I'm surprised that there doesn't seem to be any mention of gm_ghosthunt or its two sequels, which were all made by Breadman(the guy behind Entropy Zero). These maps were played by some pretty big names around 2012-2013, like Pewdiepie and the Yogscast to name a few. They were and still are some of the best Gmod horror maps imo; really good scripting, a very open-ended level design that allows you to explore at your own pace, and randomized events that made for great replayability. It was neat to see how the experience differed between playthroughs. I'd also like to give a shoutout to gm_paranormal by Steinman and gm_catacombs by Citizen_001. These two maps do a great job of capturing the spirit of the Ghost Hunt maps, with the former being a more linear experience with a specific objective and the latter being slightly less focused on horror with a greater emphasis on traps and puzzles.

Dear Ratlobber, I hope this letter finds you well. It has been quite some time since we've last spoken, but I felt compelled to write to you about a matter that has been weighing heavily on my mind. Recently, I was approached by a group of Dacoobers who sent me on a mission to deliver a message to someone named Richter. The message was simple, yet urgent: they wanted him to make a sequel to the motion picture, "Monkeying Around In Half Life 2." As you may recall, this was a fantastic film that starred the beloved Boss Monkey and Clarence, two characters that we all grew to love. However, despite my best efforts, Richter has not responded to any of my messages. I fear that he may have moved on from the project and has no intention of revisiting it. This is a great shame, as I believe that there is still so much potential in the story of Boss Monkey and Clarence. That is why I am reaching out to you, Ratlobber. I know that you were a big fan of the first film, and I believe that you have the power to convince Richter to reconsider his position. We need to bring back Boss Monkey and Clarence and take them back to Denny's, where they belong. We cannot let this story go unfinished. So please, Ratlobber, use your influence and reach out to Richter on our behalf. Let him know how much this film means to us and to the world. With your help, I am confident that we can convince him to make the sequel that we all deserve. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and I look forward to hearing from you soon. This video reminded me of an atmospheric horror map I can't remember the name of. I installed it around the debut of Gmod 11 and it was really fun to play because it had some trippy platform sections. Thanks for that.
@MilkManDave17 we don't actually know though, I guess it's the most likely option I guess. I guess I didn't wanna think about it too hard. Those teeth looked too real as a kid. It always scared me seeing that corpse in the sewers or wherever you first see it. Same with ravenholm 😂😂
I just wanna say your intros are half the reason I subbed to you, and it just makes me wanna make cool shit (and your videos actually being amazing is the cherry on top)
A lot of old GMod horror maps were pretty lousy as they were very reliant on cheap, loud jumpscares. I do like the latest maps, though, that actually go for a horror vibe and rely on atmosphere and subtly messing with the player (sound of footsteps on an empty server, doors closing by themselves, etc.). The Librarian TH-cam channel has some good videos showcasing some of these maps, and he mostly does it in VR.
I used to play a lot of workshop horror maps in middle school around 2011-2013ish and I have vivid memories of multiple maps using photos of real burn victims as jumpscares by teleporting the player to a room with the image textured on a wall then teleporting them back all while playing some ridiculous bass boated scream
My favorites are "ambient horror" where there is little to no combat, & most of the jumpscares are unintentional because you're creeped out. Maybe you'lk find a weapon & be constantly on-guard expecting to use it, but the time never comes. The dread of "if" & "when" something will happen in the silence feels less cheap than a noisy haunted house shooter full of jumpscares you know are coming every 2 minutes.
I happen to be a man who thoroughly enjoys horror Gmod maps. Played probably near 50 at this point. They aren’t very high quality, I just love the vibe they have. No other game has the same vibe. Gmod is built different.

popular garrys mod horror is either living ragdolls, "ahhhhhhh im alone in a map that im used to playing with other peolple something something liminal space" or SCARY BLACK PEOPLE
I love The Hidden: Source & I really loved Slashers, that kind of DBD remake in GMod. Both are kind of dead today, but still probably playable in GMod. Those are the top multiplayer horror games on Source for sure.
GMOD ARGs are not ARGs, they're webseries, if an ARG is not interactive, it is not an ARG, it may be Alternate Reality but its not an Alternate Reality Game because you can't play it. Good examples of ARGs are webseries that have canon elements outside of their main realm of showcasing content, like TH-cam. Events like Raiding Fan Discord Servers with canon content or setting up fake websites that have you solve puzzles to get more content are good examples of elements in real ARGs. Some ARGs even have you go to real world locations to find things that people have hidden.
Hey ratlobber you should try the map “the accident” it’s one of the better scary adventure maps. Also found your channel through your video about the glue virus. Love the content 👍
I was one of those kids lucky enough to be playing gmod before FNAF. I distinctly remember getting into it because of VenturianTale and those various horror maps + murder. I still occasionally play gmod for murder and prop hunt. Awesome game, made a ton of memories during my childhood. And it feels weird that I’m now gonna be 20 next week, as I recall it like it was yesterday. Good times, good times.
I feel like the Librarian is keeping a foot in the door in prevents this games horror from completely disappearing from the main audience of gmod (he does spooooky exploration videos in vr and such)
Horror and gmod went together so well, and it was all because of half life 2, the game has such a lonely atmosphere about it, and maps in source games all have this lonely feeling, even tf2, a cartoony game. It's all the source engine really.
I don’t think of nextbots as “scary”, per se, they’re just funny little things that can keep you on your toes when escaping from them, and i think that’s pretty fun.

I've been thirsting for some more spookyness and I'm glad you made this
idk why but there something about gmod that makes me think its the best game out there and idk why
It's all the source engine really.
those mini intros are so damn good
I think an honorable mention is Jazztronauts's New Game Plus mode, which has horror shit creep in in a really fun way.
Dude what is the Jam at 8:20?
7:38 Can someone tell me where I can find this flashlight mod? I really want it.
I’m pretty sure corpse01’s texture was taken from an actual burnt corpse
it was
babe wake up new ratlobber video
I don’t think of nextbots as “scary”, per se, they’re just funny little things that can keep you on your toes when escaping from them, and i think that’s pretty fun.
Love the video, but what’s the version of virtual insanity you’re using at the end?
another ratlobber classic
3:20 because that is a real life corpse
10:58) What ARG are these clips from?
I recognize the first two clips from Classic GM Videos, but idk the others
Yo Mama's house
Damn I just uploaded a video of me and my friends playing a Gmod horror map today.
