    Great demonstration and print. Love seeing it first pass and then with your doubling printing for more pop and contrast. I am so psyched to delve right into Gelli printing photocopies with my home Brother monochrome laser printer, but I was thrown because it did not work. The toner did not adhere to the GP, and I put it through the printer 3 times. Have you ever heard of the problem being the toner (its some third party toner which is cheaper),, Someone said that they take their prints out to be printed to avoid problems, but I feel that crazy because the experience of getting it onto the plate is part of the entire viseral experience. Thank's again.

    • @Michellemixedmedia
      @Michellemixedmedia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much. I don't know about third party toners or particular laser printers being a problem. Maybe you are printing an image that has too much grey in it despite printing several times? I also use a halftone filter sometimes when editing digital images before I print. Someone shared a video of themselves trying to do a laser transfer in one of the Gel Printing FB groups as they kept failing to get a transfer. The images they printed didn't have nearly enough contrast. They also didn't make sure the print was in full contact with the gel plate. They got lots of suggestions from members. Check out the FB groups and post some images or best of all a short video of what you are doing. Good luck

    I never thought to put the paper through and print twice!!! I saw somewhere that someone actually printed their laser print on like a glossy photo paper and it seemed to work great. Have you tried that? I’m not having any luck but I think I’m rolling too much paint. Wont give up! Still trying!

    • @Michellemixedmedia
      @Michellemixedmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not tried glossy photo paper but it works well printing twice with a laser printer. Important to use an image that's very high contrast so ideally no shades of grey just black and white. Once you get the hang of it it's great fun ☺️ Tfw 🦋🌸

    • @SpectrumOfChange
      @SpectrumOfChange ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For any future print makers, I want to clarify it's NOT photo paper, it's glossy "business paper". Photo paper will ruin your gell plate by sticking, pulling up pieces of the gell plate.

    Such a fun technique. I tried this once on my last laser printer and totally failed. I will have to give it a go now that I have a new laser printer. I can't for the life of me remember how I did this, but maybe look and see if your printer has a setting in your printer dialog box to add more toner somehow. I did this with my current printer to get better foiling results and then set up a custom printer setting so I only use it for when I am foiling. Not sure if all lasers have this option, but my Canon does. It's buried pretty deep in the settings and like I said, I can't seem to find it now, but I know I did it somehow.

    What kind of paper are you using? The standard Copy Paper 80g seems not to work great because it gets wrinkly when rubbing because of moisture..

    • @Michellemixedmedia

      Sounds like you need to roll less paint on the plate as the paper should not really get wrinkly. I use a variety of papers and gsms from copier paper, deli paper etc to fine art paper. HP laser paper goes up to 120gsm if you want a thicker copier paper.

    I have tried running the prints through twice with no joy. I have a Brother laser printer. It seems that this toner doesn't work at all. I have not, after many tries, been able to get any of the image to transfer to the paint on the gelli surface.

    • @Michellemixedmedia
      @Michellemixedmedia  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's frustrating I know but unlikely to be the toner if you have double printed. It may be your image doesn't have enough contrast or that you have too much paint on the gel plate or that you leave the laser print on the plate too long etc. It's difficult to say what the issue is unless someone can see your whole process as there are many variables. I saw a video where someone uploaded a short video of their process to a gel printing group on Facebook and people could see that there were a couple of problems and could advise. You could try that or if not keep watching videos of image transfer using laser prints for more tips.

      I just bought brother HL1212W yesterday, so far I have managed to get 2 out of 20 images successfully off of paper onto plate, both of them I had sprayed with the picture varnish and let dry and the other other 8 failures are a mix of both, I think this last one I was getting there with regard to the right amount of paint on the gelli press. Keep experimenting .

    Hi , Michelle I wonder if you could help me I’m a professional photographer and want to use my own photography images on gelli plate. So I need to prints them to transfer, I’m new to gelli plate. When you say laser print what printer are you using? And what’s the best paper? When I’ve watched video people are using magazines image which transfer really well . People need to carefull with copyright.

    • @Michellemixedmedia
      @Michellemixedmedia  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Ian, I have the details of my printer in the description box. I can't recommend it as I need to double print to build up toner on the page. I just use laser copy paper for my laser prints. To pull the transfer from the gel plate you can use all kinds of papers though. Smooth papers pick up more of the transfer. Never use photo paper as the emulsion will ruin the surface of the gel plate I've heard. Image transfers can initially be a learning curve and give varying results but they are fun.

    • @Michellemixedmedia
      @Michellemixedmedia  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are a lot of things that can make a transfer fail. It took me quite a lot of frustrating attempts before I got the hang of it. Double printing my laser print is a must for mine to transfer well.

  • @RobertClark-o4x
    @RobertClark-o4x 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hi - I have tried unsuccessfully many time to transfer an inkjet image to gelli plate. I printed it in B&W after making a halftone of the picture. Contrast is good. Black acrylic is wet and thin on the plate after rolling it with the brayer, then I lay down the laserjet image - lightly toughing it for 3 to 5 seconds and then life. It comes off easily - not sticky the way in your video. And ALL of the ink comes off the plate onto the paper. If anything, there might be one small part of the image on the plate somewhere and it is way to light to be meaningful. I dont know how to be lighter with touch or faster with laydown to prevent so much of the acrylic from coming off the plate. Do you know what I need to do? I am out of ideas and frustrated!

    • @Michellemixedmedia
      @Michellemixedmedia  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You mention using inkjet images. You need to be sure you are using a laser print. They are very different. An inkjet print will not work using this process. This process is a resist process. The toner in laser prints resists the water based acrylic paint on the gel plate so when a print is placed on the plate, anywhere where there is a high amount of toner will repel the acrylic paint and leave it behind on the plate while parts of the page without toner will pick up the paint and leave the darkest parts of the image on your gel plate.

    • @RobertClark-o4x
      @RobertClark-o4x 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Michellemixedmedia thanks. I meant to say laser jet. I threw away my inkjet for a new laser jet to try to make this work.

    • @Michellemixedmedia
      @Michellemixedmedia  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If all the paint is lifted off the plate when you try to transfer the image to the plate then it sounds like there is not enough toner on your print to repel the acrylic paint. Maybe print something which only has black and white at first to try and troubleshoot this. I double print images.

    • @Michellemixedmedia
      @Michellemixedmedia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use regular copier paper and the prints can be transferred weeks after printing. The key thing is high contrast prints and printing the image twice it seems. Printing once didn't work for me probably due to modern laser printers not using as much toner as the older ones.
