      I'm interested in signing up for some PM courses that teach general skills such as road mapping, sprints, Tableau, SQL as well as building a personal project. But a friend told me that paying for any courses is just a waste of money and I should just focus on my project. Would you agree?

    • @AlisaHaman
      @AlisaHaman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Edefrem That's a great question! If you're able to land product interviews (and even a job) without doing any of those training - that's awesome! However - if you find it hard to land an interview or job, it might be worth the money to invest in one pragmatic marketing course, or a scrum master certification. Also - that's great that you're working on your own project! Good luck with it!!!

    - do you still work as a product manager (PM)?
    - Is 29 late to become a PM ?
    - I created a mini SQL project via TH-cam but I don`t have any practical experience. Plus, I've got design background (illustrator, photoshop etc..) and I know the basics of Python programming language and PowerBI + I`m an experienced customer support specialist + master`s in tech management. So, I think this is the most suitable role for me. What do you think ?

    • @AlisaHaman
      @AlisaHaman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Dhwani! It can feel really hard... Even as an experienced PM, my job searches can take many months. You can grow your PM skills by reading PM books, maybe thinking of a market problem and ideating on a solution (doing customer interviews, mocks... etc.), and you can also consider taking courses (like Pragmatic Marketing). I would say in order to land an interview, you have to be persistent, and write good cover letters that explain why you would be a great PM even if you don't have traditional PM experience. I hope this is helpful. You got this!

    Hi! I have a background as a journalist and spent my undergrad years interning at newsrooms as a reporter. I realized that I want to switch into product management this semester, as I enjoy coding, but I have no business background. I’m taking AI courses and am almost done with an interaction design certification from UCSD. How would you recommend building experience my senior undergrad year + how to get a product management internship? Would a masters help?

    • @AlisaHaman
      @AlisaHaman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's really cool that you are making the switch! First - given you will have coding and interaction design certifications I would say that you are already a great candidate for *at least* a product intern role. You don't have to always have coding experience, but it never hurts :) You could also consider taking a business course if there is one offered at UCSD, though to be honest, you may not need it (and I also don't think you need a master's). I would recommend that you read some product books (highly recommend Inspired by Marty Cagan, which emphasizes some of the business aspects of product), joining product Slack communities, and maybe attending ProductCon virtual conferences - which will all help you understand the product role really well. Then, I would say you're probably ready to start applying!

      I'm afraid I don't know about product management outside of Europe. However, I would give you the tip to look for jobs or internships in product management at larger newspapers or publishing houses. Here you could certainly shine due to your studies and your background as a journalist.
      I did an apprenticeship in retail before I started my studies. During my studies, I did several internships and part-time jobs within the same industry, but in different jobs. Because of my industry experience, I was able to get a job in the same industry in product management. I don't need programming skills for my job. It is in the service sector. Hi Alisa! Your video is very inspiring and informative. Did you just make a landing page with the mockup you prepared or did you work on a problem? How did you present this to the company you were interviewing for?

    • @AlisaHaman
      @AlisaHaman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aw I'm so happy it was helpful! I actually had to do a presentation of the mockup, so just took screenshots and then put those screenshots in my slide deck! A lot of PM interviews have some sort of presentation round, where you either present on your product portfolio, or present on a hypothetical product idea!

    So you do not need coding skills/knowledge to be able to land a job as a PM in IT? And do certifications really value more than all of the other skills?

    hi! i’m a new grad nurse & im alrdy annoyed at how stagnant the field of medicine is. it seems like it’s the most work with the least compensation. what would you recommend for someone transitioning to tech from healthcare?

      Look into being a healthcare business analyst or even a data analyst & pivot from there.

    Hey what would you suggest for a DBA switching over to PM?

    • @AlisaHaman
      @AlisaHaman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the question! If you are already in a tech company, I would suggest meeting with PM's at your company to learn about the job. There are also database products where you have domain expertise and could transition more easily into a PM role. Something like MongoDB for example!

    Hi Alisa, I just found your channel and I'm loving it! I have a degree in MEM from Duke and have about 5 years of experience working as a data/business data analyst. I would love to switch to PM because I find it very exciting and also would like to switch to something a little less technical. Since I've already been working for some years now, I don't want to start off as an associate. Any tips on how I can switch without essentially "demoting" myself? I have experience ideating, building and maintaining PowerBi dashboards and I know that is considered a transferrable skill! Let me know if we can connect on LinkedIn for the same or would love to see a video from you on this topic! :)
