    For people looking to becoming a product manager, Chloe's experience is very American/Silicon Valley-centric. Many PM roles won't have the same level of variety, hectic schedule or pressure. It's highly dependent on the company, industry and region you work in. Do your research on the specific role you're applying for.

      @@tshidirusson5100 Fintech is brutal. A friend of mine had a fintech start-up and I helped him for a while and it was incredibly intense - much more so than Silicon Valley companies.

      It's also a big company experience. Smaller companies are a bit more flexible and require other skills she didn't mention. I'm not trying to take away from Chloe at all, btw.

      As a PM in biotech, I confirm! PM in biotech is much much MUCH more sales oriented. Hell, one of my individual KPI’s is $X million sales for a new product in its first year, this requires building a business plan that includes a sales strategy and marketing campaign all from scratch and done by PM. Sometimes lowkey unreasonable (but we love it)

      I will also have to agree with this. Been in the industry at much larger organizations for 10 years and it definitely is dependent on the company and industry. Not taking away from Chloe, but there is definitely more into it than what's on the video

      @@chloeshihYou’re absolutely correct. Many hours go into preparing this. Sometimes techies don’t understand that.
      When I worked as a business analyst, once upon a time a Delivery Manager told me it shouldn’t take long to update the text of a user story. But, I have to tell him that updating text may not take time, but arriving at the text is what needs time as we need to understand detailed requirements from the client, ask probing questions etc . I told him that techie guys will simply say that they are developing what’s been told, but I need to ensure I ask the right questions to arrive at complete set of requirements.
      Product management is an important role, the folks that ridicule it are not humble and must be ignored. They’ll retire one day from private sector jobs without pension. Will then see what they’ll do. Doing business needs humility, being a Product Manager is like running a mini-startup in a big
      Company. That needs humility, customer empathy. Arrogance will not help anyone becoming an entrepreneur. So, if those techies want to just work and retire and then do nothing, they can survive somehow but if they want to start their own business, they have to give up arrogance.

      ah yeah or they look down on the job bc it's just a bunch of meaningless work. the amount of hate comments i get from salty tech people about how meaningless this role is is astounding!

    • @sachinkumar-iy3ic
      @sachinkumar-iy3ic 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chloeshihreally? Tech folks say meaningless stuff?
      Those must not be good techies, I mean they wouldn’t have humility and customer empathy. Such arrogant techies can make meaningless comments. I mean a question to them is what will they code for if there is no product and business case in first place? They can’t sit at home and just code on their machine. In the end, monetization matters, they need money to pay rent/mortgage and other expenses. So, if the company where they are working doesn’t pay, will they continue there? Now, for the company to pay, there needs to be a product or service from where they earn. I understand developers will say it’s not a big deal to think ideas but it’s tough to code and deploy. My question to them is: yeah, it’s not easy to code, but will you take responsibility for failure of a product or low sales etc? If the answer is “Yes”, then they can criticize but if the answer is “No”, clearly they can’t lead. Because, with leadership comes accountability. Developers sometime like to hide behind excuses, it seems. They need to understand that it’s a team work. TEAM stands for Together everyone achieves more. Business isn’t run by demonizing other functions, why aren’t so many developers able to set up their own business? That’s because they are still living in a world where it’s like: i did my piece and now I don’t care about the larger picture. Only people who care about larger picture can become entrepreneurs. I want to let developers know: You won’t get pension in private sector jobs, so if you want some additional income, you’ve to think Business and then use your skills accordingly. Yes, they can use their grip on programming or other technologies and make something, but remember one thing always: Only humble techies become entrepreneurs, and not every techie becomes that. So, it’s a large pool of people and not everyone can become an entrepreneur because it takes a lot to be one. It needs humility, which a lot of them don’t have. So, they give up. Moreover, if they start somehow, they’ll come in the same boat as a Product Manager because then they’ll have to get the work done by techies and just like they were arrogant, they can face arrogant techies in their startup also if they manage to start one. But, normally I’ve seen: Arrogant techies won’t be able to start any business. They’ll have to retire one day without pension, not sure what they’ll do then.

    1:44 Threads being launched = product
    Voice memos on hinge = feature or a feature set
    If you are a new or aspirational product manager, knowing the difference is crucial to managing your expectations from a role. In the above example, you need a strong grasp of gtm (go to market) for threads, not so much for the Voice memo.

    She doesn’t have to specify this, but for people excited about the pay, those sign-on, bonuses and equity are from the big league players in tech. If you’re going out for a role with a start up or even establish corporate brand then those numbers look very different.

    As a Mom of 2 young kids and a PM at a startup, I can say you hit the nail on the head with this explanation. The role is very overwhelming at times, and feels even more overwhelming as a working mom. If only I knew how to write code, life could possibly be much simpler...lol.

    • @MohanRaj-vp1zt
      @MohanRaj-vp1zt 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Do u really think that coding looks easier than PM? If that was the case, why do we have 1000s of youtube channels just for cracking coding interviews? Why we don’t have the same for PM roles ?

    • @mirandalee7408
      @mirandalee7408 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      we actually do have the same for PM roles. PM interviews are gruelling and very challenging. there’s thousands of these videos, and even entire books on how to crack the interview. take a quick search and find out for yourself.

    • @rolandrodriguez
      @rolandrodriguez 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MohanRaj-vp1zt Yes coding is easier than Product Management. As a developer I’ve shipped multiple products over 25 years for various companies including Microsoft. I served in an architectural role on the Azure product team participating in the launch of v1 of the platform in 2009. Today I’m a Principal Technical Product Manager at AWS. Where are the 1000’s of videos for Product Management? Dispersed among the thousands of videos for business strategy, systems design, statistical analysis, value proposition design, research techniques, UX design and usability, time management, productivity hacks, economics, graphic design, psychology and more. Often times I write code on the weekends to give my brain a break so it can focus on one logical thing. It’s like taking my brain for a walk or doing a crossword puzzle.

    Mom of a teen and toddler, PM at a big corporation for Consumer experience. Which if anyone knows, Consumer is the HARDEST area. Everyone wants in on it. If it wasn’t for my husband having so much flexibility to do all the care taking and parenting there’s no way in heck I’d be in this role without crying daily. I’m always re-evaluating if I want to change functions to have a better work/life balance.

    We tend to use the Epics and Stories as the source of truth vs the PRD. Then we build out a PRD skeleton in our wiki by linking the tickets. Helps a lot with the time sink of maintaining the PRD and helps the PM from getting too into solutioning.

    • @chloeshih
      @chloeshih  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      gotcha - we go from the PRD to the project task management tool - whether that's jira or asana. we also link to the tickets, but the process has varied tremendously by team so i don't have anything standard to say haha

I am a PM on a dev team of 3.5 people, and I'm dying under the weight of UAT testing on top of all documentation, meetings, marketing assets, project management, etc. Have you also been responsible for testing, and do you have any recommendations? I know this is social media and everything looks perfect in this video so I shouldn’t envy that but I’m sitting here thinking I wish I can get a grip on my emotions and move forward happy and confident in my life as you appear in your video.
