    For the controls of the Dreamcast port, Gearbox always touted during previews the dedicated DC keyboard and mouse peripherals, the latter of which only released to the public partway through the port's ill-fated development. Same goes for the PS2 port and its support for any standard USB keyboard and mouse.

    There was also a cancelled Mac port of Half-Life 1. Apparently, the Mac version was nearly finished, but was shelved due to multiplayer issues.
    Valve released Mac ports of Half-Life 1 and 2 in 2013, but these ports are 32-bit and so cannot run on modern macOS (10.15 Catalina and up). I really hope Valve updates these ports to 64-bit soon (but Catalina came out in 2019, so Valve has had three years to update their games to 64-bit).

    Xash on the Switch is awesome as well, it has the only true port of Opposing Force that I've come across.

    I find it so weird that the dreamcast of all consoles got HD models when it clearly couldn't handle it.
    The houndeyes and vortigaunts look like they're from alpha, the zombie looks like the deathmatch zombie model, the headcrab's claw textures look messed up, the barnacle it's teeth and tongue are all orange, and the bullsquids have orange eyes and blue spots. Not to mention the textures that are a lower resolution than even the LD models.
    Gina also looks like a mutated baby. Also gina's suit looks like it has space to accommodate breasts.
    Also for some reason the beret marine in the ps2 version was replaced by a green helmet soldier making combat encounters harder to read as they look more similar to regular marines.
    If you don't know what I mean by "harder to read" here's a chart from the combine overwiki.

      As others have said, the dreamcast was more powerful than the PS2. It also had a VGA port, meaning even today it's pretty easy to get it hooked up to a modern monitor or TV. The system was intended to be "future proof" in some ways, and anticipated better screens, requiring better HD models. The VGA, built in online functionality, and serial port(lol) were all added with the intention of giving it a lifespan that would last well into the 2000s.

    You actually missed one cancelled valve sanctioned Half-Life port. There was going to be a port of Half-Life to contemporary Macs of the time which had a completely different OS and architecture compared to the Mac OS X intel x86 port of the steam version that came out around 2010. It was poised for Mac OS 9 (version 10.0 and newer run a completely different OS that’s derived from a OS called NeXTSTEP/OPENSTEP) and would run on the PowerPC ISA instead of Intel. It was being made by Rebecca Heinemann (the same person who famously ported Doom 1 to the 3DO in 6 weeks) Valve wanted it cancelled after it was done for whatever reason. Which is a shame because it would have been one of the earliest cross play games to ever release as it would have worked just the same as the PC original.

    I really liked playing Half-Life on ps2. I picked it up this year, actually. And while it certainly has its compromises from the original, being able to kick back and play Half-Life with a controller is far more comfortable to me. It was worth the difficulty spike. I honestly wish there was a mod that added that "aim assist" from the ps2 version into PC Half-Life. It was a great casual playthrough.

      I have faith in Valve for good gyro implementation, since a majority of console versions have really raw gyro.
      I really can't stand most switch games gyro since it has a lot of drift due to the game software, deadzones, low sensitivity only, smoothing, delay and so on. Valve really nailed their support for it on PC and I see them doing great for console gaming. Steam Deck is introducing people to the gyro gang and it makes me happy to see people learn about it.

    • @IcyXzavien
      @IcyXzavien ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe Valve can do it, it’s more or less if the Nvidia’s porting team can. They did a fine job with gyro in the portal games, but the biggest problems is its auto-recalibration (of which I think it’s more aggressive than the switch’s built in one) and a deadzone that honestly doesn’t get a chance to be annoying because the screen drifts back due to the recalibration. Like I think it’s one of the most responsive gyro implementations on switch it just needs a couple of fixes (and like doubled the max sensitivity & a gyro pause button)
