  • I have a great idea for a painting of a Snowy Owl. And where I want to start, is out in nature, trying to find one on the fantastic Manitoba prairies. Join me for a bit of history about my journey as an artist, finding some inspiration in the field, and my thoughts and feelings about creating the final painting.

    Listening to your story at the first of this video mirror my own story so closely as I was growing up. In my early years, I would draw everything and anything, with no real focus on any one subject. Then a friend of mine I worked with at the New Brunswick Museum introduced me to the works of Robert Bateman, and I was hooked!!! Shortly after that, he had a show and book signing is my hometown of Saint John, and I went. I nervously stood in line to get my book signed, and when it was my turn, I asked if I could get my picture taken with him. I think he could sense my incredible excitement, as he stopped the book signing, and took me over to the other side of the gallery to the only original painting he had there for the show, (Tundra Swans) to use as the background for our photo. I didn't go into painting at the time, but it did inspire me to become a wildlife photographer, and now that I am taking early retirement, I am watching your videos and others to learn how to paint from my photographs. Anyway, I just felt like sharing my story with you to let you know I appreciate your journey and story, and your videos.

      Thank you so much for sharing that experience. That is a great to hear and it's fantastic that he took the time to go over to one of his originals for a photo with you. And it's great that it inspired you to pursue wildlife photography! I've found a great joy in photographing wildlife and taking those images back to the easel to create artwork from my references. I'm so happy to share my journey and process of my art and passion for wildlife in the hopes that I can be part of that inspirational journey for others, just as Bateman has been for me. Thank you for watching and for sharing your story!

    Wow that is beautiful, you are so lucky to have them wild where you are, we do not have the vast species of owl anywhere like you do there here in the UK, you have inspired me to paint an owl, i have only been oil painting since Feb last year and have done many animals, but an owl is one i want to have a go at, so thank you Joseph you are awesome!

      Thank you so much!! I feel very fortunate to be able to see Snowy Owls in the wild. Even if I'm not planning on painting one, I really like going out there to try and see them. I'm so glad this has inspired you to paint and owl! They are amazing birds to having in paintings - so much character and mystery in the way they look. I appreciate you watching and I hope that your owl painting goes very well!

    I cannot believe the negative comments. Art is more than the painting you are creating. It's also about what gets you to do what you do. You are an amazing artist and love the whole video. Oh wow! Thank you so much for this!! It really means a lot to hear that, and I am very grateful for your encouragement!! Yes, art is so much more than just the painting, which is what I wanted to share in this video. And especially for me, when my art is inspired by being in nature and having an incredible experience with an animal - I want to share that story and hope that it inspires others in their creativity. And I'm so glad that it was inspiring for you!! I will definitely be making more videos! I'm working on another video similar to this where I share my experience in nature and then the painting I create from it. I hope it can be another source of inspiration, as well as some insight into my process of creating art that goes beyond just what happens at the easel.

    I just watched this film from Aug 13. Just a stunning painting Joseph. You captured the owl in its element. I can feel the cold and starkness. The lighting on the feathers and tree bring it to life. Thank you again for the inspiration. I love to stand behind the artist, so to speak, and watch the brush strokes, along with the planning and final execution of the work.

      Thank you Michael!! I'm happy to show my process and a more in depth look into my painting and interest in wildlife. That cold Manitoba winter and low afternoon sunlight was such a large part of this painting I really wanted to share that experience both in the field and at the easel. I'm glad it was inspirational! Thank you so much for the support and for watching my video!!

    I loved this video. I like the back ground information on how you come to obtain your subjects. Disregard the people who say otherwise!

      Thank you!! Really appreciate that! For this one I really wanted to show everyone where a lot of my work starts, which is out in nature. Woooow this is good, my question is why do you use white plate unlike other artist that encourages to use a mid value toned palette???

    • @JosephKoensgen
      @JosephKoensgen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much!! I'd say the reason is that I've done it this way for such a long time, I'm used to gauging my colours on a white palette and then painting on a white surface, so over time it's just become my preference. Having said that, if you are more at the beginning of your art journey, I would make the recommendation of using a neutral grey palette that would help gauge colours and values a lot better. Though you could also experiment with both and see what works best for you.

    • @user-ez1to7cc8f
      @user-ez1to7cc8f ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JosephKoensgen thank you so much, but I think I was doing better on white than toned i find Colors looking different from the palette to the canvas

    • @JosephKoensgen
      @JosephKoensgen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's why I continued with using a white palette, so that the colours would look the same when I put them on the painting. So if that's working for you then that's great!

    Owl # 2 is female. The features of her are the stribes on the top of her head, and on the rest of her body, whereas the males are mostly entirely white. Snowy owl couples stay together for their whole lifes.
