoked to take it on my first trip!
Late comment but definitely keep old Soot! Only thing I think she needs are some upgraded brakes! Seen multiple times where the brakes were not adequate for you. Maybe some better/beefier steering with hydro assist after that but BRAKES! BRAKES!
She is a beauty. Epitome of an offroader. Sooty should run as long as she wants...after her active career she should be part of an exhibition. Great truck!
Thanks for the walkthrough with sootty and it gives me an idea on how to set up my 4x4 exterra and my Titan
I wish our older vehicles here in Canada would live as long as the Australian rigs, 15 years down the road and our cars are just piles of rust. Love Sooty, keep her maintenance up so we can enjoy her getting beat up :) lol
Good tough and simple build. Space cab 80s are nice !! Chop the MK2
Can’t wait for the next rig rundown… should be the 200 next or the old farm truck !
Great show I don't know how I would kill time when I'm not 4wding or camping. Also the things you learn from it, it could save your life being prepared learning from your mistakes.
Man that thing sounds good before coffee! Love sooty mate its just a good honest faithful vehicle.
Leave the beast as is. You have plenty more cars you own that you can't seem to stop changing.
Great video Shaun.
We love watching Sooty!!! whatever you do with it in the future dont put a auto in!!! put a microphone near the tail pipe when she is pullin hard! We live in Canada and Sooty is the star of the show keep up the good work
I reckon just keep wheeling sooty until or if she gives up, love watching the sooty 80 specially because I have an 80 as well.
V8 sooty and the ultimate rear bar also I reckon you gotta make a 4x4 boat trailer would love to see your boat out and about on tje tracks
re: Roof rack. Preach brother! I went into great lengths to get my swags from the roof into the cabin, minus 40 kilos on the roof. Saves be almost 5l of fuel per 100k and less weight up there, less worry when off-camber.
Soooty Rebuild she deserves it..Absolute beast that car
With what you know now, and the frame of mind you are in regarding centre of gravity, you should take all the best parts of Sooty and make a Super Sooty with the newer 80. Park up the shell of Sooty next to the old Dirty 30 and start up a Whale history museum... p.s I love my Patrol wagon but I am so jealous of all you Cruiser people and your drop down tailgate. 🤤
what a weapon indeed.I think you should keep wheeling sooty the way it is and see how long it will last . goes to show you just how real the hype about old toyotas really is
Shaun’s got a lot to answer for regarding the used prices of these!
True lol
Sorry! I should keep it quiet just how good 80s are. Shauno
Shock Customs rear bar? Other than that just keep maintaining it, sooty has produced lots of hours of enjoyment for the 24/7 community, greatly appreciated fellas 🤙
Love the soot mate, but wait till it also rusts out then get that hd-t or ft into a clean 105... love ya work!!!
Shauno keep Sooty as she is she is a legend! Perhaps it would be cool to follow your next adventure from the time you leave the house till the time you get home on the next big adventure. Perhaps a Mr Whale uncut if you will.
Just started watching this channel but I've clocked like 10 hours now I'd reckon 😂😂😂😂 learning heaps as I'm just getting into the 4wd scene
One thing I have learnt is that I am never doing Gunshot. Appreciate Shaun's honesty.
Keep wheeling Sooty please.
You should keep sooty and turn the new 80 into a comp truck
To open the hood, you can just get a piece of high tensile wire and put a hook on it. Then push it through the grill with the right bend on it and catch the latch. Takes a bit of mucking around but works.
I love the Idea of a Sooty Mk2... Seeing how you would do the build of this classic truck with a couple of years experience under the belt and the new technology and goodies available today. Could make an interesting series
Sooty Mk2 coming up
So excited what Shauno will do on this one!
SOOTY REBUILD!!!!! SOOTY DESERVES IT JUST NO CHOPPINGGGGG!
Wicked rig Shauno.
I bought an 80 because of this channel
I just luv the simplicity of soot good honest truck shows you don't need all the bells and whistles to get around all the best tracks and camp out weeks on end.
Very nice setup! Love watching y’all’s videos!
Great Video - I have one the same parked over there in Aus - Im in NZ :( - was a Nissan fan up to that point - although my first 4WD was a FJ40- heaps of people try to buy it off me but hoping to do Cape York
if Sooty is rebuilt, it would be the same story as the Dirty30. The soul will not be the same. Build the other 80 into a monster crawler or something😅
Keep her going as she is mate!
Great video yet again. My response on your other 80 would be to keep it as stock as possible and have it go with the D-max on a city slicker off road vehicle. Maybe do a few of those series’s? Loving the content. Great show and can hardly keep it together for the next episode!
just do up the second one and alternate the trips between the two`. that way instead of thrashing one to death and moving on, they both last as long as you do. on top of that if something happens to one, there is no rush to fix it (the right way) for the next outing. if funds permit, always have a backup of your favorite vehicle.
Keep wheeling it dings an scratches are all memory’s 👍👍
G'day Shauno, one thing that always keeps me wondering, why do people buy a wagon then rip the backseats out? Would a single cab ute not make a better canvas to build a vehicle for the tough tracks? Yes you have your chopped 200 but say something like a single cab 75/79 series or an Xtra-cab Lux with a half canopy or even a full canopy with 4 doors, front two for electrics/fridges and rear two for camping/storage would that not make more sense? Cheers for the insight into Sooty
Sooty is too iconic to change tbh. Change and moving foward is cool but especially if you have another 80 I reckon let it all out on that and leave sooty as it's famously known 🤙
Try something different with the other 80 you haven’t done before! Rebuild the 1fz and boost it and use it for all your tough trucks you like doing!
Id like to see sooty mk2 keep the rear seats, i think a lot of people (including myself) would be keen to see how to best utilise the space available in a wagon whilst still keeping the rear seats :)
I'd leave sooty the way it is mate and with the other one I would turn it into a monster like Jesse's winch truck for insane trips and keep sooty turning for the technical stuff like you have been! I wouldn't change sooty at all, it's a signature vehicle in aus! Keep up the good work guys
A 'Sooty MKII' like the revival of a beaten up Dirty 30 would be mint as! Would love to see Old Soot with a fresh lick of paint, new roof and 12V set up.
Mate keep sooty its the hole reason why i got into 4wdriving and going to Toyota tell you what would be a great project for ya a old 90 series prado with a live axle swap they are supposed to be weapons off road with a live axle swap i own a stock 90 series and i can almost do some of the crap the 2 inch cars can do i think it would be a change and there still very reliable even the petrol 5vzfe motors are in them which is what i own over all i love my 4wd i still amazes me the places it can get too stock
Keep the original, just give Sooty a birthday for eg. new rear bar, redesign the 12V layout, bit of panel work and some fresh Raptor coat, maybe even get it professionally detailed so Sooty is nice and clean and ready to get covered in mud for the next 500,000kms 🤙
My 99' 4Runner with the petrol 5VZ-FE is pushing 600k,km but im in the US so its over 370k miles still running strong and smooth as ever. wish we had a TD
I love it when i get home crack a beer and 4WD247 drops!
I bought a brand new 80 series GXL back in the day, it was the first of the turbo diesels. I drove the 80 about 20km back to my workshop. I fitted a CAV fuel filter and water separator, before the factory filter. I sold the vehicle to a mate of mine that says he is going to get buried in it. The old girl never had a smooth idle. My mate blew a head gasket in the old girl after many years of service. He decided to get the injectors and the fuel pump overhauled. When they stripped the pump they found grey sludge in the pump, meaning the contaminants were in the pump from new .
Here's a thought, take out the 1-HDT from Sooty, put it in the 47. Get a 15B-FT, put it in Sooty. 4 cylinder, more torque and MORE space under your hood
Made a drinking game of “ well that one was my fault” now I’m drunk at 8 am haha great video!
Bought back the old intro music, that’s nostalgic
i reckon keep sooty going till the chassis splits like the 30 or it gets rolled or something, then transfer the motor and all the good bits over to the new car. always good to see old sooty go!
Next mod for sooty - Custom rear bar and rear scrubbies. some more offset wheels would be mint too :)
Nah keep wheeling sooty, I love seeing her tackle the hard tracks!
Have a look at the cruiser company rear bars! They have an awesome rear approach angle!
I'll have to check them out - Shauno
