I'm just barely 17 and have been accepted into my dream school, my dream career is to be a Product Manager, specifically at Apple. But now, I have to reverse engineer my approach as I step foot into this new chapter of my life at U of AZ. I am a highly entrepreneurial, driven, ambitious and empathetic person who would love such a role. Growing up without my biological parents, and being abused and neglected all of my life, I know deeply what failure is like. But it is, in my belief, the raw stimulus for growth and success as you mentioned, so I hope that the PM role might suit me. Anyway, I'm wondering what I should major in, I'm thinking about marketing bec I love photography and selling something people admire, love and think is aesthetic. Also, what are some top certification courses or programs that would benefit me? I know this is a lot, and I thank you for reading all the way down here. I just want some tailored advice if possible. I appreciate your hard work and videos and I hope you'll have a blessed life!❤ I'm thinking about communicating with software engineering and design majors upperclassmen who are like seniors in order to help me build an app. I'm not a technical person at all, have almost no interest in learning coding, but I'm good at statistics and data analysis. Anyway, I want to create an app while in college under the product life cycle steps from conception to completion. Specifically, I want to create a food and cosmetic app that you can download on your phone, scan stuff in stores, and figure out the nutrition profile, how organic/healthy the product is, etc. I believe there is a great need for this. If the plan works and the app is developed and people like it, I would like to sell the idea to Apple, and kind of wiggle my way into PM role at Apple; my dream! Any thoughts about my networking and development strategy. Thank you once again!
Nice video giving a realistic appraisal of some of the difficulties of being a Product Manager (I particularly related to the idea of responsibility without the power to enforce delivery - only once in my 20 years of Product Management have I also owned the delivery team). We learn to become master negotiators and diplomats 🙂

Hey! Great video, since most videos out there just talk about the rosy side of being a PM. With all the responsibility and the visibility, the job sounds kinda daunting. How did you manage the pressure and fallout of failure?
Great question! The best way for me to deal was to lean on people around me. Constantly validate direction with other product people, customer success, sales, support, and of course customers. That way, someone could guide me in the right direction if one of my features was off-track! Also - you just kind of get used to having the increased visibility, and once you find your footing as a PM, the pressure definitely feels less intense (because you are more confident in the work you're doing)!

I'm a software engineer and honestly going over your head to the director is a dick move even if you're new tbh. I've never done this for any PM. Saying that, I've also never worked at a company where they just leave new PMs to sink or swim on their own, so we know whatever _any_ feature is prioritized by the PM has been vetted by company-wide PMs and UX, usually with a contract already attached.
It's a relatively new and frankly strange concept of hiring so inexperienced and young PMs. Most of big tech (still) require you to have a decade of engineering or equivalent before becoming a PM. And for good reason.
Ngl doesn't make a lot of sense why engineering are going to product director. If the product director can actually understand engineering well enough about a specific product, then they are the product manager and you are an associate/assistant project manager.
