That's great. It is such a useful and under-utilised scheme.

You should be able to get Maths and English Level 2 for free through the military as it is a requirement to promote to certain senior ranks.

Got any advice for someone joining the ranks at 27?

Get fit before joining, the younger lads/Girls in training will look to you for guidance be prepared to be the agony aunt/uncle. Older recruits bring a lot to the party with your life experience and hopefully maturity. Be prepared that the instructors may be younger than you some older recruits some times struggle with this, but enjoy yourself it is a great career choice, all you need is common scene, be able to laugh at your self and the will to succeeded.

I'd just echo what Ian said. You might find training a bit harder in terms of being told what to do by someone 3-4 years younger than you but at the same time you'll be looked upon to set the standard, mentor and look after the younger guys amongst your platoon.
Keep an open mind, take every opportunity you can and make it a positive and understand that there will be times where you will think, "what have I done?"
Hopefully you've done plenty of research into the job you're hoping to join and know the pros and cons that come with that. No job is perfect and there are tradeoffs with everything. Understanding those and using them to your advantage will separate you from the whiners.
I would also say, be ready financially, especially if you have kids and/or a partner. You could be taking a pay cut. In training, after deductions, you're looking at just over £1000 a month. That could be difficult if you are also trying to provide for a family at home. Set those affairs in order before you start.

@@thesavvysquaddie Thank you both, I'm going in as an ammunition technician so in my opinion I've chosen a good trade. I'm a fairly switched on individual and may even seek a late entry commission if my time as a soldier goes well. Although I don't know if doing time in the ranks is more beneficial to developing your military career than just going down the direct entry path. My personal opinion's that it is.
Overall it's good to hear that being a bit older can have its advantages when you first join.

@@flyinghigh2701 I worked in ROAC/RLC bomb disposal for 2 years in Cyprus, I was not an AT just a No2, it is a good choice a very small group of people where everyone knows everyone, I joined as a soldier and got recommended for a commission twice, never took the opportunity, and I am glad I didn't, as a LE officer who knew me said "you will have a first rate career as a soldier or a second rate career as an officer" which at the time disheartened me but as I finished a WO1 he was 100% correct. Don't worry about LE commission yet, the AT course is a hard one just concentrate on passing Basic and then your AT course, if you have what they are looking for someone will have a word about a commission in due course,.
