    39 YEARS OLD.....the greatest marathon runner of all times....never done a DNF before......We are all human and we age...The mind is willing but the body is not at some time in one's life. What happened to Eliud happens to ALL OF US EVENTUALLY. I love the answer he gave when asked what happened. He is still the GOAT.

      I think he left the race because he was so behind and couldn't catch up even the number 10 runner. He came to win a medal or atleast best of 5. So it does make sense if he ended his race.

      Why is he the GOAT? Based on what? Haile Gebrselassie would most probably beat him in today's super shoes and is arguably the GOAT imo.

      @@yianpap6093 Setting two marathon world records helps his case but it's not just about time. Kipchoge is a five time World Marathon Major series champion and has won 15 out of 18 major marathons that he's competed in. He's one of three runners to win multiple Olympic gold medals in the marathon and holds the record for wins in the London and Berlin marathons. Obviously it is ultimately subjective and you cannot conclusively "prove" who is the best, but the reason people call Kipchoge the GOAT is because he just wins and wins.

      @@yianpap6093 Kipchoge is the 2016 and 2020 Olympic marathon champion, and was the world record holder in the marathon from 2018 to 2023, until that record was broken by the late Kelvin Kiptum (killed in a car accident earlier this year) at the 2023 Chicago Marathon. Kipchoge has run four of the 10 fastest marathons in history and is widely regarded as the greatest runner in the distance.....And you ask, based on what? There you go!

      If this was the only time something like this happened sure. He hasn't had a good race in a couple of years by his standards: Boston 2023 disaster, he won Berlin in 2023 but the time was below what everyone expected and he was uncharacteristically struggling in second half, Tokyo 2024 also disaster and now the Olympics. He's obviously the GOAT and can probably still run like a 2:03. But perhaps we should accept that he is no longer on the same level he once was and that there are others faster than him currently. And that is totally fine.

    Current world record for the 50k is 2:38:43 (5:07mile/3:10km pace) and only 5 miles/8km more than the marathon. I feel like this is something that could be broken relatively easily by most of these guys, but I doubt there's enough money/publicity in ultras compared to marathon for it to be worth it. Regardless, I would really like to see how athletes at this level would perform in longer (50k, 50m, 100k etc.) distances.

      @koopaporodies4498 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      During an interview a few years ago the reporter asked Kipchoge if he’d consider doing an ultra or a trail race and I believe he said “Yes, of course, I’d consider it.” Or it was something around the lines of that. I personally think if Kipchoge just put in a few more miles with a little less intense speedwork based on speed and more speedwork based on distance than he’d be great. You’ll have to fact check me on the quote.

    • @dylancotton1385
      @dylancotton1385 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes most ultras and trail races in general have more elevation than your standard marathon, but the courses where these fast ultras are held are generally just as flat. Oftentimes they are on looped courses though (but after INEOS1:59, we can see that looped courses might not be the worst for Kipchoge). Hoka’s Project X (though an unofficial event) had less than 500ft of elevation in 100km (according to Jim Walmsley’s strava). Nike would have to really make it worth it for someone like Kipchoge to transition to these distances I feel.

    The wear and tear of a decades long professional athletic career sure do knock on his door, but he still has many years of running ahead of him. On whatever level or on whatever distance, does it really matter?
    What impressed me the most about Eliud Kipchoge is his demeanor, mindset, and working spirit. It’s his performances as well, sure, but once you start paying attention to what he is saying and how he’s conducting himself, you can’t help but like the guy and be inspired. He’s here to stay but people are superficial morons, as seen with the 180 many did with the emergence of Kelvin Kiptum: win races and break records, and you’ll be celebrated, worshipped and loved, they’ll adore you as if they know you personally.
    People bowed to Kipchoge as long as he was winning, and all of a sudden, with Kiptum taking over, they found their new hero in Kiptum and left Kipchoge in the dust like a disposable object. Suddenly, all you hear is criticism, mockery, calls for retirement and other disrespectful behavior. We should stop seeing runners as only valuable as long as they break records and win races. To reduce a person to nothing but their performance results is twisted and disrespectful.

Sad to see indeed, But I can't help but wonder whether his plated shoes shoes were a factor in coping with the hills. We run hills on our forefoot to drive off more so than on the flat. Perhaps his back pain was caused by excessive effort in pivoting over the stiff rocker plated shoes? Perhaps the plated shoes built to aid propulsion and enhance speed on flat surfaces actually added as a barrier to progress on inclines for his style? Of course , on the other hand, many wore lated shoes and coped pretty well! Whatever, no doubt we will see Kipchoge toeing the line in an autumn marathon and returning to a successful outcome.

    Obviously the age make a role in Kipchogue’s last benchmarks, not only in Paris.
    Historically 39 years old is higher than average peak performance by age, Kipchogue is out of the norm so statistics can fail to predict but soon or late he should get longer times in marathon or any other race

    What happened?
    My opinion is the following (although I may be wrong):
    Age +
    probably (as per my perception & understanding)
    innappropriate strategy and dedication during the preparation phase.
    In those occassions he seemed to appear (more times han usual) in promotional activities while he was supposed to be already preparing for the next marathon
    he definitely performed below expectations.
    Besides, I tend to think that if you are going to run a very hilly marathon (Boston, Olympic Paris) in order to perform at “podium level” (1st,2nd,3rd),
    your preparation cannot be the same as preparing for Berlín/London. But the news out there seemed to reveal he was not including and substantial specific adaptations to his training plan.

    It happens in events in general where elites know theyre not gonna hit a desried time or position that they desire and although they could finish and still run far faster than the average person theyd much rather just call it a day because you need to remember theyre not running to tick off a bucket list of completing a marathon like other people are and the conditions are just draining them of their water faster than usual. Also it happens more so at Olympics because the olympics marathon will be held during the olympics and thats that and it will most likely be held within the hosting city, unlike yearly marathons around the world that try to run at the best time of the year with as little hills as possible in that area. Now of course age is a big factor here but all im trying to say is its far from an anomaly what happened.
