Image Transfer Gelli Plate Technique Laser to Plate

  • Explore the fascinating world of gelli plate photo transferring in this full process video. Learn what worked best in papers, paints, and tips to achieve stunning image prints. Join Patricia, the PM artist, as she guides you through this creative journey.
    To say that this is a momentous moment in my artistic life is akin to saying oh, it was nice meeting George Clooney and having dinner at the Ritz….For so long, M can vouch for this, I have tried to get a decent photo image transfer from a gel plate! GOT NOTHING! Then I happened upon a video and the woman commented, “hitting the sweet spot” about her gel plate. Viola! Light bulbs went off and suddenly all became clear. Think of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears…too hard, too soft THEN just right! That Gelli plate has to have just the right amount of moisture on the plate to ‘grab’ the photo toner and then transfer it onto the plate. Too much and the toner is in suspension, too little and it is too dry to stick. There are so many other variables that influence the outcome and the video will address most of those. If any other questions haven’t been taken into consideration, please do ask. I am happy to help because I have had lots of it along my way to where I am now.
    As always thank you for stopping by and if you have found inspiration with this project (or any of our others) please like this video, subscribe to our channel, and ring the bell so we can be on our creative journey together!

    This was my second - or third - time through! I appreciate how simple you make it. I was watching someone who had taught printing for years and I felt for her since she made it so complicated! I have misplaced my 4" round and 3x5" and really want to do small right now! I appreciate all of your tips! I so wish YT would let us see those red marks that show we have already watched again! Thanks for the video, there are many good tips in here. I’m ready to go back into the studio and try again after a day of failures. Think I’ve been leaving too much ink on the plate. Also, I’ve been working too big. Good advice to start small until I get some successes on the table.
    PS: I’ve been rolling my excess ink onto sketchbook pages for backgrounds. I have lots of backgrounds now!
    Also, like you, I can’t recall where I saw a video or who made it and I often want to return to watch it again. If you “Like” it, it stays in your library. Backup memory.

    Lollygag and Fabulosa LOL those are towards our use myself. I was actually adding retarder directly to the plate and I was getting some streaks. So of course it makes sense just to mix it in the paint before you apply it LOL. Sometimes in the middle of pulling multiple prints I’ll actually clean my jelly plate and rub it with olive oil. So you’re right about hitting the Sweet Spot. You did a great job with this video I really learned a lot.

    Interesting and a little different from other sites where paint is allowed to dry before print is pulled.

      It makes a world of difference! Golden paint makes a paint called "open" which means it has more moisture and dries less quickly on the plate. I just use regular paint with the retardant added; go easy on it and add a little bit at a time because it will stay sticky longer if you add too much. Um...that was experience talking and some prints stuck together as a result.

    Great job on this! Well done! I have tried and tried and tried. So many different kinds of paper, and paint! And photographs. And I finally gave up after pulling out all my hair. But I am seeing that the photograph makes a big difference! Can you offer any suggestions on how to get that wonderful contrast that seems to be so important. • @PMartistStudio
      @PMartistStudio  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes the contrast is super important and so is the laser print itself. Adjust the contrast on your photos giving them the most true black areas as the grays most likely will not transfer. When you print the laser prints be sure to have the settings to the highest quality so it puts down as much toner as it can. Good luck and thank you so much for watching!

      For this type of image transfer the printed copies are from an HP LaserJet printer. InkJets will not work with this type of image transfer. Note it is also a good idea to run the prints twice to build up the toner on the paper before attempting the gel print pull.

I think on you tube there are even tutorials on how to make them! They feel in hand like a stiff piece of jello.. The “gel” absorbs the ink and then depending on the layers/ textures you use will depend on the outcome of your “pull”! I would suggest if you have never done gelli printing to defiantly try it, but I must warn you, you will need lots of room for drying, and it’s very addictive! • @patriciarcarmichael1219
      @patriciarcarmichael1219 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can but it is really tricky and depending on what your subject matter is, the quality of the image and paint--well it's just easier to start with dark color and pull with a light color. It is easier to pull with the metallic rather rather than get a good transfer using it. I will be doing some of this on the live tomorrow at 10 am CST if you would like to watch.

    what printing software do you use to get dark photos

    • @PMartistStudio
      @PMartistStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sue it is sort of the software, meaning you want to alter the photos so you are getting good contrast. The other part is printing the image twice on the best quality setting on your laser printer. What that does is bumps up the ink on the printed photo which in turn gives the paint on the plate something to grab. Hopefully, this helps, and let us know if it did.
