is it required to be a coder for a product manager, say if I am a non coder who has worked for client success and conversion rate optimisation what more can I learn to be a product manager for SAAS?
Not having direct reports e.g. people management is in my opinion one of the biggest benefits of a PM role. High salary and high up in the hierarchy but not having to manage people is great. :-)
@@laskost At tech companies. Big tech companies pay Product Managers a lot (salary, stocks, bonus) and then regular or non-tech focused companies still pay them a good amount (prob just salary + bonus).
Yeah, I am currently a manager in Customer Care trying to break into PM. I have direct reports and am kind of excited about not having them. I might miss it though.
You are absolutely right on the skills needed for Product Manager. You don't have direct reports but still responsible for delivering the end product/service on time.
Just transitioned from Project Management to my first Product Manager position at a new company. Your videos have been very helpful in giving me the insight into the life of a product manager that really encouraged me to pursue this career path. Thanks for all of your helpful info.
I feel like the direct report point is the most subtle. A PM fundamentally is a skilled, personable facilitator. The upside is you get to wear many hats and make things happen. The downside is you're not directing anything, you're facilitating.
Looking to make a transition to Product at my company this year. Couldn't have found this video at a better time. The hardest one you mention for me is being in the spotlight, but def something I want to work on because I often find myself there even when I avoid it. Might as well get good at it!
Your video actually checked off all the boxes of why I want to be a PM. I’ve worked in accounting for 7 years and I’m now getting a Master’s Degree with my elective focused on product management.
Huge congratulations to you, Amy! Even I am planning to transition to Product Manager. It would be so kind of you, if you can also share your path to preparation. Thanks
Awesome video! Handling stakeholders can be a very tough thing to do as a PM (depending on your organization and political environment).. sometimes as a PM you are left with all the responsibility to deliver without the authority to execute.
out of context but your hair and makeup is actually too good! and thanks for highlighting the downsides of being a PM too, got me pondering if it's my cup of tea!
Thanks for sharing Alisa. I just started a role as a product owner and I can totally relate. I have created a video on what product owners do in case you are curious :)
these points make me want to be a PM even more- those things you mentioned is actually the opposite of my characteristics. the PM role entirely reflect everything about me!! thnx alot to ur guidance!
Love this video. It reaffirmed that I SHOULD be a PM. I am OK being on board with the strategic direction, I like fluidity, lean into the big responsibility, don't mind the spotlight (I was in Sales for 7+ years)
You hit on some good points- especially for PMs that might be managing digital products that support the core product, or a physical product. It might be a supporting effort and you don’t always own the p&l. Great vid!
You are right, the product manager role assumes you work 24/7. Initially, it was very tempting to be a PM, but then I realized it requires lot of work, generally just sitting with engineers and make sure they do their work. Regarding a pay? It isn't such high as lead developers make. One good thing is you do not need to code and be a very technically savvy, but still you can't be a person who has no clue as a sales person.
I found your channel couple of days ago. Went through almost all the videos. Thank you for in detail analysis and tips. I was wondering if you have any experience with Product Managers in a Movie Industry. I'm a film director myself, but as you know, there is no money in film industry unless you work in Hollywood. So my understanding is that a film director is like product manager,( having a vision, leading a team). Tech and movies nowadays are so connected, because of streaming, so I was wondering if you have any tips on being a PM in Neflix, or Amazon prime, Disney + etc. Thank you

Brilliant! Would love to see more about how you format these presentations to different types of stakeholders. Do you have particular templates (narrative structures more than designs) or lessons learned from doing this? How do you make sure they’re high quality if you’re having to do them all the time?
Having direct reports is great it means you have grown as a PM when it happens , however whats more important is to grow in your role as PM to ensure that you are ready to lead people .In my opinion people should not rush to have direct reports , leading people is not easy for some PMs because leading people means you no longer just responsible for your own performance as PM , you are also responsible for other people’s performance as well which can be a challenge . PMs are great influencers , they have to influence a lot of people but it takes more than influence to lead people , 10 years doing the same role in the same or at different companies and experiencing different challenges prepares you exactly for that .There is nothing worth witnessing than a PM who is extremely adept at all aspect of the PM profession …. people management /project management /product management / Creating a vision /clear understanding of their product and the various metrics etc. you name it
It’s a newly created role to offload the leadership of its responsibilities by scoping a job like that. Boss hires a PM and forces them to run the business for you while taking all the profits himself.
Great video, really interesting! Do you have examples/suggestions of careers that relate to product (other than product manager) that might be good to pursue if, for any of the reasons mentioned in the video, you don’t think product management is right? 😊
Here are some product related roles that I’ve come across: product analyst, product owner (works closed with engineering in and agile environment), and UX designer or researcher (if you’re more creative).

What's a similar career to PM but for introverts - people who still like to manage products, brand, marketing stuff & like the ever-changing nature of the work, but don't want to constantly have to do presentations and be in the spotlight?
What about PM at non-tech field.. Like pharmaceutical or cosmeceutical company.. Could you please give an insight on non tech or more of a life science field
