A 3050 is still a MASSIVE upgrade from a 970. If I can get one of these badboys at msrp, I'm golden, because I can nearly triple my grahical output for cheap, then pick up a 4000 later this year at msrp on a waiting list if EVGA lets us sign up for 4000 ques.

This is just sad. My 1050ti that i already bought used 3 years ago now costs more than even it's price at launch... The 3050’s are still gonna get snatched up by miners, because it has enough VRAM to work with the DAG file size for another couple of years. The 6500 XT is purely for gaming, because it can’t even handle the current size of the DAG files, and 6GB cards are going to stop working pretty soon. In theory, the 4GB cards running FSR can squeeze slightly better looking graphics out of lower resolution textures-so it might not last you another 3-5 years, but it might get you by for another 1-3 years, if you need to ride out the shortages and stockpile a little more money to buy whatever is available at that time.
I just finished my PC ugrade. I went with the AMD 5900x, 32GB RAM 3600MHz and NVME ssd from Samsung. Now what I'm about to tell you might seem crazy: I bought a €150 case with good airflow, a lot of room for components and mounting a lot of FANS. So I went with the PC-O11 Dynamic from Lian-Li. 50% of the reason for buying this case was... my 1060. I want it to keep it as cool as possible so it won't die on me for the next 2-3 years.
It’s true only if we assume that miners need less gpu power than gamers. The power of the individual gpu doesn’t matter, what matters is the efficiency. If for the cost and power consumption it has great performance, even if only a minuscule amount to high end cards, they’ll still be bought up by miners too. People who are still mining today aren’t broke students who game with their one pc at day and mine at night, they have gigantic farms of rigs upon rigs of systems. If the card is efficient for its fixed and running costs (initial price and power consumption) in relation to its performance, then miners will buy it too.
The thing I hate the most of about the gpu situation is that my gpu is turning 5 years old at this point and I'm worried about what I will do if it breaks before this scalping madness is over
Note that the lack of hardware encoders on the 6500 does not mean it can't screen capture, it just means that the encoding will have to be done on the CPU. Most modern CPUs should have no trouble encoding 1080p 60fps video.
Hopefully these will actually be available. Even though they are weaker than I would like, I am honestly tired of seeing 1050ti cards at every retail store for over $200.
I think you make a good point. Yeah, the Radeon does sound pretty pathetic compared to the likes of an RTX3080, but then again my previous card was a GTX 1070 which could reliably run every new game on medium settings and was more than capable to run VR titles. If you only want to play games and don’t care about 4K 120FPS then honestly why choose anything more expensive? It does its job and it does it fine. Nothing less, nothing more.
This is a sad time for gamers. I am still rocking a RX570. And even though I can still play the games I like to play, it is showing its age. Really hoping for Intel to make something half decent for a decent price. My hopes are high because they have their own fabs whereas AMD has to share production capacity with Apple and other companies ordering from TSMC

3:54 while I'm also not an expert on video codecs and encoding, I do think you will still have the ability to screen capture stuff because software solutions exist, and the page doesn't mention it can't do H264 encoding under 4K. But this will mean there'll be problems if a screen recording software requires H265 and hardware encoding, though this is more to the fault of the screen recorder than the card. I myself haven't had luck with hardware encoding or H265 my self, as either Vegas Pro can't open them, or playback corrupts it's self, so it's not really a concern to me if I were to get the card.
Not sure, but assuming that the video encoding is just dedicated hardware on the card/chip for completing those algorithms, I feel this could be an issue for VR where the video is encoded but I don't know.
I suspect both cards will be "priced" north of $500. It doesn't matter if miners will want it or not, scalpers will buy up every card they can and resell them at the highest price people will buy them at. I honestly think at this point prices will never fall, because this cycle will just continue until the industry collapses.

and almost any game will benefit from higher vram and texture quality is one of the most important setting on a game and has zero performance impact as long as you have free vram. And I'm getting my 2060 6GB VRAM filled with a lot of games anyway. Also, more than mining, scalpers is a bigger problem than mining right now.
My gtx 970 i got 7 years ago is now worth more than it was at retail!!! It's tragic that I upgraded my whole system except the psu and gpu to modern standards just before the 3000 series announcements and now I cant see myself getting a reasonable upgrade for less than £350!!!

The reason why they cut video encoding on 6500XTs and by extension all Navi 24 die is because of die size concern. AMD wants Navi 24 die to rule the low end before ARC release, by cutting out encoding it saves around 15mm2 of die space and they can produce more.
The 6500 XT sounds great, but no encoding kills it for me, I often record quick clips from games when I do something insane for example score an insane goal in FIFA or find a glitch in Cyberpunk..
I was hoping to upgrade from my RX 480 red devil but at this point all I've got is disappointment not only due to the shortages but also due to the GPU's and the lack of value they offer even at MSRP. I paid 100£ for my GPU right before the 30 series launched and I was hoping to get at least rtx 2060 levels of performance if I ended up paying twice as much if not more for a new GPU that should technically be 2 generations newer. At this rate I'll probably just end up buying a used 3060 when the whole shortage blows over.
I get why they chose 4GB for the 6500 xt, because it limits the amount of algorithms to mine crypto on, but it also cripples gaming performance as well. Hoping it works out, because I know a lot of people are hungry for GPUs for gaming, but can’t afford these current outrageous prices.

I still have a ton of unplayed old AAA games on my steam library because my current gaming setup doesn't have the juice it needed. My happiness doesn't have to be powerful, it just need to be wise.

i think what companies should do is make cards specifically designed for mining over all else even sacrificing gaming for mining, basically as miner containment, that way miners will just buy those and leave all the gaming gpus alone

I'm calling It the 6500xt will be the new Gt 1030 when you get to games 2 3 4 years from now where games that long down the road and they can barely play at 720p 30fps and With the no Video encoding support within the formats selected that could also be a limit in it's lifespan.

Etherium requires around 6gb of vram and most others require minimum 4. So 3gb seems to combat mining in general.
