    BRIGHTON MARATHON 2023 RACE RECAP - DNF! - EDDBUD - RUNNING SHOE SELECTION and PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS
    I was in east sussex for the BRIGHTON MARATHON 2023.
    Find out how i got on, the shoes i wore and my thoughts on the race route.
    I analyse my performance and give you some race footage to set the scene. How did the ADIDAS ADIOS PRO 2 get on navigating me across the scenic but windy route?
    Cold conditions though a tough build up to the race for me, one day i will have the perfect preparation for a race, i was frozen before the start.
    Sadly a DNF, i got injured around 17/18 miles and couldn't carry on running, a real shame! But i would rather be on the safe side than carry on and make the situation worse.
    Hold tight people, stay strong and we WILL make it through.
    Keep it nice in the comments please, i do not do unpleasant, its just ..... unpleasant. See you in the digital ones and zeros......

    Appreciate the marathon recap, Edd. It’s got to be hard to recap a disappointing race. But lots to be learned from a partial marathon (especially one in which you escape injury by letting it go)! All this will likely make the next one all the sweeter. Every marathon I’ve run has been a hungry beast of a different color. 🐈🐈‍⬛Your next one will be very different-in a good way!

    You absolutely did the right thing Edd. I know how tough it is to realize when it's time to stop. Your mind wants to keep going, but your body says stop. It's not worth the risk of further injury Edd. You handled it like a true professional 👏

    Chin up Edd, you put in a solid effort and you can be proud of yourself for not giving up the instant disaster struck. As so many other commentators observed, you made the right choice. It's never easy to pull out of a race, but you were right not to risk a prolonged injury.
    I also ran the marathon that day, and I totally agree with your observations about the weird camber on some of the roads. I wore the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3, and the high stack combined with that strange camber trashed my lower legs. Unlike you however, I have absolutely no problem with walking towards the end of a marathon, and decided to do so. I was over half an hour slower than my goal time, but I've given myself the confidence that I can go the distance and cope with that amount of time on feet. I am sure we'll both learn from our experience and return to the marathon distance in the not too distant future.
    On a lighter note, imagine how much worse the pothole incident might have been had you worn your beloved Prime X Strung!

    You’ll be back, stronger than ever! I ran the Great Welsh Marathon over the weekend too as my first 42.2 and it was a similar-ish story… going along relatively smoothly at 3:15 pace until the hamstrings imploded at 35km and it was all gritted teeth from there to eventually cross at 3:37. Will stick to the half-marathons for now, with a view to a second shot at the full in Amsterdam, 2024. Here’s to better days ahead for the both of us, Mr. Bud! 🤙

    • @daddyV88
      @daddyV88 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow you ran your first marathon at a 3:15 pace? What a beast! I don’t think I could run 5k at that pace

  • @RunDivision
    @RunDivision ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I tried to stick with the 3:15 pacers and expected around 7:25 ish pace and they were so fast after 4 miles I had to let them go and ended up running my own race. Didn’t go the way I had hoped the heat hit me at mile 18 and at 23.5 I had to stop due to cramp. Continued to run but could feel my other leg wanting to cramp so slowed down. Finished in 3:26 which was a 19 minute PB so can’t be sniffed at but already signed up for next year as the long term goal is a Sub3 👍

    Ahh hell! That's such a bummer. Sorry to hear about that! Sounds like you made the right call. No point in hurting yourself further. I have some experience walking in a few of my marathon attempts...when my IT band knee pain or tight hamstrings flare up to the point where running was just not an option. I walked them all in and finished eventually....but that's not a lot of fun! At least you got the race day experience under your belt...will serve you well in your next attempt :)

  • @bearsareusjsbl
    @bearsareusjsbl ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Edd - the marathon distance is everything you can control, and all to frequently tempered by situations that you can’t.
    You were wise to have stopped as difficult as it must have been to make that decision.
    You will have another day, and what you learned from this experience will make your approach more refined in the future.
    You will prevail. Of that, I have no doubt.

    • @EDDBUD
      @EDDBUD  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did learn lots here Steve. One viewer suggested I was overreaching on the pace which isn’t the case here. Weird some people have to provide such insight into others running experience based on nothing but a few clips! I appreciate as always your support right from the start. 👍🏼👊

    Quest for the Goldilocks glove was conquered when I found a pair of Merino gloves that weren't thin. If the temps are colder a thin base layer glove underneath the Merino pair is used. Have used a pair of Nike thin gloves or even a pair of sensuous silk slipped under the Merino would be mint!

    Sorry to hear this Ed. I Can’t believe I didn’t see you at the start. My Brighton Marathon didn’t go to plan. First the 3:30 pacer decided to go to the loo at the start, so I was left in no man’s land. Then at 6 miles I started to get discomfort in my hip which only got worse. My concerns about the wave rebellion pro came true…they take all the pressure of your calf’s and put them on your hips and thighs. Wheels fell off at 18 miles but continued to the finish. Great atmosphere and event. Currently my thighs are in bits, which I’ve never experienced before.

    It was great to see you and cheer you on when you ran past me around the level and it's a shame that you had to drop out. Your right the pot holes in Brighton are a nightmare, living and running in Brighton it's hard to avoid them I'm surprised that the ones on the marathon course were not sorted out before the day but you definitely did the right thing its always best to listen to your body rather than pushing it and there will always be other runs.

    I blame the council - Pot holes everywhere!! 🤬😂 Sorry to hear it didn’t work out, but well done for the first 18 miles. At least you had a nice cat for company when you did drop out! I’ve found sticking with pacers to be challenging too…different pacing strategy to your personal preference, but also it gets very busy around the pacers so difficult to keep in your stride, particularly approaching water stations. Great video and good luck for the next marathon 👍😃

Fortunately not bad enough to put me out. Went on for a PB as I was aiming at 3.15 with yourself. Always the next one to look forward to!!!

    Absolutrely the right decision Edd, I carried on after turning my ankle at London in my 1st ever marathon. 11 miles in and foolishly kept going, finished the race, got the medal and a stress fracture which kept me from running for 7 months! Bloody frustrating when you recognise you can't go on, but you will be back stronger and wiser 👍🏻👍🏻

    Sorry to hear! Plan for the next one! Omg the exact same thing happened to me with Adiós Pro 3 shoes. I ran a half marathon in them, by mile 11 they were starting to feel uncomfortable, like not enough cushion. Then I got a huge bloody blister on my right big toe on the outer part. So strange!

    I was there too on Sunday and said hello in the corral. Was a pleasure! I can see how the potholes could cause problems, came a bit too close for comfort to one myself at one point. They were not easy to spot especially when running in a crowd. Hard luck on the DNF. I’ve been there in a past marathon but my next race after that (a half) was my best ever result. Running goes like that sometimes I suppose. I really enjoyed Brighton, brilliant crowds, tough course and missed my 3hr target by a few seconds after suffering right near the end. If it’s any consolation you missed by far the worst part of the course, a totally dead stretch that goes away from the town at about km 37-39. It turned me into a wreck 😅

    Had the same experience with my first half marathon attempt, busy race, not optimal roads you don't know, and strained my calf and quit. Second half marathon I ran easy pace, just to finish the distance and third I was experienced and healthy enough for a goal pace. Sticking to 21k max at my age. Good luck with your next one!

    Hard luck, unfortunately they can't all go well, learn what you can from it and go again! Had one in particular I struggled badly at the end but gone from pb to pb since.
    For what it's worth, decide ahead of the race what shoes to wear, keep the morning as stress and decision free as you can.
    As you said, v important to keep the first couple of miles no faster than your target pace. I've found all too often pacers go off too fast. Last year was running with a couple I expected to be ahead off, about 19 miles they realized they were ahead and nearly stopped dead on the road

    Ed I get the lovely thick bin bags to wear before hand I felt it kept me just right for the run at Brighton. I must of fluked it as I got to drop my luggage off straight away. Unlucky with the dnf. I wore the adidas pro 3 amazing 🤩 I prefer them to the vapors v2. If it helps your dnf I got a 3 hour 46 second as I cramped up at the home straight to not get my first sub 3. Thank you for the content I did look out for you.

    Hi Ed I always used to cut two holes out of a bin bag, for the arms, then you have a waterproof and windproof cover before you start. Regarding pace, I think most peeps slow a little in the last 10k of a marathon, so I personally used to make allowance for this by going slightly quicker at the start, however we are all different I know, Well done on your first effort at the marathon, it was unfortunate you got injured as I think you would have been near your target time, Always difficult on your first one to know what pace to run, experience means a lot in marathon running.
