6500XT Tested on slower PC in older games

  • The Radeon 6500 XT, paired with a Ryzen 1500X and limited to PCI-E 3 bandwidth, is a worst-case scenario. Especially with THAT cable management. That must be lopping like, 50% off the benchmarks by itself! So how will it fare on older titles?

    I'm still convinced that "cable management" is an euphemism for "shove the cables behind the baseplate where people can't see them".

    • @DMSBrian24
      @DMSBrian24 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      there's 3 points of cable management - better airflow, easier access (switching components, removing drives etc.) and obviously the aesthetics, for the 1st and 3rd all you need is stuff the cables behind the backplate but it still counts xd

    Honestly, I know this is meant to be a positive take on the card, but it actually made me dread it even more. I stopped gaming for years at one point because my computer's performance in different games was so unpredictable and rarely pleasant that playing new games was more stressful than fun due to worrying about the result of the performance coinflip.
    I'd feel better buying a weaker card instead of the 6500 XT if it had more predictable performance and a somewhat lower price. This one would sap the fun out of gaming for me I reckon.

What you say used to be true, but now AMD cards are generally faster, except for the abomination on the video of course...

    While running in PCIE3 is for sure bottlenecking - The bus is only 64 bits. If you don't minimize textures, it'll eventually be like shoving strawberries through a funnel. Even with older titles, the scaling just won't be there.

    Dear Philip,
    This comment isn't about the content of this video but something I've found concerning. Your videos are not appearing in my subscription feed anymore. It's stranger than that though, videos that didn't come up in my subscriptions, eventually appear after about 10 days. This has been happening for a long time and I can't quite find where it started (as once I see one of this channel's videos in my recommended, I will go and watch it, so I can't use my video history to investigate that). From my perspective, each time you upload can be described as follows:
    - You upload video
    - I open TH-cam, at some point being recommended your recent upload on the home page, not in my subscriptions.
    - I check my subscriptions video isn't there.
    - You upload again, same thing occurs.
    - If 10 days have passed the video before last has appeared in my subscriptions.
    I have unsubscribed and resubscribed, liked and unliked videos to see if the holy algorithm is having a moment and needs to verify I'm subscribed. Nothing has worked, you said the views on this channel are slowly reducing. I thought for a moment that it is because you upload shorts. Shorts do not get shown in subscription feeds like normal videos do, so I felt this could be the case, but you also upload shorts on 3kliksphilip and I do not have the same issue with that channel. Plus, the shorts on this channel have become quite popular.
    I reviewed your 2021 analysis video where you said 2kliksphilip just isn't being recommended to people, and your current subscribers eventually lose interest (12:50 in that video). However I thought of something slightly more sinister in a way. Is this some kind of algorithm testing/trial and error to improve it's efficiency.
    Are your current subscribers not being shown your uploads immediately, therefore they are not gaining those initial views within the first day or so, so with a smaller sample size, your watchtime could be drastically affected by what is normally a smaller subsection that don't watch all the way through, is actually a massive size of the viewerbase. This is then not pushing your videos into recommended as it's not gaining the watchtime required.
    You got -1 subscriber on your Odgrub 4 video. Saying "I'd have been better off not releasing it" made the connection in my mind that, did your video actually *get* released? As in, was the video not appearing in so many of your subscribers feed's that it statistically seemed as though you didn't release it at all.
    If someone misses a video from one of their many subscriptions, they aren't going to know to comment underneath your next one that they missed the other one, or even watch it, or even think you've stopped uploading completely and unsubscribe. Likewise, if people are only seeing this in recommended, then maybe the amount of unsubscribers are balancing with the amount of viewers being suggested the video and subscribing.
    Sorry if this comment was a bit all over the place, I was conflicted about emailing you this or just commenting, but you must be aware of this issue as I've commented about this before, and seen other people comment with the same problem (even within this very video). Maybe I decided to comment as weird stray hope that this comment could turn the tide against the algorithim and all of a sudden 2kliksphilip rises in popularity. Regardless, I thought you might want to see a detailed perspective from a subscriber.
    Best wishes, Alex

      @2kliksphilip The only reason I can think such nonsense works with the algorithm is to maximize views from big channels to gain more suscribers than they already have...or they just want more data to see what's popular. I guess they are trying to spread the users with as much content as they can from as many creator as they can until something stick with them but that will always sound horrible to me.
      Can't wait till a better platform is created in the future.

      @@tomstonemale 100% this, I'm the kinda of TH-cam user that has fewer subscriptions than most. I've have around 20 that I watch on a regular basis and even then I sometimes skip watching it if it doesn't interest me. I have a feeling that the audience they are trying to reach are those with 50+ subscriptions that watch anything they get suggested.

    The drop in performances for the 6500XT is probably due to filling up the memory. That card only has 4GB of memory. The driver will most likely try to swap to RAM at that point and it will bottleneck hard on the GPU. I worked into optimizing some high profile PC game and it's something we had an issue with at one point.
    You can monitor it by going into task manager > performances > graphic processor. Once you fill up the dedicated memory and start seeing the shared memory go up is when you'll most likely see a performance drop.

    • @AGuy-vq9qp
      @AGuy-vq9qp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Vram is not going to be a problem with older games, and even then should be fixable with a lower resolution. Task manager is a bad diagnostic tool because vram is one of those things that is wasted if it's not used, so any program will eat as much vram as it can and only limit itself once it nears the max capacity.

    • @part_time_commie
      @part_time_commie 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AGuy-vq9qp of course it wouldn't be a problem in older games, this comment was, I think, made in relation to him mentionning stuttering in shadow of mordor.
      As for VRAM being wasted when not used, I have no idea where you got that. I am a software engineer one some AAA title and a big part of my work was balancing VRAM usage.
      I remember once where I had an issue with stuttering happening only on AMD cards. I noticed we were eating way too much memory due to some bug and I used task manager a lot to figure out when the issue happened. The stuttering would happen pretty much exactly as we started filling the shared memory when the dedicated memory was full.
      This is not a diss on AMD cards either, it just happens to stutter because we were doing something wrong, NV just always does shit in your back ... so it looks like you are doing the right thing.
      Anyways, I hope this helps you!

    It's called Quake Champions. Also it is the only game I play. What you should've done for testing on a 1080p monitor is setting everything to low and resolution scale to 75%. I know it sounds off putting but it actually helps even with more powerful cards such as my 1660 ti for example. Pros use like the RTX 3070, all low settings at 1080 except lighting that you have to bump up to high to see shadows of enemies that can reveal their location.
    I can recommend you try to get good at quake. Once you're half decent you're not going to want to play anything else though.
    Even as an average player in this game you need +250 fps to be able to stay consistent. The pros have gone up to 360Hz displays and in this title it makes a difference over 240Hz even. I'm stuck at 240Hz and that will have to do for now.

I have a friend who I built that PC for who plays exclusively CS. He was coming from a super old Mac and usually runs at lower settings and wants 300fps+, so I got the fastest CPU I could for him and a cheaper GPU, but even at higher settings I always thought it was CPU limited mostly.
