  • Hey Guys!
    I know this video has been really requested and has been a long time in the making! Aside from life being crazy...I just needed a little bit of time to get over the feather apocalypse haha! But I'm so excited to share with you how I tailored these Ikea ektorp sofa (and loveseat) slipcovers to my pottery barn sofa (and loveseat)!
    I hope you all have amazing weeks and remember that you are amazing and more capable of doing things than you think. Don't be afraid to try something new or something you think may be difficult. The only person holding you back from accomplishing what you want in life, is you. If you just let yourself be your true amazingly beautiful and talented self, there is nothing that can stand in your way!!
    I hope you all have amazing weeks and I'll see you in the next video!
    Laters!

    Btravo!! Looks beautiful!! My couches were very similar to Ikea's so I ordered the long couch, loveseat, chair, and ottoman slipcovers (super cheap on eBay). I had to basically rebuild my ottoman to make it fit because it was way too small, I busted quite a few seams trying to get the bodies on, and I had to work myself to death to get the cushion covers on. lol My arms were not only thicker, but also deeper...that was most of my problem was my darn arms were deeper...otherwise, I would have had a good fit, albeit a little tight as my set is more plush ;) In the end, I threw the couch away, and bought a new sectional with chaise....and now use the loveseat, chair, and ottoman in the kids' playroom using slipcovers I sewed together using glorious bleached white drop cloths!

    Whoa, will you please move in to be my next door neighbor?? I have Mitchell Gold furniture and literally just spent $1600 on replacement slipcovers for my sofa and two chairs and that was from a company that makes them for all makes and models. If I would have ordered from Mitchell Gold it would have been $1400 just for the sofa. I think this is above my sewing level but I'm tempted to try it. You're seriously amazing.

    Using ' throws ' is a lot quicker !
    If this is just an everyday sofa , seems like a lot of work !
    Also it is always worth washing the IKEA cover first , as they
    do tend to shrink , making the end fit a lot tighter !
    If you now wash your altered cover , it will probably
    shrink too - making it too small ?? 🤔

    Very clever! It's a pity how sew (pun intended) few of your generation know how to sew. I really support bringing good old fashioned sewing classes back into the public schools. That's how we learned, but my mother was a sewer so we learned from her at very young ages. (And she trusted us with her machine!) Keep up the good work.

    The ikea Ektorp couch is ONLY 499.00 its bigger and better than what you bought not to mention the trouble you're going through to make the cover fit lol. Ohwell some people like to do things the hard way.

  • @sardee1315
    @sardee1315 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Half way thru I was wondering if it was really worth it? You basically re-sewed a slipcover that cost $100+ dollars (each).. would it have been easier to buy canvas and make your own? Would it have saved money, if not time? The reason I ask is because I have an old chair that I had a slip cover on that did NOT fit and it's ripping up (because that's what happens when it doesn't fit.) I have to decide if I should buy another ill-fitting slip cover and fit it (like you did above) OR start from scratch and sew it to fit.

    • @TheDIYCottage
      @TheDIYCottage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! 😊 thanks for the question! If I’m being honest, I asked myself the same question while doing this project. But here’s the break-down. When I bought the slipcovers it was $30 for the sofa one and $20 for the loveseat one. (I think they may have raised the price on them now, but I’m not sure). But the reason I went this route, is I couldn’t buy the canvas for that cheap unless I found drop cloths to use. (And I tried that... didn’t like the texture for a couch). I also went this route because the sofa seat and back cushions were already done and they fit great without me doing anything.
      So really it’s up to you what would be best for you in your own interest. If it would be cost saving to tailor one that doesn’t quite fit, then go for it! Or if you think sewing one from scratch would make more sense to you then I say do that! I didn’t do a full on custom one because:.. well that’s just too much work for me, but on a smaller chair, I might have tackled that one. I hope that helps! And I wish you the best of luck on whatever you decide! 😊
