Hey there; I am one of the devs for Codename CURE, and clicked the video solely to comment "Codename CURE is a good example", only to pleasantly find that it's actually *in* the video, so that's awesome haha
Just to address some things that got brought up; the zombies are actually repurposed zombine entities. Their models are based off the citizen animations, but manually re-targeted and re-animated by me. They are way more flexible than CS bots as a result, being able to be spawned independently, with far more advanced locomotion options, being able to jump up and down heights, be affected by scripts, and more. There's some servers that take full advantage of that in order to create custom bosses and zombie types, it's so nuts. It also initially was actually a custom Counter Strike Source mod in the very beginning if I remember right, but then it became a Source Mod afterwards, which was when I got involved. We also made sure it had a huge focus on modding, making custom gamemodes and everything work entirely through hammer entities with no external scripting required in order to make completely custom gamemodes with ease. It's honestly pretty awesome and although a lot of the art assets were gamebanana asset flips (Most of the props were added before I joined the team and I simply repurposed or updated a majority of them), it's honestly a great little game. We made a new game that wasn't actually stinky called Gemini: Binary Conflict and I recommend buying it and checking it out if you have the chance, we're proud of it and it's made 100% from scratch by us, but if I'm honest I kinda want to make a Codename CURE 2 at this point, and make sure that it is really good lol
The Halo maps you see were made by my good friend Kaleidescoop; they're unbelievably talented and I'm so proud of all the work they put into their workshop maps. They make a bunch of crazy maps for Garry's Mod, too, as well as a TF2 one that might become official soon from what I can tell. I love 'em, they're great :)
All-in-all it's always awesome seeing people talk about it; it genuinely isn't the best game in the world but I wasn't even an adult yet when I worked on it and all things considered it did come out great for what it is. It's a bummer you didn't talk about the Survival mode or the custom gamemodes or the PvP mode, but, if I'm honest, they aren't exactly that popular anyway :p

i love l4d i treat it like an arcade game where you just drop in, kill zombies, check the time before work, and just bounce no hard feelings on anyone and you (hopefully) contributed towards the campaign and i love how someone can just drop in as soon as you drop out like a substitute not really disrupting the zombie killing experience.

That's the best part of Left 4 Dead, I think. You can drop in and out seamlessly and there's no problem whatsoever. No waiting to sync between players, no true downside to having or not having coop teammates, no difficulty to catch up if you join the server. Left 4 Dead is the best multiplayer coop game I've ever played.

the crazy thing about back 4 blood is that despite all the marketing implying the creators were the same people that created l4d, but when you really dig in you find that it's basically just a few people who did some work on l4d, not directors, leads, producers, nothing, which isn't to say individual devs aren't important, but they're very much not the Creators- it'd be like a guy who held the boom mic on star wars making a movie and saying FROM THE PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT YOU STAR WAR yknow. deceitful imo

Yea I made that game and im gonna make the next big thing like it” then goes out disappoint everyone and everything.

In fact, L2D is decently well known by L4D players, and it's level design translates quite nicely into L4D. The devs' other game also shows that they are rather talented and know how to make a solid, fun game with interesting concepts and themes, they just need the passion and drive to do so.

The thing about Valve's history is that it shows they're willing to get _extremely experimental_ (turning Team Fortress' sequel into a weird narrative-driven game, trying to make a Portal 2 without portals, making a Half-Life game with randomly-generated environments, etc), but that they also know what experiments end up not working and thus they don't release them.
Valve's proven with both all their Team Fortress and Half-Life 3 experiments (as they described in Half-Life Alyx: The Final Hours) that they'll spend (waste?) a lot of time trying to reinvent the wheel when they probably don't need to, but that they won't release anything until they get it just right. That's why those old Left4dead 3 leaks don't concern me; they're honestly not as weird as trying Portal 2 without portals - those leaks are just stepping stones, and every game has them.
And, to my mind, Alyx proves they still know what they're doing. It's the perfect blend of what makes Half-Life work, along with the technical innovations and the smarts of how to use them to curate an accessible, thought-out game. Give Valve the time they need, and if a Left4dead 3 is truly worthwhile, we will get a good Left4dead 3.

Dota wasn't originally owned by Valve, as it was a mod for World of Warcraft 3, a game made by Blizzard. It was popular around the mid 2000s until some developers of the mod went on to make League of Legends in 2009.
After some legal dispute, Blizzard lost the rights to Dota and the IP was given to Valve, and development would start on Dota 2 which was released in 2013.

Surpass or equal? No. Vermintide is a solid game but it's just a rehash of L4D with a Victorian theme. Each class has a single viable build (all others are unusable trash), and most players would quit it after 100 hrs as there is little replayability. Good attempt, but no. I've read somewhere that Valve's policy on greenlighting new game developments is based on how many of their developers actually want to make it. And because not many of developers believe they can make a good Left 4 Dead 3 or Half-Life 3 or Portal 3, etc., that outdoes the predecessor, there's no development for it.
That's probably why almost all of Valve's games are so beloved; The developers making aren't just there to earn their paycheck, but actually care about the games they're making.

I actually really liked the card system in Back 4 Blood. It was rewarding to replay the same levels with different builds and it felt like completing missions gave a physical form of progression outside of the levels. It was fun to fail at a level and then change my build to incorporate ways of circumventing my previous failure.
The problem with Back 4 Blood was that was just so tame and safe. The characters were boring. Their lines were stale and boring. The special enemies all looked the same and were boring. The gunplay was only slightly above average. The campaign areas were boring. There was only one or two times it strayed from 'walk through hallways and shoot', meanwhile L4D has you always doing some crazy stuff in the last level of each campaign. It was just so... unremarkable.
It made me wish the card system was a mod for Left 4 Dead, so I could be playing that instead. 😹

While the base weapons feel lackluster, he doesn't mention that weapons you pick up can have unique upgrades that change how the weapons work; his criticism seems odd because psychedelic colors and round objects/buildings in the levels clash with the spikey, dark aliens so that they don't melt into the background and create contrast, no mention of the character upgrade system, and no mention that although very, very nascent it's possible to mod the game. If a game review is meant to give a viewer an idea of the gameplay loop and their opinion about it, then he failed at it and just gave his opinion without giving sufficient reason on why.

10:05 thanks for completely ripping apart my discontinued failure of a game.
I'm not overly attached to the game, because we did stop working on it entirely because of the fact that it's a l4d ripoff. But to me it seems your opinion of the game was already determined before you played it, and you really just wanted to dislike game. Saying the zombie spawning system is broken is just flat out wrong. I think you just played Contamination (Which has an entirely scripted sequence for a reason), and then you played the only campaign map once. Never touching survival, which was the main focus of the game while we were working on continuing the campaign. Then comparing it to the likes of Michaels Zombies and RMod is just annoying. I'll say Michael's Zombies is very well put together, but seriously? You think Left 2 Die is worse than the horrible Gmod clones on Roblox? That has to be a gross exaggeration.
The audience problem you bring up is something I am very aware of, and one of the biggest reasons I stopped working on the game. It's all just kids playing a copy of l4d because they don't actually own l4d.

Wow, this video perfectly captures the frustration and longing for a true Left 4 Dead sequel. It's clear that people have a deep love for the franchise, and it's a shame that many of the attempts to replicate its success have fallen short. From Code Name Cure to Back 4 Blood, it's disappointing to see how these games failed to capture the essence and magic of Left 4 Dead.
The analysis of each clone's shortcomings and the comparison to the original game's strengths really hit home. It's interesting to see how different developers approached the concept, but it's clear that creating a worthy successor to Left 4 Dead is an incredibly challenging task.
The mention of Left for Quake as a nostalgic and charming experience, despite its flaws, brought back memories of the PSP days. And the inclusion of Roblox's Left to Die as a popular clone that ultimately disappointed shows the range of attempts to recreate the Left 4 Dead experience.
The discussion on Valve's own struggles with Left 4 Dead 3 sheds light on the difficulties faced even by the original creators. It's a reminder that sometimes it's better to appreciate the unique mechanics and impact of Left 4 Dead in other games, rather than hoping for an actual third installment.
Overall, this video was insightful, entertaining, and a great tribute to the beloved Left 4 Dead franchise. It's clear that the demand for a true successor remains strong, and I can't help but share the sentiment. Here's hoping that one day we'll see a worthy continuation of the Left 4 Dead legacy. But lets be honest, that will probably never happen.

If I had payed full price for this bs I would have been pissed. Then they abandoned the game after a year? They reluctantly released content to fulfill there year agreement. This whole game is a cash grab. They should stop attaching l4d to everything they do cause they haven't made anything good with that kind of quality ever.

    I would have to say:
    * Back 4 Blood isn't that bad. The card system is actually pretty fun... if you got a full deck from the start when playing, the cards were balanced, and you had access to all the cards (ie no grinding). Of course you didn't get a full deck when playing except on some acts (this has been changed), the cards AREN'T balanced, and you have to grind for the cards. The sin of B4B is the specials were NOT fun to fight. They were more annoying than fun/exciting.
    * Anacrusis... has a great visual style, but it played decisively like a game from a small indie studio and was merely so-so.
    * Aliens Fire Team Elite wasn't bad either, but it was just... decent and not that memorable. Also had mouse/keyboard issues (at least with Nvidia cards).
    * WWZ. Was actually pretty fun and worth playing, but again nothing that memorable.
    * Deep Rock Galactic - I know people LOVE this, but I never really got into it. I know the devs are super good to the community though.
    * DarkTide - Honestly... I LOVE DT. I think the PvE core gameplay on DT beats the pants of all of these games, INCLUDING L4D2. Pacing is great, specials/elites are fun, weapon choices are fun, graphics, sound/music, atmosphere is great, and it's a very skill based game (with dodging, blocking, pushing being crucial). Feedback is great. But I focused on "core gameplay" because there's a lot wrong with DarkTide (namely laughable story, putting RNG into everything including what maps you can play, not enough maps, TONS of crashes early on, early on the achievements they had were absolutely horrible too).

Man I'm down with L4D2 with Source 2 treatments, with more zombies killing toys. That's just the beauty of L4D, a simple zombie shooting sandbox.
They don't need to fix the formula. But I think if they can extend the formula, we will dig that down deep.

    • @AbuHajarAlBugatti
      @AbuHajarAlBugatti ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really.
Baxk then left 4 dead was totally new and unique and brought us immersion into such a situation like no other game aside Land of the dead and it brought us the exact feeling of all the zombie movies that flooded us in the 90s and 2000s in the form of a videogame.
As said only land of the dead and Dead Rising 1 came to that table.
No matter how generic the shooting mechanics were, everything else was just unique so the game blew up instantly
You obviously dont even notice all the theme-, sound, atmospheric cues in all the games referencing older zombie movies.
I dont blame you but you missed out. And how much Desd Rising and Left 4 dead were and land of the dead were the peak of over a decade of constant zombie media

I feel like not including World War Z was a weird decision, given the fact that back 4 blood is included. Even though world War Z is heavily inspired by the books and movie with the same name, the gameplay is basically the same as left 4 dead. Get from A to B, find X to progress, chew trough hordes of zombies, horde stand-offs, etc. It's heavily criticized by many people, but given the fact that you touched so much on characters and their personalities, I feel like the abundance of characters in world War Z, with their different stories, backed up by short animations, would have been a big plus regarding your opinion on the game

    • @KincaidCalder-vn6bo

I think it had just enough new mechanics to warrant it not being a rip off: third person, melee as a default instead of a secondary weapon, turrets and wire that can be placed, skill trees and classes, and a much larger scale.

    • @xineki6390
      @xineki6390 ปีที่แล้ว

@KincaidCalder-vn6bo totally agree, I did not include those things due to left 4 dead 2 having alternatives to those. Melee weapons do take up one slot, but they are stronger. Third person mods probably exist. And turrets and wires u can plays are similar to gas cans and similar one time use, area denial tools (more with workshop items). I felt like the character diversity was a way bigger plus for the game compared to these. Sorry for nit-picking, don't wanna argue, just stated my opinion

B4B would have become a much better game and gotten 2x the player count had it just simple gotten a mod/steam workshop support.
But it fallen hard not because the game itself is bad or anything,it's because of the Team's incompetence and them coming off as complete douchbags, talked down on anyone who asked for mod support instead of endorsing it and now they left it on life support confirming the game will no longer gets future updates and support just because the game didn't do well.
and that really sucks because i personally think it's a pretty much fun albeit a flawed shooter and i did had a fun time with my friends and i didn't minded the whole gimmicky card system, thought it's kinda fresh for a L4D kinda game.I just it gotten the mod support because even if the team stops caring,at least the mod community would keep the game alive, preserved and re playable.

The two things that bring me back to Left 4 Dead:
    1. Actual well written and enjoyable characters, despite the lack of any real deep plot. Most clones I've played don't focus on this, the characters never land or are designed in a "trendy" tacticool way, onstead of being normal people with very distinct silhouettes
    2. Mods. They never seem to understand mods will make the game infinitely replayable and enjoyable for tons of people. Could you imagine a co-op shooter that hosts mapping contests then rotates those winning levels into the game itself? That would be crazy, Killing Floor 2 did something like that and it was a welcome feature in the game.

B4B had a lot of players because of the XBox Gamepass. It was promising too, however Turtle Rock in classic Turtle Rock passion, made it so the ending is always a sequel bait where they'll then follow it up with a paid DLC that is not included in the Xbox gamepass. Another factor is the fact that they outright killed the community by denying them any moddability of the game because they wanted to earn a few more dollars from weapon skins that are quite mediocre at best.
