  • 6 months on from my first marathon at Manchester, I head to Brighton to put myself through 26.2 miles of pavement pounding, this time beside the sea. In this video, I recap on the race, share with you my mile by mile split times, the nutrition that I took on the course and well as the lessons I learned from my first marathon and all of the gear that I decided to use on race day.

    Really good to see your breakdown of the race. This kind of pace for a marathon is mind blowing for me. I once went all out and did a half in 1.29 to the point of almost passing out and throwing up so can't get my head around doing that twice 😂 Great stuff 👍

      To be fair, I thought the same when I first went sub-90 for the half. Couldn’t imagine doing it all again! Then I went 1:26, then 1:18 and suddenly 1:30 didn’t seem so tough and I began to dream 😅 I think if you can have a consistent 12 months or so of training, it’s very doable.

    Hi Lee, thanks for a great video - my eyes were watering listening to your safety pin episode! I use a Flipbelt for gels etc on long runs and races - works well, just need to make sure you go a size or two down for a good tight fit.

      Hi Jack, thanks for commenting - I've heard of Flipbelt, I will check them out thank you! And as for the safety pin.... the less said the better 😂

    My personal preference with watches - don’t touch them during the run at all, no pace advisers and no distractions from them. Nothing more frustrating than mess something up during the run, like clicking lap button accidentally twice or constantly get beeped by watch just because they fail to get gps signal and can’t get your speed right.

      I hear you. How do you keep track of your pacing during a race?

    • @kmdsummon

      @@TheVeganRunner Pace is displayed, I look at it, but I don’t set up pace limits and/or any notifications on the watch if pace is wrong.

      @@kmdsummon I see - I don’t have those alerts either, I tried them once on a run but it wasn’t helpful. Pace can be inaccurate due to gps error, so hitting the lap button at the mile marker seems like a good idea to me. Some people print out wrist bands with their target times for every mile, I might look into that as well.

    Turning off the auto lap tip, never thought of doing this, but makes complete sense. This is going to really help in future as long as I remember to hit the manual laps at the markers 😂. Another great vid 👍. Glad your safety pin stayed safe! 😁

      I know! Why hasn't any of this occurred to me over the past 5 years of running! Glad it's not just me though 😂 I have presented myself with a bit of a challenge too - film the mile marker whilst also remembering to hit the lap button....
      Thanks for watching! 😁

    Great analysis, thank-you. Regarding the cup thing, I suggest you practise using them at race pace because you'll soon come across them again. Outside the UK bottles are rarely offered, cups are the norm in most countries. I often start races HM+ with a bottle in my hand. If it's a marathon I'll leave another with a supporter in the crowd to pick up later. Less mucking about with cups and you can keep clear of the chaos at water stations. Good luck for RTTS.

      @TheVeganRunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are really good ideas Gary - thank you. Filming makes carrying a bottle problematic but I’m sure I could figure something out. Staying out of the carnage of the water stations would be a big plus!

    Great recap Lee! I was shocked when I saw this because some who I have missed the race video! I will have to scroll back and check it! Great tip about the watch settings. Sounds like you got lucky with that safety pin! 😂 Keep up the great work mate! Looking forward to seeing what's next for you! 😎🤘🏻

      Thanks Ben! I might be a little biased, but I think it's the better of the two marathon race vids I've made. The less said about that safety pin, the better! 😂 Can't wait for RTTS - you can't be far away from the OMEN now?

      There isn't enough time in the day Ben! I'm also behind! Wow - just a month out then, hopefully, the bulk of the hard work is in the bag! Just a case of running a few miles now ;)

    Great video, thank you. I’ve got MK Marathon on Monday. Goal is sub 4 but not really feeling it, so we will see what happens. I will hang onto to the 4hr pacer and see what happens. Carrying gels is also something I’m looking into. I use a bum bag (fanny pack) which is not ideal. I wear Ron Hill shorts which does have pockets but not enough. I will be carrying 7 or 8 gels!

    • @TheVeganRunner
      @TheVeganRunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hopefully, another week of tapering will re-energise you - training beats you up and I don't start to feel ready until a few days out. This is the thing, ideally, you should be carrying 7 to 8 gels... but where the heck do you put them all! We need to bump up to elite status and get our own special tables 😎 I saw something by Salomon that I almost bought; I guess it's the sports version of a bum-bag - the pulse I think it was called.
